Good port of the game and if you ignore the fact that the gfx are 8bit, the game is better than the Mega Drive port as it just seems like a more complete experience. Like all these sorts of games though, the controls are absolutely awful and require pixel perfect timing to pull of the wanted moves. The game is probably also best enjoyed with multiple players to compete with.
I have recorded with the games FM sound, but it sounds a crap if im honest so I may record another run with classic sms sound. -

The Master System doesn't get the credit it deserves when folk talk about old consoles
Yeah, everyone seems to come in their pants over the NES to the point now where the games are ridiculously expensive. Can still get SMS games at reasonable prices though.
This game is legendary. It has some very unique graphics as well as music. And the sports themselves are funny, even though the graphics and music was what I essentially liked about this game.
Awesome graphics for the time
By far the best port of the game, one of my favourite titles on Master System.
Absolutely loved this game on the Master System; used to rent it out and the night I finally figured out how to do the half-pipe properly I begged my mum for 50p so that I could hire it out the video shop for another two days! Great days 👍🏼
Just remembered how i played this together with my sis..was a great time and game
Its so fun to see all the different versions of this game. They are all tailored just about perfectly to the system they're on and you really get a good look at what each platform's strengths and weaknesses were.
I'd love a shot of the Atari 2600 version, only found out recently that it ended up on there too.
Except the Mega Drive version, which is just crap
Amstrad CPC is laggy as hell, but it looks nice
If wondering, the intro song is called Louie Louie, by The Kingsmen
Thank you. I was trying to remember. I knew this song by the Motorhead version.
lmao, the music is ridiculously catchy! I also think this is the best port, the flying disc game is really fun. i played the hell outta this with my friends, good times.
Yeah, I'd argue that it even surpasses the Mega Drive version.
Meu Deus! Eu jogava muito esse jogo! Que nostalgia rever esse jogo do Master System
Used to play the old NES version of this when I was very young, way back in the day.
Being young, I wasn't very good at it, in fact I don't think I ever beat any of the games in it, but the animations were so goofy in the NES version that it didn't matter, it encouraged me to screw up, because it was so hilarious.
Great game...got it for Xmas 89 as a kid, and spent many hours playing it, not to mention the added bonus feature for getting the high score in an event was a nice touch!
Bons tempos joguei muito esse jogo.
sabia que eu ia encontrar um br hsuahsu
Aqui no Brasil esse jogo era febre. Quem tinha um Master, tinha Jogos de Verão.
Thanks for this i see the NES version and people trashing it everywhere but this is how i remember it
lembrou a infancia! Saudade do meu Master System! =/
That FM chip makes the Master System look better somehow! (I know its a sound chip but what I mean is having 3 or 4 square waves pierce your eardrums makes the SMS seem older and inferior to the NES.)
This isn't the original sound though. It's emulated, so it's a bit off from the original.
Back in the day if I had more than one friend with me we would reset the game if we won the foot bag reflexes (really just a slower bag and timer) which was usually an accident when going for the bike or surfboard. If there was 6 or 7 of us getting through footbag with the faster reflexes would take ages. You had to reset it or be bored out your skull waiting for your shot.
I used to play the NES version of this and holy crap... I never knew how bad it was as a kid I mean the music just cuts out during the hacky sack part of the game xD
I spend so much time playing this very port of California games!
And yes, its soooo true, i played all console versions and this one was head ans shoulders the best of them all ... BMX and surfing all the way!
So many good memories... Summer games is also fun (with the log rolling).
Agreed, best version by a country mile. Very fond memories of this one.
I was class at this game, I played it a little while after it wa released as I was only 3 when it came out. My uncle had a Master System & I'd play on it every weekend at my nans house as my uncle still lived at home at the time he was only about 20
This game makes me regret not having kept my old video game systems.
Crashed on head: Game over. It's good that they were aware of the dangers of CTE back then.
One of the most converted games. Was on a heap of systems.
What a game this was 🙌🏻
The bmx part was the best
BMX, skateboard and surfing were all great fun if you had a group of friends round. Was great trying to beat each other's records.
i used to love this and i remember thinking the graphics were amazing.
What a incredible midi. Good music. And awesome game.
It's an OPL FM synth, not MIDI💀
Master system was the best conversion much better than the nes and the SEGA Mega Drive, the Megadrive version lacked some events
Yeah, the colourful cartoony look of this version is part of its charm. Wonder why they removed the flying disc from the MD version? Surely there was enough ROM where they could have even added more events instead of less.
Bmx theme sounds like Batman 1960s theme lol. The tempo I think lol.
One of my favorite Games with Sonic on this console. We talk a lot about Megadrive but it was good too with Alex Kidd 😁
Surfing music was my favorite.
to get 9 on surfing just ride the wave and stay in it
I've had it a few times but the woman on the far right tends to give the lowest scores, whereas the young girl was usually quite generous even if you were pretty terrible.
What is the trick to the bonus tile flipping game?! I spent so many hours playing this as a kid and it really just seemed like complete random luck.
There is a bit of timing involved, I remember we had it sussed to the point of being able to get the new bike or surfboard every time. We never wanted the foot bag prize though because all it did was slow down the timer and the sack so if more than 2 of you were playing it would take ages to get through that event.
This version was better than Genesis. And most the music.
I prefer the original music over the FM sound in California Games.
Didn't Mark Cerny, Sony's lead hardware designer, work on this game?
Yep
I had this on the Atari Lynx. Good stuff.
Played this on our old Windows 3.1. And it couldn't handle the graphics very well so it ran very, very slow. Loved all the snarky comments when you crashed the BMX bike.
9:35 - That incredible moment that you stumble due a banana peel instead of slip. :v
My Childhood was so fun
I used to play this all the time on my brother's Commodore 128 back in the 80s. Visually, this blows the NES port out of the water but Epyx games were typically complete shite on the NES though. The controls were dodgy enough on their own in this game, I can't imagine having to use a Master System controller... I HATE that square directional pad.
The Master System pad lends itself well to this game, especially for events like the half pipe and rollerskating. I think those would be tricky on the NES pad.
Was this the game that said "Go Thrasher" and it was barely understandable?
god that beach ball used to annoy me in skating. I mean she would fall over!!! still feel angry about it now.
You are a Jedi.
I ALWAYS WENT SANTA CRUZ
Nice.
Omg I hade this game for the master system 😊
WE ALL KNOW FOOTBAG AND DISCUS WAS THE WORST
jontron slaughtered this game ;o;
The jontron fella sounds like a bit of a ball sack.
Is the version Sony's Mark Cerny coded for?
Sonic Rush??Is that you?
I owned the NES version, heh.
you´re the best!
Why is 2 not so good?
3:05 WTF that sport LOL
Eu tenho esse jogo!! Jogo até hoje!! (I have this game!! I play until today!!)
Aggro Man.
Looks weard 8 bit gfx but 16 bit fm sound.
weird*
Lynx had best ver IMO
I know my reply is a bit late but thank you I completely forgot about California games on the lynx, it was a cracking version.
Lynx was awesome, but it was missing 2 events
The version SMS is best Sega Genesis
Why is the sound so off?
It's using the FM Sound chip instead of the Master System's PSG chip.
Christopher Sobieniak - BLASPHEMY!!!
compet'
game
I prefer the Lynx Version. It had waaay better music, and great graphics for the system.
Joguei muito isso
tellement difficile
Kkkkk
The FM sound is Just awful
This game has FM tracks ? what a waste
i never understood why this game had good reviews.
Because it's a fantastic multiplayer game. I'm convinced that the people who dislike didn't have any friends.
