@@stephenm6100 I'd heard that about Jim Breaks as well but can't find anything about it....Him and Kung Fu were epic bouts... Dynamite Kid was a beast as well.
Met Haystacks in Germany when on Wrestling Tour with Tony St Clair...never met anyone as big since....came to our Cookhouse and ate 6 full dinners and a Cheeseboard selection...was a very nice, pleasant and quiet man.
Dave Finlay was a very talented Wrestler, great technical ability. I don't know much about his career in the states but I hope he made good money out there.
mrKkarrma Awwww no, I didnae know he passed away, a cool guy he was too, my sympathies to his family :'( I would put a thumb up, but in this case it's thumbs down, not only was he loved in Perth but the whole of Scotland loved him, R.I.P. big fella...
4pm on Saturday afternoons, used to watch it with my dad, now those good old days are gone, Big Daddy gone, Giant Haystacks gone, and even my dad passed away in 1991, certainly the 70's and 80's was a great time to grow up in, not like today, what do we have to look forward to now? ...cooking programmes on Saturday mornings, and the dreadful X factor.
My mum did baking on Saturday afternoons and just hearing Ken Walton's commentary takes me right back to when I was 6 years old - mum died when I was 8.
It's such a shame that we didn't get the proper wrestling backstories that were being used in the States at this time...I loved my Saturday afternoon wrestling as a kid...but the Promos and gimmicks of, say Memphis wrestling at this time (with about 10% of the audience of World of Sport!...)well, it would have made this heaven...
Big Daddy was one of the wrestlers who helped to destroy British television wrestling. In a tag match, it was always the same. The co-wrestler in Daddy`s corner, got battered while Big Daddy stayed outside the ropes and joined the bout for the last minute or so, to win the match. He actually worked for only about three or four minutes in total, with a break part way through.
He scripted all his bouts with his money grabbing family. Haystacks was never allowed to get the better of him, usually racing out of the ring after 30 seconds with Daddy, like he was petrified when in reality, he could have knocked Big Daddy into next week
Great Camera work on introducing Fit Finlay at 1:08 ! Those MC's in the 70's and 80's could kill any build up and anticipation stone dead. They were really useless. I love watching them now, dressed up in a hire suit from Burtons, waving the programme which helps them remember the names...it's a curious anomaly of British Wrestling that the bouts opened this way for so long.
Great memories. Haystacks was always ranting about how good he was-though was skillfull at avoiding Big Daddy in tag contests-as for Fit Finlay-he was another who you loved to hate, especially when his wife-the lovely(!!) Princess Paula-as foul as a box of frogs started mouthing off. Brilliant stuff
Eez-eh, Eez-eh, Eez-eh, big daddy was my first hero as a kid, used to go watch the wrestling on a Thursday night at the end of the pier at Morecambe, before it was burned down, great memories ✌️😎.
I remember watching this at the time but I couldn't remember how it ended. Thanks for uploading. Drew McDonald as a goodie didn't last. This must be one of Giant Haystacks' last splashes. I assume he was too heavy to do them without injuring people.
Great memories. All showmanship but who cared? Haystacks was always good for a rant and Daddy was the greatest. Fit Finlay ended up in the States. Well remember that old boot of of a wife Princess Paula-half Cherokee but all mouth with her feathered headdress and ready slaps when Finlay was losing. What a pairing!
We saw Finley’s class as a wrestler here - he was more athletic, quicker, technically superior and a great bumper - it’s no surprise that he had the most lucrative career of all 4 of these guys
Finlay by no metric had a more successful career (including money when inflation is taken into account). He was a decent journeyman with midcard runs in the US (WCW and WWE) and obviously a brilliant wrestler. But he is not woven into the fabric of a nation's culture. Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks are iconic and will be names that crop up for many years past our own time. Wrestling in America is not the be all and end all. Especially back when World of Sport was watched by millions every Saturday here in the UK. How many buildings did Finlay sell out? None, no one paid to see Finlay... Everyone on the British circuit paid and watched TV to see Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks. Even Finlay would tell you these facts, they were the marquee names he never was.
This is the Best quality wrestling. So much better than the American junk we have to put up with now. Someone thinks that some of the U.S. Wrestlers (Bill Goldberg was mentioned.) Could tear apart the World Of Sports stars. Does anyone else disagree with that? Could Bill Golberg take Big Daddy and Haystacks out? Drop comment to let me know
Interesting you mentioned Goldberg. There was an incident a few years back when he was paired with Blackpool's very own William Regal who used to wrestle on World Of Sport when younger. Although he had been told to lose the match, Regal decided to have some fun first. He put Goldberg (who was being heavily-promoted at the time) in all sorts of armlocks and you could tell the American was shit worried as he didn't have a clue how to get out of them.
Horses for courses. Daddy and haystacks wrestled that way because it suited their size and characters, you couldn't have a 40 stone man doing top rope moves!
All gone now, including Paula and the ref - apart from Finlay. MCDonald playing Mr. Nice Guy? Surely not? Yet another tag bout not reaching 10 minutes!
Shall I tell you the shame of this all? Haystacks was a much nicer man in reality, to Big Daddy. Daddy was a self absorbed money grabbing cretin who literally wrote the script for these bouts (Big Daddy & partner go a fall down after partner gets battered and then in pantomime style, makes it back to tag Daddy who gets the equalising fall and then the opponents refuse to fight on) With his brother referring, they literally ran wrestling! It's a shame Haystacks' pathetic script wasn't torn up and he be allowed to be the good guy for once..I hated Daddy and his pathetic acting with a passion

For American fans a Stone is roughly 14 lbs. US, so Giant Haystacks at 42 Stone equals about 588 lbs give or take

It was because British wrestling did treat it like boxing with rounds and counts for knockdowns.
