For no particular reason whatsoever, I thought I would do something a bit different from reviewing one singular piece, and instead take a look back at multiple cartoons and films which protest the act of war.

Isn’t established titles fake or something?
I honestly find anti war (or war themed in general) cartoons are very interesting to me. I can’t explain why but it’s an interesting theme to explore for me
It's also most likely due to the non-censorship nature of the topics that most cartoons are restricted from talking about. It's a weird merger of the fantastical world of cartoons and the reality and chaos of our own. Also, it's interesting to figure what message they're trying to make, sometimes subconsciously or explicitly since it's all made with that purpose.
At least, that's why they're particularly interesting to me as well...
The thing I find interesting is that humans are so against war, but it's basically all we do.
And if not that, we're so violent against everything that goes against our beliefs that it's like why do we want peace, but choose violence to get our way?
@@QuindianaJones if anything, we like to progress, and I guess there are some people who like to progress so much that they don't take the time to look back. Back at their past actions, and back at themselves to see what
they've become and where they came from.
I also just sometimes think "wow, these people honestly don't have the right to live" but who knows, they all have their own small or grand reasons.

Authoritarians like hitler, putin, etc don't want war but they want to win and take over others. They much prefer the opposing side to surrender.
People being attacked don't want war but they don't want to be killed or bombed or enslaved, so they have no choice but to fight.
It's very simple really. You can easily tell victims to just give in to avoid war.
Whether it be the bravado, the brotherhood, the lack of petty drama, or those just intimate and visceral "Welcome to hell" scenes like the Umbara landing in clone wars, or the D-Day landing in Saving Private Ryan.
Funnily enough, Peace on Earth is one of my childhood traumas. At the time, Cartoon Network would host Looney Tunes marathons on the weekends. Here I am, watching each short back to back, and finally Peace on Earth was the final one they showed. Left me stunned for a few hours as I was expecting Bugs and Daffy antics, but instead got very dark, very real feeling look at war. Mankind wiping itself out was I think my first brush with existential horror and I was around 8. Probably a factor in why I watch your reviews, Steve.

I remember watching this when I was around 6-10, but I never knew what it was called (Because how do you expect an autistic child with a poor attention span to understand much of what's going on half the time), but I remember this one because of how haunting and sad it was, especially the last two men shooting at each other until they both died

Here's an interesting bit of additional history. It wasn't until after WWI that people's view of war drastically shifted to it being a terrible thing because of how utterly devastating it was. WWI changed EVERYTHING we thought we knew about warfare. Before WWI, wars were things to be excited about because it was an opportunity for the everyman to make something of themselves. To gain fame through their prowess in battle, to gain wealth for capturing enemy nobles or leaders, and to earn land and titles through their deeds. War used to be something that some, not all, people were eager for because it was a way to become something more.
I remember this quote, and I don't know who said it, "When WWI was declared, people cheered. When WWII was declared, people wept." It really just goes to show how quickly our cultures changed their views with the introduction of weapons of mass destruction and with the way things are going I can't help think of Einstein's quote.

Well, there is always an ebb and flow for these things. The WWI generation hadn't had a major catastrophic war in generations. The Russo-Japanese War and US Civil War were put away as not professional soldiers and therefore without much to learn. Crimea, Franco-Prussian War, and the Balkan Wars were smaller nations fighting older nations for short amounts of time. There was no reference.
The generations a century before were not for a glorious war in the least. The Napoleonic Wars saw an exhausted Europe trying to fit peace after a full generation of slaughter. Their lessons were forgotten because well young people never learn from the past.
@@als3022 True. I could have worded that a little better, it's not like everyone was excited for a war to happen. Just that when they did it was typically seen, by the younger generations more commonly, as something glorious. Something that "could" change your life forever and that idea is what so many chased throughout history, and it wasn't until WWI that we were all hit collectively with a pretty big reality check with just how brutal it is. How there are no winners, just survivors who'll carry those scars for surviving such things for the rest of their lives.

As "profound" as that quote is, it's just stupid. WWIII will have mass destruction but not to the point that it will affect all the countries.
As a german I really appreciate that they seemingly used actual german speaking people for the dub of that one animation (sorry, I forgot the name) which is following Hans. My only complain about it is that in 8:17 it shows a kind of punishment that I connect strongly with american school because in Germany, corporal punishment was much more common up until the 60's. Heck, my dad (born '63) told me about all his time his old teachers or my Gran would beat him up with a ruler or a belt and make him count the hits because he liked to play pranks on other people.
It's called "Hitler's Children: Education for Death" (sometimes just Education for Death)
The beatings were also common in Western schools,but it was a common visual signifier for being made to feel stupid

The first video game (a tennis game similar to Pong) wouldn't be invented for 15 years, and there are still 19 states which use corporal punishment today including Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, and Indiana; and that's only talking about public schools. If we include private schools then only 2 states don't engage in corporal punishment, those being New Jersey and Iowa
I'm pretty sure this was done in American schools too. Because I do remember old school cartoons, some that don't really have to do with war by the way, where kids would get their ass whooped with a ruler. I mean hell, we still have that in some recent 2000 films. Though you're more likely to see it more in films having to do with characters in a Christian school or Catholic school or whatever it's called.
Plus, I remember people my family from the older generation talking about how they remember kids used to get paddled in school when they were bad. I don't know, maybe it just depends on the school in the area. I have no idea. I definitely never experienced it. But between school cultural jokes in film and media and the experiences of those I'd heard from in my own family, clearly this is something that at least happen at one point in time in American school history. At least in some schools in some places if not everywhere.
So after a quick double check, I am correct. This is something that used to be done in a lot of schools. And apparently, supposedly from those I've heard just now, some places in Texas still do.
Otherwise their form a punishment would be put in a kid in a corner. Sometimes with books that they have to hold in their hand until their punishment is over. Never would have a dunce cap though. I'm not sure where that came from.

I feel that Disney should grow a pair like WB and rerelease many of the stuff they’re trying to bury but adding a disclaimer pointing out it was made in different times.
Also regarding Education for Death, imagine if Walt Disney did a sequel set during the Nuremberg Trials.
I wonder if they did a sequel would Hans wake up and realise what he did or would he remain loyal to the party?

I feel the same way. Disney keeps hiding some of their more controversial material, when they should just put a disclaimer on their older films and say that it was from a different time period. I feel like hiding controversial material like this is like saying that these events never happened.
@@AnimationBliss Disney + has the disclaimer for movies like Peter Pan, Pocahontas, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp and the like. If they feel bad about movies like Aladdin and Pocahontas, I don't think we're going to see Donald Duck has a nightmare that he's a Nazi cartoon anytime soon.
@@Capydapy Which is still kind of our main problem; Disney's selectiveness when it comes to content that is seen as highly problematic for today's standards.. Sometimes they put a disclaimer on their stuff, sometimes they just completely sweep stuff like the WWII cartoons, or Song of the South under the rug... Pick a lane!(Though to be fair, non of the more iffy stuff from WB's backlog or Grave of Fireflies is on HBO Max...)

Here is a cartoon franchise with a strong anti-war message: the Transformers. You can see it just from the basic plot summary. Two factions get trapped in an endless war that lasts for countless years until they eventually waste all their honeworld's resources and are forced to leave from their home, essentially turning themselves to refugees, only to end up getting stranded on another planet and get its inhabitants trapped in their conflict.
The Transformers franchise has been going strong since the 80's. My favorite incarnations are Transformers Animated and Transformers Prime.
Actually... you're pretty on point. A lot of later continuities double down on the subtle political aspect of the series lore too, including subtle references to communism, classism, elitism and other things. Like this franchise did not have to go off in the way it did but it did and I'm both proud and extremely shocked.

having watched all the old transformers from the original ones up to the beginning of Victory, i can't say i've felt much "message" out of the episodes aside from "buy our toys"-
but to be fair, i could believe the slightly later seasons may have focused more on story and characters, and the conflict as you mention?
-i have very vague memories of the Unicron Triology from my early childhood. and while i barely remember any of it, it did leave quite an impression, and was the original reason i started watching through the franchise so i could eventually refresh my memory of it and then view the more recent stuff.
@@Konani_the_unicorn_queen transformers Prime, the comics, Animated and other incarnations do have a stronger anti war message, Transformers prime having their homeward dead from the war and their race scattered, animated showing some themes of the autobots having a militaristic and xenophobic society and Ratchet the war vet always bitter about how the war is glorified and subtly showing how the younger bots like Bee and Optimus have been influenced by the propaganda, the main characters in general being the underdogs to the elitists in power, and the comics go into some pretty dark themes like classism, racism, colonialism and heavy genocide, the wreckers saga is especially good at showing how much war sucks. And the shattered glass 2021 comics showing what happens when the autocratic warlords take over cybertron. And the cybertron games showing biological warfare destroying the planet and the autobots being absolutely decimated.
For years, I had remembered as a child, seeing that scene from "Peace On Earth" of the soldier being shot and sinking into the mud, but could not remember for the life of me where I had seen it, or what the short was. Thank you, Steve for unlocking this memory. And for putting the spotlight on these harder subjects during this time! ❤

The final episode of Dinosaurs also had a strong Anti-Nuke message.
That was more of an environmental message than anti-nuke but I see where you're coming from
Yeah, maybe this have a environmental message and try to make a fun thing about how dinosaur goes to extinctin to explain for the kids why theses characters are not with them in the real life, but truly the show could have finished otherwise hard a better grade...

There was a 2 part episode called "Nuts to War" that was a incredibly thinly veiled, yet devastating condemnation of the at the time Gulf War. Just swapping out oil for pistachios.
I remember watching the Peace on Earth short on TV when I was a kid. 9/11 had recently happened and I think it just popped up on Cartoon Network. Me and my brothers were about to turn it off, but our dad said something like "Hold on, you should watch this, it's important." That scene with the last two men on Earth fighting to the death stuck in my mind for years.

Also a film recommendation: Wolf Children. It’s a Japanese animated film released in 2012. It’s both charming yet emotional. It quite fits your channel!

That was the 2nd anime I'd ever watched. I loved till I learned what sex and beastiality were. Now I don't ever watch it.

I get it, but the sexualizations of lola bunny is something people should question, not that movie. Also, since when is werewolves mating with humans beastiality? He has a human form, so she's not just fucking a wolf. Not to mention, he gave consent, and he is intelligent just like a human. Bascally just more furry. I can only think of that loveplot in the withcer where the girl dated whatver that guy wa sand eveyone was pissed about ut becu as s he wasnt human. He is human quite often. Yeah, he kissing his wolf form was weird tho.

I’m glad that these kinds of content exists, it’s easy to say “let’s send a couple A-10s to do a strafing run” or “let’s just send troops there” without knowing the full brutality of war, but if everyone had the same feelings that combat veterans feel then I’m sure the world would be a better place

I remember when I was a little kid. I watch that cartoon when it showed the last human being killed in the Great War and animals took over, using the old equipment that humans use to destroy each other to create a new way of living.
what i wonder is how the hell those animals got the idea of peace from the bible. while genocide and slavery are a good thing in that book. even telling people how to sell their daughter as a sexslave and who can be a slave and how to treat them😂😂

I saw the holiday short subject flick and it was a frightening experience of war. War ever sloves anything whatsoever.

I remember seeing Peace on Earth as a kid on Cartoon Network. I don't remember all the details, but I do remember the stark contrast between the cute little woodland creatures than the brutality of the soldiers.
There's an animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book "The Butter Battle Book" that's somewhat in the vein of the matchstick film. It's a little rough but I think it's good.
I'm rather surprised Steve didn't cover that one.

But what i find pretty dark about both the book and the animated short is the open ending where we see the Yook boarder patrol officer holding in his hand a small but powerful atomic bomb and we then see the General of the Zook army Van Itch holding an identical bomb in his hand and the open ending really does give you goosebumps and thinking what happened next as you may think if both sides ended up getting killed

Green Eggs and Ham had their second season centered around the Butter Battle Book.
Suggestion: Restart the Earth.
It's a Chinese sci-fi film, and is live action. I know you usually do animated films, but you have done live action in the past. It's pretty much a story about how humans attempted to save earth by creating a drug that would save plants, but the drug works *too* well, resulting in plants taking over the world, and humans becoming endangered. Kind of like Bird Boy.
Another suggestion is Wolfwalkers, an animated 2020 film. It's about the Ireland version of werewolves, and has gorgeous animation, even compared to Studio Ghibli.
Transformers and Avatar: The Last Airbender are two shows that also have anti-war elements to them

Yeah, just a shame that The Last Airbender universe is become like most of the franchise, the specific kind that begin really good, imaginative and almost perfect but become who has aged badly, really disapointing, bad taste, and just concentrate on the capitalisation of the franchise to get more money. And mostly cause of the sequels and others tuff.
(The Legend of Korra is absolutely not a bad, terrible and insulting show towards the first show, at least at the start and during most of his diffusion with his first 3 season, because at the very end/final straight (and worse, it in term of seconds i speak here), the show just become complete shit because he make a truly bad decision about LGBT representation who out of nowhere and not really in equation with the main character. In fact, the 4th season is not bad and exempt of forces and goods ideas but can go completely without any problem without his main eponym character so he badly use, treated and uselessly edited and which do not correspond and do not fit the character (especially the things the producers made to his hairstyle ! my god) in order to make things more complex, interesting or something like that (it's chaotic and not very understandable in fact), but for the worse alas. I will precise to have LGBT character is not a bad thign and not a thign to prohibit, but the representation must be good in her introduction, presentation, use and have a least a little level of sens when iit's put on mains and regulars characters. Because when producers think they just to put like that, simply without thinking one second people like that with any context, evolution or tease beforehand, in order that we evolve at the same time as the thing by looking at it and that we accept it as it is, and just to said that they progressives and that they agree with these minorities when it could be quite the opposite in reality behind the scenes (and that suddenly they "protect" themselves by precaurion in advance), the results are and will NEVER be a good case/example and even a great pejorative and stereotyping most often example towards the first interested communities in question.
If someone will see and watch true good representations of LGBT characters, see The Dragon Prince Netflix's serie, The Owl House Disney's show or others show like Clarence or Steven Universe from Cartoon Network. Theses representations in these show in particular, I love them all !
So yes, maybe a correct show for the beginning and most of his duration, but a real insult to the entire universe and huge downstep compared to the first show and the 3 first seasons. And worse, the franchise put again many time the knife in the injury with the comics and the other books come out after the second series, which struggles to make up for the mistake and commits more instead. Many will find that the universe revolves too much around LGBT and even promotes it in some aspect. Which is wrong in several ways. It's not a bad thing to want to try new things and diversify, it's just that the universe wasn't basically a rainbow universe like the Masters of the Universe, that he doesn't know anything about it and he simply got it wrong all along where other franchises have at least made good cases or even very successful).
And somes things and elements from the base product who has aged badly with time and the change of mentalities and are leave as is in the open air in decomposition as if nothing had happened (there so numerous that I can really give example, but there a lot of scenaristic or symbolic element that, with recul, dosn't make well, like al the things that Zuko with Azula, this latter not in reality a evil or bad person, just lost. Because that not realy a good pearl of wisdom to solve his problems in fatrie by force, to take advantage without any race of the weaknesses of some and to stupidly think that these are desperate lost cases. In the end, what Zuko done, ihe will always make the bad decision. Azula is a good character, and there was even planned at the base an entire fourth season around her and she have a redemption! And is truly a shame and waste that the show himself be so uselessly bad and rape her so badly at the end. Instead of presenting us with two final fights that explode with fire and explosions everywhere like in an American generic beast action movie, instead, there could have been only as a fight the one between Ozai and Aang which is enough on its own. And between Aula and Zuko, no fight, just a scene where Zuko resigns himself to the fight at the last moment and decides to use the word and to recognize his faults towards them and to say that he understands that he feels the same as her and to allow him to be a good brother (and maybe give him the throne for her) for her as best he can and to help her as best he can, without ever using or manipulating her negatively, so that he and Azula are reconciled and it all shows that the brotherly bonds are stronger and deeper than anything and that they can face any conflict. It's stylish, symbolic and very metaphorical!).
The comics and others books made under the franchise are not bads, at least in their concept ideas, some are even great, but others don't treat and use really well the universe and make bad impact on him.
So yes, it's was a good thing at the start and at the time the universe was made in the 2000s, but today .... it's just "meh".
And about the Transformers franchise.... it's okay about everything, she manage correctly to pass the age without too many problems !
BTW in personnal example of anti-war franchise (or franchise who possess like themes between the ones she have), I can mention the popular best-seller book series "Wings Of Fire" ! by Tui T. Sutherland (one of the author who made the popular Warriors books series !).
It's about a fantastic world, on two continent named Pyrrhia and Pantala, where we follow a bunch of young dragons who are faced again many dangers and try to preserve peace between the differents dragon tribes/species who live in this world. There also magic element and presence of humans (call scavengers by dragon) who is enough important througout the books event.
There 3 cycle composed by 5 book with each book about the point of view and action of one of the dragon of the group :
- the first cycle turn around 5 young dragons, on Pyrrhia, who are in the center of a prophecy and who must stop a war between all the dragosn tribe and created by three dragonesses princess who fight since 20 years for the throne of their dead mothers, the previous queen. The 5 young dragon : Clay the Mudwing, TSunami the Seawing, Gloria the Rainwing, Starflight the Nightwing and Sunny the Sandwing try to face again all the dangers they face off and to make a just balance between their own will to travel around their world and to meet with their family and accomplish their destiny !
- the second cycle turn around 5 dragon students at the new school created by the 5 first ones after the war and return of the peace : Moon the Nightwing, Winter the Icewing, Peril the Skywing, Turtle the Seawing and Qibli the Sandwing. They encounter many antagonsits from the first cycle who try to get their revenge, plus a new one who are a reminescence from an old millenial era and who just wake up to try to conquer the world !
- the third cycle turn around 5 dragon on Pantala with Blue and his sister Selena the Silkwing, Cricket the Hivewing and Drosera the Leafwing, who encounter all of them and decide to try to arrest the Queen of the Hivewing, Waps, who is a dictator who control all her tribe and the entire continent and will destroy the entire world if anything is made against her !
I truly love this universe and his themes : the friendship, the destiny, the acceptance of others despite the differences (and, bonus, the LGBT representation is, for all the cases (8-10 characters in total), beautifully well made !). This universe talk about hard thing like stereotypes, racism and others tuff like this without problem and any fear!
It's truly one of the best franchise and book serie ever made for a child-teenager audience and will coming soon have a 3D adaptation by Netflix with the author herself between the producers !
Gundam too
Dr. Seuss's The Butter Battle Book got an animated adaption by Ralph Bakshi in the 80s and is a fantastic allegory for the Cold War. The ending still sticks with me and I haven't read the book/watched the movie since I was 10.
And I know this isn't the point but was meant to showcase that war is bad but it's pretty funny to think that both the Yook's and the Zook's only started fighting over a little dispute over toast
A favorite anti war cartoon of mine that I discovered not so long ago is called "Polygon". It's of soviet origin and it has a really interesting type of animation.
"Mickey Mouse Goes To Vietnam " looks like a creepypasta
Wizards would be a great addition to this list. Also, while it's not the entire theme, The Wall has a few sections that focus on the devastation of war, with the animated section called "Goodbye Blue Sky" being particularly chilling. (Also a really good song!)

I remember watching 'Waltz with Bashir' with my family when it came out in cinemas - we had to drive 2 hours to watch it in a small indie theatre in my country because it wasn't considered profitable enough to be shown in the more "mainstream" theatres and was only shown select places across the country.
When we left the cinema my mom was crying because she had flashbacks to when she watched the live-action clips shown on the news back in the '80s and how the news correspondent reporting from the area (who according to her was known for being extremely professional when reporting) broke down on live tv because of the meaninglessness of the situation. We had a lot to talk about afterwards.
I was around 17 when this movie came out and I rewatched it when I was around 25. The second time I understood the movie so much better than the first time and noticed things I hadn't before - it's definitely worth a watch and maybe a rewatch or two.
I love that movie, especially because it hit me personally. The movie does an incredible job, even in how it uses color to tell the story.
The scene where the psychologist appears talking about the man who saw everything as a movie and the camera "broke" in front of those horses, is a parallel to the use of animation and the ending with the real images.

You should totally review Jack and the Beanstalk (1974), Fantasia (1940), Ralph Bakshi's animated LOTR, Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure, About Dressy Sally (aka "Clockman"), Rock and Rule, A Christmas Carol (2009), and Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July.
It's really interesting in less than a 20 year difference between the two MGM war films. Peace on Earth 1939 and Good Will to Men 1955 you see how far weapons technology had gotten. From two soldiers shooting each other dead in the trenches to nuclear holocaust.
Suggestion: Tulips Shall Grow. It's not so much of an anti-war message as a "life goes on despite/post-war' one and is maybe a little *too* optimistic, but still worth a watch. It used to be on youtube and probably still is.

I've always found funny that some propaganda cartoons try to dehumanize the other party by making the must mundane jokes like Hitler being compared to... A woman.

It was an interesting selection of shorts, I'll check them! I think you should review Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards". Although it have some apparently contradictions and bizarre goofy stuff, I think it make some good points about war and weapons with unusual animation.
I had to expect such a content in such horrific times. I also need to tell that I live in the country that made Waltz With Bashir, and I’m gonna say it, it actually opened my eyes that in real life, some wars or conflicts has more than 2 sides, and some of them can be even more involved than the main 2 sides of the war or the conflict, yet never even being mentioned. I think it truly is something that we need to take much more into consideration today, since it’s getting much more common.
Two Fun facts about Short Subject (Mickey Mouse in Vietnam):

The first few minutes of the Fist of the North Star movie had a really chilling segment that definitely was anti-nuclear war. I mean it wasn't really the focus of the movie but it left an impression on me.
I remember catching the tail end of Peace on Earth one night as a kid and being seriously shaken by it, but never knowing what it was and being morbidly curious to find out, but never really having the stomach to track it down. That is, until I saw this videos thumbnail and was like “Oh shit there it is!”. Thanks for giving me closure for a childhood memory of an owl telling a story about a soldier melting.
I have a suggestion for stuff to cover. In 1995, Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of Akira, released a 3 part anthology series called memories, and all of them show a general message about memories. All the parts are amazing, and I think you should cover them.

Raymond Briggs also did a book called Ug, in which a caveman kid named Ug attempts to make soft pants to replace the stone ones that they have to live with, much to the scorn of his family. The last page is a timeskip featuring an adult Ug standing next to his parents graves wondering if soft pants will ever exist.

There's a lot of things to say about that one mainly of how this war between the two races the Yook's and the Zook's occurred all because one Rude Zook by the name of Van Itch decided to break the peace by assaulting the Yook border patrol officer that serves as the main character and the whole reason why the two race is despised each other in the first place was just over a little dispute over toast which can show that war can usually start from the most stupid things

I like the setting of this video. These conflicts are not about good vs bad people, but interest fighting each other while the innocens in the middle suffer.

Please review "It's Such A Beautiful Day " by Don Hertzfeld. Don't let the stick figure animation deter you. It accurately depicts brain disorders, like brain tumors, or Multiple Sclerosis.

Movie review suggestion: Everybody Rides the Carousal it’s an animated movie from 1976 about Erik Erikson's eight psychological stages of life from baby to elder. It’s beautifully animated and the audio that is used feels authentic and raw it’s something I feel you’d enjoy and overall would make for a great review
I still recommend you take a look at the 2002 short film, War Game based on a Micheal Foreman novel. The ending is a real gut puncher. I watch it every year on Remembrance Day.
There is a stop motion movie made by Norman McLaren called “Neighbours” that is amazing, even though it is told with a light hearted tone, it has a strong anti war message. I really recommend it

Mobile suit Gundam is one of the popular anime that has strong anti-war message, especially in the 1st one.
People shouldnt have to be convinced war is bad, it always is. War can't always be avoided. Most American wars could be avoided, but Ukraine cant. Propaganda can win wars and save lives. But it can also blind you. It just depends on what you are fighting for.
What about the wars in the middle East and Africa
Actually, if the world were a more ideal place, ALL wars could be avoided. Unfortunately, there are some people out there who don't want to avoid or prevent such conflicts (and, no, they are NOT limited to one country, or one side of a conflict). Some countries, some groups, and some peoples, are just inevitably forced into such terrible events (and, yes, that DOES include the United States...).
Do you know who hates war the most? Is it the politician? Is it the anti-war protestor? No. It is the soldier, the sailor, the airman, the marine - anyone who wears the uniform of his/her country's armed forces. Why? Because those who serve will be the ones who will witness firsthand the true brutality, futility, and evils of war. They are the ones (along with those innocents who get caught in the middle of such disasters) who will see the destruction and death such fruitless endeavors bring.

Well, its a year later and Americans want out of the Ukraine matter. They want funding to Ukraine stopped and are furious over what has become of the billions and equipment Wash DC sent over. Zelensky is no longer viewed as a hero by a good deal of Americans.
It’s so interesting that peace on earth is set in a post apocalyptic future and the anthropomorphic animals are the new intelligent race.
If I can Steve, I recommend the Soviet short film "There will come Soft Rains." Which is based on a Ray Bradbury short story and a poem by Sera Teasdale of the same name.
The way it's animated is absolutely haunting taking place after a nuclear bombing. Leaving only a robotic house and it's AI.
Awesome video Steve! That matches cartoon short sounds really interesting. I like the fact that these anti war cartoons not only show that wars are bad, but that both sides in a war suffers and that the situation is a lot more complex than what we see on the outside.

I actually still haven't been able to bring myself to watch Grave of Fireflies. I've known about it for over 20 years now and I still can't do it.
I did however watch Waltz With Bashir in a small artsy theater. It was dark yeah, but I do recall it got me in a bit of a Public Image Ltd binge afterward.
I have watched several of these old-timey anti-war shorts and feature films. Particularly, "Peace on Earth", "Education for Death" and "Grave of the Fireflies". Though, with the latter, either the director or someone has said it's not really an anti-war film, but rather it portrays how during wartime, everyone suffers whether you're in the front line or just an innocent bystander. I agree with that.
One that I would recommend is a film called "Wizards" released in 1977, directed by Ralph Bakshi. It combines the genres of fantasy, sci-fi, anti-war and post apocalypse. My mom saw it in theaters. I know you reviewed some films by Ralph Bakshi like "Cool World" and "Fritz the Cat", but have you ever considered others such as "Wizards" (as mentioned), "Fire and Ice" and "The Lord of the Rings"? I'm not so sure if I would recommend "Coonskin" for I haven't even gotten through the first few minutes as it seems a bit uncomfortable.
I keep recommending Wizards! It has a special place in my heart as my dad also saw it in theaters when he was young and shared it with my sister and I as we grew up.
Coonskin is a very good movie and you should give it a chance.

I actually read the Barefoot Gen Mangas. They go into more detail and have a slightly more comedic tone to offset all the tragedy, though it is still very dark. It also goes into more detail about the Attitude of Japan during the War, about how the victims of the bombs are people to be shunned because they were now “tainted”
I deeply respect works like Barefoot Gen and Grave if the Fireflies for not only displaying the full horrors of the incendiary and nuclear bombs dropped on Japanese cities, but also criticizing the Japanese military and government that started the war in the first place. Barefoot Gen even alludes to Japanese atrocities and crimes against humanity. In war, it is civilians who suffer the most, as if the average common person were being punished for the unfathomably cruel, gruesome, stupid, hateful, greedy actions of their leaders and soldiers.
"the Conflict" Was most likely using the berlin wall that split east and west germany as reference. It is a cold war piece, so it fits. :3

Edit: now, that I actually think about it, there were a lot of things in Soviet Union accessible for kids, but at the same time being able to terrify a adult man. Like, "Come and see", that you could easily watch on TV, "Lolo the penguin" with massacre of penguins, "There will come soft rains". Was it like our national tradition to fucking obliterate kids' sanity by TV? No wonder my parents and grandparents are so depressive.

I'm kind of surprised the 2002 short film War game wasn't put in The story follows 4 teenagers going through training in England, arrival in France and the trenches, the famous 1914 Christmas truce, and the Battle of the Somme.
I remember Peace on Earth. Maybe that's where my fear of gas masks came from. Really came to bite me with The Empty Child...

Reason and Emotion is one of my favorite Disney shorts. I think it perfectly showcases that Disney is great at drama, comedy, dark themes, and heart, all in one short.
It's set in the aftermath of war but The Breadwinner shows the ripple effect that the Soviet-Iran war had after the Taliban took over. The main character's father was a soldier and lost his leg.
I don't know why but the first animation that you showed is always the first one I think of when anybody asks me about the topic

I don't know if it counts but there's a 1952 Canadian short film called Neighbours which is a combination of life action and stop motion animation. Plot is essentially two neighbours fight over a flower. It ironically won the best documentary short Oscar
A bit of an obscure suggestion here but I'd love to see you cover the 1996 animated adaptation of Under Milk Wood based on Dylan Thomas's radio play of the same name about the lives of the residents of a Welsh fishing village.
It's got excellent poetic narration by Richard Burton as well as some hilarious slice-of-life scenes featuring the strange and sometimes disturbing villagers and a very trippy overall atmosphere that I think you'd appreciate very much. It's available on UA-cam in full, though the audio in the first 3 mins is unfortunately terribly preserved and impossible to decipher. Still absolutely worth the watch.
I have fond memories of watching the first video steve reviewed in here. I'd watch it around christmas with my mum and dad and brother. It was a simpilier time.

Steve. It is nice seeing one, out of many, well decently established reviews from you. But, if I must say.. LOVE this one in particular. As a war buff, these shorts you've shown are very vital to both the mindset of their respective countries and what was circulating about in their respective times. Before sensitivity, especially, on the materials have understandably arose in recent years. American syndication of television actual used to show most, if not, all the shorts shown here (I remembered fondly "Peace on Earth" and it's remake for instance, along with many other shorts that covered wartime). There was, even an interesting moment that Cartoon Network covered the topic and shown.. A bit, of the focal point in the early 2000's. A show called "Toon Heads". But, even better. Was the self discovery of later shorts and films I've never seen. But, thanks to the internet. Mostly, UA-cam, before, ridiculousness aside. I witnessed things such as "Where the Wind Blows" the uncut SNAFU shorts and more. Yes, you definitely struck a cord in me. And I thank you for that. As you stated. War is not a flattering topic. But, what came about it in many formats. Particularly' through propaganda in mediums of yesteryears. Thank you Steve for this memorable amazing and educational coverage. I hope you do more very soon. :)

Giving the issues happening right now (Especially between Russia and Ukrain) we should probably make anti war shows again so people will understand how deviating war can be and encourage others to focus on bringing peace to the world a different way
