Why is Dracovish messed up? What is Dracovish? What Arctozolt? Why is Arctozolt messed up? What is Dracozolt? Why is Dracozolt messed up? Why is Arctovish messed up? and what is Arctovish? These are the questions of the day! Why are the gen 8 fossil Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield broken and put together?
What does this have to do with Galar? What does it have to do with real paleontology? and what even are the bone wars? Let's have some fun.

Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out!
Gen 8's fossil Pokemon all have this look to them that screams "kill me now". I honesty feel bad for reviving them.

They're in so much pain
Honestly the fans treat these fossil better cause ive seen art of seemless NOT mismatched acro and dracozolt and they are adorable
Cara Liss is a monster.
Every other scientist, in every other region, has been able to revive ancient Pokemon using only a fragment of said Pokemon for decades.
She purposely wanted to experiment on Pokemon, no matter how much that Pokemon suffered because of it.
And the player is partially responsible for crimes against Pokemon.
And I find it odd that the Pokedex entries for these creations, throw random hypotheses of why they died out and never questioned their source or how these Pokemon came into being in the first place.
There seems to be corruption in the Galar scientific community that the government is overlooking.
She got preoccupied with whether or not she could, she never stopped to think if she should.
Maybe they are funded by Chairman Rose who pushes them to deliever

Evolution is often a random genetic change that benefites, right?
@@wastelandlegocheem A lot of people get confused about this part. Evolution is entirely random mutation, and the species that just happen to mutate traits that happen to be beneficial in their environment live on and pass on their genes; natural selection. It's more 'survival of the adaptable' than 'survival of the fittest'. Our ancestor species just happened to have mutated many traits that are exceptionally useful for adaptation and survival, and so we have a bit of survivorship bias when looking back. But the bland reality is that we simply won the genetic lottery in terms of random mutations, and from there we began to thrive. And species don't necessarily go extinct when they breed a new species, like how your father and grandfather will still be around when you're born, which is the reason we have so many different animals of the same type: birds, fish, apes (including ourselves), cats, dogs, etc.
@@Syncopiia actually evolution isn't random at all,all evolution has a reason that helps them survive in there habitat like fish evolved gill to help them breathe underwater and plant evolved to need less water in the desert
I like to think that the scientist Cara liss was once a respected Pokémon palaeontologist that lost her title. Compared to other region and possibly future region fossils, they did not know how to properly restore Galar fossils properly. Not enough DNA in the fossils, didn’t want them to be part rock or the entire practice to revive fossils in the first place had not been done. So Cara Liss had the idea to fuse the Pokémon fossils together to bring them back. This lead to the Galar fossils, originally she was proudest others were not. They removed her status and she was no longer a regarded scientist. Failure to see what she did wrong and claims to be the smartest palaeontologist, she still uses this process for trainers that bring them the right fossils
"When the pokemon woke up, his head was backwards, and the professor was never heard from again! Anyway, that's how I lost my palaeontology license."
TL;DW The Galor Fossil Pokemon exist to roast early Paleontology, and the Jurassic Park series.
In all seriousness though, I'd love to see Pokemon based on uniting the correct fossils, and/or the current fossil mon evolving to better fit together so they at least look a lot less miserable.
Nicole Rafferty it would be cool to see a Pokémon game set in prehistoric times. With all the fossil Pokémon and only new prehistoric Pokémon. with an opportunity to obtain a Pokémon from the future somehow. I think the concept could be something fresh for the series

Paleo nerd here to judge everything you say! Begin Sin Counter:
1. William Buckland technically discovered the first _dinosaur_ fossil. Fossils had been around long before that. Look up Mary Anning. In fact, giant ground sloths - a group of South and, later, North American sloths that thought they were elephants - were immensely popular in British museums before the good ol' dinosaurs came along.
2. Sauropod is the group, not the species. There were all kinds of sauropods - macronians, rebbeciosaurians, titanosaurs, diplodocids - each with many species within them. Brontosaurus was a type of Late Jurassic diplodocid - a sauropod, yes, but not THE sauropod.
3. It was not a Brachiosaurus skull, it was a Camarasaurus skull. Marsh found it near the body of the Apatosaurus and assumed they went together.
4. Small sin. Elasmosaurus is a plesiosaur, not a dinosaur.
5. The Triceratops/Torosaurus thing is pretty hotly contested, but generally agreed to be false. No baby Torosaurus have been found (yet, I've heard rumors that that's not true), but the animals lived in different areas. It seems unlikely to suggest that two animals that lived in different places were the same because you haven't found babies of one of them.
6. The Crystal Palace dinosaurs were erected in 1852, before much paleontological work had been done in North America. The - strictly American - bone wars began in 1877. Your dates are wrong. The Crystal Palace dinosaurs were not based on Cope and Marsh's work.
7. Again, abelisaurs are a group of dinosaurs - of which Carnotaurus is a member. You're probably thinking of Abelisaurus.
8. That's ma-JUNG-o-saurus, ROO-gops, and jig-a-NO-to-saurus. It's not actually ji-GAN-to-saurus. The English translation is Giant Southern Reptile.
9. Umm...are you thinking of the pachycephalosaurids? Dracorex is a dinosaur (or possibly a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus), but I know of no family of dinosaurs called Draconus.
10. The meteor theory is 100% confirmed. Volcanoes helped, but they weren't the catalyst. Also, just a small nitpick, dinosaurs never went extinct. Birds are still here.
11. SERIOUSLY?! HOW CAN A TWENTY-FOOT FISH WITH AN ARMORED SKULL AND TEETH FORMED FROM BONY PLATES POSSIBLY BORE YOU?!?! IT MAKES JAWS LOOK LIKE A LITTLE KITTEN!! I mean, not a sin, more of an opinion, but still...
12. DracoREX is not a maniraptor. It's an herbivorous pachycephalosaurid. Maniraptors are theropods. Also, you still seem to be somehow mixing up Dracorex the species and Pachycephalosaurid the family.
Total sin counter: 12. Please don't hate me for this.
Thank you. That Sauropod thing annoyed me more than it should have.
Wow
I really don't think dracorex was the inspiration for Draco-.

I also notice that the chimeras have a lower BST (505) than Tyrantrum’s and Aurorus’s 521. That could be significant, because those two are found in Kalos, which is based on France, and might be geographically close to Galar if the geography is similar to the real world. As such, there might be a lore reason for this: the inherent unnaturalness of the chimeras is reducing their strength, and the “true” versions have a base 521 stat distribution.
How would that mesh with Rampardos and Bastiodon, though? They're both Fossil Pokemon from Sinnoh with dinosaur designs, but both of those have a BST of 495. There's also Aerodactyl, a Fossil Pokemon from Kanto, which has a BST of 515.

Fun fact, the human sized Velociraptors from Jurassic Park are actually Utahraptors (found in the state of Utah if you haven't guessed), which were, in actuality, roughly human sized. In fact, they even mentioned in the archaeological dig scene that the raptor they had found was IN UTAH. However, they chose to incorrectly call the Velociraptors because it sounded cooler.
No they were definitely velociraptors. They just are closer to the size of utahraptors. Henry Wu said himself that they should have been small and feathered but Hammond wanted them to be bigger, scarier, more teeth.
So they were inaccurate velociraptors but are closer to utahraptors in size
They are based on Deinonychus, actually. Utahraptor was as tall as a horse.
It was actually mentioned in the novel and by the author that they were Dienonychus (aka Velociraptor Antirhopus, at the time) and that he chose to call them Velociraptor because it sounded cooler. Speilberg followed the same idea in the movie.
To be fair, calling it a velociraptor is cooler than a Utahraptor.
They are Utah sized Velociraptors.

Please do not throw rocks at this good boy for pronunciations, classification mixups, and keep critiques on the hottly contested things civil. Literally new information comes out about this stuff monthly, so I do not blame him for being up to date on all the journals. Just remember we learn more about more about these ancient creatures (pokemon or dinosaurs? You decide!) all the time, and in another hundred years we will continue to look back and think "wow that was a wack theory, at least they were trying their best". That or just "wow, idiots" but I'm hopeful someone future scientist will take pitty.

take the fossils to someone who knows what they are doing, like the OTHER REGION'S fossil researchers who don't need a whole skeleton to revive the whole pokemon.
Give those things to roark or byron they know what their doing they even have fossils as their main pokemon.
Actually this regions professor evidently has a better Resurrection machine since they don't have the rock type so that means they don't retain the fossil aspect of them meaning that they're basically perfectly resurrected and the only thing bad about them is how their bodies are put together

lockstin you are not looking at the big part of these pokemon. why is it that you need half of a skeleton to revive the half, so you need another half to make them alive. but the other fossil pokemon you only need one bone, one shell, or one feather (aka archen) to revive the whole pokemon. and then you have aerodactyl who doesn't have any body parts, but blood. whats wrong the pokemon, or the "Jurassic park" science.
I mean. The one that revives the fossils is called Cara Liss. She probably needs all of them to make anything
Cara Liss is a hack scientist. Why do you think she's not in a laboratory and is dressed like a bum (mis-matching shoes)?
Maybe you don't actually need both and Cara Liss just wants to make these things because she's a mad scientist.
that's a very interesting idea, just makes me think how far this concept can go but you have to agree that the aka "magic" science could just fuse them in a way that makes them look a little more natural than a clean cut frakenstein
Grayvior's Void That’s not how it works. Every single cell in your body holds the DNA blueprint for your entire body. If you have right equipment and the required knowledge, you could theoretically reconstruct an entire creature from a single drop of its blood preserved inside of a mosquito trapped in amber. However, non-amber fossils are just rocks, so every fossil Pokémon except for Aerodactyl couldn’t have been revived since there was nothing left of their actual bodies. So Jurassic Park is theoretically possible, but most fossil Pokemon technically aren’t. But hey, I don’t definitely play Pokémon for the realism of its mechanics; I play it because it’s fun.

My comp professor back in college used to work special effects on the film and one of his favorite stories was always working on that damn T-rex. Apparently the original model they filmed with the toes were bright purple and NO ONE on the set wanted to fix it! Even during shooting it was always "Don't worry, we'll fix it in post" (A note for any aspiring film makers: *NEVER* utter this phrase out loud unless you want to be murdered by your post production) He actually had to go in and fix the toes in post. Quite literally re-shooting several shots with the correct dino feet just so he could have a decent looking composite (and I mean a composite in the 1990's definition of the term, not the modern process), and we're talking post-production technology and compositing way back in 1993 so I can only imagine how much of a pain that was to comp just to change the toe color.

@bryan diaz varela … No thanks … I rather not looks like something shou tucker and hp lovecraft made
Now here is where you are WRONG! Arcto is not a walrus, it is a PLESIOSSAURUS, it is called PLESIO in spanish and that's why it is called a DINO in English. The body is small but i'm sure it would have a long neck. Even some fan arts show how it could be and it fits perfectly.
This is an example of how it could actually look like:
i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/656/380/6ab.jpg
He even mentioned the whole ELASMOSAURUS with the head in the wrong place and called the plesiosaurus fossil a walrus. I think he was a little too influenced by fanart of people portraying it as a walrus instead of trying to look at this extra stuff.
@@lighteriumart Personally, I think it has less to do with fanart and more to with Lockstin's bad habit of inconsistent thought process. In this case, he thought to check the names of the Pokemon themselves in different languages, but not the names of the items that made them. And this is far from the first time he's been inconsistent in some way. He really needs to work on that.
@Super Top Secret Area In japanese is also called the Fossilized Plesiosaur, so the spanish translation is accurate.
I'd like to add to this hypothesis by adding that the other candidates have the wrong type of tail fluke. Walrus's are horizontal, and both Ichtosaurs and Mosasaurs have a strong downward bend near the end of the tail to form the bottom half of a vertical tail fluke. Plesiosaurs are suspected to have a broader variety, which would make them the strongest candidate.
I wish you would've covered one of my biggest questions about these: Why the hell do the dex entries talk about them as if they really lived?
Because Cara Liss probably made a bunch of stuff up.
Because Pokedex entries are written by a 10-year old "Pokemon Master".
@@catnip333 like dracovish's description saying that it could run really fast but at the same time needs water to breathe. it shouldn't be possible

According to the sword pokedex Dracovish is just insanely powerful, it says he hunted all his prey until he went extinct
Imagine being like an archeologist in like the year 4000, seeing an alligator skull then putting it on a cheetah skeleton and being like “that look cool”
Mewtwo had every right to be mad at biological engineering then.
I mean god knows I love the fossil pokemon and the concept behind them in this generation, but there's NO denying that every single one of them is an act against god, and asking Cara Liss to make one for you is basically making yourself an accomplice in some VERY SERIOUS ETHICAL CRIMES
if nothing else, I hope Pokemon Gun eventually lets us recreate the ACTUAL versions of these fossils later on, maybe even giving us the back halves of fossils to mix-and-match with will give us a bunch more combinations of Moral Sins. Well, the Jurassic Park Velociraptors were more based on the larger Deinonychus, but Michael Crichton used the Velociraptor name because he thought it felt "more dramatic". The book version of Dilophosaurus was more accurate, bigger and no frill (though it still spit poison), it was made smaller in the movie so it wouldn't steal the thunder of the raptors.

As a total paleontology nerd myself I was so excited to see this video.
These are the embodiment of “Just because there’s an idea behind it, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea”
Imo this is a great idea. They look rediculous and messed up, but it adds a charm to them. The history behind the designs is also interesting so I approve Gen 8's fossil pokemon.
@@DemonOfShadows66 but they are so sad tho, I want their REAL bodies to exist
@@whatTFisThis That's part of the morally gray area of reviving these pokemon this way. In the next game we'll probably have the bottom half of Zolt and Vish and the top half of Arcto and Draco. We might even be able to create more monstrosities and remake the real original versions too.
The Utah Raptor was pretty big, about the size of the velociraptors portrayed in Jurassic Park.
You know what I like about these fossil Pokemon? They're not half rock this time around.
Thank god for that.
If we get the halfs' true forms in a future game, you bet they would be part Rock.
Instead, they're half each other
Dude same that pissed me off that the fossil pokemon were ALWAYS rock type
They all look to be in pain
- if they ever introduce the extra pieces - I hope there's a way to "evolve" them into their proper forms.
Ok for the most part it's a solid video but there are MAJOR errors I have to address, coming from a Paleontological background.
Firstly: The Bone Wars happened AFTER the Crystal Palace construction. The CP was based on the earliest reconstructions of dinosaurs, hence the much more lizard-like reconstructions of Iguanodon and Megalosaurus. By the time the Bone Wars happens dinosaurs were already starting to be reconstructed more like the upright walking, tail dragging forms that were made popular in Harryhausen films, so the reason the CP reconstructions were bad were because they were from the earliest days of paleontology, NOT the result of the Bone Wars.
Secondly some of your justifications for the original forms aren't good. I still think the stegosaur interpretation is correct due to the large size, prominent backward pointing ischium and pubis (the "spike" coming out under the tail, which is smaller in pachycephalosaurs proportionally), and obviously the plates, which actually are more triangular in most stegosaur species. The whole "dracorex" interpretation is confusing since "Zolt" is clearly NOT from any known ceolorosaurian dinosaur name, and "Vish" just references the fact it's a fish and doesn't come from any part of the name "Dunkelosteus". Also no dinosaurs had elephantine feet, that is an outdated reconstruction. Even stegosaurus feet are closer to how they're presented in "Draco-". If anything the names reflect the types more than what they were from. "-vish" clearly comes from fish, which it was, but is also because fish are purely aquatic animals. "Arcto-" Reflects the ice type because of the Arctic. "-zolt" reflects the electric type, as in a jolt of electricity. And "Draco-" comes from the fact it's a dragon type. Quick side note, the Japanese often refer to dinosaurs as dragons, there's even a submarine in the Japan naval fleet called Kenryū , which means "Sword Dragon" and is nicknamed "Stegosaurus". As for the Arcto half... you completely forgot 2 major and famous types of marine reptiles that fit that body shape perfectly: the pliosaurs and plesiosaurs. Not only were pleiosaurs among the earliest described marine reptiles and portrayed alongside icthyosaurs in the earliest paleo art, we also know they had a small fluke on their short tails and would have used their long flippers for propulsion. Now I don't know if it's a pliosaur or plesiosaur as all the major differences are in the front half, but the more rounded shape of the flippers is a bit closer to plesiosaurs, compared to the much thinner and pointed flippers of pliosaurs. The walrus depiction doesn't fit in the slightest, especially since there aren't even that many distinct fossil walruses to be based on. Also the whole "Dino fossil" joke fits better since marine reptiles and pterosaurs are often mislabeled as "swimming and flying dinosaurs". Your description of zolt was pretty on point though, I will give you that.
All in all I hope these 4 fossils are purged from future pokemon games. Replace them with the real forms and get these abominations against nature out of my sight. Not only do they look awful but they grossly oversimplify early paleontology which, as you said, was people trying to make sense of things no one has ever seen. I have never hated any pokemon design more than these four. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Fun fact: Dracorex is actually just a juvenile Pachycephalosaurs and/or Stygimoloch.
The biological implications of not only these Pokemon but potentially every Pokemon are also fascinating.
Like Dracovish. It's head is connected to it's damn tail. Biologically, that's wack.
I find it weirdly impressive that Cara Liss actually made it capable of surviving in that state. Though I'm also afraid to find out how she managed it.
@@MrAuthor3DS we should be afraid of Cara. Science can and will go too far
I like to think that the lungs and important organs of Vish are all located around its head. I mean it does have a rather big head, and the tail end of Draco sure as heck isn't supplying any organs like that.
@@burgermeister8261 well, how about everything from the neck down? It's neck is its tail, and it's throat would need to lead to it's stomach, and intestines and all the other important bits. The Draco ain't supplying that. Especially from the tail, upwards

I’m curious to see how the anime handles the fossil Pokémon
The police are still tracking down the scientist Cara Liss. She was last seen outside Stow-on-Side. The police have urged people not to allow her access to fossils. Ash doesn't listen and he gets a Dracozolt. Ash is now considered an accomplice of Cara Liss for crimes against pokemon.
Imagine Ash coming across the one route and there's just a ton of the fossil pokemon wandering around cause Cara Liss went way to far

I don't like where this is going...
The 4 fossil Pokémon assembled correctly will be
Velocizolt/Electrozolt
Dunkleovish/Aquovish
Dracostego
Arctosaur(It looked like Mosasaur if you ask me)
The Arcto- one reminds me of a Plesiosaur.
Arcto is a bird
Glob Herman that's zolt
Zolt was a bird, like archeopteryx, or maybe a small flying theropod, like microraptor/tetrapteryx
Rito CP fossilized fish is -vish
Fossilized drake is Draco-
Fossilized Dino is -zolt
And fossilized Bird is Arcto-
Tbh, Arctozolt doesn't seem very sad. He seems uncharacteristically happy regardless of his condition.
It’s not happy at all. Stop defending awful designs
i hope when the dlc comes out that we can get the other halves of the fossils so we can get the correct ones
As someone who was an avid dinosaur fossil lover when I was younger, hearing about how people sawed a trex skull in half just makes me sick.
“Need the proper hind limbs that act in a way that is classified in the group in Dino”
Effigia:So I am a dinosaur right?
Heads up Lockstin! There's a fair amount of mixup in terms of the content in the video. While I understand that Dinosaur pronunciations can be....awkward, there's a bunch of facts in this video that actually aren't true.
First of all Dracorex. It's name is actually Dracorex Hogwartsia, not 'Hogwartis', although that could have just been a mistake during the script process. But the bigger problem with it is the family. 'Draconis', as a family, does not exist, as Dracorex is part of the Pachycephalosaurus family. It's also not a Maniraptoran, which is what Dromaeosaurids (Like what Zolt is) is. Dracorex is a Ornithiscian, whereas Maniraptorans are Sauriscians.
Now for the tail part. It's 'Dragon' association and name could very easily be from the fact that Stegosaurids (Which it's highly likely to be based off of) are most commonly found in China, which, typically a lot of Dinosaurs dug up in China get the 'Long' suffix, as in Chinese for Dragon.
In terms of 'Arcto', Arcto seems to be a Plesiosaurus or Pliosaurus, which had short tails (With flukes, like what Arcto has). To add to this, the fact that Arctozolt walks but Arctovish swims could be a nod to the outdated belief that Plesiosaurs and Pliosaurs could haul themselves up onto land, something we know wasn't actually possible. And as a fun little extra bit of info, Arctozolt is walking upright in an unrealistic posture for a Dinosaur, possibly in reference to the outdated depiction of 'tail dragging' or 'Kangaroo posture' that was common until the Dinosaur renaissance of the 60's.
"and we're on the path to doing it again"
that hits different now.
"It's a little dinosaur pikachu!"
Putting it that way has made me dislike...zolt? We only see half of it, so I'll call it zolt.
If there's anything I can say 'bout Gen 8, it's that the pokemon's got pretty good concepts and designs... certainly could of had more of 'em tho.
This fossils are straight up body horror, I love them!
Originally, I thought these pokemon were absolute monstrosities and don't deserve this suffering. But now, Dracovish is my baby. I named mine Pörthing.
They still don't deserve this suffering, but I still love them.
The Jurassic Park velociraptors are actually based on Utah raptors, but the people making the movie either got confused or thought Velociraptor sounded cooler
I think it would be cool if Galarian fossil Pokémon had evolve forms which streamlined their hodge podge parts together into a more cohesive creature.
I wonder if the other halves of the fossils ended up in the mega evolution universe..

I would love to see the next generation that includes fossils go into the idea of the Jurassic Park way of making pokemon by having incomplete fossils that you have to combine with dna from already existing pokemon (maybe introduce a single frog-like pokemon whose characteristics build into each fossil in a subtle way or have each fossil have a pokemon that is somewhat similar to it that builds onto it, like combining an aquatic fossil with Sharpedo dna and it ends up being this Mosasaur with a face or coloration of sharpedo).
Please no more incomplete fossils. They need to fix the terrible gen 8 ones and make actual good fossil pokemon designs and no mockeries of fossil pokemon like paradox pokemon
To everyone saying that the fossils are ugly, they are your creations. Cara Liss just asked for two halves of fossils and you being the rude, terrible, 11-12(?) child that you are bring a bird half and "dino" half wanting to see zolt cold. You wanted to see vish have his head upside down or on the wrong side of his body. These are your creations.
*AND YOU NEED TO TREAT THEM WITH THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE*
Cause you are making them suffer, and they didn't want to be made so show a little respect.
Thank you
Dracovish already has alot of respect
But Cara liss never went "Hey, You don't usually see fish with legs" Or "Hey, this is the same fossil you used in your last revivial, but this other fossil is different, so I don't think they go together". She knew exactly what she was doing, she just hoped you wouldn't catch on.
Just lookin out for my fish, dragon, bird, and 'dino' buddies
I just want to put them back together the right way

Am I the only one who really liked these new fossil Pokémon? Yeah they're eternally suffering but the more jabs at paleontologists I see the more I get to appreciate their designs. Plus they all just look good to me on their own. Idk maybe I'm a sadist but I plan on using these guys in my various playthroughs of Sw&Sh. Was gonna use an Arctozolt on my first run actually, but I have Shield and I didn't know I could get all 4 fossil types until it was too late.
