  • The TRAGIC Life of Tom Hagen | The HIDDEN Secret Behind Tom Hagen…
The notorious don Vito Corleone was revered for his cunning intelligence and unique skills and even talents in navigating and later on building an empire worth billions. However, one of Vito’s most important skills, and probably his key to success, was his ability to surround himself with reliable people. As we see in the films, Vito always surrounds himself with people he can definitely rely on. As the Corleone family grew, and its power and influence was exponentially expanding, Vito had to start relying on the younger generation, so that they can continue to thrive, which is why he began to give more and more responsibility to his sons. And one of the most important of these individuals, who would be instrumental in maintaining the vast power of the Corleone family empire, was his young consiglieri, Tom Hagen. After the passing of Vito’s close childhood friend and former shrewd Consiglieri, Genco Abandando, in a move that was seen as controversial and even foolish, Vito named Tom Hagen as his new consiglieri. Even though the films didn’t focus primarily on him,Tom was still an integral part of the Corleone family and played a key role in its success.
So in this video We will finally analyse and uncover everything you want to know about the legendary consiglieri, Tom Hagen. Tom Hagen, is probably known as the most underrated character in the entire trilogy, and so if you watch this video you will definitely understand how and why he is such a critical character in the films. What’s even more we will finally answer the numerous questions we have about the character and his story….In one of the initial scripts of the Godfather 3, Michael Corleone and Tom Hagen would go up against each other. Which begs the question, if Tom was to go up against Michael, who would win?
    Lets find out..
One of the most important individuals, who would be instrumental in maintaining the vast power of the Corleone family empire, was the legendary consiglieri, Tom Hagen. He was made consiglieri to the most powerful mafia boss in the entire country. which obviously was Don Vito Corleone. After the passing of Vito’s close childhood friend and former shrewd Consiglieri, Genco Abandando, in a move that was seen as controversial and even foolish, Vito named Tom Hagen as his new consiglieri. Even though the films didn’t focus primarily on him,Tom was still an integral part of the Corleone family and played a key role in its success. he helped the empire grow to be worth billions, and held the secrets of the Corleone family as he was the dons right hand man, and was entrusted with almost everything. After the attempt on Michael's life at the compound, Michael appointed Tom as acting Don. Which came out quite a surprise to Tom , as this was a sign of deep trust. And so, Tom finally understood why Michael was distancing him from certain aspects of the family business. Michael explained that he had to exclude Tom from these aspects, so that he can with full certainty trust him at that point. This is because of the fact that since Tom didn't know certain things, he wouldn’t be targeted or pressured to betray Michael especially since how high up tom was, he would be the person Michaels enemies would target to get to him. But with Tom not having any no motive or information to make moves against him. Michael knew he could count on at least one person.
Hagen was instrumental in both securing the friendship of powerful Senator Patrick Geary and defending Michael as his lawyer during the Senate hearings on the Mafia.
After Michael had taken care of all his enemies once again, there was still one last thread he needed taken care of by Tom. And so He was instructed by Michael to convince the almost traitor and former Capo regime Frank Pentangeli to, lets just say permanently stay silent once and for all, to protect Michael and the Family from his testimony forever. With Pentangeli and other enemies dead, the Corleone family as it regained its position as the most powerful crime family in the nation and now on its way into fulfilling Michaels long time vision.

Blood definitely makes family, but not always.
Tom’s character reminds me of the five good emperor’s of Rome. They were considered among the best leaders in Rome’s history and they shared the common background of being the adopted son of the previous emperor. Rome reached its zenith under them. The glory days ended when Marcus Aurelius’ biological son, Commodus, took the throne.
I guess there’s just something about someone taking you in and truly raising you as their own that makes the bond of loyalty that much stronger. And when responsibility falls to them they truly feel duty bound to do their best.

I always felt that Tom Hagen was sorely underrated as a character. He was an integral part of the Corleone family, a very intelligent and cunning individual who was just as ruthless as some of the tougher guys we see throughout the series. I would go so far as to say that his only true weakness was that because he was adopted, he yearned for his family's acceptance. This was something that Michael was easily able to exploit, as we get the sense that he didn't really even trust Tom despite what he says to him in Part II. He says himself, "I always wanted to be thought of as a brother by you Mikey, a real brother." In short, Tom was easily one of the smartest and most capable among them but had something of an inferiority complex that the others would use against him when necessary. I never felt like he got the respect he deserved

Absolutely loved this video! I've always wondered on why Tom didn't act in Godfather III and this video gave a lot of answers. As the author of this video says, nobody except Duvall could have played Tom Hagen so well. In fact, I can't find a single character in the first 2 movies who didn't play their part to perfection. This is one of the reasons the Godfather (1,2) are hailed as the best movie in a century. I am a great fan of the movie and would watch any documentary related to the film (like this one). The way the characters were connected to each other is absolutely brilliant and kudos to Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola! The way story telling has been made in these movies is a lesson for any upcoming director!

This isn't exactly related to the video but, considering the trilogy as a whole, the story of the Corleone's is about strategy over strength. They had been almost entirely wiped at one point, to being one of the wealthiest and most respected families in the country that were "almost" 100% legitimate. Of course, with no other options Vincent Mancini took over as don. I wish they would make a 4th film while Andy Garcia is alive so we could see what state the Corleone family would be in almost 40 years later.

A Part IV with Vincent as the Don and Connie as his consigliere would be very interesting. If we follow the timeline, the antagonisT wouldn’t necessarily be another mobster, but a DA like Rudy Giuliani.

As always excellent work - I’m not sure you acknowledge that Tom was so thorough and excelled to the degree Michael was a bit jealous of his relationship with Vito. That plays into Tom being removed because, “they say it’s just business it’s not personal, it’s personal.” Also, “you’re taking things personal this is business!” - “ain’t I a person?” Gyp Rossetti 😂

The genius of Hagen was that he stood just outside the family, was more of a dispassionate observer than a hot blooded member. He was also a chameleon and could survive and fit in with different worlds. He was the one sent to deal with studio heads, Denators and other gangsters. Extremely valuable, the family should have taken his advice and gone in with Salozzo, made a ton of money and avoided bloodshed. He had it right.

Michael had been to war and had real strategic training as an officer in the Pacific theatre. He shows this in how he takes out ALL of his enemies in one move at the end of the first movie, something none of the other Don's would have ever considered or been able to devise and control.
Tom weighed every word, gesture, look and thought things through twice before opening his mouth to speak. Sonny could come up with things on the fly but not like Michael would or with the depth of understanding of the long term repercussions that Tom would see. There are some targets you walk away from because while it looks like it would be a good win right now, the knock on effects would kill you later.

Honestly, I watched the Godfather 1 and the Godfather 11 many times. The Godfather 111 on the other hand though I’m glad I saw the movie. I only saw it once and that was enough. I was thought Tom Hagan was one of the most important characters in the films, and was surprised when he wasn’t in the third film. I also believe that he was the perfect Consigliere to Michael. Let’s face it they were just like each other, and a perfect complement to each other. The weaknesses Tom had as a war time Consigliere Michael, more than meet up for, and where Michael lacked in the law, Tom more than made up for. This is what made them both as a team such a powerful force to be reckoned with.

  • @BadgerBJJ
    @BadgerBJJ 8 місяців тому +4

I think your take was wrong. The reason Michael pushed out Tom was because it was possible that Tom would be the one to betray Michael. He was keeping Clamenza, Tessio and Tom all at arms length while he built a secret regime. To Tom’s credit, he was able to see through Michael’s plans just like the Don knew he would. There was also a secondary reason. Michael wanted to transition the family into legitimate businesses, and needed a lawyers not Consigliere.

One of the 2 biggest flaws in the Godfather 3 is the absence of Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), the other being the presence of Sophia Copolla. The story would have been different if Tom was there, so I've read, but even as it was written, Tom would have been a much better character than the one played by George Hamilton.

Remember, Tom was also still under pressure from the Turk to “make the deal with Sonny” so I’m pretty sure that any talk that conflicted with that wasn’t well received. That’s part of the beauty of this film. Duval’s performance in this scene is so incredibly nuanced. Knowing what we know and also knowing what Tom is probably thinking as a result. I’ve watched that scene over 100 times and will always spot something new. This is always considered to be Michael’s big scene - where he finally starts to come out of his innocent college boy persona and morph into a real gangster. All in one scene. Meanwhile, keep your eyes on Tom. Notice HIS transformation too. By the end of that scene, he goes from hiding his reservations about going after the Turk from the rest of the family to ultimately coming around at the end. Confident that little Mikey might be right after all.
Michael: “We have newspaper men on the payroll, right Tom? They might like a story like that.”
Tom: “They might. They just might.”
    Brilliant.

Thoughts on a "What if" video.
What if Connie Corleone had married Rocky Balboa ???
You can even make the argument to make it fit inside the Godfather universe that the reason Rocky "ramdonly" got picked by Apollo Creed to fight against him for the belt was because Don Vito asked for a couple of favours to make sure his new son-in-law have opportunities to support her daughter Connie.

I think that was partially due to Vito treating him better than his own son's at times. Like he treated him much better than Fredo and sometimes looked more favorably upon him than Sonny (in regards to achievements). I can understand the frustration that might have caused her. He thought better of a child that came from another woman than some of his own that came from her. So she just passed on the resentment to Tom. Even though he wasn't responsible for it.

@@TheChattounet it’s ok if you haven’t read the book. In the scene where Kay visits and gets tactfully dismissed, we only see Tom’s reaction. In that same scene in the book, when Tom takes Kay into the house to call a taxi, Mama Corleone arrives soon after and has a talk with Kay about Michael. As Tom tries to tell her to keep quiet, she snaps at him in only a way that the woman who raised him could. More than that, no direct reference to how she feels about Tom is mentioned. It certainly isn’t in the negative.
