In this video join me (and Joli) for a super long 2 hour plant chores video! I imported some plants recently and they've not all acclimated as planned, so some major plant rehabilitation is in order. There have been lots of plant to do's recently - repotting, watering, dusting, pruning, propagating, repotting, potting up and soooo much more. My plant chores have been getting on top slightly recently and I've been feeling a bit burnt out and overwhelmed by all my plant care. I talk about plant burnout in this video, and some of the things I do to stay motivated when it comes to caring for my houseplants. As far as Ross's hayfever, check all your scented products to see if anything is different or new. Soaps, cleaning products, detergents, candles, etc. Sometimes it is as simple as a new candle or new laundry detergent scent. Good luck! Love your channel

The way I needed this exact video while holiday decorating today. I accidentally caused some of my collection to rot by trying a new hydro pesticide and this made me feel much better about my once thriving but now sad rehabs.
Don't feel bad...I have a small plant 🌵 collection (50-60) plants, and I just spent 3 - 4 days treating them all for root rot. I lost 8-10, and propagated the others, but some won't make it😕😭. I'm new to the plant life! I thought it was as simple as putting them where you want, water, light, and leaf cleaning, but that is far from the truth, but now I know😊 💫🤷

Yay love a long video 💚. For Alocasia corms I propagate in damp perlite in a shallow dish inside a glass cloche (IKEA) and have 100% success rate doing it that way 🎉
I haven’t finished watching, your pain at possibly losing such a beautiful plant (the first one, sorry I have a hard time learning all of the names), but your pain is palpable. Ross’s response that it is f--filodendroned, though, was excellent. 😂
Hi Claire, for imported plants, I always accustom them with coco coir if it's fine roots or sphagnum moss when the roots is big,but never directly in hydro. My collection is in hydro but to get the roots used to the soil, it almost never works directly in hydro. But in general, coco or sphagnum moss works 95%. So much for my experience. Imported plants have to drink, but as you know, if they're too shocked, they don't drink anymore, and that's why hydro isn't immediately appropriate.
I put the last leaf of my Cuprea in water just to enjoy the leaf for a little longer. That was about 3 months ago? Not sure.?
Then I just sort of forgot about it.... It's in my kitchen and I could see it every day, I noticed the leaf was doing fine...
I decided to just lift the leaf to make sure the roots were ok..... New growth!!!! 😊Had started growing.
First I put it into stratum but it was unstable in that.
So now I have it in moss.

I love longer videos! I don’t know why SHORTS are popular. Allergies-usually the first thing the doc asks is have you changed any products you’re using daily-soaps, lotions etc. I always start with eliminating chemical things before I start on natural stuff. Hope you figure it out! Thanks for the video Claire & Joli!
the veitchii was probably grown in soil and shipped in moss, you likely suffocated it with the finer grain semi hydro leveled above the crown, You didn't do a slow transition or let it grow water roots or remove the tertiary roots which are always the first to rot when transitioning to semi hydroponics

For a Christmas tree, you can get a Norfolk Island Pine and dress it up as a Christmas tree. Those can be grown indoors, so you get the look of a Christmas tree, whilst still being able to keep the plant alive.

My experience with pon says that not every plant likes the transition (especially an import) if you water immediately. Since I started transitioning my plants from soil to pon I don't water them for a couple of days/weeks and they seem to like it beter this way. Otherwise I put them first in water so they develop water roots, then you can immediately water when you transfer to pon. Once established in pon i do give them a water reservoir.

This exact thing happened to me with my super narrow Veitchii from Tropicals Plants. It got stem rot and that was it. I have a chonk that’s been sitting in a prop box for ages and still hasn’t done a thing 🥲 Sad days, I feel for you girl ❤
Ross's allergy issue may be bugs of some sort. My husband is allergic to cockroaches and his flares at night when they're active outside. We have our house treated monthly. In an apartment, it could be some night active pest outside or at a neighbors. Allergy testing is the best way to nail it down.
I would definitely still soak the veitchii in 50/50 hydrogen peroxide for 10min and add a few ml to the water it’s recovering in. Having the chunk exposed to oxygen is exactly right but you still need the hydrogen peroxide to disinfect.
It’s very possible it had some rot already when you unboxed it but next time I’d definitely let it acclimate in moss & perlite before transferring to pon and make sure you only submerge the roots, you can give it a support stake if you need to. I think the main stem was too far submerged in the pon when you first potted it.
Anthurium can be so tricky to import. I recently imported a chamberlainii that looked totally perfect but also had some rot that I noticed a couple days after unboxing. Fingers crossed yours recovers 💕💕

Sorry about your Vetchii, I can tell right at the beginning you had the stems an main stem covered up to deep. There should never be any kind of substrate that far up on anthurium. Basically it was planted to deep. Please don’t blame after care on the imports. 🫶🏼💚

@1:16:00 I have a triangular trellis I made out of sticks and twine that I wrap my long golden pothos onto! It's a fun "Christmas tree" that gets me to interact with that giant plant and give it extra love! I feel this predicament every year and have done some pretty fun trees in an effort to forgo getting a tree. I once made an invisible one out of ornaments, a cardboard, and some fishing line!
Claire have you ever tried an anti fungal/bacterial powder like cinnamon or essential oil to help stop the spread of the infection? Something like that might help dry the rot enough to give the plant a chance to recover.
That was what I was wondering, I would have cleaned the rotten areas with hydrogen peroxide or a copper based anti fungal spray, then applied cinnamon.
So far I’ve been having AWESOME success with corms in the shallow water method, and so far things are happening quickly!
I harvested a bunch (my first ever corms) mid-October, and it only took a couple of weeks for me to start seeing the growth pick up and now just over a month later, multiple have tiny leaves already, and a bunch more are going to have leaves unfurling within the next few days most likely :) I haven’t lost any to rot yet, but I’m hoping it stays that way 😅❤
My variegated Frydek corms are the ones that have leaves already (one just opened its second leaf) 🥰 corms are so much fun!

I have a drimiopsis maculata. It needs a lot of sun! When it gets enough sun the leaves get black dots on it. For me it does well in both leca semi-hydro and regular soil.
If your veitchii doesn’t make it see if you can get a baby one! I got mine as a seedling (so much cheaper and acclimated to less than ideal home conditions lol) It sized up quickly and is one of my easiest plants

I do have to say I've had success with propagating my Alocasia Bambino corms in soil and just keeping it misted and damp but not super soaked. Beautiful plant and I'm hoping to expand my Alocasia collection in the future.
About the allergy, I agree with the comments as I also get rather bad hay fever symptoms in the mornings. It started about 2 years ago, and went to my GP for a blood test. The results were that I have ‘medium’ allergy to dogs. Never had this before with my dogs, my new dog only has a very fine single coat and is not supposed to cause problems for people allergic to dogs. Since Ross is now exposed to your dog for much longer periods, it could be the cause.

For Ross’s hay fever I recommend he take night showers that way he isn’t sleeping in any potential allergens all night and to wash your bedding on the hottest setting to kill any dust mites. Allergy covers for bedding can also be helpful too! I work in an allergist office and dust mites and certain types of mold that live in soil are common hay fever triggers. Hope this helps!

Sorry Claire for your Vechii. I wouldn't wait to do the H. Peroxide treatment. If the exposure to air doesn't work out, it doesn't look like you have much left with which to work.
I'd scrub the rotted area with soap and a bit of baking soda, rinse with water, then immerse in hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes, press some sulfur powder on the affected areas, and then let it dry as you have initially done.

There’s a good chance that the veitchii was put into pon wayyy to early. I feel like it may have shocked from being in moss/soil and then put into such a wet substrate so soon. That pretty much is what happened to most of my pon transfers. It’s like they weren’t ready for a water reservoir so they rotted. I had to start by watering it through like soil plants and then slowly introduce the water reservoir. Another thing I find with pon is that it can be super heavy for some roots, so I started mixing close to 40/50% perlite into it and it seemed to help a lot with growing healthier roots! Hope this helps❤!
Regarding Ross being sick, I really don’t think it’s the plants. The same thing happens to me when I travel or visit my family. I could never figure out what it was because plants weren’t a factor. I’d suggest he try to get an allergy panel done. It’s basically to help eliminate anything that could be giving you a reaction. Good luck! ❤🍀 😊
I was thinking the same, this is easier with little seedlings. mature specimen are a bit difficult to acclimate to a different growing method. Also the roots may have been too enclosed with little aeration. veitchii is pretty much a true epiphyte

Love your videos .. Not sure if anyone else has offered any advice on the vetchii, many if not all Anthurium don't like wet roots that pon was sopping with water which I think is what is causing your issues and the crown was wet which caused the rot At the crown down the Middle.. I've done this several times and after 100's of dollars finally realized Anthurium like moist (sorry had to use it) not wet roots and cooler temps some of mine given I live in the Midwest I dry them out several inches before watering.. keep up the great work though I love watching your videos and your splendid is goals as mine is looking about like your vetchii lol
I bought a mystery box of corms, they were all really dry when they arrived, Google said to soak in water for a few hours-days so I tried about 4 hours, I was scared to take the darker skin off and think I left it on for too long as they all grew white mould and rotted 😭😭 ill stick to buying plants til I know more about what I'm doing lol😅

When it comes to alocasia propagation, I’m having a lot of success sprouting the corms in sphagnum moss mixed with perlite. I just plant them in a plastic cup and create a little water reservoir, seal the top with cling film, throw them under lights and forget about them 😄. However I have yet to try the shallow water method so I do not know which is better

You stressing about the rehab and just trying to prop what you can is very relatable for me this week lol. Winter in the northern hemisphere…I ordered some small starter plants with “winter shipping” and a heat pack. They got stuck in the post and no heat pack 😫. But I think I was able to save at least a teeny cutting of all but one. I got refunded thankfully.
FOR HAY FEVER I would try local honey he could take daily and stinging nettle tea daily, they both help alot with spring type allergies which is kind of the same thing.

I’d suggest getting him tested so you know for sure- 😊 as for hay fever you need something that air pollinates like weeds or a pine tree or olive tree. Fingers crossed it’s simple. Mold: Just add some springtails to your plants! This helps so much! 😀😀 They eat mold and fungi and reproduce really easily. I do this for a year now and I haven't had root rot since and a lot less fungus nats.
Hayfever: we have the same the last couple of weeks, for us (asthma people) it's the weather (high humidity). For us it works wonders to open the windows just before going to bed. Or Lying down with arms overhead or lying on your tummy helps us both a lot. Lying down changes how you breathe so evening and mornings in bed/on the couch could explain it? Hopefully it's as simple as that and not plant allergies!

What I've done to beautiful leaves I had to see go is I got a canvas and black paint. I removed the canvas from the frame. The frame was sanded down to use like a picture frame instead. I laid the canvas down and painted the leaf or leaves in black paint and pressed it to the canvas, and slowly pulled it away. Doing this gave me a beautiful print that I then stapled to the back of the frame and cut off any straggle bits, and hung it. Wish I could show a picture.
For Hay Fever.... Is he more stressed out than usual. Just as a change in environment can stress plants, it can stress us as well. Stress can amplify allergies. Love your videos.
I really feel for you! Did you have the top of the plant in pon? I usually pile moss around the top air roots, but I’m not sure if that would have helped in this case. Fingers crossed for a healthy vetchii
Hey, I get lots of annoying allergies. If it's in the morning and night there is a good chance its dust mites. A different breed to what he's used to etc. Deep clean under the bed and pull up the mattress, vacuum everything. All the little corners etc be surgical lol. If it keeps happening have a look at a Corsi-Rosenthal box, they can be made with a cardboard box, a filter and a fan with duct tape. Hope this helps. Allergies suck! Also look into things you might not expect such as changes in food, perfumes, hairsprays shampoos etc that you might be using. Good luck!

if you think the tradescantia is getting to leggy, you can always just snap some of the branches and put it directly down in the same pot. emmediatly makes is fuller :)
Deffo here for the cleaning/organising videos, and the long yins 🤘beconase nasal spray is amazing for alergies, works in minutes and you getused to firing it upyer nose pretty quick 😂
I'll get hay fever reactions in wintertime as well. It from house dust, maybe dustmites in the mattres, pillows or carpets. Its getting worse in winter because of central heating. The is not much i can do about it, but to keep dusting, wash my nose under the sink or with a nose rinsing can. And if it getting realy worse i have too use nosespray or an antihistaminica. If it came from dust mites it really can help to get rit off the carpet, hoover the mattress, use spray on the pillows and blankets. I have got the reactions since 2020, since i work more from home. I'll never have the same issues in the office
It could be fabric softener/cleaning products. Sometimes if I change mine my partner goes on sneezing fits until I figure out what it is and change it. If it’s a new thing it might be worth thinking what you’ve changed recently in regards to cleaning/washing products

Clare, the day we brought our daughter home from the hospital, for the first time, we found ourselves in the emergency room by that evening. It turned out that she had an allergic reaction to the soil in my plants. I was forced to get rid of all of them. In today’s plant world, there is hydroponics that can be substituted for soil. It would be helpful if he could get the allergy tests to confirm what he’s allergic to. In the end, you may have to switch completely to Pon, but that is an alternative if you need it. Hope this helps.

Hey Claire I can sympathise with poor Ross’ allergies. Hopefully it isn’t Yoli, maybe check the bedroom pots/moss poles for mould. Limit scented products…if you have an air conditioner I would also make sure that’s had a good clean inside. I would limit the bedroom plants ones not flowering and in semi hydro. Best of luck ❤
My decision on real vs fake Christmas tree was heavily influenced by living in an apartment and the fact that it would be a huge effort to get it in and out. I had never had a fake tree in my life until I got mine two years ago. As long as you get a decent one you can barely tell it's fake from far away, and I got one that's prelit AND IT ROTATES!!!!
I had a variegated peace Lilly that flowered all the time that my son was allergic too as he has terrible hay fever. Had to give it away in the end… he also has bad hay fever in the morning and evening, but we’re surrounded by pine trees and that triggers his allergies quite badly. I’ve got lots of different types of plants and he doesn’t seem to be allergic to them. Good luck, I hope you find the source for Ross 🤞
Did you put your veitchii immediately on a reservoir in the pon? I was initially putting new pon transfers on reservoir when i first got into pon, and i had several plants rot. I then started top watering new transfers for 4-6 weeks before introducing a reservoir, so the plant has time to acclimate to the new substrate, and success rate has been near 100% with this strategy.
I live in tropical Queensland where I can easily grow more plants than I know what to do with, and even I struggle with the philodendron Esmeraldence. I took cuttings about a year ago and all but one have died. The one that survived is the one I ‘lost’ outside in my green house. I spotted it the other day looking like a new baby plant. I’m too scared to move it 😂
Never be put off by a plant having sudden issues after it’s transported. It can take weeks for certain plants to properly acclimate to your home , and even though they can arrive IMMACULATE , sadly… it doesn’t mean they weren’t stressed during the movement process, which if you ‘Put yourself in the plant pot’ 😂…. You could imagine it wouldn’t be such a pleasant experience being pulled out the ground & shipped wherever in the world… in the back of a cold van or plane.. plus’s the temperature changes around all that etc etc 😂
Just basically, never be put off….. unless plants come absolutely swarming with bugs , or it’s excessively rotting away beyond saving, usually your plant will bounce back , in time.
Remember , plants are living things.. it’s a different type of living BUT , they will do what they can to survive.
I recently got 4 different types of Alocasia from House of Kojo , and as you can imagine the first two weeks went fine and then over night , 3 of the 4 lost ALL new growths.. leaves are starting to warp & curl on themselves & now black spots..
I know Alocasia are famously fussy plants….😂 and my water wasn’t filtered…. So that could definitely be a contributing factor, but they all seem to be stable now and slowly recovering. It’s also important to say I did buy them at this time of year , and they were shipped😂 (5weeks ago)
So yeah shock definitely had a part to play , but as I said they’ll recover & bounce back with care & time 😊

It’s a Begonia - Merry Christmas… there awesomeness in plant form , and from my own personal experience they are EXTREMELY EASY TO CARE FOR.
Awesome colour (blends of dark or bright greens with a bright silver blotched pattern that has this crazy bright or dark red hue overlaying that pattern)

I have sensitivities to a lot of things like pollen dust etal. A daily spray of a mild steroid spray keeps all the reactions at bay and gives me no side effects.
Has the 'stopping smoking' survived all this stress?
The tradescantia zebrina is a crawling plant and if it hangs down unsupported, that can cause problems.
Rosses allergies; your laundry detergent? Switching made a huge difference for me. I use Samsclub Ethos or their store brand, lavender scent. Our Hy-Vee Grocery has a nice natural brand also. And btw, I LIKE your orange plant hanger..🤗💚🌿

I'm watching this episode today 5/18/24; About allergies, I have very bad allergies. I cannot have plants on my bed stand when I am sleeping. I can have a few in my bedroom. Also I am more allergic to some plants, for example a spider plant ( so I don't have any in my house). You may have to move things around and see if it helps his allergies. Best of luck 👍🏼👍🏼

Sympathies for your Anthurium - Veitchii. I recently bought a Syngonium - Pink Splash. After 2 weeks, the leaves went yellow. I took what was left and washed off all the soil. Culprit rot!! 😭 I salvaged what I could and placed it in Leca. Though a sorry sight with one stem holding on to a dead leaf, there is light at the end of the tunnel. A small shoot is emerging from the stem. I wish youluck
I have noticed when my Hoyas bloom, my allergies get worse, especially at night when their scent seems most potent. I also think the mold theory is valid? I have to give my plants soil a sprinkle of cinnamon occasionally to keep it under control. A couple of my kids have mold allergies and with 175+ plants, sniffles happen lol, but cinnamon helps.
Perhaps it is something seasonal? I know in the states because the weather is so wonky, that we have an over abundance of allergens. Mold, ragweed, etc. also, some develop allergies as they age…….. Food for thought.
