- The graphic Slow Motion Video shows the "BIG LICK" gait with EIGHT POUND SHOES and CHAINS hitting sensitive skin above horse's front hooves.
This is the 15.2 And Under Amateur Class at the Western NC AG Center in Ashville, NC on Oct. 5, 2018.
Native Tennessean MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) Horse Science Professor Equine Vet Dr. John Haffner says: "the “Big Lick” is a business built on the suffering and pain of horses. The fact is the big lick can only be accomplished by soring. When one soring technique becomes detectable, another one is developed. The big lick is a learned response to pain and if horses have not been sored, they do not learn it.”

it is illegal. the competition is legal, but SORING which is the main method of abuse, is illegal. but theres many many other things that they do that should be illegal but arent.

I personally own a Tennessee walking horse but I use her for trail riding and for some lesson kids to ride. NEVER would I EVER be ok with this!!!!!!!!
They’re such peaceful, calm and friendly horses. Their natural gate is beautiful. (Not this torture)
I always thought that extended gate makes him such beautiful trail horses. Just simply floating in front of everybody and it looks like they’re barely moving. 🥰 such amazing animals.
Big Lickers who defend Big Lick remind me of abusive parents before the Child Endangerment Act: "he fell down the stairs, she ran into a door, if you had kids you'd know how clumsy they are." It doesn't take a horse expert to see fear and pain in an animal. This behavior is the very reason we need laws to protect those who are weaker, children, animals, from people who see no wrong in their cruelty. Do you see the chains around their fetlocks? That's called soring. Why, because it's rubbing on very tender skin and it rubs them raw so they pick their foot up in an abnormal way because it hurts. It's cruelty at it's worst. If you see this in person, call Animal Cruelty and report it. Take your cell phones out and film it. Yell at them and disrupt the show. I stopped one by doing that. Save these horses.

U see those chains around those feed that sores their feet on they will pick them up higher. I've heard stories of them putting nails inside of those pads. I heard they was going to creak down on this year's ago. I've been around horses all my life and been to horse show and never understood what was so appealing about that padded class. That destroys a horse.

Even the humans riding them look evil, they all have hallow black eyes and pale skin that shows their cheekbones. They all wear trench coats as well, just chilling.

My moms friend has a ex big lick horse.
He gad horrific looking hooves,he was skinny as all heck,
He had fear in his eyes everytime she even approached him,you couldn’t imagine how he was to hoof touch or farriers.
It took a year,maybe more,to get him to even trust and appreciate touch and hoof care.
It took a year,also maybe more,to get him back to lunging with saddles and bridles. She did this in 2020
He is now a whopping 9 years old,loves to do jumping,loved pats,treats
He’s extremely affectionate to touch and is chill with farriers.
It took 3-4 years for him to get here,all because some stupid people did big lick on him for 1-2 years.
I hate big lick because of this horse.
I hated it before,and hate it even more.
I hate how this is in my state I feel like it’s my fault and I have to fix it now

i don’t understand how any human being or living person could ever think that its ok for a horse to walk like that. the “big lick” is one of the most abusive things i have ever seen. i am an equestrian, and while there are plenty of healthy, beautiful and strong horses out there, I have seen my fair share of abused, weak or starved animals and it’s not OK.😢😭💔
these are the saddest parts about being an equestrian . understanding that not all of us are good and some of us treat our horses like they don’t have rights or that they’re just machines that can work 24 seven and horses don’t function like that. I think that every horse just needs plenty of love and care.❤

This needs to stop horses are not allowed to be treated like this. If you own a horse treat it with care and respect. The stuff horses do for you like let you ride them and pet them. Even owning them is a privilege. You need a proper home for them if thats in a barn/stable or a felid or something. You need to feed and water them you need to brush them. Take proper care of them. people that do big lick idk how you have the heart to do that. TREAT YOUR HORSES WITH RESPECT PLEASE 🙏🏻.

to tell if a horse has been big licked you can look at the legs, if its thinner than the hoof then its big licked. or you can look at how the horse gallops.

i personally think riding is just inhumane anyway, there is a lot of abuse behind getting a show horse to be a show horse in many different shows. not saying everyone abuses their horses but it’s common. i think sports should be human and human only. but this, this is unsettling and horrifying. i want to puke watching this. the horses look like they are in agony.

I heard that sometimes they put chemicals like gasoline on the horses hooves
I wrote this comment somewhere else but this is called big lick it is when you put blocks of wood on your horse and the block has nails in it and sometimes glass and it hurts the horse and makes it walk pretty (even tho I think the walk is ugly)
