  • The second National Park Unit that we visited in New Orleans in October 2019 was Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. There we saw alligators in the wild!

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is one Unit but consists of 6 separate sites. We visited two: the visitor center in the French Quarter of New Orleans and the Barataria Reserve. We also did the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour.

This type of ecology needs to be preserved! After hearing about the frequent floodings in Louisiana and surrounding swamps, I hope steps are being taken to preserve them.

Agreed, it truly is an unique ecology and I hope it does stay preserved.

Great videos of native flora, and fauna! Reminds me of when I was a wee lad living in Florida. Except instead of hummingbirds, we had 'skeeters ;^) Did you get to do any dispersed camping? Can't wait till Texas, as I've also lived in San Antonio (Lackland, and Brooks AFB), and in Killeen (where my Dad was stationed in the USACoE) so there's lots of miles 'tween Beaumont and El Paso (where my family moved to after Killeen). You'll love the White Sands National Monument (actually gypsum, not sand) too as it's as white as snow, but leaves you feeling greasy after rollicking in it! Safe, and happy travels!

No, we haven't been able to do any boondocking or dispersed camping in Texas yet as Texas has way less public land than other western states. Yup, we have been to White Sands, now called National Park and it was amazing! We shared our time there in one of our earlier videos.

If you want to see some alligators and crocs hike the Florida trail.

I just looked up Florida Trail. I didn't know there is a long-distance trail in Florida!

@@AdventurousWay I found this awesome site that pairs famous (and some not so famous) trails with camping, and a lot of it is dispersed! It's called TrailLink, and the url is www.traillink.com so that you can find trails anywhere in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. So many trails, so little time! Safe, and happy travels!

A 4yr old was snatched in the water by a gator around 5:30pm Friday while walking behind his mother on their way back to the car on one of the boardwalks near twin canals.Search efforts have been futile. So far the only thing found is one of the kids sneakers in the water😢😢😢😢

Alligators are more of a fresh water and crocs are more salt or brackish water creature.

Hmmm, when I lived in Florida, there weren't any crocs there, maybe you're thinking of Caimans? We lived on the north shore of lake Orlando, and a gator was parked under our dock, but he never bothered us, unlike the snapping turtles that were quite the nuisance! Also, Crocs are fresh water, which may be brackish, otherwise the Nile would be free of them completely.
