Always great to hear the debate on digital verses analog. My studio represents my assessment of the debate; it is 100% hardware, I use one to four voice analog synths for solo leads, and I use digital synths for all polyphonic needs. And I use unison digital synths for solo leads such as a 4 voice ACB Roland Boutique in unison. And I will only use analog synths when sampling. (I use a computer to master only, otherwise the studio is 100% hardware including a hardware 24 track recorder).
Great content this stream Nick, Richard, Steve & Paulee, a lot resonated with me (at my age .... !). See the Sonic crew following Friday evening in Bath FC clubhouse - ticket bought before Nick even thought about the next EMOM #4 !! 😁🙌🎵🎶🎹🍻
What a crime. Richard didn't mention that Pittsburgh Modular's new module, Local Parks, is all about manipulating square waves. I think Nick might have been more than a little interested... A wonderful panel and it was lovely to hear everyone's insights.
Miss my Korg MS2000. Great synth. HUGELY Underrated synth. I know Korg have a new MicroKorg. I'd love a new MS2000, with the same hands on control of the original.
HI Nick and Company, Really good discussions always. Regarding Elyra from BLL Instruments, I agree completely it's not a keytar - it has a Fret Board. I do think it's a great way for guitarists to access synths. Sorry Nick (btw I totally respect you and really enjoy your content) but I take slight umbrage with the comment that keytars are for only emulating real guitars and playing basslines. For starters synth guitar is a completely different thing. Preset 004 on the JD800 sounds NOTHING like a real guitar but it is IMHO one of the greatest lead sounds you could play. Then you have all your funky synth lead solos and not to mention your talk box and vocoder stuff which is far better from a performance point of view on the Keytar. I really don't see why there needs to be a PRO/AGAINST Keytar debate it's just like playing any other synth.
Had the CR-78 for 5 days now ... every time I switch it on it gives me song ideas and boy does it groove ... great sounds ... really easy to use ... I'm even thinking of it when I'm not in the studio ... I think that may mean I'm infatuated! ... less than £50 ... it's the bargain of the year.
CR78 is still my favourite sounding drum machine. Steve got it bang on... it's small in sound, but satisfyingly full and round. It really draws you in. It ticks all my nostalgia buttons and makes me want to make music... which is nice. 🙂
Keytars: Guitars have an audience advantage because the playing surface faces the audience. A keyboardist cannot play with both hands on a keytar or guitar positioned keyboard. Keytars are not the answer to bring a keyboardist center/front stage. A standard plain rectangle keyboard with a strap suspended by the shoulders hanging over the hip area of the body with the back of the keyboard flat against the body would be a good position. The audience would view the instrument upside down but have full view of the playing surface. Now the keyboardist can really show off for a short time.
That is not correct Pollie, Modern computer systems and software utilise Modelling not sampling There is NO “stepping” in Vst’s as long as long as they virtualise original Dco instead of sample it…
That Elyra is total cringe, like someone playing with their PC keyboard. Playing one on stage would be absurd. If you MUST use a Keytar (please don't) get the Roland for the full cheese effect. (but please don't, we buried keytars for a reason).
Keytar designs are always terrible. My favorite has always been my KX5 with small keys. But even so, they should always have either all black keys or reverse keys. Suzuki wood melodions are a step in the right direction. Never the standard white/black keys.....never never never.....looks so dumb.
@@bllinstruments If it was, then it would have physical knobs, buttons, etc... Having to hunch over and STARE at it, ruins the entire standing performance aspect.
@@ChrisP3000x maybe our demonstrator is getting his bearings and looking at the instrument too much, but I admit I don't understand your point, many good guitarists or bassists play by looking at their neck, right?

Excellent discussion today! Good digital oscillator options for me would be the Korg Z1, Nord Lead 2 & Access Virus Indigo....

A wonderful panel and it was lovely to hear everyone's insights.
Very enjoyable and informative episode.
There are no keys, so it is not a keytar. It has buttons, so buttar?
Or synthar, or synth ? ok we choose Elyra, like E-Lyra you know
Keytars make me think of Edgar Winter Frankenstein, Prince, Gem and the Holograms, 80s Pink Floyd, and those SH-101 ads.
Really great show!

Strawberry Switchblade!
Richard, please, make the VRL2 as easily available in Europe as the West Pest was!
It will!
Great to see Richard on the panel. Nice tee Steve are Strawberry Switchblade t-shirts still being made? Would love one, love that album.
I honestly don't know, but I adore that album too.

This is exactly our goal, to allow us to have the versatility of the synth sound, while keeping the dynamics of the guitar playing!

If you close your eyes and just listen, especially around 31 minutes in, Richard Nicol sounds a *lot* like Penn Jillette
With magnifying lenses for glasses, lol
I haven't seen anything like that in a long time.
Nevertheless, it's cool to have a dev on the show.
That's a new one! Usually he gets Seth Rogen 😆
Hardware Dco as mentioned is identical to software Dco
What you are paying for by getting hardware is instant hands on control

Surprised no one mentioned Richards Atari game collection. Or maybe it's 8 tracks? Too blurry to read 😮

Strangely not released by Roland Cloud yet ?
@@leslie1526 I found Roland Cloud too annoying and got rid of it. 🙂
I'd love to have heard Peter Gabriel's 'Bilko'. 😀
Strange that Roland hasn’t released CR78 yet as part of their Cloud service….?
Than again, Roland hasn’t released any new instruments since 2022 😮
They updated some of their recent drum machines's firmware and included a cr78 kit
Chainsaw is one of the sweetest hardware digital oscillators, no doubt
I love referring to badly designed interfaces as "mean spirited." Made me laugh.

What a brilliant show ... I really, really enjoyed that. Well done all.
a particularly good episode.💙

Some of them use sampling 😊, anything with wavetables is essentially very short looped samples.
9:20 they will be 15-16 and that is worrying 😅

it's true that it's not a keytar, it's more of an electronic guitar with string and strumming type zone
