Mr. Richey contrasts absolutism and constitutionalism as forms of government while discussing the development of English constitutionalism in the Late Middle Ages, which started with King John signing the Magna Carta. This is the first in a series of lectures on the development of English constitutionalism for AP European History students.
Not all heroes wear capes, this one wears a suit and tea and sips tea. Thank you so much Tom for all that you do!
I thought that was Crown. lol
You're the reason I am passing AP Euro....no lie
TOM RICHEY YOU SAVAGE SAVING MY GRADE ONCE AGAIN YOUR A LEGEND BRO
Lol so true
As a history teacher of absolutely brilliant kids, we love your videos. My seventh graders are studying Hobbes, Locke, and their influence on Revolutionary thought, giving us a philosophical background to the primary movers and shakers of the French and American Revolutions. Your videos have been great supplements, but we had to mention, Judy is George's daughter. Jane's the wife! :) "Meet George Jetson. His boy Elroy. Daughter Judy. Jane, his wife." (The song is horribly full of sentence fragments, I know.) Anyway, love your work, keep it up!
I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT TAKING NUMEROUS HISTORY COURSES AND I AM INSPIRED BY YOU!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOU DETAILED AND YET ENTERTAINING INFORMATION.
At 8:33, thanks for not going political or taking sides. It makes me happy there are people that can talk about things and see all sides, not just the side they were raised on.
YOU ARE WONDERFUL. Thank you so so much for spending time to make this.
Fellow history teacher from up North. You have done a fantastic job!
Magna carta? More like magna farta... - Oliver Cromwell.
+Korona LOL
Ha
Could you please make one on the english civil war?
I have the absolutism test tomorrow, and I may or may not be cramming... I'm not a fan of the textbook in general, so I'm always trying to find good youtube videos that'll help. And this one *definitely* did!
Thanks, Livi! And thanks for subscribing to my channel! It looks like your teacher is ahead of me (I'm currently finishing up the Wars of Religion), but I'll be posting a lot more videos this year that will be helpful as you start reviewing for the exam.
I used this to listen over for my Midterm for AP Euro class. This really helped me out getting a better understanding of the material. Thank you for the help.
I wish I would of found your videos and watched them at the beginning of the year! I wish my teacher taught like you do, you make it easier to understand.
This is incredibly helpful in my preparation for a debate on absolutism vs constitutional monarchies. Great video! Thank you :)
Jennifer Garza I hope the debate went well. Glad I could help you prepare!
This really helped me separate absolutism and constitutionalism. Helped me to be able to remember points for each side so I could remember which one is which. -Bland
I'm a history teacher, and I want to tell you that you have a great series of videos. However, please note that the Jetsons were originally broadcast, and had their greatest impact, in the 1960's. know because I watched them as a child. This is vital information, should a Jetsons-related question appear on a future AP exam.
Mr. Richey,
Love your channel! Was hoping you could clarify something for me... I was researching absolutism recently and several times I came across reference to the key attributes of an absolute monarch: political sovereignty, divine right, and absence of checks and balances. I need clarification on the difference between sovereignty and absence of checks and balances. By my thinking, if one has ultimate control, it would follow that there are no checks on your powers, at least none that you actually have to listen to. So my question is: what differentiates these two attributes? Would you use a different sent of attributes? I studied your chart in the video... and it seems to fit with those attributes but is broken down a bit more.
I'll see if I can't get another segment posted tomorrow evening. I'd like to get through the English Civil War, at least, but my slides need some work before I can record.
I'll add it to my list! I'm currently working on a new video on the Counter-Reformation and the Council of Trent. I may be able to put together one on the Thirty Years' War before it's all said and done. When's your test?
I've watched all of your videos at least 4 times, thanks for helping me pass AP Euro!
Katy Clare YOU'RE AWESOME!!! Glad my videos are helping you!
Thank you very much for explaining the 2 different government... Your videos are excellent with the humor!!! Thank you again Tom.
You are welcome
In my AP class we are learning exactly this for Unit III. I decided to get a head start and this is VERY helpful! Thank you !!
Peyton Olson AWESOME! Glad I can help and I hope that you'll be watching these videos throughout the year.
i'm not sure if someone already made this comment but that screenshot of Jetsons isn't really from the intro of the Jetsons, just the 'Family Guy' spoofed version of the Jetsons intro. :)
Loved the comparison between Absolutism and Absolut Vodka, super helpful memory device!
Where is your video on Stuart absolutism. Is it still up?
Can you please explain the concept of these philosophes
1. DeMontesquioue
2.voltaire
3.Rousseau
I have a big exam coming
Where did the Stuart powerpoint go? Does it exist somewhere?
duskboyX Did I advertise it in this video? I had one up at one point, but it was a bit dated. I've posted the first part on James I, Charles I, and the English Civil War on the PowerPoint page of my website: www.tomrichey.net/powerpoints
YES! Definitely watch many times all the way through, like, and share!
Tom where is the Stuart and english civil wars video???
Thanks for posting! Refreshed my memory for the test.
The Jetsons is from the late 1960s. By the 80s, it was already woefully dated.
By the 80's the era of the ''independent woman''was in full effect lol
This was very helpful, thank you for posting it!
No problem
My exam prep paper states: Why did absolutism triumph in France but not in England?
My question is: Is this because England had protections for the people enforced by parliament and France did not?
where's the stuart video?
Can you explain the relationship between Charles I and Oliver Cromwell
thank you so much!!! your videos help me so much for my AP Euro class!!!
can you do something on the english civil war??
No he cannot
one dislike. WHO DONE IT.
+André Oaklin idk but im the second
Hello tom richey, my ap euro tacher loves your powerpoints (you may know him, his name is mr. towmey ) and videos, but what we've noticed is that there isnt a video for the english restoration, but you do have a powerpoint for it. are you ever going to do a video on it or not? i would love to see a video on it because me and a friend are going to present the english resoration to the class, and im sure mr. towmey and other teachers would would appreciate another "richey review" to end class. awesome videos, by the way, i learn a lot from your videos and powerpoints!
+Kenneth Fleming let me rephrase that, there isnt an actual review of the restoration, but you do hav the charles II rap
These videos definitely help! Thanks!
It's a wonderful video. Thank you.
Can u make one more video on the process by which the landed gentry and nobles were elected in the parliament?
If u make, it would help me in my topic of English revolution. Thank you
Could you do an episode on Sweden as a great power?
Thanks a lot Tom!!! :)
And thank you for supporting my work with a comment! :D
With any luck, you'll take the class next year!
Can you do alternate history
Could you make some videos on Asian history please?
Thought about you today when my trip meter in the car read 666.6 miles. They don't call me "El Diablo" for nothing! Haha
I'll never curse Hip for sending me someone who watches my videos and engages with them by commenting. Trolls do a UA-cam channel good!
For the record, that is verveine tea that I'm drinking. It keeps me from being compelled by vampires.
Its crazy how nothing has changed from then to now and how money is what everyone is crazy about.
Are you doing "modern" history too? whats your specialty?
Can you please do one on the English Civil War? :)
A full series on the Stuarts is on my to do list.
Nice to meet you! If you are, indeed, a reprobate, perhaps you should take a look at my e-lecture on the Second Great Awakening! Just search for Second Great Awakening and I'm coming up third or so in the search when I do it. It's got a thumbnail with a fire burning.
Can you do a video on the Thirty Years War?
yeah... if you wanna post 10 more videos on ap euro that'd be swell.... my final is in 4 days. haha. This helped a lotttttt so please keep posting more!!! (: Thank you! Wish my teacher teaches the way you do.
In-between absolute monarchy and constitutional monarchy is traditional monarchy. While there is no constitution, the monarch is limited in the sense that traditional institutions like the Church, guilds, municipalities, etc prevent them from being an absolute ruler. It's rather decentralized and weaker than any constitutional system which only ends up giving excessive power to the state.
Sounds like someone has been reading Montesquieu!
Absolutism was a thing to curve the old high aristocracy in favor of the low aristocracy and the bourgaise.
This video helped me so much. Thank you :)
The Jetsons' first appearance was in the 60s
The mentor mentioned it was the 80s.
Thanks for the info! Is part 2 up yet?
+taylorswizzzle I still have yet to record my lecture series on the Stuarts.
Tom Richey No problem. Thanks for the reply! I'm planning to watch all of your ap euro videos before the test
9:12 "the people (theoretically) have a voice through their representatives".
Can you do a history of Consumerism?
Habbit buuuuuurg
I love your tie Richey!!!! What is your favorite tea? I love Vanilla Chai.

I sure can!
YOU SAVE LIVES!! THANKS SO MUCH!

Even though the government is very limited by the Constitution it does seem like they find many loop holes to flex their power.
very helpful for my class debate thanks
So helpful for ap EuroThanks a lot!!!!!!
Correction, it makes me want to watch it again
didn't know Matt Damon was such a good law teacher...
One video on B.R. Ambedkar
I like how the thumbnail is a bottle of absolut vodka
Thank you!
Spousal abuse is WRONG, Josh! Just so we're clear.
This video makes me want to watch "The Jetsons"
You dont have to swear to uphold the constitution if there isnt any.
Privlige mean privat law.
Nice thanks a lot
Love it and I don't even take this class! Haha "Holy Grail"!
Only a sith deals in absolutes.
An absolute government of competent, Christian, right wingers sounds ideal.
