.Captured the soul and beauty of this tune so well. I wouldn't have found Josh Turner without this incredible version of The Red Pony. 10 years later and still keeping it real.
Just blows my mind how awesome Josh is. So extremely talented and has been since the first video’s I seen of him as a young teenager. All his hard work surely is paying off.
What a tone that guitar has! The window cleaners of that library, ? college are absolutely first rate! Whatever you touch you render the piece beautifully!
You are always a pleasure to liten to. Next time I'm around Butler I WILL look for you. PLease, stop down in southern Indiana sometime...you can have all the tranqulity you need...on my porch of course. LOL
That was a good rendition of Red Pony. Like you John Fahey is one of my favorites. Mississippi John Hurt is also a great guitar player if you like the Blues.
I particularly like that you waited until you had a guitar similar to the little Bacon & Day Senorita Mr. Fahey used in his early performances. Now for some early Kottke...
Amazing Josh i wondered if you ever heard of Fahey, i met and knew him in Maryland 40 yrs ago.. he's one of the best at his style of playing. Your skill's amaze me..
Funny how you hear stuff for hours as a child, then as an adult you realize just how much you love the sound, like hours worth of John Fahey playing through an 8-track player in a hot Nova with the windows down in the middle of the summer.
I just saw your other fantastic Fahey song and had to come check out this one again, and HOW THE HELL did you have this much talent EIGHT YEARS AGO? No wonder I can't play for shit...you stole all the talent.
Nice job! I played Fahey's "The Transcendental Waterfall" for a philosophy student friend back in the early 70s. I'd like to think it changed his life ;)
I knew John Fahey well and produced his Yellow Princess album in 1968. Josh Turner plays Fahey better than anyone else alive. Better than Fahey himself did, in many ways.
I was thinking the same haha, never heard Fahey play this song this well, not even his Hamburg concert from '78, that I believe Josh is inspired from in this rendition, which is my favorite Fahey version of this song that I can find. This is just technically beyond Faheys ability (and my own so far). Crazy that you produced Yellow Princess!! As Fahey enthusiast (mildly speaking) I'd be more than interested in any alternative takes from that record you still possess? Or basically any Fahey related historical content not already traceable online. I can send you my email, if any of that is realistic :)
That's blasphemous. Josh maybe plays a bit faster than how Fahey plays, other than that, his cover is pretty much inferior to the original in every way. Fahey hits the strings clearer, has better timing, and produces a better sound overall. Also, although this cover is amazing, it's not the best I've heard. And it definitely doesn't triumph over the original.
You obviously don't know a lot about Faheys technicality or Joshs for that matter :) I prefer Faheys original recordings as well, but there is no doubt Josh is a better guitarist when it comes to objective technique on a guitar. notice where josh places his triplets and rolls. Same places Fahey had trouble fretting in time and therefor sounds muted on most of his recordings. I realize you consider Fahey a god, and his creativity is definitely god like, his guitar skills not so much - he's still a great guitarist and my personal favorite of all time, but I'm not blindly believing that he's technically better than so many others :) have a good day @@pd-hz9vf
@@LonesomeLeftistI don't consider Fahey a God. The remark about blasphemy was obviously metaphorical. I also never said Fahey was a better guitarist technique wise than Josh. I only said that he played red pony better. Your reading comprehension doesn't seem good.
Fahey must have been a John Steinbeck fan, cuz one of Steinbeck's most "underground" novels is "The Red Pony," which was banned in lots of public schools for its "sexual symbolism." It's a cool, effed-up story, and of course Fahey was also effed-up, in a cool sort of way. In the early 80s Fahey did a series of instructional cassettes for Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop -- he was absolutely wasted, and giggled like a girl through all six cassettes. :-)
Funny.. my school.. had us read TONS of controversial stuff like Huckleberry Finn and The Catcher in the Rye. In fact, I clicked on this because I loved The Red Pony as a kid.
Definitely my favorite cover of this tune from Fahey, really beautiful. Anything you could recommend for someone currently practicing this style of playing. More specifically picking patterns of other songs that could challenge and strengthen my finger dexterity. Learning this tune has given me difficulty but has taught me a lot. Any help would be rad....and I just saw 'busted bicycle' in the similar videos. Damn, look forward to watching that.
People walking by like nothing is going on. LoL! I’d be looking for the hat or guitar case where I could throw money, thinking to myself, man this kid is talented why is he busking on the campus steps?

Really faithful to the essence of Fahey's original arrangements, but with some excellent and very tasteful personal touches. Marvelous playing, Josh.
Glad to see that Fahey’s music is reaching new generations. He was a musical genius and deserves to be immortalized.
I listen to this again EVERY time I see it in the related videos or in my suggested videos. LOVE it!
Just blows my mind how awesome Josh is. So extremely talented and has been since the first video’s I seen of him as a young teenager. All his hard work surely is paying off.
How in the world does a young man in today's musical environment get on to John Fahey? Brilliant!!
Fantastic! Best rendition of this amazing piece by John Fahey I've ever heard. Thanks.
I keep coming back to this. Absolutely wonderful.
Love the discordance of Fahey, the guy was an absolute genius. Nice take.
If I close my eyes I swear to god it's John Fahey....................EXCELLENT 10 ON 10,YOU NAILED IT.............a very haunting melody
Marvelous performance, Josh. John Fahey is also one of my influences.
Rik from Belgium ( guitar, harmonica, organ player)
What a tone that guitar has! The window cleaners of that library, ? college are absolutely first rate! Whatever you touch you render the piece beautifully!
I so respect that someone of your age digs playing this.
WOW! Incredible - you have the sound and style down perfectly. I would think I was listening to Fahey himself!
For never hearing the original version, this sounds perfect. It was awesome!
Fahey and Kottke taught me how to play guitar. Thanks. Perfect.

Why is everyone just walking by and not stopping?? Josh, wonderful again
Absolutely gorgeous!

VERY well done! Love it! And what a wonderful guitar that is ...
Well played man! You're a truly excellent musician.
Well worth waiting for, that was great, as was Fahey.
Just when I think I've heard my favorite acoustic piece....now this one is "it".
great video... the location went perfect with the song. awesome job.

My favorite Fahey song. You do him proud!!!
Excellent as always.
A truly excellent version!
wow, what a great sounding guitar man!
Tremendous... Wow. So so good
Beautiful!
So extremely well played.
Totally awesome.
Great work Josh!
Beautifully played!
Excellent!!

Don't be a petty little boy please.
damn good man!... super duper cool!!
I agree with you Josh, I like John Fahey and the guitar is a great choice for this - perfect my friend. If you made any mistakes...who cares!
Very cool!
Well done man. Good sound !
crazy great! Classy....
Eric Clapton de guambra. Eres un maestro saludos desde latinoamerica Ecuador
I like the red pony!!!
Can you play the The Rain Song? (Led Zeppelin). Boy I'd love to hear you play that! You're one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Amazing, Josh!
Very nice! I'm a big Lindsey Buckingham fan and this has that same vibe!
you have got to explain to me how you got these people to just walk past you without even acting like they heard this..
Green screen
Guessing most people stay away (or back) when they see the cam or mic. I know I would
Some people are busy

Nailed it!!
very nice cover man

this guitar sounds amazing! can somebody tell me the exact model?
Nice Job.
i admire you, my american friend
DADGAD is it? Like Rory Gallagher in "Out on the Western plain"
WOW !!
WOW!!!!!

well said!!
I'd like to see a longer version please :-) Also, can you do Catfish in Bloom? It's my favourite but I'm too lazy to learn it. I don't ask for much ha
Lame. Why even post such crap?
Anybody know if that's an OF (folk) or an OA (auditorium) guitar model? Sounds like a nice fingerpicker.
Probably an auditorium or orchestra size
I love this. do you plan on doing more fahey in the future?
Even better than the original!
Please please please play blackest crow! it is such a pretty song
This is fantastic. Which recording is this based on?
Great performance! I am curious to know if, not counting the thumb pick, you play we three fingerpick or two ? Tks to let me know.
at 0:49 mark, the video shows his ring finger on his right hand does not have a pick
is it safe to say your parents exposed you to ALL kinds of music? I love it.
real nice kid!
He's not a kid
AKA Walk On By... :-)
In front of Winona Junior High School?!
Not usually my favourite guitarist composer but this sounded good....
essence of Fahey but much more polished technically! Fahey was always a little rough around the edges.
So John Fahey taught classical guitar in Hogwarts, makes sense.
Amazing by the way
Your badass, what tuning is this song?I've been trying an open d minor tuning seems a bit off.
I would gladly "pimp" for you as a street musician here in Italy. Better than working for a living.
Kent ?
Hey Josh I started playing this recently. I'm having a hard time finding accurate tabs. Which are you using?
What kind of strings?
Was this in drop d?
i find it strange that people are just walking past you and that you don't have the whole campus standing around watching you...
It is kind of funny, but this video proves that the common passerby can't recognize greatness, even when it is right in front of their face.
to busy listening to garbage pop music. makes em deaf.
Josh is fantastic!
If I heard this I would stand very quietly behind the camera, not in front of it. So how would you know?
you're a bad man
so what are you studying in school anyway? music or something else?
Is this open C ?
Gibby pretty sure its DADFAD
Many mistakes but still nice to hear to
I don't wanna bother you with the same nationalistic s*it we hear all the time but......... is that an Italy Tshirt that you're wearing?
Beautifully played!
