Tarndie is the homestead where the Polwarth breed of sheep was developed by Tom's ancestors around 140 years ago. Tom takes us through the history of the breed and the homestead, and tells us why Polwarth wool is now a favorite around the world.
Sydney Crabaugh, from Brooklyn, New York, also known as Squidney Knits, is our guest on Knitters of the World. From the Women's Land Army to the Bluebell Bolero, Sydney will take you back to the fifties and leave you smiling.

Fabulous interview with Tom. So good to hear how they are managing their land, and wonderful to hear of their grass to yarn integration. Must get there one day - only a couple of hours from home.
Andrea, my dear girl! I am a lot like you--I get onto a craft and work it excessively. Having said that--you need to take care with your sewing so you don't get stress strains in your neck and shoulders and wrists. Make sure you are working ergonomically. Love the show.

Thank you Andrew and Andrea and Dennis!! As a knitter and fibre lover this story really struck home. How fortunate we are to have these families hang in there and find a way to supply us with the fibres we love. Have just used a yarn supplied by one of my local yarn shops; "Fibrations- Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada" that contained Polwarth fibre and this episode has enhanced my appreciation of the unique properties of the wool. Right back to the source. All the best to Denis and his extended family in their ongoing work. He hit the nail on the head with his characterization of "adaptation"!!! Just loved the Tarndie story so much. It reminds us as knitters to think of the story behind our yarn. So interesting to hear that the original flock of Saxon Merinos came from Tasmania where I live.

I love the interview and to learn more about Polwarth. I just ordered in bare Polwarth yarns to dye this month and the result is excellent, Polwarth takes the dye really well and it's soft and woolly. 😊💕

Thanks for keeping the bit in about how they're managing the grazing. He didn't mention this but that approach is also great for addressing global climate change as well as for improving biodiversity (see Biodiversity for a Livable Climate if you're interested in all that) . I'm now even more thrilled to be processing, spinning and knitting with Tarndie Polwarth, which is perhaps my most favorite fiber to work with! Great interview!
I love the floral dress. The print has so much depth. Most of the prints these days are rather flat with little cutout shapes. It's nice to see a floral print with all the subtle color shadings on all the flowers.

Great episode, thank you Andrea and Andrew. The interview with Tom was really interesting. I particularly appreciated his explanation of the Indigenous language of the region and the connection with the name of his farm. I live near Bega, NSW (Yuin country), and it always gladdens my heart to hear acknowledgement of the ancient culture of our land, and it's first peoples.
