On this episode of Mapping It, we start our adventure by crossing the border from Slovenia into Croatia and check into our Airbnb in Rovinj. After a quick tour of our Airbnb, we head to a tour of the olive groves of Brist Olive Oil, a wonderful family-run Istrian olive oil company. One of the owners, Paul, takes us on a guided tour of the olive groves. Around sunset, we enjoy a guided olive oil tasting right in the olive groves!
Our first full day in Croatia starts early with a drive to Pula. After spending a couple hours wandering around town, we visit the House of Istrian Olive Oil where we enjoy a CROATIAN OLIVE OIL TASTING before getting back on the road.
We continue our ISTRIA ROAD TRIP by visiting Motovun and enjoying a self-guided CROATIAN WINE TOUR at two of the BEST WINERIES IN ISTRIA: Kabola Winery and Kozlovic Winery.
We get an early start on day 2 of our Croatian road trip and we’re on the road by 6:30am. After a very long drive from Rovinj, we finally make it to PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK. We spend the morning exploring the Lower Lakes, and the afternoon exploring the Upper Lakes. It’s a great way to spend a day in Croatia! We end our day in Split with an incredible dinner at Kitchen 5, which we highly recommend!
On day 3 of our 7 day Croatian road trip, we explore Split! Getting an early start to the day, we explore the ruins of Diocletian’s Palace before the crowds set in. Then we enjoy a delicious breakfast at Ciri Biri Bella. After breakfast, we visit the cellars of Diocletian’s Palace and see a Game of Thrones filming location. After a stop in at Uje Oil Bar for an olive oil tasting, we venture outside Split to the nearby Klis Fortress, another Game of Thrones filming location. In the evening, we hike up Marjan Hill for some golden hour views overlooking Split before we end the day at our Airbnb that just happens to have epic sunset views overlooking the old town.
Day 4 of our epic adventure takes us to the island of Hvar. We spend the day biking around Hvar, eating incredible Croatian food at Hora Hvar, and swimming at the beach!
We leave Split and head to Dubrovnik on day 5 of our Croatian road trip. We take you on a tour of our Airbnb in the heart of Old Town Dubrovnik. It has a rooftop terrace with an epic view! Then we head out of the city for a delicious PEKA DINNER at Konoba Dubrava where we have roasted lamb and octopus cooked under an iron dome.
Day 6 of our epic Croatian road trip has us exploring the city of Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic. We start early with a morning walk along the old town walls. We visit Taj Mahal for a delicious Bosnian meat feast for lunch! In the afternoon, we hit up Banje Beach for a relaxing swim in the sea. For dinner, we stop by Fast Food Republic (also known as Burger House Republic) for some unique and delicious burgers in Dubrovnik. We finish our day with an epic sunset from Mount Srd, so stick around!
On our last full day in Croatia, day 7 of our incredible Croatian road trip, we start our day by exploring Dubrovnik outside the city walls. We visit some famous Game of Thrones filming locations near Pile Gate, and then visit Fort Lovrijenac, also known as the Fort of St Lawrence. When the rain comes, we head out of the city for a road trip along the Pelješac Peninsula where we visit two famous wineries. Our first stop is Matusko Winery, one of Croatia’s top producers. Our second stop is Grgic Winery, where Croatian wine was put on the map. We wrap up our last day in Croatia with a dinner at Konoba Jesuite and watch the sunset from the roof of our Airbnb in Dubrovnik.
We wrap up our time in Croatia by sitting on the Iron Throne before heading to the airport in Dubrovnik.
We hope you enjoy coming along on our adventures!

Most tourist videos about Croatia are stereotypical. Natural and cultural historical sights, fancy restaurants... I was most impressed by how much you tried to learn about the places you visited; olive groves, wineries, and especially your excellent pronunciation of the names of places, wines, olive oil... From your video, I, a Croat, learned something new about my homeland. Hvala

Excellent video, I love it!!!! Love the bloopers, too. Thanks for taking us on your guys' great adventure. Seems like after wars people just turn the areas into tourist attractions for money. Maybe that will happen to the middle east, Ukraine, & soon Taiwan/China.

Bravi! Delightful vlog and to see you enjoy the Adriatic delights (food, culture, wine, architecture and history). I dont know how I stumbled on this episode of yours. You certainly covered a lot of ground. Like how you narrated/edited your travels.
Fun fact (I used to to live in Venice for 20 odd years, so Istria was round the corner): the istrian stone (all the white stone/travertine you saw/experienced esp in the architecture etc - commonly known as marmo d’istria) is the building blocks of the Serenissima (Venetian Republic) ie going back 1100AD which controlled from Venice to Istanbul the whole Adriatic Sea (well also west all the way to lombardia - wherever you see the San Marco’s Lion (lion with wings and bible by feet) stone logo. All was done in the same stone. So when you see the white stone facades of the churches buildings in Venice/Veneto etc its all been done the Istrian stone. Cool characteristic is that it whitens more with time and very durable. Prized by the Venetians and i suspect taken down to the rest of Italy. Marble (Carrara white is too soft to withstand the weather esp outdoors.
Seeing you enjoyed Croatia/Venice, perhaps on your next travels, follow the route south to Corfu to Athens to Istanbul .. you’ll see the influence of the Venetian Empire. Till then, thanks for this and enjoy your travels, be well x best

PS: you touched on the properties of the istrian travertine stone when you visited Pula area waterfalls - calcium magnesium and why the water is so clear, so all the facades, fountains, sculptures, steps etc is all the same stone. Also different note, thanks to the Venetians, the ottomans never were able to rule over the Adriatic. The towns, inhabited areas, were deliberately higher up to stay safe from coastal looting.
Puts a perspective on globalisation and how art, culture travels through time and influences cultures especially with food. For wine, you should go to Georgia. The oldest vine roots come from there, dating 2000+ BCE and travelled west. The Venetians brought a lot of the eastern, central Asian culture to Europe. A bit like how pizza, Chinese, french food travelled to USA. If you like history, Marco Polo etc, “History of Venice” by John Norwich is a good start. He wrote extensively about the Venetians, Byzantines etc. .. Sorry i am rambling. Do enjoy your travels. Be well

This is such great information! The region is filled with so much history and we love every opportunity to learn more about the places we visit. We've been to Venice, and now that you mention it, we absolutely see the similarities between the stone used in the buildings in Venice and the areas that we visited in Croatia. Exploring the other countries along the Adriatic, and in the neighboring region, is on our bucket list and hopefully we'll be able to visit - we've heard some fantastic things about the region and would love to experience the culture, food, and history for ourselves! Thanks for watching!

Randomly found your channel and awesome videos! Appreciate the travel tips! I'm planning a week 2 week trip with my girlfriend to Croatia and maybe another country nearby. Hopefully you can help us with some questions. What was your rough budget/spending for your 7 day Croatia road trip? What other country near Croatia do you recommend us to spend our last 4-6 nights? Thanks in advance!

    • @MappingIt
      @MappingIt  4 місяці тому

That sounds like a fun trip! We budgeted about $150-200 USD per night for our Airbnbs. We probably spent about $20-30 USD per person on food each day. Our rental car was very expensive and it averaged about $100 USD per day, not including gas, tolls, or parking fees. We'd definitely recommend only using a car if you have to. If you want to save money, consider taking the bus and you won't have to worry about parking fees either. Travel can be expensive but there are definitely ways to save money, like staying in hostels and cooking meals yourself.
We loved exploring Slovenia and Bosnia while we were in the Balkans region, you can't go wrong with either one! Alternately, you could spend several nights on some of the Croatian islands, like Hvar or Korcula if you enjoy the beach.
      Thanks for watching!
