I still think his stuff is very clever. Keep in mind that when he started doing stand up in the early to mid 80's this was a completely unique style. It's been copied many times since, but he was def a pioneer. Kind of a deadpan surrealism

Steven Wright wasn't fringe, he was one of the top American comics for 15+ yrs.
He's selling out theaters across the country as we speak.
"When I was a kid, my mother used to say to me, 'Stephen, go to sleep. I said, 'what do you mean?' She said, 'go all the way to the end of tired and take a right.' So I went all the way to the end of tired and took a left just to see what would happen, and there was my mother standing there saying, 'I thought I told you to go to sleep." I heard that as a teen, and I laughed and laughed...
He's brilliant.
He was huge in the states, and is respected. My favorite of his- "if you put instant coffee in the microwave, do you go back in time?"
"I put instant coffee into a microwave...I almost went back in time."
The powdered water one always got me.
I love the one about putting his car key in his front door and it started up so he took it for a drive
"I like to go skating. On the other side of the ice."
"I bought a map of the United States. It's actual size. [pause] I folded it last summer."
"I went camping with my girlfriend, Rachel, and she got Poison Ivy on her brain. [pause] The only way she could scratch it was by thinking about sandpaper."
To paraphrase, my favorite is "I left my apartment and noticed everything was stolen-and replaced by exact duplicates." Just brilliant!
He's in an episode of Becker and someone says to him "I haven't seen you in a while" and he replies "but you can see me now, right?"
Classic!
I used to wanna do this as a kid. Had my favorite one written down: "Hmm, a burglary at a bakery...now I've seen many cases in my day but this one takes the cake!"
"I was walking down the street with a friend and a guy jumped out of the alley with a gun and said give me all of your money. I said wait and turned to my friend and said, hey here's the hundred bucks that I owe you".
Love this. He was also the legendary guy on the couch in half baked.
Scarface: "Yo, The Guy, did you kill my dog?"
The guy on the couch:
Scarface: "I believe him, yo! I don't know why, but I do".
Only Dave and Neal could write that in a hurry :)

He was the voice of the 70's radio station DJ in "Reservoir Dogs".
Actually he said in an interview than whenever he rubs his forehead covering his eyes he's trying to remember the next joke. I've always admired how one-liners comedians remember their act. Even five minutes means twenty jokes, let alone a whole special. With other comedians it's easier since they have four or five big topics, but with them sometimes they have to do a whole hour and it has to be planned out so they don't repeat jokes, which is harder when there's no throughline.
“I saw a sign that said ‘next rest stop 35 miles.’ I thought wow, that’s pretty big.”
My comedy hero! My favorite: "Everything is within walking distance if you have the time."
"I have the world's largest collection of seashells......I keep it on all the beaches of the world."
He plays the DJ of the radio station the guys play on Resevoir Dogs. Off camera but his voice is very hard to miss!
Steven Wright's delivery is so good the joke almost seems secondary. Love his comedy as well as Mitch Hedberg (RIP Mitch). Those are two comedians where I can watch their material over and over and not get tired of it because their deliveries are so good.
My favorite of his: we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway.
Steven Wright has a brilliant,strange mind . I have loved his comedy for many years .

Even though they are one liners, in his specials the jokes hit harder. He weaves them together in a cool way. Thanks for all the laughs blokes
I've always said he had very dry wit and dry delivery. I loved his stoic facial expressions. I loved Steven Wright as a kid, and still love his humor. Glad to see you watching him.
One of my favorites:
“I have a map of the United States... Actual size. It says, 'Scale: 1 mile = 1 mile.' I spent last summer folding it. I hardly ever unroll it. People ask me where I live, and I say, 'E6.”
He had a great joke that went, “I moved into this new place that has this light switch that isn’t connected to anything. So every now and then when I’d walk by I’d flick it on and off, on and off for no reason. Four month later I got a letter from India that said, Cut it out”.
People do not realize how clever you have to be to come up with this stuff. Talk about outside the box thinking!
The key is that he pulls you into his world. Once you are in that bizarre realm inside his head, he just takes you on a ride. Like he said, the jokes are kind of cheesy taken one at a time, but they build up on you as you get further and further into his head until finally you just drop your own reality and join his. True genius.
Rodney Dangerfield was the king of one liners
Same genre as Mitch Hedberg. Writing jokes isn't a problem for guys like that. It's how they think. It's a rare talent.
A Boston legend
My favorite Stephen Wright line is about the fishing. “A fine line stands between ...). I’ve repeated THAT joke for years (to my kids) and they’ve never laughed. I still think it’s funny.
The Jewish cowboy joke was my all-time favorite… priceless!

The thing about Steven Weight he's still a comedian today 2024. He has lasted 4 decades.
Also, as well as his comedy work, a lot of people seem to forget - or just not realise - that Steven was the voice of K Billy, the radio DJ heard throughout Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs'.
"As K Billy's Super Sounds of the 70's Weekend just keeps on... truckin'."

I loved him as The Guy On The Couch on Chappelle’s “Half Baked,” brilliant.
MAX MILLER, the English comedian was banned from the BBC for this joke:
I was walking along this narrow mountain pass - so narrow that nobody else could pass you, when I saw a beautiful blonde walking towards me. A beautiful blonde with not a stitch on, yes, not a stitch on, lady. Cor blimey, I didn't know whether to block her passage or toss myself off.
Steven Wright's jokes are way too smart to ever be considered "cheesy." Glad Daz, pointed that out. As for his delivery, I think Anthony Jeselnik is very influenced by Wright, in both his pacing and the monotone.
Not just think, Jeselnik constantly mentions him as his main influence.
I think that this type of comedy would be difficult to sustain. He's a comedian, but he isn't a stand-up comedian. Instead of picking a single topic and running with it, he delivers punchline after punchline. Mitch Hedburg did this, too. I miss Mitch. He reminded me so much of the people I hung out with just out of high school.
My house has a circular driveway, I can't get out. Someone broke into my house recently. They stole everything and replaced it with exact replicas.
Don't forget Rodney Dangerfield was a great one liner
he bought a house on the highway, he has to leave his driveway doing 80mph
He does appear to be a king of 'Groaners'. Of course he does seem to tell them just for the pun of it... :)
The most famous one-liner came from Henny Youngman, who said, "Take my wife [as in consider my wife]......Please."
Steven Wright is a legend. Anthony Jeselnik is the modern comic who most reminds me of him.
If you have seen Reservoir Dogs, he's the DJ on 'Super Sounds of the '70's.'

And all of those comedians y’all named off all took cues from Steven, most consider him The OG when it comes to this style of comedy.

This video doesn't do him proper justice. It is far too short. He is so very funny when you watch the full show. He has gems like "Why do you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?"

The one-liner is rare but not a unique style. Rodney Dangerfield was a master at it, as was the great Henny Youngman before him. What makes Steven and Mitch Hedberg so different is that the jokes are super smart, and sometimes you need to think for a few seconds before you get it.

Steven Wright is still loved here. It’s not so much that he does one-liners as it is he’s genuine. It’s the gestalt of the jokes, the delivery, and the whole demeanor. No one else could do that. In the same vein as Gilbert Gottfried.
Demitri Martin is the youngest comic I can think of that’s very clearly similar, and he isn’t young anymore. lol
