Billy used a particular version of the Big Muff. Eye See Pi is a recreation of that version of Muff Why he used a Russian style Muff for Cherub Rock though....?
That white guitar is a Billy Corgan signature Strat. I had one of those and to this day I still regret selling it. It was a damn masterpiece of guitar.
Can't believe that you can't even buy a hard tail strat from Fender or Squire nowadays without paying for the custom shop. It makes it harder to build your own piece by piece. Take a look at what people are selling their replica Billy Corgan Strats for online, its insane!
My 2¢: i've found that with Lace Sensors and a Big Muff PI you're 95% there. This video is killer, though. Lots of great pedals. That MXR Uni-vibe is gold.
This was actually pretty solid. 2 changes I'd make: -use a strat with lace sensor pickups, not hot rails -use a big muff, ideally the op-amp version (EHX just released a new one they designed w Billy Corgan) Good job overall though, def nailed the pumpkins vibe
The background guitar in "1979's" chorus was actually an acoustic guitar ran through some small sounding amp with minor distortion and this gave it that floating harmonic sound when he strums the A chord in the "shake these zipper blues" part. You can hear it here in their FX track along with Billy's vocal effects as well. ua-cam.com/video/XBcWAydqtow/v-deo.html
Some of these were decent, but as with the QOTSA sounds (Troy Van Leeuwen said the same thing), too much fizzy gain. When layering guitars, less is more.
Another trick is to layer open chords using the same riff on top of power chords, like on "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". It opens up so much more sonically.
Agreed. Would be cool to know how they got their fuzzy tones on Stargasm/Curl of the Burl or their more conventional heavy tones like on their newer albums.
Yeah, I would’ve loved to have seen how they got that cool phaser effect (My guess is probably an MXR Phase 90 but seeing what they would’ve chose would also be cool)
This is your best Sound Like video . Everything was so spot on . Since you seem to have that pumpkin sound nailed what reverbs would you use to get that Siamese Dream “ dreamy sound” think Soma and Mayonnaise? Thanks for your time
There is a huge difference between 'sounding like' and just playing the song. In this case, you're just playing the songs and don't sound anything like the actual recordings at all.
EHX has re-issued the op amp big muff pi. it'as available now for about 80 bucks. And billy says they got it right. buy it. use a modern low noise strat with lace sensors or noiseless pickups. stick it into low gain on your amp. Tweak the big muffs tone knob until it sounds RIGHT. there you go. add on a phaser when needed. done. :)
Can you guys do a video on How to sound like AFI? Jade has always done some interesting stuff and has a great collection of gear he's used through the years
I think every tone here was spot on pretty much; considering Billy used to layer like 24 guitar tracks in the studio, nailing the tones with just a few pedals is even more impressive
Really great vid! Thx, Reverb! I still got a specific question: you used the Strymon Deco for tape flanging on the cherub rock solo. Are there (cheaper) alternatives to a Strymon deco to achieve that typical sound with which the solo starts?
You do however need to use a Les Paul or something with humbuckers in unison with the strat as it fills out most of the low end and adds a warmer tone that Billy's thinner strat cuts through
Billy famously used Stratocasters, but for 1979, at least in the official video, it sounds like a warmer, humbuckier, less-jangly, less-glassy sound. Edit: In the official video at ua-cam.com/video/4aeETEoNfOg/v-deo.html, it looks like Iha is playing a Danelectro, but that could be just for looks.
Really demonstrates how important multi-tracking is to the Smashing Pumpkins sound.
Yeah man the layer's of sound, gave them the whirling wall of guitar sounds.
cause Butch Vig
Cherub Rock is Big Muff, Big Muff, Big Muff, and more Big Muff...The whole "Siamese Dream" album is, really.
In particular, the Op Amp Big Muff. I just bought one and it sounds amazing. Definitely NOT disappointed.
@@scottudell7202 Exactly! I just picked one up and it’s amazing
And mxr phase 100 classic throaty phasing
@@scottudell7202 nope, o think it’s a Russian for cherub rock surprisingly
How to sound like The Smashing Pumpkins with 36 guitars
No dude, you can do that with one Strat, just change amp and pickup config for each overdub
@@АрсенийЧемырысТВ it was a joke on Billy Corgan saying he used 36, unless the video says this is old af
XD
@@АрсенийЧемырысТВ learn how to take a joke idiot
Why not just use a Big Muff for the Big Muff sound?
Billy used a particular version of the Big Muff. Eye See Pi is a recreation of that version of Muff
Why he used a Russian style Muff for Cherub Rock though....?
drmeandad yeah why they used a Russian when it's well noted he used an Op Amp muff didn't make sense to me either.
Because the idea is to get that tone using pedals (I think).
Omer Carmona big muff is a pedal. What are you talking about?
RhythmGrizz That was to the guy who talk about an OP amp something.
How to sound like Billy corgan is really just like grow 6 arms and play four guitars at once lol
True
step one: form a band step two: record an album and play all of the instruments yourself
kinda shows how important the drums were to that band.
The SickNeeds oh hell yeah jimmy chamberlin is definitely one of the best drummers of all time
Jimmy's drum is as important as Billy's guitar to differentiate pumpkins from the other alternative bands of that era
Yeah, Jimmy Chamberlain is a beast on drums
Yeah...drums are usually important, especially in rock bands.

get the op amp reissue.
... what unfortunate timing for this video. If you had just waited one more week!
Not bad at all, it would've been cool to see "Today" on here, because that's one of the Pumpkins' most iconic tunes
That’s just big muff
Do Slowdive
This was actually pretty solid. 2 changes I'd make:

I'm pretty sure the white strat is the Billy Corgan signature model which sounds very pumpkinsy.
NAILED the solo on "Cherub Rock"
@Dwarf From The North sounded pretty damn good to me
Agreed
Didn’t nail it but kinda close.
FINALLY AND THE TONES ARE ACTUALLY DECENT ON THIS VID! Lil excited soz. Good job Reverb x
Great video! The Beatles part 2/ The Strokes next?

How to sound like television!
best band ever the only problem is that they didnt even use pedals hahaha. fender guitar going straight into fender amp = television
Alec Morgan absolutely! It'd make an interesting video for both of those reasons!
Major Biggles you may have a point there mister biggles
Do you happen to own Tom Verlaine's hands? Then it can't be done
Dan Orkin they tour with vox Amos, because you can alter the voltage in the amp itself, without having to carry extra equipment.
I have been waiting for this video for ever!
Do How to Sound like My Blood Valentine! Although I think it would be pretty difficult to do with just a handful of pedals...
Just spend your life savings on every pedal being sold on Guitar Center
Yamaha spx 90 for the reverse reverb and a fender blender for the fuzz tones and you're good ;) oh and a jazzmaster with the tremolo might help too
turn your washing machine on high
I thought that said Bullet For My Valentine for a moment
now i am upset :(
Keely loomed lol
awesome! Sound like "The Verve" plsss
Nice video. How to sound like Oasis would it be nice too.
ibanez tube screamer. all you need for classic oasis crunch
Get some metal on! Like mastodon that's would be cool
Agreed. Would be cool to know how they got their fuzzy tones on Stargasm/Curl of the Burl or their more conventional heavy tones like on their newer albums.
Damn, Cherub Rock solo sounded amazing
Wow brilliant cherub rock solo! One of my favourites ever
How to sound Like Pearl Jam pls!!
Soda Stereo!
Mats Larts Yessss. Click here, you won't regret it one bit.
Soda Stereo for gods sake!
Yes a million times
oh man! thanks!
do Ruban Nielson (UMO) next
No mayonnaise!
Sir this is a Taco Bell. We don't serve mayonnaise.
Yeah, I would’ve loved to have seen how they got that cool phaser effect (My guess is probably an MXR Phase 90 but seeing what they would’ve chose would also be cool)
Really enjoying this stuff, Zero sounded awesome. Would love a vid on sounding like Korn or MBV!
smashing pumpkins sound
1. fender stratacaster
2. big muff
3. marshall jcm800 i think that’s what it’s called
4. mxr phaser
5. digitech whammy pedal
6. shred like hell
7. have fun!
the op amp big muff and a 70's Strat or a Strat with Lace Sensors for the sound
Oooh, that heavy metal machine sound! That is one of my favourite Pumpkin songs that most have now forgotten about.
do the stooges
awesome awesome awesome :D
1:10 Holy shit that was spot on
the dimarzio pickups help a lot as well. i own and love them
Cherub rock was fucking perfect, solo too
Totally not on the solo
No, the solo wasn’t played correctly. Seemed like it was just improvised on the fly tbh
Heavy Metal Machine live in a small venue was one of the greatest concert experiences ever...well, experienced.
Do DIIV next!!!
5 reverbs all at max through a roland amp
Oasis and Placebo please!!! :)
Joe you are amazing!
Hearing 1979 even in a pedal demo just makes me feel like I'm at a funeral 😔 😢
It's really about the hands and how you play more than anything.
MXR Dist+>EHX Opamp reiussue works for me.
Boss MO-2 for the synth-solo sound. Distortion>Muff is tricky tho. You need headroom.
You guys told me you'd do Jack White/The White Stripes a long time ago.
I'm still waiting.
MLG Twinkie No he doesn't.
Reverb's version of heavy metal machine sounds, dare I say this, better, than the original.
That's so cool thanks!
man you guys totally nailed it! when Zero kicked in I thought I was listening to the real thing!
Great job!
He's way off on the Zero bass line.
This is your best Sound Like video . Everything was so spot on . Since you seem to have that pumpkin sound nailed what reverbs would you use to get that Siamese Dream “ dreamy sound” think Soma and Mayonnaise? Thanks for your time
H9 is the only thing peep eddie Clark's channel and cover of soma
I know this was done before it was reissued, but now you can just get the Op Amp Big Muff. It's the exact pedal they used and costs roughly $80.
I bought this pedal 2 weeks ago, 100%. Plug in, turn it on and boom, Siamese Dream comes out of your speaker.
@@xtian_stw I have it as well, really enjoy using it.
Yeah, Cherub Rock!!
now the is accurate, unlike the Nirvana one lmao
Yes! So glad this finally happened! I'm waiting for Pearl Jam potent pairings now!

Beatles 2nd part..................-.-
please tell me the settings for the strymon deco in cherub rock solo!
More like how to sound like the smashing pumpkins using boutique pedals that some people can't even afford.
do my bloody valentine next
I think every tone here was spot on pretty much; considering Billy used to layer like 24 guitar tracks in the studio, nailing the tones with just a few pedals is even more impressive
Can you make a smashing pumpkins pt 2 and make a how to sound like too black sabbath
Really great vid! Thx, Reverb!
I still got a specific question: you used the Strymon Deco for tape flanging on the cherub rock solo. Are there (cheaper) alternatives to a Strymon deco to achieve that typical sound with which the solo starts?
The deco is worth the money, its so versatile.... buy used for 240
not really honestly.
You do however need to use a Les Paul or something with humbuckers in unison with the strat as it fills out most of the low end and adds a warmer tone that Billy's thinner strat cuts through
We need a Corgan reacts
i always really really wonder what pedal / fx use for the intro "by starlight" can someone help me please?
Please.... Thin Lizzy !! or UFO
Sounds close, but you're using the wrong stuff, it'd be nicer to show what they ACTUALLY used. But I already know so there.
What was used for the electric guitar on Crush?
is that signature billy corgan strat or just a strat with hot rails
Why not use the MI Audio Crunch box? JHS Angry Charlie is just a part for part clone. (With, of course, no credit given to MI Audio)
didn't Billy use a flanger for Crush? Its the same sound in Rhinoceros
The effect for the chorus in the everlasting gaze would be great to see.
Damn.. this was the worst sound like pum0kins video Reverb has done.... the video for the OP amp clone was way better.
Billy famously used Stratocasters, but for 1979, at least in the official video, it sounds like a warmer, humbuckier, less-jangly, less-glassy sound. Edit: In the official video at ua-cam.com/video/4aeETEoNfOg/v-deo.html, it looks like Iha is playing a Danelectro, but that could be just for looks.
.........cherub rock sounds good!!
STROKES!
I take that back. I bought the Fat Sandwich Distortion and its relitively close to the big muff. You just need a fuckton of distortion
Would? you please do Alice In Chains next?
I can get a fuzz sound with just a distortion and boss eq
Is that a new finish-colour for the Billy Corgan Signature Strat? I searched it in Google but nothing...
didn't sound like pumpkins at all. maybe the cleans, but that's it. I can do better with a cheap Boss MS50.
Its missing whammy pedal for the solo of zero
How to sound like "A Perfect Circle" !
No respectable vibe player would ever use a Univibe. It's literally the worst version of that pedal.
Please tell us how to emulate the feedback of his guitar with the microphonic pickups, that he used in Mayonaise and other tracks.
"Potent Pairings" the best.
Do The War on Drugs!
Brilliant! Next :Tool and NIN
"Crush", "Cherub Rock" and "Heavy Metal Machine" were pretty much exact. Should have used that Lace Sensor Strat for all of it though
Solo what's with overpriced muff clone when they just used regular and open amp muffs?
please do HUM on electra 2000 record
Well done Reverb. Seriously this sounds fantastic!
There is an EHX nano big muff op amp painted like a pumpkin exactly for the Smashing Pumpkins and never used it. Cmon please
