Mr. Gauger, et. al. I am a life-long drummer but an considering buy a new kit (Vistalite shells) and using RIMS, as through my research, I would prefer not to shell mount any vistalite shelled-drums. I can see you are responsive to questions through UA-cam and I thought I'd open this up to others as well. (I also had a question about your FT RIMS but will address that with the FT RIMS video in UA-cam separately). You mentioned (in a previous email to me) that RIMS could be used in a "basket" configuration, with the RIMS holding the drum in the bottom side/resonate head side of the drum. I was hoping to do this with the RIMS on the backside of the drum, thus allowing the RIMS to hold the drum without being seen, albeit with a clear vistalite shell, I realize LOL. But to this point, has any every configured a RIMS mount with tom like this, holding the drum in a basket configuration, on the back side? Thanks, Brendan
Hi Brendan, We have had plenty of people use RIMS® Alloy in a basket configuration before with no issues. People sometimes do this so they can get their rack toms closer together at the top. With our old steel mounts, the bottom configuration often did not work, as that is one of the examples where the chrome plated steel would begin to cause issues with its ability to isolate the drum's resonance. But the aluminum RIMS® have worked very well on the bottom. I don't think we've ever had someone place them on the back side of the drum the way you want to, but I don't think there would be any issues as far as resonance loss.
Can Gauger RIMS be used on Ludwig USA Club Date toms or George Way drum kit toms--toms with the centered-mounted lugs? I'm guessing yes, but the RIMS band will just sink down lower to reach the top end of the center-mounted lug once removed from an L-rod.
Yes, that is about right. The mount would probably just sit farther down on the drum when not mounted, but there should not be any problems with the RIMS® mount fitting and working on the drum.
Hi Ed, Sonor has several different tom mounts with slight variations for their Force series. Sometimes we need to modify one of our side plates to work with Sonor hardware. If necessary, we are happy to do the modification free of charge, we just would want to make sure we are making the correct modification. Does your bracket have three screws in a triangular pattern, or two vertical screws? You can also email us at info@gaugerpercussion.com. and send us a basic picture of the hole pattern on your mounting bracket, and we can easily let you know what will work best.
Is it better to have the mount divide the weight equally from top to bottom or side to side? I have mine set up with the ends on the left and right with the top of the drum angled up slightly instead of the mounts ending at the direct top and bottom sitting and facing the tom.
great instruction! one i need is how to assemble my 2nd stacked rack with Inverted cymbal boom arm's and some straight. have 13 toms on my lower rack and 4 in the bass drums but also have 3 on the Gibraltar pieces going up to the 2nd rack. I just need to know how to fit them all in with what I have and not spending a ton literally on special boom arm's or straight mounted hardware
Hi Tom. Yes, those will work fine with R.I.M.S.®. You will just need to choose the "Universal Plate" option. We probably sell more R.I.M.S.® for Yamaha kits than any others.
Alexander, Not too long after Gary Gauger invented RIMS®, it was licensed to a company called "Purecussion" and they produced the old steel RIMS® for many companies. We started making them ourselves again (as Gauger Percussion Inc.) in the late 90's when Purecussion went out of business and we got the product back. That's when we made improvements to the product's design.
Hi Jamie. Yes, RIMS® can be use with Pearl toms/hardware. If your toms currently have Pearl's Optimount system, you would just want to make sure to choose the "Universal" mounting plate option when you purchase RIMS®. Also, just make sure to choose the 10" 6 lug and 12" 6 lug option for RIMS® size/lug configuration.
Jamie, If you want to turn your 14” rack Tom to a floor Tom, you would want to order our Dynamount Floor Tom System. That way you can make a drum into a isolated floor Tom without having to drill any holes in your shell.

Would the half plate version work for Tama Quicklock brackets for floor toms? The ones without a plate and just two holes directly at the back?

i have a 10" six lug sonor force 1007 tom, with a 2" diameter (2 bolt) mounting bracket. would i need your universal plate or half plate? thx

Good video!
Can Yamaha type perpendicular (to the shell) hex arm mounts be used with these?

Did your company make the RIMS system for Remo back in the day?
