- Neurodivergent people have profound strengths. However, they are much more likely to be unemployed. In his passionate talk, data leader and proud advocate for neurodiversity inclusion Andrew Pfeiffer shows the TEDxCanberra audience the positive impacts of being part of a truly inclusive workplace. Andrew is an enthusiastic data leader and a proud advocate for neurodiversity inclusion. In 2019, Andrew unexpectedly discovered that he is autistic. This revelation transformed Andrew's life by profoundly increasing his self-awareness of his strengths and areas of development.
Andrew passionately advocates for the inclusion of neurodivergent staff in the workplace. He cultivates employee resource groups and regularly delivers presentations about neurodiversity to various audiences, including senior executives. He wants everyone to know that organisations will have a competitive advantage if they harness neurodivergent talent through inclusive recruitment practices and workplace culture. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I'm neurodiverse myself, but in a way most people haven't heard of. I have Saccadic Dysfunction - which causes me to mix up between lines easily. Therapy yielded many improvements, but there are still jobs I can't do well. Like bookkeeping and finance. Ironically, the place that let me go because I didn't do well in finance has hired me back in a different role. You never know!
Go Andy! I'm proud to say I went to uni with this guy - he is extremely intelligent and the one of the kindest people you'll meet
I can’t thank you enough for sharing your story, Andrew. Neurodivergence is all around us, but our society can be so hostile when it could so easily foster more than just neurotypical brains. The benefits to be reaped are incredible. I really hope organisations are heeding your advice.
Inspiring and thought provoking - and that's a great suit!
Interviews are an interesting one. They shouldnt be a test. The point of them is really to get to know the person. Their work history and qualifications tell them if you can do the job, the interview should be to see if you are a good fit for the team personality wise.
I love your suit! Mesmerising… I used to work for a company that was 90% neurodivergent (including myself). I have never understood the CEO’s (also neurodivergent) decision to hav an open plan workspace. So many stressed employees. It might have been a deliberate power move. He had a much prized office all to himself. Who knows. Great talk!
Well done Andrew. Fantastic message and presentation.
