This was 1969. Back then many bands simply didn't want to travel here due to the distance and difficulty of getting here, so local artists would cover overseas hits for the Australian audience - who could then go see these guys play them live. It's a big part of why the 70's and the 80's were so rich musically in this country - a massive gig circuit grew up here, all the bands played live all the time and were very, very good at it. It's where Jimmy Barnes, Iva Davies, Michael Hutchence, Glenn Shorrock all came through, and their bands were Cold Chisel, Icehouse(Flowers), INXS and Little River Band. Other notable bands that didn't make it big overseas were Sherbet, Skyhooks, Divinyls, Angels, just to name a few - and all were just as good live as their studio work. Those first 4 all became world famous, and were big at one point either in the USA or the UK, or both.
@David McCarthy: What you said about most of those acts that didn’t make it outside of Australia is kinda right, but The Divinyls released “I Touch Myself” in the early nineties, which became their biggest hit (#1 in Australia, #4 in the US).
Growing up as a 60’s child here in Australia, John always seemed to be on the airways, which was a good thing! Another great Aussie singer is Russell Morris singing “The Real Thing”. 👍🏼😎🇦🇺
@@carolcarol3938 As a 64 model Evie is my favourite of all time. Remember when there would be a juke box in a fish and chip shop I would always ask my Dad for the money to put it on. Dad always would give me the money.
Love your reaction. You've seen the mature John and now you see our Johnny back in the 60s when he started. This is a cover version. He did a few covers including Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. In the 60s and 70s he was a hit - The King of Pop in Australia but it got to the point he was considered "too nice" and radio stations wouldn't play his songs so it was his hit in the 80s (You're The Voice) that brought John back to us. When you see John's fans saying how much they love him, and what an institution he is in Australia, you see why. What an amazing career he's had. Hits in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. Some musical theatre thrown in there too, a TV show, variety shows and so many concerts, especially in his hometown of Melbourne. He still sings some of his covers, including ONE, at concerts but the fans go crazy when any mention of his hit SADIE is made. You could listen to that one just for a laugh but the quality of his voice was always there.
In Australia at that time (60's) we often had on the airwaves an Australian singing big numbers rather than the overseas versions. It was quite interesting when you eventually learned that other singers had actually sung the originals. Johnny, as he was called more so in those days, was loved by all and did a few like "Raindrops keep falling on my head". I remember if he was on tv, the family came running to watch, particularly my Nan. He has always been brilliant.
Wasn’t there some sort of royalty payment issues for Australian radio stations playing records by overseas artists and they boycotted them? Instead local artists began recording covers.
@@NeilJR I believe it was something like that but I was still very young and not as savvy regarding those things as I am these days looking back. Yes, John (01July1949) was 19-20 there in 1969. "One" was a Harry Nilsson song, also sung by Three Dog Night. Watch a mature John sing it in the Whispering Jack Concert on UA-cam in the 1980s. Your channel brings me joy, thank you.
John was 'discovered ' and signed after he performed at the town hall in Cohuna in northern Victoria (my home town) many years later he came back to perform on the back of a semi trailer in the street to revisit and thank the town. Almost all of the 2500 population came to see him and he didn't disappoint 🙌

Love your comments. Did you know that John F went through a dark "forgotten" patch in the 80"s in which he was relegated to humbly performing in small RSL and sports clubs as a so called washed out singer. It was during this period that hard core fans kept him afloat and he re-invented himself into a belting, performing singer. A new generation discovered John and by the 90's he was famous again and has never looked back. His life story would make a great movie ... also Jimmy Barnes's story would be sensational.
yeah all of that us true I can remember my mate telling me when Whispering Jack ( which was his "come back album) a younger person asking him hey have you heard the new bloke called John Farnham? when as you know he was big in the 60s and the 70s
I was one of those hard core fans. His talent always deserved more, and so glad to see everyone finally wake up and he get the accolades and the legend status he truly deserved. Even better that a new generation are now finding him. Love you John!
the purity in his voice is awesome but yes when he was 50 years old his live version was so powerful and high ithe high bits were like a whistle it hurt my ears which i loved, also no falseto in the more recent JF

This was done in 1969, when he was 20. It was a Three Dog Night song, and if I remember rightly They were both on the radio in the same era. That song takes me back. I was 9, and my older sister played it over and over and over. I can't say I like it now, but I can appreciate his emerging talent without hating it like I used to.
This reminds me of Saturday nights at home with my mother, sister and close friends. We would take turns playing 45’s on the record player while singing along and dancing all night long. This song brought back that memory to me. Now I’m a grandma and we have karaoke nights which are just as much fun.
One was first recorded by Three Dog Night in the 60s. In the late sixties the Australian music Industry had a ban on overseas music in support of local artists. John covered this and Raindrops keep falling. A famous cover of Beatles song, Dear Prudence was done by the late Doug Parkinson a gravelly voiced Aussie singer of the sixties. Deffo worth a listen to. I think the ban was lifted in 1970 from memory. I used to own a little pocket radio and laid awake until midnight to hear my Favorite station play overseas music. I was a lot younger and certainly better looking then lol!
Mate, you were just on my radio station here in Brisbane, Queensland. They were playing Jimmy & John doing When Something Is Wrong With My Baby & next thing your voice was coming out of my speakers saying that you believe that Barnsey & Farnsey are the best male vocalists. I couldn’t believe it, see how much we love you down here 💕💕🇦🇺
Watch a live version from his concerts in the 80’s/90’s - he developed this song so much with his voice as he got older and the falsetto is much more punchier
I was never much into John until he joined the "Little River Band". I think that was when he perfected his voice and I went "WOW":. He is such a treasure to Australia and a nice guy too.
There are many out there in UA-cam land that are doing reaction videos but you my man are the king. You may not have the fancy words but you get it and we get where you are coming from. Keep up the good work.
John Farnham born in Essex England, moved to Australia at the age of 8 very very underrated artist, like most who don't come out of Britain or America 🇬🇧🔥👌💓
John was born 1949 - I saw him live at an outdoor venue in the rain in 1989, have seen him many times since he’s always amazing. Have a signed copy of Whispering Jack (vinyl) - prized possession.
One Is The Loneliest Number - best known by Three Dog Night 1968 (written by Harry Nilsson III, who wrote "Everybody's Talkin", and had a hit with Badfinger's "Without You") Johnny's first hit was "Sadie the cleaning lady" (he still references it today).. He did this in about 69, it was only 12 months old.. (they did that back then, record other peoples' hits)
John (called Johnny back then) was "King of Pop" for five consecutive years from 1969-1973. Harry Nilsson wrote and performed the original "One" but it was made popular by "Three Dog Night" when it hit number 5 on the US Billboard in 1969.
“You could hear that there was so much growth going to happen” - most insightful comment I’ve heard on UA-cam for a long time - well said my man………👏👏👏👍👍👍
I remember hearing an interview he did about the making of Whispering Jack and 1 of the tracks on that...he was recording it and happy with it at first, then slept on it overnight and didn't like it as is, so he had another go at certain parts of the song and nailed it...he came out of that with a changed voice he said, HE didn't even realise he could sing like that with so much power, he had always sung with that softer voice ike in this version.
John had his 1st No1 hit at 17. It went to No1,and he then went on to have a no 1 hit in each of five decades. John was born in 1949 and is now 72, and still singing. I'm guessing hewas about 19 in this video.
ONE was written by Harry Nilsson in 1967 released by Harry Nilsson in1968 and "Three Dog Night" released a version as well in the late 60s .. I Think Johnny Farnham recorded this in 1969/70. John also released a Single (45) called "Rock Me Baby"..And yes I've got all 3 songs in my playlist ♥️♥️♥️
Amazing to see John Farnham’s career through your eyes, he’s grown so much and he was already great - he sang that song so much better when he was older
Hi from Brisbane Australia, I love watching your reviews and hearing your comments. Ty. If u have a chance check out John singing with Human Nature singing Who’s Loving You. It’s amazing.
From Wikepedia: "One" is a song written and recorded by Harry Nilsson and made famous by Three Dog Night whose recording reached number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100[2] in 1969 and number four in Canada. It is known for its opening line "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do". Nilsson wrote the song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep, beep, beep, beep..." tone, writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes. In 1968, Al Kooper released the song on his debut album I Stand Alone. In 1969, it was recorded by Australian pop singer Johnny Farnham, reaching number four on the Go-Set National Top 40 Chart
Hello from Australia - Thank you for reaction to John's 'One' - You are right, 'One' was written by Harry Nilsson, and originally performed by 'Three Dog Night' - I've been following all your Australian reactions, which I always love, and just started following your sister Kiki

John was born in 1949, this song was in 1968 so he was 19 years old here.. There are older video's of him singing this where he was much better.. But seeing him so young is awesome...
Man i only ever heard old john. And this young john comes round and hits me up with that opening verse of silky butter smooth vocals. No wonder knickers were dropping.
One was written by American Harry Nilsson…. Who wrote songs that The Monkees recorded….. most of John’s early career he covered songs written by other artists….. a beautiful early song is Comic Conversation….. ie. Harry Nilsson is worth a look… regards Craig.
This is the John Farnham from when i was a kid. He was always King of Pop in Australia then. This is a cover of the Three Dog Night song. He also did a cover of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"
Back in the 50’s to early 70s upcoming to be released singles from USA had a different Australian release date , so songs would be in limbo for while . This gave many Australian artists time to listen and record there own version and release it first , until American recording companies realised what was happening in Australia. Australia got some very good recordings out of loophole in the Industry . This was one of them . Originally written and recorded by Harry Nelson but intended for release in Australia by American band 3 Dog Night . Johnny Farnham just got in a record it before that release .
Loving all of your Aussie content mate, especially the John Farnham content. Can I recommend and request you do a reaction to Paul Dempsey? He’s criminally underrated and crazy good, check out his cover of Stop, originally performed by Sam Brown.
This was the beginning of John’s career and at this time, all Australian teenage girls fell in love with him, me included! I still remember a photo of him with a red sports car, I think an MG. Not long after this he met his wife, Jillian, who was a dancer, who performed on stage and television. I remember how heartbroken all we girls were, when they were engaged and then married.
John generally doesn't write songs. This one is a cover - and he sings the hell out of it! It's so interesting to revisit his early work and the way his voice matured over the years.

When he was coming to the end of his 'full time' touring career they put out a 3 disc set best of type and one of the discs is called Rarities I think lots of covers from 60s and 70s
Australian artists were big on covering American songs at this time as international artists didn't come down here so they could use the songs and make them their own in Australia.
@@michaelgibson6204 just confirmed that the pay for play ban was 23 May 1970 - 24 October 1970 . So not much impact on this 1969 release. I remember the three Dog night version being widely played on radio but not as popular as the local version.
Even in this early song producers had worked out he had a big voice and needed a big sound. Compare this to his Melbourne concerts with the MSO, brass and backing vocals, the whole ensemble. That explosive voice invokes a big sound.
One of his earliest that got requested time and time again throughout his career, right up there with "Sadie the cleaning lady", "Two Strong Hearts" and the most fitting one for him "Your the Voice"
How lucky was Australia to have John farnham sing and entertain us for generation after generation.
Still is!
He was from the beginning and a true showman and so professional. He just loves to perform and is a generous performer with others.
He started in 1967 at 17 turning 18. Hes stayed genuine and passionate and of course that voice has been belting for over 60 years now 😂😂😂❤❤❤

One Is The Loneliest Number - best known by Three Dog Night 1968 (written by Harry Nilsson III, who wrote "Everybody's Talkin", and had a hit with Badfinger's "Without You")
Johnny's first hit was "Sadie the cleaning lady" (he still references it today)..
I really enjoy seeing you react to our great Aussie singers :D have been enjoying going through some more of them lately. :)
“You could hear that there was so much growth going to happen” - most insightful comment I’ve heard on UA-cam for a long time - well said my man………👏👏👏👍👍👍
This is the song that first made me realise what an incredible voice he had.
He was still performing this song throughout his career…
I didn’t realise he was so soft on the high notes in those days. Now he can just belt them out!
I think this may be why he got the nickname Whispering Jack. 😀
Definitely with those couple of higher notes on the word 'one' - was waiting for our to be belted for sure
Comic conversations by John is possibly his best early number.
Yes, I agree with you
Love that song
Nice to see you get to some of John's older stuff.👍It is a Harry Nilsson song. The clip is from 1969.
He has a glorious pure tone!
1970 - Now you just have to do Cold Chisel "Cheap Wine" or "Choir Girl" 1980 for a young Jimmy Barnes.
💯💯💯💯💯💯
And Cold Chisel in “Bow River”
I'm starting to suspect that reactors don't read comments from non-paying followers ☹
He is loved in Australia because he Transend's generations . We love him because we do . And Melbourne is his home town . he is a living legend .
Hello from Australia - Thank you for reaction to John's 'One' - You are right, 'One' was written by Harry Nilsson, and originally performed by 'Three Dog Night' - I've been following all your Australian reactions, which I always love, and just started following your sister Kiki
"One" is a song by American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson from his 1968 album Aerial Ballet. It is known for its opening line "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do". Nilsson wrote the song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep, beep, beep, beep..." tone, writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes.
I love this one too. ❤️ you must also check out Renee Geyer a great Australian female vocalist 🙏❤️
Ironic in a way that a young john farnham could not sing as high as he gets to being older singing michael jacksons song
One was written by American Harry Nilsson…. Who wrote songs that The Monkees recorded….. most of John’s early career he covered songs written by other artists….. a beautiful early song is Comic Conversation….. ie. Harry Nilsson is worth a look… regards Craig.
❤️ loved it, sharing memories here thankyou
John was 20 when he released One, which was written and recorded by Harry Nilsson the year before that (1968). John was born 1 July, 1949.
This is the John Farnham from when i was a kid. He was always King of Pop in Australia then. This is a cover of the Three Dog Night song.
He also did a cover of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"
John released this in 1969 -He was known as Johnny Farnham then
If you go back further, you can find him singing ‘Saddie, (the cleaning lady)’… I think he was even younger…
I love the cute little choirboy dance he does in the early days 😆
There's some great clips on UA-cam of Farnham singing with Ray Charles.
He had number 1 singles in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and number 1 albums in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s
And John in LRB Playing to Win is phenomenal!!
Big respect JF❤Get well soon.
Harry Nilson is the composer/singer of One...
Sadie, the cleaning lady was Johnny's first big hit and he never looked back
John generally doesn't write songs. This one is a cover - and he sings the hell out of it! It's so interesting to revisit his early work and the way his voice matured over the years.
I'm 56 and I grew up with Johnny Farnham looking like this haha
John was just 20 yo when he released ‘One’ in 1969 - still a bit baby-faced! He’d been a teen idol for a few years by then.
That’s a song by Chicago. He’s so young that I wouldn’t have recognized him!
I sent you something from Australia today, in the post... Hope you love them.

Recorded: 1967
Three Dog Night originally released this song John Farnham sang with Little River Band unbelievable voice with Freddy Mercury's and Steve Perry awesome voice
Yeah, I never knew that "Turn the Page" was by Bob Segar until I bought a best of album. I thought it was by Jon English...
Although Three Dog Nights version was a cover too, but of the writer Harry Nilssons original less of hit version.
There was also a radio ban on big overseas music labels over fees for playing on the Radio
@@michaelgibson6204 just confirmed that the pay for play ban was 23 May 1970 - 24 October 1970 .
So not much impact on this 1969 release. I remember the three Dog night version being widely played on radio but not as popular as the local version.
@@johnd8892 just expanding the point that more covers were released at the time
Even in this early song producers had worked out he had a big voice and needed a big sound.
