Carlsen crushes AGGRESSIVE PAWN PLAY

  • Featured is the rapid chess game between Magnus Carlsen and Timur Gareyev from Round 5 of the 2023 FIDE World Rapid Championship. Out of a Ruy Lopez, Steinitz we observe early aggressive pawn play against Carlsen’s kingside. It’s instructive how Carlsen manages to, in time, take full advantage of the weaknesses behind Gareyev’s extremely committal 6th move.

    - Recognize aggressive pawn moves and their weaknesses (00:09).
    - Avoid reinforcing pieces that will be forced to move anyway (01:27).
    - Focus on development over immediate pawn threats in the opening (02:31).
    - Exploit static weaknesses created by opponent's pawn advances (02:47).
    - Opt for piece development over pawn moves in front of your king early on (04:01).
    - Advance your pawns only after your opponent's king position is clear (05:35).
    - Utilize open files and weak squares to position your pieces effectively (07:10).
    - Time your attacks when your pieces are optimally placed (09:03).

    The definition of counterattack. Carlsen needed to decelerate Gareyevs advance only a little bit to unleash it´s well coordinated answer, ripping open all gaps in black´s position. Most impressive is the cohesion of the white pieces that steamrolles over the opponent. Beautifull, and again: beautifully presented. Thx Jerry!

    At my lower level I get hit with the overly aggressive pawns more games than not, but I don’t always find a way to punish it even when I try to do general things like strike back in the center or get on with development. Great video showing how the GOAT does it.

      I started doing better against such pushes when I realized that very often your best course of action is to simply ignore the advance and not ruin your kingside. Pretty much as illustrated in this game. I used to consistently lose to pawn pushes along with piece sacrifices that destroyed my king safety, I mean it still happens but it's more rare at least. It makes sense that it's dangerous to try and defend with the pawns infront of the king since you'll be creating PERMANENT weaknesses that can't be fixed. I find that knights usually do extremely well in defending a castled king.

    As a beginner, I'm curious. Even though black was down a minor piece worth 3, the pawns were the same, and I'm just wondering if there wasn't still some fight left in black. Granted this would likely not be against someone as strong in chess as Magnus Carlsen, the World Champion, but I'm just thinking of I ended up in a position like black, are there still fighting chances with a minor piece down. I really dislike resigning.

    • @AlintraxAika
      @AlintraxAika 5 місяців тому +2

      If you were in a bullet game you could hope for a blunder, but in a rapid or classic game, only if the player is extremely low elo you could expect a blunder. When one opponent is a piece down the easiest approach is to exchange all the pieces to increase the advantage of being a piece up.

    • @vibovitold
      @vibovitold 5 місяців тому +1

      i don't think so - Black king is extremely vulnerable, and Black has no counterplay whatsoever. it can't attack the White king in any way, it cannot even consolidate, because the position is already torn apart irreversibly. in terms of engine evaluation, Stockfish assesses the position as +8.6, so it's curtains. for practical chances to emerge the players would probably have to be "downgraded" to 1500 Elo level or so.

    • @s1dew1nd3r4
      @s1dew1nd3r4 5 місяців тому

      I dont think so - as the only real move is black queen to take the white knight - white queen then takes black queen - next only move is black pawn attacks white pawn then loses that to the black queen - ruck comes across and its curtains. @@vibovitold

      At beginner level, it's okay, and advisable, to never resign. It's also normal for a beginner to have a hard time understanding why masters resign, just as you'll have a hard time understanding any part of their games. Gladly, you're not one of those who criticize those professionals for resigning and turning it into some lecture about how you should never give up and fight until the end. Those are the people that the chess community is sick of. As your chess improves, it will start to make sense to resign. You'll also gain an understanding of when it's a trivial win for your opponent at your level. Of course, at complete beginner level, nothing is trivial, so playing until checkmate is reasonable.
