At this point I feel like BKC is challenging himself to find more and more ultra-specific topics about old metas he can talk about for an hour. I'm absolutely here for it.
Those stats are just so nice. But it's kind of a bummer that Azelf, despite looking great on paper, seems to always fall short on everything outside the consistent, suicide lead slot.
It just doesn't have the typing or bulk to be an effective special attacker and doesn't have the movepool to be a physical attacker. Stab psychic moves are not a thing that gets used very often in dpp for a good reason.
From my many hours and placements on ladder over the years my deduction is to be a good sweeper you either need good duel stabs or priority. Azelf has neither and invites the most common mon in the game, tyranitar. Aswell as heatran and even jirachi
The main thing I found in my (relatively little) experience with DPP is that you can build azelf to be good vs a lot of options but being purely offensive means you'll always have these really good universal checks you have to beat *and* it doesn't make nearly as much progress as lead azelf does across a game
Mono psychic with no focus blast in ttars and playground is no bueno, plot is cute but if your goal is to get a kill and die to pursuit might as well use zam and actually threaten back
It doesn't help that its offensive moveset is somewhat lackluster outside of STAB, which is unreliable in a meta with ttar. Its support movepool is amazing however.
DPP Azelf is a lot like RBY Jynx, really cool, but its defensive deficiencies means they only fit into the lead slot. In the lead slot, though, they are nearly guaranteed to get the most vital elements of their respective gens, sleep (and freeze!) for Jynx, and setting hazards (and occasionally screens) for Azelf, so they are nearly perfect leads.
This video is good for listening when going to sleep. Not that your video is boring, but its all just talk to me and its super long so its soothing. Good video
I do remember CB Azelf’s emergence, it was around the time Latias got banned (2010-2011?) and I think it was Aeroblacktyl/MoP who was the pioneer behind the set, correct me if I’m wrong. Machamp was at an all time high as lead back then as you said, with Lum Metagross being its only real adversary as well as Specs Heatran (sash Champ hadn’t taken off back then, only Lum) and so came CB Azelf to pop it off with Zen HB, and take out all the others with an insanely powerful explosion. Hippo was the standard stall lead back then too, and taking that out with CB Azelf, was always fun as it was still new and they didn’t expect that 💥
I have never even touched a singles metagame but its just so nice seeing him rant off into the distante about thoose very specific topics Im really exited everytime i see a new video in the feed
This is great timing. Ive really been trying to get better at DPP lately. Very strange but interesting meta forsure. Thanks for the epic *content* Kevin!
I liked to use Azelf over Deoxys-S in BW2 Ubers, because of Explosion. It really got the job done. I can't remeber its nature, but it was full atk and had a lot of speed, and used Stealth Rock, Taunt, Explosion, and Magic Coat; that last move was amazing when I predicted right.
I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet as it isn’t the weekend, but have you tried Imprison on it BKC? Imprison can stop moves like u-turn and explosion in addition to the normal rocks.
Yo BKC I've been meaning to contact you on Discord but couldn't find you on my friends list for some reason, and the discord invite is expired, can I get a new invite?
Even though I kind of dislike Stealth Rock, I think gen 4 still had my second favorite meta after 3. The lead metagame and the better offensive options without it being insane like gen 5 and onwards were really cool
Never had an issue with Azelf, I opted for anti rocks lead Weavile. Fake out, Night Slas orb gets it done. Nobody ever uses weavile lead in gen 4 but its so strong. Fake out ice punch for Aerodactyl. its the best anti lead in the game. Low kick or brick break for screens too
Azelf @ Custap Berry Ability: Levitate EVs: 96 Def / 156 SpA / 40 SpD / 216 Spe Timid Nature - Stealth Rock - Taunt - Fire Blast - Explosion y not this set evs to survive gross mash and empoleon pump to activate custap
they'll still finish you off with priority, and even if you switch out, it's gonna be tough to come back in and make use of that custap since azelf is so naturally fast
anyone killing a whole pokemon just to get sr on the first turn, with out even knowing if the oponent has a spinner is an idiot, even if you do know he cant remove the sr, you can easily have sr without losing a whole pokemon to it
10/10 lead. This message will now self destruct.

Physical Psychic is not easy to spam 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah, Psychics in general have it rough in the later gens. In DPP OU, Tar is everywhere, so using a Psychic would open weaknesses to your team.

Always surprsing to me that azelf finds so little usage beyond a dedicated lead with those attacking stats. Great video idea though

Weavile is faster than Azelf so Night slash kills it before it can even rocks. so you are 6 - 5 and no risk of rocks all game

Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, Earthquake and Explosion Focus Sash lead Lando-T is still used today effectively so no it doesn’t make you an idiot
If you can pilot your Hyper Offense effectively, your opponent removing rocks will cost him a lot of momentum against your huge offensive threats
