This song was written for Francis II (1792-1806), the last Holy Roman Emperor. After Napoleon destroyed the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Francis II established the Austrian Empire (as Francis I) and ruled over it until his death in 1835. However, the Austrian version of this anthem, which was composed in 1826, is the more famous version, and was used for Francis II until his death. From 1835 until 1848, this song was translated as "Segen Öst'reichs hohem Sohne, unsern Kaiser Ferdinand" (Bless the High Son of Austria, Our Emperor Ferdinand!) After Ferdinand abdicated in 1848, the 1826 version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was used for Franz Joseph until 1867. That was when Austria became the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and from 1867 until the fall of the Empire in 1918, the anthem was Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze. Most people claim that the 1826 version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was the anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, as I pointed out, this is not the case, because Austria-Hungary did not even exist in 1826.
I remember someone made a fictional Egypt with a Christian Coptic monarchy and their anthem had the same tune of Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser. I volunteered to write lyrics for it and he accepted. It wasn’t perfect, it could use some tweaks and other stuff but it was a good exercise at Lyric composition.
