    After years of backpacking, mainly in the Highlands, I had only recently found out the benefits of walking poles. They should have been first on the list of gear to take from the very first trip. The amount of strain they take from your legs is significant (particularly uphill/downhill), but when you come to crossing dodgy streams and rivers, being quadrupedal instead of bipedal is a joy to behold. Just my two pennies worth!

    • @stevew2224
      @stevew2224 2 роки тому +1

      Same, and the number of trips, stumbles and falls they helped avoid first time out, so worth it... and for crossing that slightly too wide stream, almost use them to vault over lol

    Thomas, one of the most important photography lessons I've learned is you saying (more than once) how a great view doesn't equate to a great photo. I used to always take the grand view photo and be surprised when it didn't resonate with me later. Now it's easier to sit back, enjoy the time, and any photos are a bonus more so than a requirement for a successful day outside.

    • @ThomasHeatonPhoto
      @ThomasHeatonPhoto  2 роки тому +5

      It's a good piece of advice and it took me a long time to realise it. Equally, something that is innocuous and seemingly boring, can make a great photo 👍

      But if you don’t take it you will never know, the camera captures the image slightly different to the eye. My theory for what it is worth is that you can always delete it but you can never take it tomorrow from home especially now with digital.

    Thomas, please continue to "keep it real" as you mentioned. Amateur photographers like me need to see and know those who do this for a living may also struggle for compositions that are somewhat meaningful, struggle with gear, and can at times make a general hash of things. Thanks for your honesty. It's one of the things that positively distinguishes your channel from many others.

    I love these videos Thomas! It’s like we’re invited to come with to a practice, a training session, the work behind the scenes that keeps the photographer’s mind in shape between the epic portfolio shots. Without these moments, the epic, portfolio shots would be harder to come by. Would be harder to spot, and harder to capture. These are the necessary betweeners! I shut my eyes at the end too . . . . . .hahahaha.

    Hi Tom new subscriber here!
    Can’t believe I’ve just posted a video I shot a couple of weeks ago mentioning this VERY thing about a great view doesn’t always make a great photograph!! My wife always drives me mad by saying oo that looks pretty you SHOULD photograph it 🤦‍♂️ - and I stand there arguing with her that there just ISN’T a composition! I’m a Pro photographer and just starting out on this UA-cam malarky, I love camping so just starting to get out there and make more landscape videos for my new channel. Great video as always (must take you ages!)

    I know you don't do much astrophotography, but have you thought about using the infrared camera for that? You could get some interesting Milky Way images. Maybe an exposure blend so you could expose for the hills just before sundown and another just as it's dark enough to show the Milky Way, both in infrared.

    So, a smattering of early snow in that gorgeous black and white shot, I have to say that i am surprised that it appeared this early in the year. Okay, Okay, Okay, yes I know its IR and that makes the images look different but it does so look as though its a winter scene, wispy clouds against that cold clear sky, patches of snow on those mountains and a glorious carpet of snow in the foreground, if I wasn't aware that the camera was IR I could easily have taken that for a winter scene. Damn fine video Mr Heaton, damn fine indeed.

    I think there were two compositions that could have been made in the evening. First, I would have been sorely tempted to do a focus-stacked image with the curving stream, as the main subject, complimenting the mountains in the background. Second, it might be interesting to try the IR camera late evening after sundown. The rocks of the cliffs facing south and west glow in the dark as they give off the heat they have absorbed during the day. Loved the surprise ending, LOL!
