In the original version, it just sounds like a dream for her. In this, it sounds true, and destined. It's like she's telling them now, instead of imagining it.
"No one knows how far I'll go", "if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go" and "what's beyond that line? Will I cross that line?" suddenly have a way darker meaning...
Yeah it sounds like she knows that she’s losing her mind due to confinement on the island and she knows that she’s gonna snap so she knows that she *has* to get off of the island or she’s gonna kill everyone.
You could try "I just can't wait to be king" from the lion king.. Get some really good vibes of Simba basically saying he can't wait for his father to die so he can overthrow and take his place
This sounds like a villain song and I'm LIVING for it. Moana walking through a decaying island with a grayish looking sea is all I could visualize. I love it.
This sounds like a Disney villain realizing her potential to conquer and achieve power. Someone who's lived in a cheery, simple town has become tired of the insipid lifestyle and knows that she could be more. Like the line "If I go there's just no telling how far I'll go." makes it feel like Moana has become unstoppable in her path and if anyone crosses her, they would face terrible consequences.
This version is incredible... it has a very “Panic at the Disco” feel. Amazing how a key change can completely change the mood of the song. Love it!!!!
Instead of a happy little island village with a curious girl, this version sounds like a warrior who wants to explore just for the heck of conquest and power. Just... the minor key, guys. It's powerful.
That combined with a male singer and the heavier instruments like drums and bass guitar really just makes it feel much more forceful and strong handed. It's crazy that he can take a song like "How Far I'll Go" and turn it into something like this.

Honestly, this song sounds more like a song about leaving home or suicide and self harm, and it’s extremely dark, seriously, just changing the key changes everything

So in music we have scales, example: CDEFGABC. They can be major or minor. Major: happy. Example: CDEFGABC on the piano. Minor: sad--there is more tension. Example: ABCDEFGA. Listen to the regular version of this song, which is in E Major; then this one, which is in E minor! Hope this helps a little!
Minor keys are the same just the third sixth and seventh notes in the key are a half step flat. At least that's what most people think of as minor, which is the natural minor. If you leave the 7th natural, then it's a harmonic minor. If you use the natural minor on descent, but just have a flat third on the ascent, that's a melodic minor which is sometimes used in Jazz.
"Ughhhh I'm so sick of hearing how far I'll go. We're singing it in choir and every girl there thinks she's a fucking pop star for being able to sing it. I'm sO SICK OF-" UA-cam: Chase uploaded a minor key version of that song * throws everything to the side for five minutes to watch*
I can imagine this being the reprise where she turns evil and uses the water to do evil things. Evil moana universe anyone? (Also my ears had a hard time adjusting to the key at the beginning bc I listen to the song so much) 😂💖
It's almost like a sailor who is drawn to the depths of the sea and death that waits there. "No one knows how deep it goes. And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me. And let me know what's beyond that line. Will I cross that line?"
wow. this ist stunning as always. Keep on this amazing work! I have a little question... What did happen to UA-cam Desperado-cover? I really loved it and it's very sad that it is not on UA-cam anymore
Harley Pappas Yes. The sirens would lure men on passing ships with their voices, until the ships would crash on the rocks and break apart, sending the crew to their deaths. Sirens weren't exactly what I was talking about. I meant that the deep dark of the sea was calling out.
Well after reading all these comments about Moana turning/being lured to evil, here's my take: Moana hates the life she’s living. Too stagnant, no chance for adventure on the high seas, etc. and she’s obviously sick and tired of the expectations on her to be the perfect daughter and leader of her people. The ocean is a malicious entity who tempts her with the heart of Te Fiti and with its own allure of power. Moana succumbs, and becomes a demigoddess in her own right. She then lures in followers and worshippers from her former home. Not everyone on Motunui agrees with her twisted ideals or the way she obtained her power, and some try to stop her. In revenge, Moana uses her newfound powers to bring destruction and ruin upon Motunui! Then she and her followers embark upon the journeys and adventures she’d always dreamed of. They discover new (is)lands, and Moana even discovers how to create new lands using the power of the heart of Te Fiti. But alas, there is a price Moana must pay for her megalomania... because the heart of Te Fiti has been away from its rightful place/owner for too long, a curse falls on Moana: Everywhere she goes, ruin begins to follow. The lands that she and her people settle begin to suffer from famine or natural disasters not long after Moana and her people arrive. Moana begins to create new islands for them, which under her magic, offers some protection and staves off disaster for a couple of generations. But eventually, those lands succumb, and due to the curse, no matter what Moana does, she can’t restore those lost or barren lands to their former glory. Moana starts to feel guilty, but she’s too addicted to her power to truly make things right by restoring Te Fiti’s heart to its rightful place. Because she fears that her followers will turn against her, she leaves the island she recently lived on with her people and is never seen again. However, she never strays far from her people. She continues to create new land for her people to settle. And so the story of Moana ends (or continues) here: Moana remains cursed to recreate short-lived island paradises that are doomed to fall, with her subjects’ descendants forced to follow her trail of crumbs for the rest of eternity.
I want this to be a movie, or just an animation. Oh, Hello! I come from the future. Now we have corona- I mean Voldemort, and Forest fires and Bad stuff. So get ready. What? This isn't how comments work? ... Welp.
This version of the song... It tells the story of a young girl, raised on a chain of islands far from the mainland that was taken from them. She is the princess of this nation of people, the next ruler of the Exiled. The people on the island are happy there, unwanting to return to the ocean to travel back to their homeland. They lost the war, after all. This was a peaceful place, where no more blood would have to be spilled. However, the ocean calls to her, the horizon screams for her attention... her homeland cries out her name. So she begins to plan. Corrupted, vengeful, and terrifying, she crafts the perfect plot. Her plans are dark, terrible, they cross every line of humanity, yet she does not care. Her mind is solely on the horizon in front of her, on the ocean that divides her people from their rightful home. She will return to the mainland, reclaim her lands, and show the true meaning of terror to those that sent her people into exile. After she takes back her homeland... There's no telling how far she'll go. How many lands she'll conquer... how many oceans will call to her. She'll go to the horizon and back... and who know how much farther. Or at least... that's the story I get out of this.
BrookeLynn Sigle there would have to be recorded tracks and vocals, which would actually still make for a great show if Chase combined his own live vocals and instrumentals. it'd be an interactive show on the performer's part. it's actually harder to do because you can't improvise if you mess up, the back track will keep going.
TeenDream888 Yea it would still be a great show but i dont think it would be the same and you are right it is that much harder if he messes up but i just dont think it would be the same
Straight chills. Absolute goosebumps, no lie, those harmonies were really excellently done, and this is my favourite version of this song I've ever heard.
a mermaid taken from her family at a young age when she followed them to a pirate ship. she got caught in a rope and was hauled up. instead of killing her, like the crew normally did since mermaids only cause problems, they adopted her. she's been a part of the crew since then, as her tail faded away as the the water dried all those years ago. in her mid-teenage years, the older crew have resigned to a life ashore a tiny island where they won't be persecuted for their pasts, so she and the younger part of the crew visit them often. during a visit, she hears the voice of the sea, but doesn't know why she can hear it when no one else can. she wants to leave what has essentially become her family to figure out her past, but she's afraid that if she follows the sea, she'll forget the crew and never return.
When I hear this version of the song I think of a person becoming a villain when the 'good guys' let the villain's friend (or any other person they care a lot about) die and doesn't try to help them. During this song it's just the villain losing themselves, questioning everything they once thought, and being driven to the point where they will stop at NOTHING to avenge the person they cared so much about.
Is Mulan's Reflection already in a minor key? Even if it is I think a cover by him would be magnificent. Or anything from The Nightmare Before Christmas, for that matter...
Jess Star The proper tone is called dissonance, the band term anyway, we've heard it in the happy major key and the minor key adds an edge, it's a very cool technique!
Jess Star Minor key does that. we expect a major key, so a song in a minor key causes cognitive dissonance. It makes the listener uncomfortable, so we associate it with being dark or evil. While I was still doing music, I would change songs to a minor key or a major key as an exercise. Zelda's Lullaby could sound so creepy and the Imperial March sounded so uplifting.
Yeah. All I can hear is the story of Moana, but this time she has schizophrenia, and the voices she hears are trying to get her into the water and away from the island even though, in the back of her head she knows she could drown! So she goes in and the rest of the journey is her in the underworld and she's finally happy.
I LOVE how you used the instruments to make the part about how happy everyone is on the island still sound kind of cheery and upbeat, while the tone of your voice singing the words makes it sound like you're mocking them for their naivety
Ever since I saw someone's comment about how it sounds like Moana is someone who is haunted by urges to succumb to some evil sea-power, and that this song is her describing her fighting her desire for it right before she gives in and turns evil, I just can't listen to this version as anything else. That's all I hear it as now
Lyric I've been standing at the edge of the water 'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why I wish I could be the perfect daughter But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try Every turn I take, every trail I track Every path I make, every road leads back To the place I know, where I can not go Though I long to be See the line where the sky meets the sea it calls me And no one knows, how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh I know, everybody on this island seems so happy on this island Everything is by design I know, everybody on this island has a role on this island So maybe I can roll with mine I can lead with pride, I can make us strong I'll be satisfied if I play along But the voice inside sings a different song What is wrong with me? See the light as it shines on the sea it's blinding But no one knows, how deep it goes And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me And let me know, what's beyond that line, will I cross that line? See the line where the sky meets the sea it calls me And no one knows, how far it goes If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me One day I'll know, how far I'll go
Gotta love the fact he's wearing a mickey mouse shirt while singing this incredibly epic, eerie disney song. (Just typing that seemed odd to me.. lel.)
Would you ever consider doing Moana's "You're Welcome" in Minor ? I can imagine it, and it feels like the meaning would take on a seriously dark depressing tragic tone.
Minor keys are twisted! This is how I see this. Its the dark story of Moana; The island being a prison, and all of the villagers are brainwashed to never want to leave, her dad is the warden. She wants to escape the island, not to restore the heart, but to get away and escape captivity. She's finally fighting the brainwashing and thinking for herself. The island is life, her dad is society (telling everyone on the island the right and wrongs of life), the water/ocean is suicide. Minor keys are F'd up. "If i go there's no telling how far I'll go...."
It is like the situation in Attack on Titan where the walls are sort of cages and it also parallels how we have cages(obstacles) in our lives and how everyone in the AOT world is so accustomed to the walls that they have no desire to explore the outside world but then we have Armin whose goal is to go to the sea
I imagine it'd be moana stayed as chief of motunui, and then years later, the darkness runs over whole island, leaving it in ashes. Leaving her the only one alive because of the heart she wore as protection, she crushes the green rock, and uses the wrath of the ocean and makes her way to kill te ka
This version doesn't sound dark or evil to me. It sounds powerful--like she feels this deep in her heart, and she is destined to do this despite everyone trying to keep her from the task she is meant to carry out.
Well dang, I read this after the song just ended and now I need to listen to it again with this metaphor in mind to see how that alters the songs sound even more.
I love that you didn't change 'daughter' to 'son', I hate when artists change the lyrics of a song to match their gender or sexuality, it can completely change the rhythm and sometimes even the meaning behind the song. You are so talented and I love your work, I hope this major to minor series never ends. Another amazing job!
I've been staring at the edge of the water 'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why I wish I could be the perfect daughter But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try Every turn I take, every trail I track Every path I make, every road leads back To the place I know, where I can not go, where I long to be See the line where the sky meets the sea? I love how the point of the series is that you’re taking a song written in a major key, and making it minor, and then the very last chord you sing in the song is a major chord. That made me smile. (I’m pretty sure it’s an F major chord, to be exact. One of my favourite major chords, with the exception of B flat [specifically when played as F - Bflat - D]).
Bruuuuuuuuh. Wut. This was amazing, I'm so glad I stumbled across this video. Instant sub when I heard the chorus, dude. I'm getting serious Fall Out Boy vibes and I dig it so much. Keep on putting out amazing stuff, I personally know that music has a lot of competition, but I definitely think you've got something here, especially with the minor key stuff. God has given you an incredible talent. Keep it up, dude!! 👍🏼
Underrated, and perfect execution of how half steps in keys completely change everything about every song ever. I've tried to explain how phenomenal you depict how simple a change, changes everything and changes the message. My kids are amazingly and shockingly affected by key changes and they hate some classical and Christmas music because as kids they said it sounded sad and scary but they are famous songs
I feel like this version changes the story, and I feel like it would be like this: Moana is a servant/slave to Queen on this island. She has always loved the Ocean and is realizing that she can control it. This song her realizing that she wants to be a Queen and she thinks she'd love to be in charge.( using the line "I could lead with pride, I could make us strong, I'll be satisfied if I play along" ) She decides to run away and leaves on a boat and the lyric "If I cross that line there's just no telling how far I'll go" refers to how far she is willing to go to get what she wants. She leaves and she decides to find others to enslave and make her subjects.
I feel like this has been mentioned before, but it would be interesting to have a series of minor to major covers, and see if you could produce the opposite effect (making originally sad songs sound upbeat). Just a suggestion 😊 love all your covers, keep it up Chase!
Woah, the reprise, I am Moana, must be so awesome as well in minor key! Also this cover inspired me to make a storyboard animatic, so thanks so much ^^
Nightmare Bonnie Markiplier I totally agree! The original was okay but I never really wanted to listen to it. This cover however.... this is probably the 15th time I've listened to it, and I only found it yesterday! I love this cover so much!

I'm very musically handicapped, I have no clue what a major or a minor key is, what it does or how it sounds, all I know is I like this
So in music we have scales, example: CDEFGABC. They can be major or minor.
Major: happy. Example: CDEFGABC on the piano.
Minor: sad--there is more tension. Example: ABCDEFGA. Listen to the regular version of this song, which is in E Major; then this one, which is in E minor!
Hope this helps a little!
To put things easy, a minor key usually sounds pretty depressing, ngl.
A mayor key sounds happier
Other than the other comments, looking up an easy music theory video helps.
Major sounds happy.
Minor sounds sad.

Welcome to the world of head voice.
Isn't it just very breathy Head Voice? Idk I'm not good at things like this
Roy Wilson yeah. That’s all it is.
It's almost like a sailor who is drawn to the depths of the sea and death that waits there. "No one knows how deep it goes. And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me. And let me know what's beyond that line. Will I cross that line?"

Ever heard of the sirens from Greek mythology?
Harley Pappas Yes. The sirens would lure men on passing ships with their voices, until the ships would crash on the rocks and break apart, sending the crew to their deaths. Sirens weren't exactly what I was talking about. I meant that the deep dark of the sea was calling out.
This is what inspired my Evil Percy Jackson AU

Well after reading all these comments about Moana turning/being lured to evil, here's my take:
Moana hates the life she’s living.
And so the story of Moana ends (or continues) here: Moana remains cursed to recreate short-lived island paradises that are doomed to fall, with her subjects’ descendants forced to follow her trail of crumbs for the rest of eternity.
if moana was a villain movie, this would be AMAZING. (it's amazing anyway though hhfjdk)
OMFG this needs more likes

Crysi Crysis I could see this playing out as I read it. If you don't write it, I will gladly do so!

i would but there is so many things HE does and i dont think it would be the same at a concert
This sounds like every panic at the disco song. I guess they like the minor key

I didn't realize that until now wow
a mermaid taken from her family at a young age when she followed them to a pirate ship. she got caught in a rope and was hauled up. instead of killing her, like the crew normally did since mermaids only cause problems, they adopted her. she's been a part of the crew since then, as her tail faded away as the the water dried all those years ago. in her mid-teenage years, the older crew have resigned to a life ashore a tiny island where they won't be persecuted for their pasts, so she and the younger part of the crew visit them often. during a visit, she hears the voice of the sea, but doesn't know why she can hear it when no one else can. she wants to leave what has essentially become her family to figure out her past, but she's afraid that if she follows the sea, she'll forget the crew and never return.

glitter prince that's awesome, ypur story that is.
It should be either a story on Wattpad or a Webcomic. I would read it either of them!!
Didn't watch the movie but every minor key turns innocent characters into villains. Major to Minor is freaking awesome.
Ann When Moana becomes a pirate
When I hear this version of the song I think of a person becoming a villain when the 'good guys' let the villain's friend (or any other person they care a lot about) die and doesn't try to help them. During this song it's just the villain losing themselves, questioning everything they once thought, and being driven to the point where they will stop at NOTHING to avenge the person they cared so much about.
Is Mulan's Reflection already in a minor key? Even if it is I think a cover by him would be magnificent.
Or anything from The Nightmare Before Christmas, for that matter...
I don't know about Reflection but Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack is almost exclusively minor key already.
Maybe he should do be a man in a minor key
Has Lin seen this??? Lin would love this omg his voice is amazing

Why does every cover he make sound like the evil version on the songs? XD
Jess Star Minor Keys generally make things sound super depressing or like evil. (most of the time)
Jess Star almost anything in a minor key is sad or "evil" sounding where as songs in a major key tend to sound happy and "good"
Jess Star The proper tone is called dissonance, the band term anyway, we've heard it in the happy major key and the minor key adds an edge, it's a very cool technique!
Jess Star Minor key does that. we expect a major key, so a song in a minor key causes cognitive dissonance. It makes the listener uncomfortable, so we associate it with being dark or evil.
While I was still doing music, I would change songs to a minor key or a major key as an exercise. Zelda's Lullaby could sound so creepy and the Imperial March sounded so uplifting.

emma and the diamonds The power of minor key!
Yeah. All I can hear is the story of Moana, but this time she has schizophrenia, and the voices she hears are trying to get her into the water and away from the island even though, in the back of her head she knows she could drown! So she goes in and the rest of the journey is her in the underworld and she's finally happy.
HelpImAddicted15 hey hey you... yes you...you should write that
emma and the diamonds love your username:)
That's all I hear it as now
Can we appreciate how he sounds so rebellious, but is also wearing a cute mickey shirt?
Moana's obsession with the ocean drives her to purposefully sink to the bottom

Lyric
I've been standing at the edge of the water
'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I can not go
Though I long to be
See the line where the sky meets the sea it calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go
Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh
I know, everybody on this island seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know, everybody on this island has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I'll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?
See the light as it shines on the sea it's blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what's beyond that line, will I cross that line?
See the line where the sky meets the sea it calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, how far I'll go

Minor keys are twisted! This is how I see this. Its the dark story of Moana; The island being a prison, and all of the villagers are brainwashed to never want to leave, her dad is the warden. She wants to escape the island, not to restore the heart, but to get away and escape captivity. She's finally fighting the brainwashing and thinking for herself. The island is life, her dad is society (telling everyone on the island the right and wrongs of life), the water/ocean is suicide. Minor keys are F'd up. "If i go there's no telling how far I'll go...."
Umm ima go with badass
chriscabrera45 This explanation kind of reminds me of Borrasca by CK Walker.
chriscabrera45 I kind of thought if it as suicide as well
It is like the situation in Attack on Titan where the walls are sort of cages and it also parallels how we have cages(obstacles) in our lives and how everyone in the AOT world is so accustomed to the walls that they have no desire to explore the outside world but then we have Armin whose goal is to go to the sea
chriscabrera45 ahhh these comments give me chills i love them!

Do love is an open door from frozen!!!! That could sound super creepy
Great suggestion!
HOLY FUCK THAT SOUNDS AMAZING
If you do this song, do you mind replacing "finish each other's sandwiches" with "finish each other's life". Thank you.
Perhaps you could imply Hans' intentions in his parts. That would be cool to hear.
Yes please!!!!
This version doesn't sound dark or evil to me. It sounds powerful--like she feels this deep in her heart, and she is destined to do this despite everyone trying to keep her from the task she is meant to carry out.
I need a Moana AU fanfic based on the vibes this song has
you are good
Makes me think of someone contemplating suicide using metaphors
Yes, the island is life and sea is suicide
omfg I just realised that and that makes the song even more beautiful
Well dang, I read this after the song just ended and now I need to listen to it again with this metaphor in mind to see how that alters the songs sound even more.
Wow Disney just took a dark turn. It does fit in a very dark way.

I'm addicted to this, it's been on repeat for like the past day😂 amazing!! You're so talented!

I feel like this version changes the story, and I feel like it would be like this:
Moana is a servant/slave to Queen on this island.

Much agreed
I feel like this has been mentioned before, but it would be interesting to have a series of minor to major covers, and see if you could produce the opposite effect (making originally sad songs sound upbeat). Just a suggestion 😊 love all your covers, keep it up Chase!
That Picardiy 3rd at the end was so beautifully done
Woah, the reprise, I am Moana, must be so awesome as well in minor key!
Also this cover inspired me to make a storyboard animatic, so thanks so much ^^
this is WAY better than the original (I'm serious)
Nightmare Bonnie Markiplier I totally agree! The original was okay but I never really wanted to listen to it. This cover however.... this is probably the 15th time I've listened to it, and I only found it yesterday! I love this cover so much!

Alexis Poling I'm still debating on whether or not I should buy it! Every time I do buy a song I love I listen to it nonstop til I get sick of it, and I don't want that to happen with this song! Lol
Brooklyn Lisemby try putting your phone of shuffle, it'll prevent you from listening to the same songs over and over. I do the same thing, but with my phone on shuffle, I'm able to enjoy all of my songs
Rose Traverso I normally do. But it rarely helps.
I'm literally so obsessed with every single thing Chase produces
