I was at a Gordon Lightfoot concert some 25 years ago in my city, at the end of the show the audience didn't want him to go, so Gordon came back on the stage just him and his guitar and played a couple more tunes by himself.

in '74, in cheney, washington, he opened with a medley- "if you could read / the patriot's dream". it was so beautiful and intense, he got a standing ovation that wouldn't stop. he stepped back to the mic and said "well, far out!" and continued with the concert. the night was HIS- from that moment.

Sadness. American here who just treasured this guy. I can remember back in the 1980s lying on the floor of my college apartment in NY listening to all four sides of Gord's Gold, his greatest hits album, and wondering what it would be like to be able to write songs like those. What a talent.

I have a documentary about the last train across Canada 🇨🇦 and it is a documentary that I saw on PBS many years ago. I did see him in concert at the Sonoma County Fair over thirty years ago. His passing is being felt all around the world, including the United States. 😢 thanks for the legacy you left us for years to come.

I grew up in Saskatoon in the 60`s & 70`s. There was only one tv station and a couple of radio stations so I had Canadian content crammed down my throat. That`s why I know so many of his songs by heart. When I hear a Lightfoot song I think of Saskatchewan. Does anyone remember the movie "Paperback Hero"? Lots of prairie footage with Gordon Lightfoot music. You can`t get more Canadian than that!

A very nice and distinguished gentleman - I met Gordon at a Canada Day concert in Cape Breton.
In 1994 my shoegaze genera band The Nightshade Project were performing at The Celtic Lodge on Ingonish Beach, Gordon was there but not scheduled to play, however the owner of the lodge persuaded him to do a few songs.
I had previously met him backstage, and told him ‘The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald’ was one of my favorite compositions, and was throughly honored when he invited me to play alongside him on acoustic. He complimented me on my band, and said he really liked the Shoegaze sound.
During two tours of Maritime Canada, fell in love with Canada and it’s people. 🇨🇦

His songs were stories of his personal life, Canada and events. Was fortunate enough to see him, Tom Cochrane, Murray McLaughlin and others at 2005 Mariposa Folk Festival! You will be missed by an entire nation and world wide.

Gordon also did some acting in a movie. He played with Bruce Dern (who I believe was Canadian too) in the movie "Harry Tracy". Dern played in a lot of old westerns like Gunsmoke and he was usually a "bad guy" as he was in Harry Tracy. Gordon was the "Law".

    Listen to the pictures flow
Across the room into your mind they go
    Listen to the strings
    They jangle and dangle
    While the old guitar rings
The minstrel of the dawn is gone
I hope he'll call before too long
And if you meet him you must be
    The victim of his minstrelsy.

    Ode to Gordon Lightfoot
Now they've gone and done it
    They've killed the golden goose
    High above the fireplace
Rest his songs of love and truth
    doctors sworn to slaughter
    Grim Reaper's bent on death
Their needle and the damage done
left him all too short of breath
    Now he's feeding daisies
    face up to the sky
Watching as the moon rolles past
Let us bid our last goodby
    Silver wings of summer
    Lift the minstrell on
    Carry him to paradise
    where the angels sing along
The loon will make her plaintive cry
    when winter comes again
What minstrel will console us now
We have lost a dearest friend
