Johnny was by far the most underrated blues man out there and that is with all his awards. He was still bigger, better and authentic string man in the game period. Lead that Blues band in the sky Johnny
thanks for this interview, I am a 64 year old Johnny Winter fan from Buenos Aires and I have been enjoying his music for over 50 years , this expanded and candid video by Edgar has warmed my heart , spotaneous and full of love , Long live the blues
I literally bought a house because of Frankenstein lol. The builder put hi-def speakers in the ceiling (1972) and he demonstrated them with that song and it blew me away! We laid down on the carpeted floor and listened to it full blast and we decided that was the house for us! Still one of my favorites. Love all your work & Johnny's. Thanks and congrats on the award!
One Sunday morning as we pulled into our driveway after church, Frankenstein came on the AM radio. My whole family got out & I said 'leave the key in the accessory position, I want to hear this song'. The old Caddy didn't even have a stereo radio, but I closed my eyes and felt like I was flying!
What a wonderful interview with the legendary Edgar Winter. Edgar loved his brother Johnny and its really awesome for us fans to hear first hand stories from Edgar that show the close relationship they had and also the different interest in styles of music they played and enjoyed. Edgar really opens his heart here and we all benefit from this album (thanks Monique) as many of our (fans) favorite tunes are on this tribute album. The guest lineup is legendary and are all good friends of Edgars and more importantly they all loved and appreciated Johnny's music and impact on music history! I personally have seen Johnny play live 15-20 times from Texas to Florida. He is in fact the original and best Texas guitar slinger!
I had white trash albums 50 years ago but Johnny was mind blowing, they played well together, the best blues from Texas, never got to see either live here in Australia, such a buzz Still alive and well
I want to thank Edgar for sharing his talent, music and the story of brother Johnny, who just happens to be one of my favorite guitar players and showman. I did have the opportunity, in the early 70's at the San Diego Sports Arena, to see Johnny and Edgar play together. Rick Derringer was lead guitar for Edgar's group. Possibly my favorite concert of all time. ROCK AND ROLL FOREVER.
Wow! He is just a normal awesome person!!! I have seen him play and his brother Johnny too. Some of the greatest musicians I have ever had the pleasure to watch play.
Just saw that the album won a Grammy ❤- but wasn’t even aware of its existence. Came upon this interview while searching about the album- what a humble, gracious gentleman! I grew up listening to both Johnny and Edgar so this is such a treat!
I'm buying the vinyl right now. Both Johnny and Edgar are National treasures and vituoso musicians. RIP Johnny Winter you will always make people happy with your music. Edgar, Frankenstein is my all-time favorite instrumental to this day. I was 12 when you recorded it. Still blows my mind, my brother. Just listened to it again today. Never stop making music. We love you.
I remember as a kid watching him on Midnight Special or Rock Concert on weekend nights. Didnt learn about his brother, the great Johnny WInter til several years later.
God Bless You , l saw you a hundred years ago at keil in Saint Louis , You were the only band that kept playing when the lights came on ,it was great!!;
What a cool genuine guy, had the pleasure of netting him in the early 70s. He put on a killer show with guitarist Ronnie Montrose. Love the tribute to Johnny🎸
43 years I have been listening and enjoying this mans music. To the point where i know him, ewery note he has sung or played. Bless him, people like Edgar certainly make the world interesting and magnificent. Im 59 listening to him since I was 16 blown away by Tobacco road live with White trash Roadwork album. I have heard some amasing performances but never anything that tops that. I will listen to Edgar Winter for the rest of my days.
Thank you for this fantastic and illuminating interview! I saw Johnny at the Fillmore East and years later my band had the honor of opening for him at New York’s Bottom Line. Both Winter brothers are amazing, and hearing Edgar’s eloquent telling of their story is a blessing.
What a fantastic interview. Edgar is a humble Man- one of greatest all time multi instrumentalist’s. Great tribute to His Brother the Great Johnny Winter. Johnny is in the top 10 Blues guitarists of his generation. ❤️RIP Johnny. Thanks for sharing your love for your Brother 🇺🇸
This video has warmed my heart, man. Seeing one of my all time heroes talk about his brother (another of my heroes) really touched me. Sorry to be so mushy, but I have loved these guys work for almost my whole life. I love hearing their stories.
I was lucky enough to get to see both Winter brothers. Johnny was at. a music festival in Chattanooga and Edgar was 2001 in Atlanta with Ringo Starr. I have always been a fan of both. Thanks for the cool interview. His mention of Dan Hartman was awesome, his musicality on They Only Come Out At Night was spectacular . Johnny was my favorite guitar player, I still have a couple albums of his. Gonna get this one of Edgar. Thanks again for the cool interview 😎
Hey, hey Edgar! You played for my little syndicate of promoters, as did Johnny, in Windsor, London, and Thunder Bay Ontario many times! I’ll never forget you playing Frankenstein on our festival stage in London, as a big thunderstorm began coming in from behind the stage! What a visual! We had to shut down after Frankenstein was over to keep things “safe” but that show is burned into my brain - happened around 2002-3! You and I ran around town to find a suitable keyboard stand for you as we had not paid attention to your rider requirements of having a specific separation distance between the upper and lower levels based on your eyesight restrictions! Ahhh…..one of my fav music biz memories! Peace
As Edgar says, so much love on thos project... of Johnny, his music and the shared joy of music-making. Such a gift... and great tribute to a totally one of a kind, master musician. Thank you.
What a beautiful interview with Edgar Winters and talking about Dan Hartman great basis Rick Derringer. What a awesome rock band that was man we went to go see you guys in San Diego I remember that Edgar God bless your heart ❤️
I was 14 in 72 and rockin my ass off to the Winters boys. White Trash Live ... I wore that vinyl OUT! Saints and Sinners melted my turn table. Long Live!
Congrats on the Grammy last night for Brother Johnny. I had the pleasure of playing drums for James Cotton who won a Granny for Best Blus Duo with Johnny Winter in 1971. What a great gig here in Austin, Texas before James' death.
Edgar and Johnny Winters are 2 of my biggest heroes. They inspire me. They make musicians proud. You can’t be a musician or have a musicians ear and not love the Brothers Winters. Behind every musician is a socially anxious person who can’t do life like a regular person but can sometimes do so much more. A musician can make people Get up, Stand up. A song or melody can keep you alive. Musicians are like teachers and enterainers and painters all in one. So often musicians get dragged into having to live regular life (if they can) and for whatever reason they don’t follow their musical dreams. The Brothers Winter are American heroes that inspire us all. All musicians give us a gift. But sometimes a musician is so talented and inspiring that they are what I call “a Musicians musician” Well, both the Winters brothers go on my mount Everest of American musicians-musicians along with the likes of Jerry Garcia, Merle Haggard, and Afroman. No seriously. But anyway. Both brothers Winter inspire me. When I finally record and release my album I’m going to save up and get a Firebird V and maybe a little small part of johnny will be up there with me. I think theres a little edgar and johnny winter in every neighborhood in America, it’s up to other musicians to humor them when they show interest or ask questions. Take people under your wing. Get them started musically. Let them take their own journey. But give them a little push in the right direction. Just a chord or 2 is all it takes to get somebody on that track. Every musician is self taught. Hiring a teacher doesn’t learn ya, as we all know.
you make my heart cry. I loved Johnny as my guitar idol, than I heard Edgar on Roadworks and Tobacco Road and some of his modern funky songs and ever since they are THE Winters.
Thanks so much for this. I did not know about this album yet, and will surely get it. Edgar gives an amazingly thorough overview of the careers of both himself and Johnny and it is clear that he deeply loved and respected Johnny. I enjoyed most the part where he explains that he truly feels Johnny should be ranked up alongside the very best guitarists, and he names a few (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Hendrix and Clapton). This has been my own lifelong opinion. As a completist owning every piece of music ever committed to vinyl by my faves, for rock and blues, I actually rank Hendrix first, Johnny second, and Duane Allman third. A lifelong Deadhead, I probably place Jerry Garcia fourth, then Beck, then Page. I am 62 now and have spent my life turning people on to blues and rock music and have never tired of telling people who love guitar that they simply must hear Johnny Winter. As popular as Johnny was - and my very first concert was age 12 seeing him play to a sold out Madison Square Garden in NYC - he never became a household name in the way Hendrix, Page and Clapton managed. So I plan to go buy the vinyl version of Brother Johnny now. I hope many others will do the same, and then go hear the originals, As his hardcore fans all know, Johnny did killer covers by other artists - often better than the originals (think of Jumpin'Jack Flash, Stray Cat Blues, Highway 61 Revisited, Johnny B. Goode, Let it Bleed, Silver Train, etc). However, as Edgar points out, Johnny also wrote his own astonishingly original and explosive songs like Mean Town Blues, Self Destructive Blues, Rock & Roll, etc. And then he would turn around and write the most soulful songs imaginable, like I'm Not Sure. Second Winter, which Johnny produced, has to be the most underrated psychedelic blues album of all time. A true sonic masterpiece on every level. I can't wait to hear how Johnny and Edgar's fave songs are played on Brother Johnny. Thanks to Edgar for taking the time to lay down this interview. I also have all of Edgar's records, and Roadwork by White Trash is another masterpiece!
This video means so much to me OMG 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼thank you so much , growing up in Brazil I was a little kid that loved the blues , when my principal said to me “ I’ve heard you love the blues , well you’ve got listen to this Albino Cowboy from Texas his name is Jonny Winter “ he gave several BASF tapes with all the Johnny Winter albums on and Winter 88 was my most favourite, I heard those tapes over and over OMG in my stereo and in my Walkman , and I tell you this , in my opinion Johnny and Edgar Winter are the best musicians that ever lived , Johnny and Edgar Winter doing Tobacco road to me is the ultimate session of absolutely gifted musicians, I cannot believe that the same home had Johnny and Edgar winter ! My eyes an my ears was in total orgasmic delight watching and listening to Edgar telling about his brother Johnny ! All the best from South Australia 🇦🇺
I love this interview. I grew with another awesome musician Alan Haynes from Houston. We would skip high school and play my dad's 59 Les Paul all day long and listen to Johnny's music. Johnny was a major influence on Alan and in fact they ended up recording together. I think Johnny is the most underrated rock/blues player of all time. i can't remember how many times I saw him live and especially in the 70's when he was on the front page of Hit Parade magazine and was pop star of the month !!! Those were the best times my friends !!!! Smoking a big fat one, a few beers and Johnny Winter playing on the 8 track !!! RIP Johnny and a special thanks to Edgar who is another legend who produced some of the best music you will ever hear. Two legends from Texas and we are so proud to have been involved in music at that awesome time. Thank you Johnny and Edgar !!!
I've always been in awe and a fan of Johnny and Edgar Winter. I am still stunned and in love with the Edgar album nobody talks about, Entrance, amazing!
Great discussion. Edgar seems like such a thoughtful, humble person. I'm so glad he is still with us! EDIT: BTW I think they (The Winter Brothers) were responsible for some of the greatest music and top shelf innovators. Thank you.
I am 70 .when I was 16 a friend and I were hitch hiking to a cabin in ct. to camp for weekend.a hippie school bus picked us up and invited us to go to a concert in Spfld.Mass.edgar winter group was playing .in an old movie theatre with no seats. It was one of my first rock concerts.what a great show.i recall the lead singer was a blind guy dont know who he was tho
Tommy Shannon, Johnny's bassist on his self-titled, '69 debut, (later, as SRV's bassist in Double Trouble)...insisted BOTH Johnny & Edgar, are geniuses, both musically & intellectually. I once met an insider who claimed Edgar & his wife are into cats, Johnny...ghosts. 👍Edgar's analysis of Johnny's relentless ability to improvise & extended soloing; the Blues Trane 🚂
Great interview of an amazing artist and someone who seems like a genuinely good guy. I love the two of them and fortunately got to see them both. Thanks.
I finally got to see Johnny not long before he pasted away and was still loving his spunk for blues and steel guitar was wonderful to see him at variety playhouse in Atlanta was very fortunate to see him thank you winter brothers and Edgar great interview .
and we all had a real good time thank you Johnny and Edgar I used to jam with Chuck Blackwell when I first moved back to Tulsa he was old and I was done with California he taught me about you guys more than 15 minutes then I learned in 40 Years of struggling in rock and roll man the feeling is the best hard message to convey
I've been following yours and Johnny's musical careers from the get go and in many respects that has been a lifetime ago. Thank you for all the great music over the years. I listened to your music as a teenager and I'm still listening today. I think of Johnny often and remember him when I pray. Long life to you Edgar and may you be blessed with good health from here on in. Keep On Rockin'.
Johnny and Edger have been some of my top artist dating to the early 70s, I had several of their records including "They Only Come out At Night" Edger Winter and one my favorite Johnny Winter albums was "Second Winter" where the guitar work on this album was extraordinary. RIP Johnny.
i saw you both in the late 70's....my favorite song was TOBACCO ROAD....I ended up driving tour bus out of nashville, then tupelo ms,and carried WARREN with GOV'T MULE....on many tours.
Much love and health to U Edgar I'm sure Johnny is looking down smiling. Johnny will always be one of the greatest ever and he will always belong at the top just amazing
Thank you for posting this interview with Edgar. He is such a great person, and I could sit and listen to him talk all day. His voice/accent is like a melody.
Edgar was and still is a favorite of mine and it is so awesome to see him being so humble. I respect this so much. His repect for others is something the world is missing today. I hope he knows he is loved and repected the same way he loves and respects others. To me, he is everything he intended to be.
Wow. I never saw Edgar in an interview before. I'm 65 yo. What a well down-to-earth man he is. So glad to see this. Thanks for the post.

I'm so glad I had a chance to see Johnny ONCE ( sadly only once! ) a couple years before his passing.
Hey, hey Edgar! You played for my little syndicate of promoters, as did Johnny, in Windsor, London, and Thunder Bay Ontario many times! Edgar is cool. So great to see that he is still making fine music after all these years!

Thank you, Edgar.
Thank you for posting this interview with Edgar. He is such a great person, and I could sit and listen to him talk all day. His voice/accent is like a melody.
Thanks for sharing this I love Edgar Winter and this was a treat to watch
Edgar was and still is a favorite of mine and it is so awesome to see him being so humble. I respect this so much. His repect for others is something the world is missing today. I hope he knows he is loved and repected the same way he loves and respects others. To me, he is everything he intended to be.
