Man, I picked up watching Asmongold a year or so ago, mostly for WoW content, and at first I thought he was brilliant! Like, playing this edgy UA-camr troll character while living in absolute squalor, the juxtaposition was *too* obvious!! But the more I watched, the more I realized he really does act and think that way, and just uses the "it's a character I'm playing" as a defense. When really it's just him, maybe dialed up a notch or two, and with some self deprecation here and there, but still just his views at the core.
When all this "woke" shit started up I remembered an old interview I hadn't thought about in decades. It was Kurt Cobain who notoriously wore lingerie, dresses, and ball gowns was asked why he wore that stuff he answered because he knew if something like that would piss you off you would leave his shows and he didn't want you there.... I think about that a lot. Think of it as a way to keep toxic communities away from your game

I honestly used to be a fan of Asmongold back in my WoW days. I personally cant stand the pseudo-centrist role he tries to pretend to play now and haven't watched him in a long time because of it.
The biggest crime here is making it seem like woke equates to bad. A game with minority identities is FINE. What makes a game bad isn’t representation, it’s the game design, yet people poison the evaluation of the game or media on its real merits and instead say it’s bad because of the characters. I hate these people so much.
Eh, sometime it does take away from the experience. The problem isn't DEI, it's bad DEI. Netflix Witcher DEI is bad, House of the dragon DEI is better, the original Avatar cartoon is great DEI. When the diversity make no sense it does make the universe weird and break the suspension of disbelief. Bad DEI in game more specifically it's more about bad dialog pushing a clear political agenda in weird obvious ways. If you want to criticize the patriarchy or whatever else don't make it throw-away joke lines every time someone speak that don't actually matter to the story, make it the story and something serious with the criticism underlying the story and not spelled out.

Hell a woman character in fallout 1 ends up literally founding the new California republic that you see in fallout 2 and fallout new vegas. And you see the remnants of it in fallout tv show. She was their george Washington, president tandi who was the president of the NCR while it expanded for decades in the lore.

At the end the point was even though people do overuse the word, people reflexively just have their guard up and reject anything whatsoever that could possibly be woke because they're just tired of it at this point so they're not going to give up any ground anymore. A big part of the reason that people call everything woke now is because western developers in particular have lost the trust with gamers. They've lost that benefit of the doubt so none of them get any sort of consideration anymore. Gamers know the people that make these games and they know what their intentions are because they're often pretty loud about it on social media and how much they hate gamers. It puts everything they do under extra scrutiny. For example, when you have a game that takes place in a medieval Europe type of world and 90% of the cast is not-white, its going to raise eyebrows. Whether you think that's valid or not doesn't matter, a lot of people are immediately going to question the intention behind that because it clashes with their understanding of the world so it comes across as incredibly inauthentic and forced. Again, whether you see that as valid or not doesn't matter. When your audience doesn't believe in your authenticity then nothing you do will ever be seen as authentic.

I'm a big Beth Head and I found Starfield to be boring. I just think their old formula just isn't as exciting compared to modern open world games that have spoiled players over the years. I played for about an hour of it after launch and refunded it as the story and gameplay did not hook me in. Different strokes I'm sure, but I feel they really need to improve their exploration and open world formula esp for ES6

In their worldview, minority characters are included to fill a diversity quota (like a form of affirmative action) and they are trying to argue against that but can't articulate it well. So I looked up the "air conditioning is sexist" article, and it is specifically about the air conditioning in a corporate office environment, where the standard for what the temp is set to was written in the 60s. The article points to several studies, and talks about how women statistically have lower body temps than men while "women are often pressured to wear sleeveless office dresses and fewer layers than men." It's just being silly about the issue of "we're too cold at the office and we should change the standard" But, I guess he'd have to read past the headline to know that.

Here is a game that was so under-marketed that no one even knew it existed until it was already a flop, clearly the problem was "woke"... Give me a break. Also, on the slavery topic: Even during its height in the US, the level of cruelty involved would have certainly varied... If you start trying to draw the line of what counts as "actual slavery" based on the level of cruelty is inflicted during its practice, then you are being irrational and disingenuous. You are making an argument that a slave owner would make, like house slaves don't count as slaves because "oh well it isn't like I am killing them if they don't work hard enough, I allow them to live in the big house so it doesn't really count". Saying forced labor of prisoners for profit doesn't count because they have a debt to society and we provide for them is just being an apologist for indentured servitude. Ideologically prisons are supposed to be about rehabilitation of criminals into productive members of society, not simply punishing people for being naughty. Calling it slavery may be a bit hyperbolic, but then again these prisons are often disproportionately populated with minorities and even named after plantations. I would rather be hyperbolic with the description than cede any moral ground to the type of soulless psychopaths who perpetuate these conditions for personal gain. People who cry about woke are using a term falsely, and incorrectly. It mostly doesnt even apply to these situations. They need to analyze the gameplay because the gender or sexuality of thse characters matter very little, and often these "woke" games aren't a good representation of the meaning. Often these games are outliers, and are just bad. Ubisoft has been shittin out Ac slop for a MINUTE. For honor has great potential, but is such an abusive micro transaction Rainbow as well.

i think it's more likely that most people don't care either way but struggle with the fact it's slightly paradoxical. People are encouraged to not treat people differently based on identity in daily life however media often emphasizes those identities to promote representation and inclusion. i agree that it's about ensuring that all people see themselves reflected and valued in society, rightly or wrongly, i dont think many people care about that
As a brown man. I've been trying so hard to find new youtube channels that talk about the negatives in the current Star Wars and video game new releases. I also don't hate women, and like seeing diversity. You can just guess how fucking difficult it's been finding channels that just talk about the actual problems with new media without randomly blaming every non-white man. I've followed this channel for literally over a decade. You have no idea how nice it feels that you haven't gone down the same road. It reminds me back to my high school days, were I moved to a small town for high school, a town that used to host the KKK. I got a lot of casual racist from nearly everyone, but there was a handful of white kids that absolutely defended me with anger. Anyone tried to pull racist crap on me and they'd get madder about it than I would. I'll never forget them, and always be appreciative of white people taking a stand against pro-white racism. And I do what I can to push back against some minority groups who like to blame all white people.

A great example of 'woke' for me was the Netflix series 'The Sandman'. Absolutely loved the series, but.. 80% of the people/couples in the series were gay, lesbian, etc. It just made it feel forced. A little 'over the top'. It didn't ruin the series for me, but it wasn't even subbtle haha.
I just dont like marry sues. I dont like women characters or black characters that are perfect and better than all the other characters because the force is female or whatever weak writing you use. I do think that kind of "wokeness" is cringe and bad. But not because of the gender or race of the characters its because of the bad and lazy writing. Its not something I fixate on so I don't have many example off the cuff, but I didn't like rey, captain marvel, or i think the lore behind orisa from overwatch. But I do like Mei's lore, Black Panathar was amazing, and I can give all kinds of examples from books I enjoyed with well done strong female leads. I do wish the criticism was about the writing and the story being told, and not them literally yelling diversity at the screen everytime a women or minority showed up. Even typing that it sounds like I am exaggerating or straw-manning them even though you literally played a video of the guy doing exactly that. Reality is stranger than fiction. My guess is Asmon would agree more with my take and assumes other people have the same critiscm or emotional truth when they exhibit the behavior and likely doesn't see or ignores the more blatant racism and sexism instances.

5:50 HEAVILY disagree, it's not "woke"(whatever that means) but it's also not even remotely quality show, even if you ignore all the lore breaks all the time Bethesda executives just virtually spit on Obsidian work with how they treated West Coast(Specifically NCR, and west coast BOS, making them just completely different from their portrayal in Classic Fallouts and FNV) It's also just boring, besides having Fallout coat of paint the show had NOTHING original, the cliche "the bad guys were le hecking evil capitalismus all along"(which btw, no, that was not the point of the Fallout and two, they butchered Mr. House and Sinclair characters, Mr. House is a maybe excusable bit, not everyone understands his character, but Sinclair was never portrayed as evil capitalist or fat) the boring main trip with near no chemistry (and Maximus was just so infuriating, even fallout polls on a channel that mostly enjoyed TV show, even that guys audience agreed Maximus was a terribly written character, he's so unsympathetic, the way he treated squire is just, ugh) And again, this is ignoring lore breaks, if you aren't staunch Fallout franchise enjoyers then the show is a 6/10, at best, at worst it's as insulting as Halo TV show towards it's fans aka a 2/10. Sorry for long rant, it's just, I hate how all good critique of the show was put aside because of anti woke channels like Synthetic Man making it look like the only people hating that show was anti woke crowd, when most of the Fallout enjoyers didn't like it(although it took time for them to realise it)
Also there are more and more critiques of Fallout TV show popping up so I recommend checking them out, many of them do not call it bad because it's woke, for example Creetosis made several streams watching the TV show and critiquing all bad writing and lore breaks, it's like EFAP but WAY smaller and no wokespotting(or at least I don't remember them calling anything woke, except maybe the final episodes with how writers wrote Mr House and Sinclair, that one I kinda get)
Regarding slavery, what you need to understand is chattel slavery is not the definition of slavery, it's a subset of slavery. Slavery is a broad term and chattel slavery is just the most extreme form. It's like saying if you aren't doing a Nazi Holocaust then it can't be a genocide. We can't let people redefine words by their most extreme presentation of that idea.
While words can have multiple meanings, there is nearly always a prototypical meaning that contains the most elements of what a word mean. From there we extend the meaning of a word to things not quite as ubiquitous. There is a reason that the word genocide came from the example of the Holocaust.
I don't mind the DEI stuff, but when it's obvious that it's put in a product or game to push an agenda or a political narrative then it's an issue. For lack of better words, if the DEI stuff stands out amidst everything else then it's a problem. If you put DEI stuff in the game, don't make a big deal about it, and make it so that it goes with the flow of the game and not having it stick out, then I say keep it in. It in fact adds to the experience as it feels natural, not thrown in to push anything.
There's games with diverse cast that are good, concord flopped because it's gameplay was shit. If it were a good game people wouldn't give a fuck about the characters. Apex, overwatch, more are diverse and no one talks about the diversity LOL

But when it takes the front seat and other aspects of the story are secondary, you end up with a superficial narrative with little substance. These games are being made with DEI being the primary objective and making a good story and game secondary. That's why these titles are being shut down.

Concord, while dealing with MANY problems among others, they intentionally made characters that attempted to “break the mold” of beauty standards but they also wanted the same success as Overwatch. NONE of the characters appealed to a mass audience in the same way. It’s baffling. Ghost of Tsushima fans have wanted a sequel to Jin’s story for half a decade and when Yotei’s trailer premiered it was at the absolute wrong time in culture because there’s been so much recently like Duskborn, SS:KTJL, Dragon Age Veilgaurd, Sweet Baby Inc, and more. I’m personally not on either side. I want to experience games with great stories and great gameplay. As a black man, I would LOVE to see more inclusion and diversity but not at the cost of quality. The problem is that the identity politics are the leading feature of some of these games. It’s not that trans/black/gay = woke. It’s the SHOEHORNED nature of some of these games where it feels forced or not natural. Where it feels forced in because of a real world desire to PUSH a real world narrative and agenda, not allow one to naturally develop in the fantasy world you are exploring. It breaks the immersion. You are correct that you don’t have to have a reason to exist as a human. However as a work of entertainment you DO have to have a reason to exist because you’re asking for people’s MONEY and TIME. Go ahead and make that type of stuff if you want but if it doesn’t sell well don’t cry about it. If people push back, don’t cry about it and demonize them. Don’t shut out the criticism. That isn’t very inclusive is it? You made entertainment for a niche audience or an audience that doesn’t exist. Man, I picked up watching Asmongold a year or so ago, mostly for WoW content, and at first I thought he was brilliant! Like, playing this edgy UA-camr troll character while living in absolute squalor, the juxtaposition was *too* obvious!! But the more I watched, the more I realized he really does act and think that way, and just uses the "it's a character I'm playing" as a defense. When really it's just him, maybe dialed up a notch or two, and with some self deprecation here and there, but still just his views at the core.
When all this "woke" shit started up I remembered an old interview I hadn't thought about in decades. It was Kurt Cobain who notoriously wore lingerie, dresses, and ball gowns was asked why he wore that stuff he answered because he knew if something like that would piss you off you would leave his shows and he didn't want you there.... It puts everything they do under extra scrutiny. For example, when you have a game that takes place in a medieval Europe type of world and 90% of the cast is not-white, its going to raise eyebrows. Whether you think that's valid or not doesn't matter, a lot of people are immediately going to question the intention behind that because it clashes with their understanding of the world so it comes across as incredibly inauthentic and forced. Again, whether you see that as valid or not doesn't matter. When your audience doesn't believe in your authenticity then nothing you do will ever be seen as authentic.

I'm a big Beth Head and I found Starfield to be boring. I just think their old formula just isn't as exciting compared to modern open world games that have spoiled players over the years. I played for about an hour of it after launch and refunded it as the story and gameplay did not hook me in. Different strokes I'm sure, but I feel they really need to improve their exploration and open world formula esp for ES6

You are making an argument that a slave owner would make, like house slaves don't count as slaves because "oh well it isn't like I am killing them if they don't work hard enough, I allow them to live in the big house so it doesn't really count". Saying forced labor of prisoners for profit doesn't count because they have a debt to society and we provide for them is just being an apologist for indentured servitude. Ideologically prisons are supposed to be about rehabilitation of criminals into productive members of society, not simply punishing people for being naughty. Calling it slavery may be a bit hyperbolic, but then again these prisons are often disproportionately populated with minorities and even named after plantations. I would rather be hyperbolic with the description than cede any moral ground to the type of soulless psychopaths who perpetuate these conditions for personal gain.

A great example of 'woke' for me was the Netflix series 'The Sandman'. Absolutely loved the series, but.. 80% of the people/couples in the series were gay, lesbian, etc. It just made it feel forced. A little 'over the top'. It didn't ruin the series for me, but it wasn't even subbtle haha.
I just dont like marry sues. I dont like women characters or black characters that are perfect and better than all the other characters because the force is female or whatever weak writing you use. I do think that kind of "wokeness" is cringe and bad. But not because of the gender or race of the characters its because of the bad and lazy writing. Its not something I fixate on so I don't have many example off the cuff, but I didn't like rey, captain marvel, or i think the lore behind orisa from overwatch. But I do like Mei's lore, Black Panathar was amazing, and I can give all kinds of examples from books I enjoyed with well done strong female leads. I do wish the criticism was about the writing and the story being told, and not them literally yelling diversity at the screen everytime a women or minority showed up.
Even typing that it sounds like I am exaggerating or straw-manning them even though you literally played a video of the guy doing exactly that. Reality is stranger than fiction. My guess is Asmon would agree more with my take and assumes other people have the same critiscm or emotional truth when they exhibit the behavior and likely doesn't see or ignores the more blatant racism and sexism instances.

It's also just boring, besides having Fallout coat of paint the show had NOTHING original, the cliche "the bad guys were le hecking evil capitalismus all along"(which btw, no, that was not the point of the Fallout and two, they butchered Mr. House and Sinclair characters, Mr. House is a maybe excusable bit, not everyone understands his character, but Sinclair was never portrayed as evil capitalist or fat) the boring main trip with near no chemistry (and Maximus was just so infuriating, even fallout polls on a channel that mostly enjoyed TV show, even that guys audience agreed Maximus was a terribly written character, he's so unsympathetic, the way he treated squire is just, ugh)
And again, this is ignoring lore breaks, if you aren't staunch Fallout franchise enjoyers then the show is a 6/10, at best, at worst it's as insulting as Halo TV show towards it's fans aka a 2/10.
Sorry for long rant, it's just, I hate how all good critique of the show was put aside because of anti woke channels like Synthetic Man making it look like the only people hating that show was anti woke crowd, when most of the Fallout enjoyers didn't like it(although it took time for them to realise it)
Also there are more and more critiques of Fallout TV show popping up so I recommend checking them out, many of them do not call it bad because it's woke, for example Creetosis made several streams watching the TV show and critiquing all bad writing and lore breaks, it's like EFAP but WAY smaller and no wokespotting(or at least I don't remember them calling anything woke, except maybe the final episodes with how writers wrote Mr House and Sinclair, that one I kinda get)
Regarding slavery, what you need to understand is chattel slavery is not the definition of slavery, it's a subset of slavery. Slavery is a broad term and chattel slavery is just the most extreme form. It's like saying if you aren't doing a Nazi Holocaust then it can't be a genocide. We can't let people redefine words by their most extreme presentation of that idea.
While words can have multiple meanings, there is nearly always a prototypical meaning that contains the most elements of what a word mean. From there we extend the meaning of a word to things not quite as ubiquitous.
There is a reason that the word genocide came from the example of the Holocaust.

The numbers don't lie. When the only value something offers is it's got DEI, it's gonna flop.
I don't mind the DEI stuff, but when it's obvious that it's put in a product or game to push an agenda or a political narrative then it's an issue. For lack of better words, if the DEI stuff stands out amidst everything else then it's a problem.
If you put DEI stuff in the game, don't make a big deal about it, and make it so that it goes with the flow of the game and not having it stick out, then I say keep it in. It in fact adds to the experience as it feels natural, not thrown in to push anything.
There's games with diverse cast that are good, concord flopped because it's gameplay was shit. If it were a good game people wouldn't give a fuck about the characters. Apex, overwatch, more are diverse and no one talks about the diversity LOL

But when it takes the front seat and other aspects of the story are secondary, you end up with a superficial narrative with little substance. These games are being made with DEI being the primary objective and making a good story and game secondary. That's why these titles are being shut down.

It’s kinda hard to take that at face value when he really doesn’t take that line of thinking anywhere and while also having an absolute catalogue of UA-cam videos with WOKE branded across the titles. Hutch, I’ve been watching you since the MW2 quickscope days… I am also a black man. I appreciate you for speaking from this perspective but there is a definite issue and it has created a very divisive line.
For example, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, why is the FIRST AC game set in Japan featuring a black protagonist? That plays hip hop music in the background when he fights? 😂 it’s baffling. Concord, while dealing with MANY problems among others, they intentionally made characters that attempted to “break the mold” of beauty standards but they also wanted the same success as Overwatch. NONE of the characters appealed to a mass audience in the same way. It’s baffling. Ghost of Tsushima fans have wanted a sequel to Jin’s story for half a decade and when Yotei’s trailer premiered it was at the absolute wrong time in culture because there’s been so much recently like Duskborn, SS:KTJL, Dragon Age Veilgaurd, Sweet Baby Inc, and more.
I’m personally not on either side. I want to experience games with great stories and great gameplay. As a black man, I would LOVE to see more inclusion and diversity but not at the cost of quality. The problem is that the identity politics are the leading feature of some of these games.
It’s not that trans/black/gay = woke. It’s the SHOEHORNED nature of some of these games where it feels forced or not natural. Where it feels forced in because of a real world desire to PUSH a real world narrative and agenda, not allow one to naturally develop in the fantasy world you are exploring. It breaks the immersion. You are correct that you don’t have to have a reason to exist as a human. However as a work of entertainment you DO have to have a reason to exist because you’re asking for people’s MONEY and TIME. Go ahead and make that type of stuff if you want but if it doesn’t sell well don’t cry about it. If people push back, don’t cry about it and demonize them. Don’t shut out the criticism. That isn’t very inclusive is it? You made entertainment for a niche audience or an audience that doesn’t exist. But it doesn’t even seem like they care about the audience that plays games which is what is causing this rift. They are just doing the thing and not asking any questions. Going back to Concord, who was that for? Overwatch players? The same people who have been simping for Widowmaker and Junker Queen for a decade? If you want to make a statement then go ahead. But why are people surprised when they can’t have their cake and eat it too??
edit: specifically with ghost of yotei people REALLY wanted a Tsushima sequel. Not an AC style anthology follow-up. It would have literally been a slam dunk to make the most straightforward decision. No one wanted the reset button hit on Tsushima. That’s why it feels disingenuous. What would assassin’s creed be without the Ezio games? Why would you hit the reboot button on a fan favorite character without giving him at least ONE more entry let alone a trilogy? People LOVE Jin and expected him to be like Kratos, Aloy, Drake, or Ellie. You’re telling me you only gave Jin Sakai ONE game? Really?? Just doesn’t make much sense from face value. And one last point on Concord, it wasn’t that the game had a diverse cast, it was forcefully diverse. I don’t have any issue with pronouns and I don’t believe people would have made it a big deal if the robot didn’t have them but that was only the tip of the iceberg. Going back to a point I made earlier the characters were intentionally designed to completely buck beauty standards and not be “traditionally” attractive or sexualized. That is a noble pursuit as a statement but as a BUSINESS, you tried to sell broccoli to people that wanted cake (no pun intended) and couldn’t understand why you went out of business 💀 it was “woke” as in their personal world view and political ideologies overshadowed the process of making a desirable game with desirable characters to play in a way that didn’t feel forcefully progressive. Overwatch has diverse characters everywhere but it’s not pushed in your face. They didn’t build overwatch in the idea of identity politics. It was built on the fact it was a game about super heroes getting back together and saving the day like a marvel movie. Not real world identity politics. And keep in mind these are thoughts coming from a neutral stand point! I LOVE God of War Ragnarok and Spiderman 2, games people threw out for having some “woke” elements. That doesn’t bother me. It bothers me when I can tell the art isn’t putting the art first. I play video games for the same reason I read books, immersion. Not to see myself “represented” I’ve never cared or thought about that before being in online spaces. I like being swept away in something fantastical, not reminded of reality.
I think like Hutch said 99% of anti woke people have bad definitions such as “woman = woke” but there IS a real phenomenon of wokeness and they simply are bad ideas that should be renounced. The fact that no one sensible actually renounces it enables the worst grifting people to get the audiences they do.
And to reiterate, inclusivity of minorities has nothing to do with being woke.
To use a funny example: the show version of House of the Dragon (particularly season 2) is pretty woke.
The BOOK VERSION of house of the dragon Fire and Blood, which includes the exact same characters and same # of women, with women at the forefront of the story: not woke.
Wokeness has to do with prioritizing inclusivity and progressive messages *above all other values* within a certain context . You are not woke if you start a coffee shop and hire a gay barista. You are woke if you start a coffee shop and announce “I’m not going to measure the state of my shop by revenue/customer satisfaction, but by how many gay baristas I have on staff.” That is the actual definition.
It's hilarious how just a few years ago anti-woke people said "look I don't hate the fact they're minorities, just write them well." Yet if something like Left 4 Dead 2 came out today they would lose their shit before even playing it despite Coach being most peoples favorite character.

AP article called "Prisoners in the US are part of a hidden workforce linked to hundreds of popular food brands" where prisoners are forced to work for corporations for pennies if any pay at all. The loophole in the 13th Amendment, where slavery is abolished "...except as a punishment for crime", is directly cited as the reason why forcing prisoners to work for minimal to no pay is "legal". So this isn't hyperbole, slavery is still alive in the US.
It's a slippery slope regarding removing someone's rights and then 'what' labor you delegate to them and how it's enforced. What happens when they refuse, how much do they work, for whom do they work etc. We have historical evidence of states and the federal goverment using prison labor of both guilty and innocent people where they are exposed to dangeorus work conditions like those on the railroad digging through mountains that were made of a particular stone in which the stone and powder got into your lungs and you die within a few years of doing it. Churning people of 'particular' targeted groups into that type of 'labor' and then going " Yes they are prisoners they DESERVE this, they gatta do 'Something'".
