WOOOOAAAh so much fun!! so well explained... I followed your instructions just like that and suddenly I was doing this super cool thing, like magic... you're the best.
Dr Bop, thank you for sharing. My band does not want to be just a standards band, we want to do more. We are a jazz band, so want to keep it in jazz style. We have decided to do St Thomas. Your video is a help to me. I will not be playing it exactly as you did, but clearly you have influenced me and I appreciate the help. Keep swinging!
Thank you so much for your valuable and insightful comment on the content of my video. I value all comments and this example sure contextualizes the notion of cultural identity in a paradigm of contemporary jazz music in 1950's America better than most. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Just for those that want to know the difference. All it is is that the first two notes played with the hands are displaces one eighth note back. Dr Bop starts playing the tom and snare on the 1 +, whereas Roach starts it on the + 2. That's the only difference. Gives it a more bouncy syncopated feel. The foot pattern is the same as is the floor tom, but the first tom and snare are played on + 2, instead of 1 +. Hope that helps anyone wanting the know Roach's version.
Hey thanks for the comment. I am glad that you have taken the time and effort to watch. Utube is a great platform for sharing ideas. However you have not advanced our knowledge with your comment. I welcome and will gladly accept any video response showing revisions or corrections. In the meantime I am certain that intelligent people will do their own listening and thinking. I look forward to your video corrections. Keep swinging Dr.B
Thanks Dr Bopper , few of us tried St Tom last night in pub OM what a disaster it was tho , lol , fabulous drummin m8 , you've given me some gr8nideas , Many thanks . Kev 👍
I for one found this useful. Who really cares if his approach is exactly like Max Roach? It's jazz and that means that you can play a variation on whatever has done before, right? This stuff the he's playing here seems like it'll definitely wok in the context of the song and that's what really matters. He's really just giving you a conceptual framework for how to approach the song and he's doing a pretty good job of it I think.
Still very nice! I had private drumlessons till 2013 from Winnie Mensink (Amsterdam) for 6 years. That is how I discovered you. Why dont you restart lessons? Best regards from Axel (14 yrs from Holland).
Hey! Thanks for the comment. Remember I am demonstrating what Max Roach played on a particular track (St. Thomas) and some starting points on how to get there. It is not my intention to present a definitive "authentic" calypso, Though the track is desrcibed as "calypso": Apologies for any confusion. Dr.Bop.
Офигеть! Кучу видосов посмотрел, а когда увидел как тут акценты на квартолях разложены всё осознал! Буду носить фотку доктора боба у сердца, как икону 🙏🏻
OK, maybe Dr.BOP made a slip up saying 'I'm going to share with you what Max played' - because it suggests he was going to do the exact beat. I think Max played it a little different - a click followed by a rim shot and then the beat on just one tom. But he does say later, "don't copy Max, make it your own"... It's still a cool groove! Search for St. Thomas in youtube - there are dozens of different versions and NO ONE plays it just like Max, in fact often they play it totally different...
While it isn't the Calipso Roach played on Rollins' St Thomas it IS A Calipso and could work with St Thomas so it's still cool and could work with that song, just a different version than the one Max played.
You have a great enthusiasm for drums and present your information well. However, please don't advertise this as "...what Max played on St. Thomas." If you and the other viewers listen to the track carefully, you'll notice several key differences, namely the bass drum only playing the down beat, and the cross rhythm between the snare rim knock and floor tom. Hopefully I'll be able to post a video soon in response to this comment.....Thanks.
yeah, with your left hand you go as if you're about to do a side stick but don't actually get it on the rim, keep it on the head of the drum and it will make that dead sound... that's how i know it, at least. the rest of it is cool for the most part... playing could be much more in sync and confident, dr. bop...
Dr.B0P you should go back to the original recording and play along with max. You will realize you are wrong. All drummers please don't learn this groove it isn't entirely correct.
Thank you for your generosity in both teaching drums and grace in dealing with one's critics.
I can't believe you guys! This man knows how to teach drums and should be applauded.
drBOP, just ignore the trolls. Your material speaks for itself.
Thank you so much for the lesson. You are well spoken, patient, insightful and a great educator! Cheers mate! 😊
You are absolutely right! Amendment to follow.
Max is the man! Only got to see him once, but it will stay with me.
Keep the faith!

Dr.Bop.
Where can we find the original/how to play St. Thomas groove?

Well played
cool!
This reminds me of the train beat.
what kind of rhythm it is or how I can call that pace?
It comes from the 'Calypso'
Hey, I dig what your doing, but! I think you have the tom pattern backwards, but It's still a cool way to do St Thomas.
I dont really care what the name of the video was that was good stuff

everything about that kit sounds terrible
this is torrible...he is a terrible drummer and this is not what max roach did at all...good try Dr.BOP
