This is great. Because I struggle with scrupulosity, I have trouble discerning which phrase or word to pick. With several of them being praised by different saints I cannot help but feel that I am choosing the wrong one. I know that this is false because the prayer of the heart is beyond words and any of these would do. But my scrupulosity and heart battle it out which can be crippling. I love the Jesus prayer, and the O God come to my assistance, and the shorter ones as well. I also don't agree with the distinction between Latin and Eastern Christian thought on this matter. Although they both have different backgrounds and approaches, both lungs of the Church are based on the same foundation and they do connect. For example, many saints in the Latin rite recommend short arrow prayers which is the same thing. And the Cloud of Unknowing is an ancient western book basically recommending the same thing - finding one word to meditate on.
i think words are like an instrument meant for our weakness, but once you would establish a communion with God, it's the feeling of presence of God that matters the most. Let me give you a modern example. Elder Ephraim of Arizona when flying for the first time in US, over the dersert of Phoenix, Arizona, he was informed by God to build a monastery, which he did, the Monastery of St. Anthony in the Arizona desert. God didn't spoke to him with words but purely in his heart. That's why the cleansing of the heart is so important. Lord have mercy.

This is very well presented. Thank you. (Regarding "pronunciation" the "ch" in "hesychast,"
is usually pronounced with a "k" or an "h" sound.).
