- A super cute meowtroidvania game released on Switch and PC last week, and I've been looking forward to it for ages because it looks and feels awesome to play.
I gush over its animation in this episode.

"Limitation breeds creativity" I can't remember the artist that said that, but time and time again, I see it to be true. The excess of resources can muddy up the canvas, so to speak; but by limiting oneself to a few, essential elements, the artist( or game devs/animators in this case) are able to be more freely creative. It's a lovely paradox~!
It's a pretty well established idea.
Constraints breed innovation.
If a game gave u God powers, nothing would be difficult and you would do it in the easiest way possible. Quite dull.
But having limited abilities is what makes a game fun. Making most of what u have to solve problems.
It's like being able to run in a car park or an alley way. Too much scope.
My flatmate and I often get into fights because he doesn't play indie games because "they don't look that good". And I'm always speechless because all I see in games like "Gato Roboto" is the love the devs have for their game.
When it comes to small titles with not more than a few devs, you know that every bit of animation they put in there is important to these people. Every twitch, wiggle and fidget had to be high on the priority list if it made it into the game. Minimalistic games have a much more clear and focused vision. And to me that makes indie games like this a lot prettier than big budget titles.
I definitely agree, I think indie games is where there's more innovation and risk, though I understand why big companies don't want to take the risk.
To be honest, the is no joke one of the greatest games I've ever enjoyed. It's fun, not too challenging, and wonderful to look at and engage with. I couldn't put it down!
A rare feeling to have with games these days.
I really liked this game. Not only from the gameplay aspect, but the artstyle, and music, animation and sound design
It's great isn't it
Man, I love this game's art style. So different.
I am a fan of... All of that! So, yes! I will get this game immediately!
FANTASTIC! BEST $8 I've spent in a game. It was just beautiful how they conveyed so much with just two colors! I felt the heat in the furnace area. Everything so very well conveyed 😱 So good! Totally recommend.
I bought this game on a whim during the Steam Summer sale. Best $3 I've spent in a long while.
"ok Im done" XD
This game would probably be amazing on Gameboy
Thank you for having a video on this game, it needs more exposure badly.
It's bloody wonderful isn't it
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy one of my favorite games I've recently played
You killed them, didn't you? Before they even had the chance to grow a mustache!
*hears what kind of fans there are* You forgot one most important factor on another reason to get the game..."If you're a cat lover, then get this game". But yeah, the game is cute
This video was awsome. You explained so much in such little time
Plus...I like Meow-troidvania
If you haven't played it, I thoroughly recommend it!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I definitely will consider it
@@chickensandwich9977 Dude, if you haven't yet, play it, awesome game
@@sydney_pepper i definitely will!!
I honestly always loved to think that more than the suit monitoring Kiki's status, its Gary's interface monitoring her every move, i'd like to think the technology the ship has has been damaged and thats why the game needs to display a simple 2 color aproximate display, all the informantion goes away once kiki leaves the suit, making it apparent that gary no longer is having full track on her, its a little bit over the top but i think its a nice connection between the two, and it gives the artstyle a more although dreadful, a logical justification, maybe we are sending a cat in a soldier's mission and all we have is this scrappy monitor displaying 2 bit colored video, its fun.
Godammit Dan, You drive me to add these games to my wishlist.
this game has such an authentic industrial feel to it, almost like the cult classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man film
I got a pro controller for the Switch and I decided to try it with this game three years after buying it, I love this extremely little but polished kind of indie games, it really made a lot better this terrible christmas for me
I actually got this game on sale on Nintendo Switch a couple of months ago.
First heard of Gato Roboto from its Fall Guys collaboration.
Domo Arigato, Gato Roboto
Hadn't heard of this game! Totally going to pick it up :D
GAH-to. GAH-to ro-BAH-to. You're sacrificing the rhyme.
Sorry, I'm not Spanish so didn't see it as pronounced differently 🤪
To be fair "roboto" isn't spelt with an A, but I'm glad it's not just me 😄
That's literally not how you pronounce it at all lmao.
How is it pronounced then?
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy it's not spanish... fuck... even you are like this?
This game's artstyle is quite great! Funny enough, I was sorta reminded of the first Doom game when you mentioned the cat's mugshots. Great video!
Ahh yes of course, Doom guy does little expressions doesn't he? Good shout
Nice video, I enjoyed it as always. Animation is super hard for me but I'm always inspired to try out things I learn from these videos. You've got a real knack for figuring out exactly what it is that makes something look good :
*Mega Man's Cat is on the loose...*
Surely Samus's cat?
I love this sort of design, and games like this are the bar I hope I can meet as an artist one day. I've actually been drawing a series of sprites the last few days using a very limited fixed palette and seeing what characters I can get looking good. 14 colors, while a lot compared to the game shown here, still requires a lot of creative use especially when you're not allowed to change them. The limitations ultimately end up feeling paradoxically liberating and versatile once you're comfortable within them.
Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll do great!
Thank you! I'm trying my best. :)
All your videos (about game animation) has helped me a lot when making games (as a hobby). Love your content, allways inspires me to try new stuff :)
Hey, thanks so much! I'm glad they help and entertain!
A little-known fact about Gato:
He has metal joints, and defeating him will win you 15 silver points.
🤔
Mmm I nice good Dan Root video. I remember seeing this game long ago and Im super glad it came out. It looks super fun and something I'd love. Thanks for the animation talk Dan~
Thanks for the kind words Gero!
Yeah, I've been following it for so long, I'm so happy it's out.
What a coincidence I just beat this game the night before you released this video. Great video and what a wonderful little game.
It's so damn cute isn't it
Wow Dan you're moving up in the world. You managed to make this video in three weeks instead of four, I'm proud of you buddy.
Haha! I actually managed to make it in five days, I started a week ago!
Thank you so much for making this wonderful series
Thank _you_
I called it over on twitter! (But great job as usual, love your stuff)
Ha, yes I think I remember! Good shout 😎
The sound design reminds me a lot of Chibi Robo.
I sense an inspiration.
Ooh nice, I'll have to check it out!
There's a little Blaster Master in there too. Plz make a second "Dan Root" channel for musings and such.
Ha, I'd love to but I honestly don't have the time to work on anything else. I've got a family, freelance animation career and a small indie game hobby on the side too, ain't no way I've got time for a fifth thing I'm afraid 😅
Mate your vids make me so happy
Ahw, thank you, I'm glad!
The stubby bottom half of the Mack made me think that it was tank at first which instantly made me think of blaster master. Blaster master with a cat I'm sold.
The animation style reminded me of a GBA game, Drill Dozer. Also with very nice motions
Yeah, the sound and game intertwine nice with each other, creating this real-time live game experience.
Thanks for another great video!
Thanks man, yeah it just works so well together!
Ok, how did I not know about this game? You sold me on it, Dan. On the list it goes!
Weyyy, awesome
Looks like a fun game, I might have to check it out
You definitely should!
I love the developer of these games. Loved playing downwell and I already know I’m gonna love playing this game.
Yeah Devolver Digital have got a good thing going!
Thanks for making me aware of this game. Literally picked it up on my switch soon after I watched you video.
Nice! Let me know what you think!
EXCELLENT GAME.
EXCELLENT ANALYSIS.
ENJOY YOUR VIDS.
CHEERS!
Imagine Metroid II with these kinds of animations. Oof
Oh man, don't.
Is that a good oof or a bad oof lol
Dude i just went through your sub list to look for more channels on animation and we share so many subscriptions. Mainly ones about videogames an music, but it was cool to see Paymoneywubby on there too xD
Ha, that's cool! Yeah I like that guy. I kinda wanna cut down my sub, cos I find the more I subscribe to, the less I get to see, as I just don't have the time to watch lots of content. Stop making good channels, everyone! 🤣
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I kinda use my subscriptions like a curated recommended feed. Plus there's a chrome extension that allows you to filter your subscriptions by custom categories. It's honestly really useful for when you have too many subscriptions haha
Never heard of the game, but it looks cool! Great video and great study, Dan! =)
Thanks Bloxed!
Video Game Animation Study no problem! =)
Bought this game on your suggestion and beat it in one sitting. It's incredible. I highly encourage anyone interested in this game to go buy it!
Awesome, well done!
it's so cutee. nice video!!
This video was amazing! I feel revitalized.
Thank you!😊
If I may so humbly ask
Could you make a video on the tone and animation of hyper light Drifter 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Hmm, maybe. I've got a list of stuff is like to get through, and I'd need to think of an angle for it.
Hey dude great video.
Have you heard of environmental station alpha? It does a good job of building atmosphere considering how few pixels there are
I'd love a take of Enviromental Station alpha, that's such a great game.
It does sound familiar, actually! I think I know what you mean.
Thanks, Dan! I got myself a new game!
Do *Lemmings*!!
(and also consider "Walker" from the Amiga, which also has some GREAT pixel art)
I love this game but i still can't beat that darn lava mouse.
Yeah it's pretty tough!
Oh man I really would like to watch the video but I might play the game sometime and don't want to spoil it. Anyway here's my like as always!
Thanks a lot! You'll love it!
I love metroidvania games is such a beautiful genre
The only reason I didn't buy it yet is because of it's short length, but maybe I'll still get it someday.
I'd say it's worth the £6
I still feel like you should analyse the animation, and make something at the end of the video based on what is learnt.
Like you did in the explosions video.
It'd be fun to do that but it'd take far too long to make each video.
Love this game
Added to wishlist.
Great video! Love to see indie game appreciation!! ❤️ Keep it up! #indiesrule
Indies pave the way for innovation these days, I find. Less risk, more reward!
Video Game Animation Study yes, I would completely agree!! You can learn so much just by playing these games, as innovation is key to succeeding as an indie! I am currently working on a fighting game about blocking, which has had me learn so much along the journey and I constantly feel improvement every session of game development 🙂
Gosh I love video game animation
YES!
The cat’s name is Kiki but where’s the co op mode with Jiji
Interesting enough, after watching a couple of these videos, about a month ago. I did some 2d animation for a isometric platformer, man is it a pain. But i have developed some tricks to get around the sets of tedious tasks, mainly alot of motion blur, to convey the speed of which they swing their arms/turn
Nice, sounds like you're learning your own tips and tricks!
Sinistar that would be an interesting video idea.
Looking from QBERT to Baldur’s Gate to Supergiant games like Bastion and Transistor, the animation is so similar, yet so different from games like Link to the Past or other top-down games.
Agree, isometric animation in my opinion has always been interesting since there's so many different ways of animating the same thing.
Nice
Dan could you please make a comment analisys on Hyper light drifter animation??
I've had a few requests for that, though I don't really know what I'd say or which angle to tackle it.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy i guess your video about the importance of key frames kinda sums it up. But i like the way it conveys personality and meaning through animation and imagery.
Love you bye...

The design looks really good, but I realized: The lack of color makes it much harder to understand, visually. Plus, it reduces the differentiation between levels.
On the contrary, I think it does very good things in differentiating between areas, such as having solid lines for the water area, crumbly rock structures for the intro, mechanical bits for the fiery area, I think it enhances the design with the limitations in place.
Can you do an episode on Moonlighter? I want to play this game in a genre I don't like simply because of the animations.
Ooh I've not heard of it, I'll look into it
Battle cats got a sequel?
When I beat the game I’ll be back
Gato Roboto for "gameCat Color" when ? ;)
Could you do an episode on water effects in games some time?
Definitely!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Thank you.
Is it just me, or does the sound in the game sound like you're hearing it through a helmet?
Possibly, it does sound like all the bass has been removed
What's the song that starts at 00:52 from? I recognize it from somewhere, but my brain is drawing a massive blank on where and it's bugging the crap out of me.
That's actually just a piece of music UA-cam has for use in videos, I can't remember its name right now.
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy That's probably where else I've heard it then. I was sitting here going through all the game soundtracks I have in my head trying to figure out which one it was from, and this would explain why I wasn't coming up with anything. :P
This is a good video but...Please tell me you drew the thumbnail
I think so. I don't remember the original artwork having any shading
I redrew original artwork from their website as it was too small to use at high quality. And added shading, like you said.
It’s Gawto Roboto not Gaato
it’s supposed to rhyme, gato is spanish for cat and should be pronounced like the spanish word (because it’s supposed to rhyme with roboto)
Esse jogo é muito bom!
ok
Same bro...😔
the game is not a vania at all. its a straight up Metroid. this is a common mistake most people make.
Well, I'm no fan of the term "metroidvania", but that is technically what this game falls under, and it's not necessarily a mistake.
Yeah it's kinda more like that, isn't it
I kinda skipped it because of it looked like a cheap steam game but you’ve changed my mind.
Great video as always z
Ah man, it just speaks to me, there's something very satisfying about it. I'm glad you're giving it a go
How much does it cost?
It's like £7
Video Game Animation Study Damn that’s generous
420 likes right now
nice
This is a Brazilian game?
Not as far as I know...?
marcos guilherme maybe you’re thinking of Dandara, which IS a Brazilian Metroidvania game that was released not too long ago...?
That’s the one where you jump from piles of salt in an anti gravity world. I haven’t played it both bc I’m broke and also because watching a play through made me super dizzy
I thought of the word "Gato" that means cat in English
Would be nicer if graphics had color tho imo
The point is to mimic older consoles that had colour limitiations.
Besides, I say in the video that they manage to convey different environments with literally two colours.
Also also, there are different colour palettes you can find in the game.
There are cartridges that you can collect while you are progressing the game. Those include a lot of interesting colours and themes you can use.
@@jonipotato9763 like urine and wine
Tbh I would really prefer the game colored.
It's the main thing holding me back from bying it... IMO it doesn't look good. And IMO Megaman looks good, so...
Hmm. There are colour palette to unlock throughout the game, though it's all monochromatic.
I think the game would lose its charm of it had colour
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy
Well I guss it's GG then
whats so special about this games animation you have to make an entire video dedicated to it
I like it.
It's a art in itself
shut up
Everytime you say “gat-o” and not “gah-to” it hurts me in indescribable ways.
Welp, sorry it offended you. It's a cat in a suit, "gat-oh" sounded more appropriate to say.
Fun fact: Gato is cat in portuguese
NOT SPANISH, VIDEO GAME ANIMATION STUDY I'M LOOKING AT YOU!
Did I say it was Spanish?
Found where I said it was Spanish.
Don't be rude, please.
It's Spanish in general, dude
