Gedda's is so thrilling because it feels totally connected to his torso, connected to the chest, not just a head tone with no dynamic connection to the rest of the voice.
Nicolai Gedda! Even from bottom to top... complete ease on the high D and such a beautiful tone!

No doubt Gedda's high D is the best and most integrated with the rest of his voice. But Joseph Schmidt is also great. Most of the others sound like falsetto, or worse. Where is Helge Roswaenge's brilliant version?

I'd say most of them should leave the notes above tenor high C to metal singers 😁🤘 But Samuel Kim's, Nicolai Gedda's and Juan Diego Florez's high D's were awesome!

Gedda and J D Florez. I think. There is a sameness in quality all up to the top. Amazing.

This samples confirm my statement: Nicolai Gedda was the best tenor of 20th and 21th century. There was great singers but Mo. Gedda was one of a kind.

Because he does it with ease a beauty - what a master voice
I think Legay does better in the 1952 recording- but I'm biased because that's the one I listen to the most. Overall endearing and well done performance by all. His lead in is similarly soft, I like that contrast, but the vibrato is much less wide and it's more energetic (albeit shorter.)
However, Gedda takes the cake for this one. AMAZING! I liked Hoppe too! Really strong.

Where is Rosvaenge's version from May 1936 or even the 1928 version with two D's?(Note--NOT the film version) Better than most, if not all, of these.

Reminder to the people in the comments, they are being asked to sing a high D a note above the normal extent of what they are asked to sing.
There's a recording by Schmidt on UA-cam where he sings a D. I'm not sure it's the same recording you used but, if it is, one of them is off.

The most is high E and not D...
Ertl and Legay were actually bad... Behle was B, as was Blake and Florez,.... Canonici was an A, as was Kim and Geddas. Canonici being my favourite.
Legay obviously just sang falsetto, but at least it was pleasant and tasteful. Some of these are just squeezed out and terrible.

Canta tú Rober, tal vez lo haces mejor que todos ellos. Algunos, como Gedda, Canonici y Kim, suenan como una combinación de voz mixta, brillante, potente y expansiva. Flórez da la nota, pero se le afloja el vibrato y no es expansiva. Otros, se oyen velados y muy pobres de voz. Lástima que Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Nino Martini, Eugene Conley y Alfredo Kraus no grabaron esta aria. Pero tú podrías superar a algunos de ellos, ¿no? Saludos, Robert.
Of course Gedda. But listen to Adolf Dallapozza too. He is second best imho.
