  • Underground fire main broke. The break was in cast iron pipe and we patched in a piece of ductile iron pipe.

I do like the hours from the water main breaks lol. We have allot of contracts with some fire suppression companies. Allot of paper mills and factories. Gotta love when they never know what’s buried at their own factories 😂😂 in Wisconsin an it’s almost full blown winter will be doing lots of these

Why not make a permanent repair with solid sleeves and mechanical joints or Dresser couplings? Alpha or Hymax are temporary fixes

Why do you say they are temporary fixes? As far as I know they are listed for this use. It is the same as a solid sleeve and MJ's. It just takes a fraction of the time to install them. We just started using them a few years ago, but I have never heard or read anything about them being temporary. I'm not arguing with you, I'm just curious.

@@FireSprinklerTech Alpha couplings are perfectly fine and approved for permanent repair. I would be curious why anyone would think otherwise.

I wonder " how the ductile iron pipe cracked to begin with " ... they are buried six feet underground or so 🤔🤔🤔 and they last 100 years easy , manufacturer / material / casting failure 🤔🤔🤔

It’s actually not ductile iron, it is cast iron (grey cast iron) and I think it was more prone to stress cracking. Ductile iron came out around the 1950’s and wasn’t really popular until around the 60’s. That facility was built in the late 50’s so all of their underground is cast iron.

My only concern is you are at least 6 ft deep and no shoring.

If that cast iron pipe, couldn’t you use a snap chain cutter

I think you could. Typically it’s ductile iron pipe so we use a saw. We never know what the pipe will be until we get it dig up.

      Ductile steel, not cast iron

Do you work on any southtek nitrogen systems? If so, please make an informal video. They seem to be gaining popularity down here.

I have only worked on one. It was cycling too often. I found a couple leaks in the air line that where caused by excessive vibration because the installing contractor forgot to remove the shipping bolts on the compressor.
I have installed and worked on a couple of the ECS nitrogen generators. I will make sure to make a video if I work on any of the brands. Thanks for the input.
