I quote an extract from the book :SCHUBERT,by PEGGY WOODFORD,,:::lhave known four musicians, all greatly experienced in this class of music,&none in the least inclined by disposition to sentimentality, who with strange unanimity expressed the feeling that, were they fated in their last hours to listen to some LOVELY STRAIN,this would be the music of their election ( WW Cobbett 'Cyclopedic Survey of Chamber Music). The"Lovely Strain is the Adagio of Schuberts C major String Quintet. This movement, one of the miracles of music, moves the listener to the depths of the heart."l hold the very look on paper of this Adagio to be beautiful, wrote Richard Capell. This intensely personal work is the creative & spiritual SUMMA of Schuberts life.!! "All he has known during his short, full existence, all the gaiety, the pain, the joy ,the anguish, the exalted spiritual understanding, the black melancholy, the innocence, the experience---all thes fill this Quintet. In it there is music of passionate intensity,of romantic sadness,of ominous turbulence,of joy&feverish gaiety. . Wish all listeners of this Quintet a good understanding of this RAGA composed by SCHUBERT ! !

Believe it or not, this is the first time I've heard this in its entirety. The first thing that strikes you is it's grand scale. Unusual for a chamber piece. Schubert takes us through a 55 minute journey of transcendental meditation. A resounding genius. Equal to Beethoven, but more chilled. This is astonishing music that you don't just listen to, but you actually become part off... thanks for the upload..

many thanks for your insight. Schubert died aged 31, Beethoven at 57...had he lived longer... Beethoven's music is more structured while Schubert's is freer and more spontaneous, both excelled in lyricism , Schubert's more so, I think....it took so many years later for Dvorak to bear that torch. B. scoffed at Fate, S accepted and was not bitter though he suffered from poverty and ill health. Schubert is the John Keats of music, Beethoven of Nietzsche's. Kindly advise Mr Sneaky----I never studied music though I play violin in charities--light pieces only. Best wishes from Melb

Felhasználva a halhatatlan dallamkincsét. Szegényt még holtában is kihasználták a kufárok!

In my ranking it is Mozart, Haydn, with Beethoven and Schubert a tie for third. Schubert was incredibly prolific in his short life....I consider him the Mozart of the Romantic era....beautiful video visuals, by the way!

bwahahaha. JSB takes first second and third spot then fourth, fifth and so on... 99th is beetoven on equal par with shubert, then hyden (refined mozart with much more nu·anceand complexity) then maybe mozart and thats a huge maybe. fak i hate how people that think Mozart is the best. JSB is, and i cant say this any more strongly, objectively the best musician ever. its like comparing a physics professor to einstien.

Without trying to dimish it's qualitiy and magnitude it's definitely not comparable to Beethoven's late chamber music. A lot of this quintet's popularity is based on it's easy listening, being "melody" based like so much of his work. Betthoven's late quartet's are so deep and complicated that they take a lot of concentration. Schubert himself thought Beethoven's Op 131was incomparable, and asked for it to be played for him as he lay dying, saying "after this there is nothing left to write".

I’d agree, up to a point, but I don’t like the idea of comparing works of art. Late Beethoven is magnificent, Agreed, but this is monumental in its own right. I can listen to this from start to finish and feel wrung out - and the melodies ain’t bad. I sometimes come to the end of this and feel there is simply nothing else to say. In other moods, on other days, the Grosse Fuge is what I need to hear. On other days, Max Bruch or JSB. It’s not a competition; it’s all wonderful, and any of it would serve to prove that humanity had some redeeming features. This work is in my top ten, and I try not to rank anything beyond that. To be honest, this calms me, and late Beethoven shreds my psyche, but each day is different. Hell, any of this is better than the tripe that passes for music these days!

@@richardbrookman6415 Ah, the Grosse Fugue, recond by many to be Beethoven's greatest work. Certainly his most complicated. For me Op 127 is my favourite. Otherwise, Mozart's celebrated ten quartets (especially The Hoffmeister), and the four late great quintets I think all all trump the Schubert. I do enjoy Schubert;s chamber music very much, (except the ghastly overplayed Trout piano quintet) but after Beethoven it's easy listening for me.

@@billguyan9626 Ah, Bill, I think we are splitting hairs here. Isn’t it all just bloody wonderful? I mean, soul-feeding, life-enhancing, mind-expanding wonderful? I couldn’t live without any of it. And I’m sure you couldn’t either. In my retirement, and in my isolation due to Covid, it is my lifeline. And I bet Schubert never thought he would be a 21C man’s lifeline. Bach for the architecture, Beethoven for the soul, and Schubert for the tunes. Win-win.

@@richardbrookman6415 I have an orchestra colleague who raves about the Schubert quintet as the best piece of chamber music ever. Maybe that's why I'm so defensive about this issue. But he's a timpanist so he knows nothing! I can't believe that anyone familiar with Beethoven's late quartets can put the Schubert above them. Another thing about this quintet is its scoring for two 'cellos, following Boccherini rather than Mozart's with double violas). I dislike the two 'cello arrangement, I don't think adding a 'cello to a string quartet does anything for the ballance, and this seems especially evident to me in the quintet's rather (to me) muddy last movement.
Incidentally I'm just as much into medieval music... if you want to try something incredible listen to Ecclesiae Militantis by Dufay (Pomerium's rendition is by far the best on youtube - there's a version with the score here: ua-cam.com/video/5svudZkWUaE/v-deo.html ) It's a vocal quartet with a duet intro .

@@billguyan9626 I’m not even a tympanist, so what do I know? I just love good music, and for me the Quintet is good music. I’m not really interested in whether Beethoven or Bach are better. On another day I will prefer Beethoven, or Bruch, or Couperin. Another day Schubert, or Albeniz. It’s all good. For what it’s worth, I like the two cellos. I think it gives a depth of sound which adds immensely to the power of the piece. But we’re not going to agree, and that’s fine. We’re music lovers, and that makes us princes among men. :)
