  • People on the Autism spectrum are an example of people denied full participation in our society because they do not "fit in" in one way of another. Organizational leaders can be part of the solution by embracing a puzzle-building model of leadership to benefit both the organizations that they lead as well as those struggling to fit in. You won't want to miss Tom Edwards' inspiring and practical talk, where he explores the true meaning of effective and inclusive leadership. Tom Edwards is an alumnus of Villanova University and a current professor and department chair at Temple University for their engineering, technology, and management program. Tom pursues organizational innovation from the three perspectives of research, practical application, and teaching. He is an engineer, a former industry executive, a college professor, and an "Autism Dad". Tom began to apply management principles to the leadership of employees on the autism spectrum in 2015 when he developed a workshop for industry practitioners looking to build a body of practical knowledge to overcome the complete lack of research on this topic. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Now for the next level question.
Since I can find no data, how would an Autistic person learn to be a good leader?
    Better communicator?

Very subjective answer : I'm just thinking about Greta Thunberg right now, but I'm not sure if she's a leader or more an inspirator/a guide. How did she make it? Maybe we could find some clues there.
Otherwise, for example an autistic person could be a good leader by pointing precisely the do and don't to that provide efficiency in quite any system, in order to pursue a goal. Communication can be straight to the point with an autistic person so no loss of time, the only thing is to make sure that words and voice carry enough empathy and conviction, so that the form of the speech is well received and not seen as too rude. By the way autistic people are generally very empathetic and sensitive to the well being, which is is so important when you want to lead a team or people. They can take the lead and meanwhile still very attentive to each one's challenges : they don't forget where they come from, they're generally very attached to equality in terms of respecting and valuing everyone.

I'm a bit disappointed that this wasn't a talk on how neurodivergent people could be good leaders, but perhaps my autistic brain misunderstood!

Thank you for the feedback. I have heard this from several people. It is difficult (impossible?) for me to address the development of neurodivergent leaders (since I am neurotypical). However, I have meet a few neurodivergent leaders who responded to this TEDx and introduced them to each other to form a group to address this very question. Stay tuned.

I think we were so waiting for this and the title sounds like "hey here is the answer!". :) Finally we might find some inspiration throughout reknown autistic "leaders"... but they might essentially be inventors and not team leaders as we could figure it out.
