Jeff Daniels Sings and Plays Acoustic Guitar - Kelly Clarkson Shocked

- Jeff Daniels the famous actor was recently on The Kelly Clarkson Show and he surprised her by bringing a guitar and playing an original song. I found his performance worthy of this commentary video that is geared toward the more technical side of his skills as a singer, acoustic guitarist and songwriter. If you are an acoustic guitarist, singer or gigging solo acoustic player you will find this video particularly interesting.

Congratulations on 4.45K subscribers! Outstanding!
I really enjoyed your video, I’m a Jeff Daniels fan too. I think he blew everyone away with his song, it was excellent! I’ve got to learn to play it now too! Lol!
I agree with everything that you said. I also love the quote you mentioned, “Art should comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable!”. That is absolutely true!
Thank you for your great videos! I really appreciate and enjoy them all!
😎👍🎸
Thanks so much. It’s nice to know hear when someone appreciates the vids. I believe that quote is from Caesar Cruz who was a Mexican artist
Jeff Daniels blew me away! He's the man!
Agreed
Congrats Frank on the 4,000 milestone! Well done!
Thanks so much. I never woulda thought
@@FrankPersico I would and much more…..one brick at a time!!
I watched that video few daze ago! Jeff Daniels is Awesome! He has a new show out on Netflix, A Man In Full.
Congratulations Frank! Whoo~Hoo🎊 🎉on 4k!
Time To Resolute 💪🎊🍻🎶🍹🎉
Oh wow I gotta check that out!
@@FrankPersico highly recommend!
Very nice comments on this Jeff Daniel's vid that I discovered 2 days ago via YT channel "Music is win". I'm pretty sure no guitar player can remain stone cold and not be moved by this song and it's marvelous rendition. Thanks for your thoughts and the sharing !
I had no idea he played all these years. Seems this is nothing new to many but it is to me and you u lol
The Martin guitar youtube channel has a great video of Jeff performing this song 13 years ago
Awesome I gotta check that out. Thanks for sharing. I can’t believe all these years and I never knew about Jeff Daniel’s playing

Thanks frank I seen old Jeff play about a week ago on that show I thought he played and sang amazing glad you learned the song love the vid😀
Oh wow cool. Yeah he’s great. Thanks for commenting:)
Yeah 4 g’s Lets keep it rollin’.. Thanks for the nod.. You nailed all the reasons I sent it to ya!! Great job of picking it up… I’d kill to be-able to travis pick..
Thanks brotha! Gonna try to get out to see ya this week!
I was moved by the original clip, but that quote about art comforting the disturbed etc, blew me away…attributed to Cesar A. Cruz…that feeling of creating that is what we musicians chase and when it happens sometimes it’s beautiful….thanks for this post…
The first time I head that quote was from my vocal teacher. And I never forgot it. Thanks for commenting glad you like the vid
Thank you for showing such class. I was dumbstruck and awed and Touched by his song too. What a surprise. Never expected that. I love what you say about Art too.
Thanks for your Tribute. You are honorable.
I appreciate the kind words. All the best to you
I saw Jeff Daniel's play at a community college in Michigan. He's an awesome singer song writer and lives close where I reside. Much respect 🙏 to you and yours. 🇮🇹 🇺🇸
He sure is and Thanks so much.
I have only followed you for about a week now and I really like your relaxed and confident style. I wonder if you could do some videos on how you learn a song and then arrange it for a solo performance.
For sure. What songs do you have in mind?
That would be great. I think just the next song you decide to learn. How do you decide the key, what to keep what to cut how to adapt it to one voice, one guitar. Walk us through some of those decisions. Thanks.
Frank, which guitars do you keep/use close at hand (either acoustic or electric)? Just curious. Also, great show(s)! I enjoy your easy, affable and intelligent manner in teaching (e.g., the looper and others).
Thanks so much. My main gigging acoustic is a Gibson songwriter with a fishman pickup. My fave acoustic I own is my Martin D35. As for electrics I have a standard strat and 52 reissue tele. And a few vintage silver face fender amps. Nothing fancy
They should call it Atkins style or something. Merle Travis only used his thumb and one finger, so he couldn’t even play “Travis” style.
Good point. Chet Atkins… what a stud
Just found the channel. Jeff Daniels has listened to a lot of Guy Clark, I'm guessing that's the source of the vocal affectation. Is that a D-28 you're playing? Keep up the good work on the content. Try not to get burned out.
Ahhh maybe that is the vocal affectation. My spider senses were telling me something is going on there. (I’m doing this shit a long time lol) the martin you see me playing is a d-35. I plan on keeping up with content and deff trying to stick to a pace that is sustainable. It is a hard grind so trying to keep in all in perspective. Thanks for commenting :)
@FrankPersico The lyrics are a giveaway as well. There was an episode of Austin City Limts about 15 years ago with Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett that's worth a look. It's floating around UA-cam somewhere.
Cory wasn’t the worst, I think you forgot Steven Seagal…
Oh yes I certainly did! Now this may be a new video I need to do
@@FrankPersico I'd skip the Steven Seagal video. Everyone is trashing him right now for being fat, old and bad at martial arts. He is already down, lets not pile on the guy any more than needed.
Artists are Artists... most dont work in just one medium
So true. He’s just a very talented individual
Hi
I have tried to learn this song for a while now, but i have not come as far as you. Would you be interested in doing a tutorial?
I wouldn’t prob do a full YT vid only cuz I didn’t get too many inquiries about it. Feel free to email me any questions I have my email link in profile
@@FrankPersico Thanks for your answer. The part I am struggeling with the most is the intro. If you ever do a more detailed video on how to play the song, please let me know 👍🙂
What’s one thing you learned from this video?
Never assume
Jump here. 2:20. It took this long to ge to a point
👎
I saw this video too, was the first time I’d heard he played. The guy has being at this for awhile though, who knew?🤷♂️
I found this 11 year old video at Norm’s Rare Guitars. He said Martin worked with him on a signature guitar. 🤫

Yeah little did I know he was doing this a long time
Jeff did a movie a gajillion years ago that he wrote and directed himself called Escanaba in da Moonlight about a guy who is the oldest man in the family to not have bagged a buck yet. Filmed in his home state of Michigan. I believe it's on Prime. It's worth a watch. He wrote a song about the character he plays called The Ballad Of The Buckless Yooper. Would also recommend The Dirty Harry Blues, the song he wrote when he starred opposite Clint Eastwood as a bad guy.
Cool I will check it out. I have actually heard his Dirty Harry blues. Fantastic such clever writing
Jeff used to open every gig of his with a song he wrote called If William Shatner Can I Can Too about celebs who think they can do music. I love his songs Paris Moon and Middle Of The Night. The guys too humble for his own good. He's dropped two new singles in the past month. He coulda sang one of those on Kellys show but chose to sing a song he put out 15 yrs ago.
Very entertaining tune/. I have heard this one
Jeff was always a great guitar player and blues. I heard him when I was young. He was amazing and he still as an older man or gentleman. He is amazing Guitar Player so he always played guitar. Just wanted to give you info.
Yes I can’t believe I’m just finding out about this now!
Yeah man, he’s the real deal. I found out a while back that he plays and he’s good and went through a similar thought process… he has a signature Martin (probably a limited run, but still…)
He’s definitely the real deal
This is an old song of his. I found out years ago that he plays. And he's really good.
Yea I was blown away.
Your interruptive narration ruined experience.
Check out the link to the actual show in the description … no narrative 👍
Awesome
🙌
I loved when he said you don't have to be good- I can do that... but then he plays amazing like I wish I could! Sandbagged!
That’s when I knew we were in trouble lol
Jeff has toured both by himself and with his son Ben and Ben’s band. He is an amazing performer live and a true story teller. In the mode of the greats like Chapin, Croce and Lightfoot
Yeah amazing! I was blown away: how did I never know this?!? lol
@@FrankPersico I found his music after seeing him play and sing in the Newsroom’s final episode. He does How I Got to Memphis. Since I have seen him live twice and will buy a ticket any time he gets anywhere near where I live.
Solid Brother! Great commentary on something that is worth pointing out. Keep it coming
Much appreciated.
u need a thumb pick lol
Yeah I never like using them. I dunno
Kelly had no idea what was coming.
Jeff is solid when it comes to picking and singing thanks for your reaction.
You bet! Thanks for commenting
Very Cool , all the way around!! And Congratulations on 4000 !!
Thanks so much.
FJPers! Congrats on 4k! Onwards and upwards
Thanks my brotha
Right on. I needed some tears of joy in my eyes this morning.
