    An introduction to Prussian absolutism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. After the Thirty Years' War, Frederick William, the Great Elector, began to build an absolutist state in Prussia-Brandenburg. He and his grandson, Frederick William I (the "Soldier King"), built Prussia into a great power by putting together the most elite military force in early modern Europe. Using a religious policy of Protestant toleration, enlisting the Junkers (nobles) as a service nobility, taxing by decree, and establishing the first system of compulsory public education, "the Fredericks" built a successful absolutist state.
    This e-lecture is suitable for AP European History and Western Civilization students, as well as lifelong learners seeking to learn European history for their own viewing pleasure!

      It wasn't Voltaire who said that

    • @Fahad0947
      @Fahad0947 3 роки тому

      @@Bb-pw1zi it's often falsely attributed to Voltaire, who wrote no such thing. In academia, it's attributed to Count Mirabeau; upon further examination of his works, it was also determined that he also wrote no such thing. It was either just made up by contemporary historians or was written by one of the officers of the count.

    Nice. You know the real tradgedy is that in German history class I didn't hear let alone learn half of the things you talk about. It was very WW2-centric which is important of course, but it definitely came at the cost of cutting other content. I started reading "German Genius" by an Englishman called Peter Watson and he made the point that people don't know anything about Germany beyond WW2 and sadly the same is often true of Germans themselves. By the way I find the Bourne Identity poster in the background hilarious, you you're like a Bourne Identity-lookalike history buff.

    Frederick was one of the greatest leaders of all time, his nickname suits him. Judging from the perspective of that time instead of the hippy viewpoints of today, the U.S. needs someone with the outlook of him. The guy even wore a regular uniform instead of trying to make himself above the regular soldiers. God Bless him

    • @tomrichey
      @tomrichey  9 років тому +8

      Sounds a bit like General Pershing who insisted on being buried in a soldier's grave. Comparing his burial site with Grant's Tomb is an eye opener - really made me respect the guy a lot! There aren't many true soldiers left in the world.

    • @dquaid666
      @dquaid666 9 років тому

      Many other leaders in Preussen previous to Frederick Der Grosse would probably fit in any country with the narrow outlook of the time, however, he was so well rounded with his respect for the arts, the people, soldiers, and well being of his country, I just think the guy really had a good outlook on leadership and is greatly overlooked. He had issues in his personal life, but who doesn't. Thanks for giving mention to him, and what I believe could have been a staple in the progression of civilization had it not been tarnished by the world wars. Frederick should be held as the greatest "German" leader of all time. Tolerance with dedication.

      Best anglicized pronunciation I can come up with is:
      Dee-you Don-eh? or Dee-erh Don Eh? Now take the "r" out of the "erh"! Keep the Dee short.

    *cough* Prussian Spacemarines *cough*
    If you don't get it it's a joke about Europa Universalis 4, a historical grand strategy game, where Prussia/Brandenburg is the by far most powerful nation in the world.

    • @martinledermann1862
      @martinledermann1862 8 років тому +12

      It is only when led by a human player who knows how to maximize their militaristic ideas. When led by the AI, Brandenburg usually doesn't even manage to form Prussia. Besides, the most powerful nation in EU4's world is by far France. They start strong and they usually stay strong throughout all of the timeline, regardless of whether they're led by an HP or the AI.

    • @cainlolsson97
      @cainlolsson97 8 років тому +2

      I agree with Smeper. Someone who has always blobed and is still blobbing is the Ottoman Empire. And I think they will blob even more by the looks of it. The next expansion gives them there own goverment giving them there own bonuses

      Semper Invicta
      Really? I haven't noticed any changes to France, in my games it's usually Castille that gets wrecked early on. Last time I played as Brandenburg, France had 3/4 of Britain, all or Ireland, and half of Spain. Mind you that it was 1.16 version though but I haven't heard of PDX making any changes to France between 1.16 and 1.17.

    • @cainlolsson97
      @cainlolsson97 8 років тому

      France is really strong still, but usually Castile allies Burgundy, and sometimes Austria. By that point France is f***ed

    • @martinledermann1862
      @martinledermann1862 8 років тому

      Semper Invicta
      Yeah, sure, but that's what I mean, every time we play the borders develop differently. A lot depends on which country the human player picks and how the net of alliances is set at the start of the campaign. So it's hard to talk about any universal generalizations with regards to the EU4 based solely on our personal experiences. :)

    Frederich Wilhelm, der Gross Kurfurst von Brandenburg(the Great Elector of Brandenburg), needs more time because he was the one that established an independent state base(domestic and military nucleus) from which all other Prussian monarchs could use and grow Prussia.
    Also Junkers is pronounced as "Yuung-kaers".

    "...or even Spain", really? Spain was THE superpower for more or less two centuries and then replaced naturally by France, the UK was certainly important but never rich enough to compete, the Seven Years War made her gained momentum over France, but naval superiority was only reached AFTER Trafalgar, where the best of the Franco-Spanish fleet was lost, hence the Peninsula incapacity to remain in control of what were the richiest colonies(south-america) and the british direct involvement in the Wars of Independence

    Below is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Anything comparable would simply not have been possible for most people 20 years ago, and probably not even 10 years ago. Kudos to the content providers!

    No worry... Its your good intentions that count. Thanks! I think my bad French and German are kind of recurring jokes on my channel. I had a professor in college who would make a point to pronounce every name in his lectures exactly like it was spelled. He'd pronounce the "s" at the end of Louis! lol I never understood until I started teaching - he just found a consistent way to deal with the ever-present problem of foreign names!

    Prussia’s military greatness just makes Napoleon’s swift and decisive defeat of Prussia in 1806 all that more impressive. Napoleon simply decimated Prussia. Yet it was his admiration of Frederick II that likely spared Prussia from being erased from the map. The second time, funnily enough, that a foreign leader’s admiration of Frederick the Great saved Prussia from total annihilation.

    This confederation was a reflection of the old endo Asian group that came last to Europe, he's with a Caucasians driven out of Asia that had to go to Europe, instead of coming peacefully they tried conquering it like they did in the animal kingdom. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for us the old ancient Kingdom of Sweden the Federation in the old Swiss Alps and the connection to Africa which together represents the West as always known that this was an invasion thousands and thousands of years ago, that these would be the folk that would try to drive a wedge and divide and then Proclaim being natives when they never were. Neanderthals I think went East and met them, then they went West with being driven. But they are not family. The ones that helped build the west from that area come from the sub Indian continent, where redheads remind us of pigtails. I Yammer

    That's very interesting what Frederick William I said. He was the father to Frederick the great right? Because Frederick the great was beyond a doubt gay. Like I mean his father caught him and his lover Hans Hermann Von Katte and imprisons them. He made Frederick watch as he chopped off his head. You'd think he'd be a little bit more sympathetic if he was homosexual himself. I guess maybe he was just really really repressed and when he saw his son doing what he had been afraid to his whole life, he went doubly beserk.
    It's when I look at LGBT rights that I'm most grateful to live in this century.

    I used to be a huge admirer of German militarism, until I realized, that except for being known for teaching others and no one knowing who taught Germany, it's like the analogy of a glacier, just scratched the surface.
    Germany wasn't even Germany - getting hyped up on mushrooms and using tools As Weapons when the Romans were coming at them in Legion.
    Also in the famous painting of putting the Romans under the Yoke, that Hitler idolized, then never showed the other side which was when the Romans were victorious, they offered the man's hand of peace to the dog and if the dog took it, they would think about it, they being the Romans. They also recognize that this was an Indo Asian culture that had migrated West as an invasion originally. Mimics of the original Greco culture and the entire time the Romans knew it because they had been to Greece and Egypt. Hence, law. Thanks Rome.
    Basically this is the original culture roof mimics. I'm very harsh on this "culture", who are not LA Tíene or Halstadt, nor Teuton....
    Scary, the ones that mimic and pretend to be and don't even know it. Nordic myth warns of people like this, about people that stole Shields and kidnapped maidens, of dark Lords in the forest and crested smaller men of large stature having to bring down larger schurke.
    I've become a huge admirer of the German people and the classical achievements
