A lot of the dialogue seems unimportant but it's actually telling you the how and why of things. After the Sollozzo meeting, Vito gets mad at Sonny for letting Sollozzo know that Sonny liked the drug deal. Since Sonny was second in command, this told Sollozzo that if he had Vito killed then he could make the deal with Sonny. That's why they try to kill Vito. In Michael's story, when he goes to Sicily we see that his bodyguard, Fabrizzio, is desperate to go to America. Later Michael uses Fabrizzio as a translator to talk to Apollonia's father. This gives Fabrizzio valuable information about Michael that he can trade for a chance to go to America. That's why he plants a car bomb later. This kind of thing is going on throughout the movie, it's easy to miss the connections the first time you watch the movie.
Thank you for the insightful comment! You're absolutely right. Sonny's reaction during the Sollozzo meeting was critical-by showing interest in the drug deal, he unintentionally revealed a potential weakness, implying that Sollozzo could make a deal if Vito were out of the way. This is why Sollozzo targeted Vito. As for Fabrizzio, his desperation to go to America plays a key role in his betrayal. Using the information he gained while acting as Michael’s translator, he saw an opportunity to trade that knowledge for his own future, leading to the car bomb. These small details really do connect the deeper layers of the film!
