I discovered Burial a couple of weeks ago while reading a reddit post on the origin of future bass, and fell in love. I was only 4 years old when his first album was released, but now at 22 I’m loving experiencing the simplicity and beauty of what he created, way back before I knew electronic music existed. The track is absolute mint, man. Well done.

Hey all, don' t be too scared to do vocal stuff. Most major DAWs have a ton of processing and there are a lot of free and cheap vsts out there. I think there is also a way to snap it to a MIDI line. Take a short phrase, do several takes on different tracks and tweak until you get something you like. With this genre, the vocals can be just a part of the overall soundscape, the quality of the song is not as dependent on it as in more mainstream genres. I'm saying this because, as far as free vocal loops go I did not find much I could use, you will probably get better results from DIY.
Yeah, vocal samples from various sites never fit in the way they should and no matter how much you pitch edit them, they mostly seem to be made for a very specific soundscape and beat, which makes it a pain to get them to fit.
Funny, I love these videos but I watch with my hands Infront of my face cos I kind of love the mystery of my favourite producers. Aphex twin has been that beautiful endless mystery to me since I was a teenager and still today!:)
Well if it helps, this isn't the process Burial himself would use when building his tracks, it's not even the same program. To many, myself included, his process will remain a mystery. This was merely my procedure and interpretation

Nice work! I'm busy attempting to resurrect my own production career (as a hobby for now) after a 10 year plus hiatus (very long story). I feel like there's unfinished business there. Last night I was thinking about Burial's aesthetic and feeling so jealous hahaha. You just know it's a burial track instantly. I want that. I wander if any of you can help me - I'm having a major identity crisis in terms of what sound I want to create and I lack confidence in my abilities big time (very very rusty and overwhelmed at the sheer magnitude of new tools and processes etc). When I was a young whipper snapper I had a cocky arrogance that I could make anything I wanted to but I've lost that completely. The process back then was very experimental with a strong focus on pushing the edges of electronic music and I would never be happy with anything that didn't sound fresh and new and genre defying. Having grown up a little now I have realized that nothing really is truly original and good artist borrow and re0imagine all the time. Any one going through some of these things? How do you get the spark back? I just want to enjoy being creative again but I get so hung up on a number of things. I get discouraged by the sheer amount of and diversity of excellent music there is already out there and slip into a state of feeling like there's no point in trying to add my own lot into this sea of great content. I just got Ableton 11 and a whole stack of amazing Kontakt instruments but I'm stuck!
Hey man, sounds like some of the anxiety you're feeling may be caused by staring too much at the big picture. You're right though, there is so much new music and artists out there do all sorts of amazing stuff with electronic music, crossovers to to stuff with instruments, so many different genres and, live performance and everything in between. I'd say it's best not to get hung up on any of that stuff it doesn't matter and will only distract you from doing what you enjoy. If you want to get back into music then do just that. Start small, just making a beat or a couple of chord progressions using Operator or something like that. Don't go in with the mind set like your trying to make the fattest track us mortals have ever heard. Just go in with a curious and experimental mind with the sole purpose of having fun and learning a bit along the way. I think that's the most important thing, just getting back into why you used to do it in the first place. For me it always has to be fun, if it's not then what's the point? If making music to me feels in anyway like a chore or a grind I just take a break or find a way to make it enjoyable again, even for my tutorials. The worst thing anyone can do with their art is start comparing it to others and get overwhelmed by the volume and quality that's out there and let it stop them doing what they enjoy. Like you said, a Burial track in instantly recognisable because his sound is so defined. It's obvious but the best artists are the ones who just make their shit their own. It's not like you have to invent the wheel again to sound unique. Just find whatever it is that you most enjoy in making music and pursue that as far as you can. Even creating music in genre's that have been around for an age it's still possible to stand out, just takes a bit of practice. Not sure if any of that helped, hoped so. Anyway good luck man, just get started I'm sure once you do the rest will fall in place. Peace out

Normally I would just use this website for stock footage then layer it with cinematic 'vintage film' layers or something in Premiere Pro.. www.videezy.com/free-video/clouds Vizzy.io is also good for audio visualiser stuff but can be a bit limited for choice, worth checking out though vizzy.io/
Fuck yeah dude, you'll end up with a more natural feel if you release snap and go off grid. Almost every track Burial made on 'Untrue' was created in a program called Sound Forge which didn't have those features I don't think anythings a waste of time if it sounds good or interesting to you : )

90% of the time I would say it starts with the chord progression. For this example however I think I started with the drums as that's where most of the 'Burial' sound comes from in this track. I may have had a real basic chord progression playing in the background with the bass or something but that would have been more for context and something I went back to later. For all my own tracks though I usually begin with a chord progression usually from guitar as it's the only instrument I can play. If not guitar then I'll just pop some notes in using a soft pad sound and work it out from there.

I can heavily recommend an artist called Wukah, in particular an album called ‘Flesh’. It’s very Burial-esque and extremely well produced Also the dude makes some great tutorials under the name ‘Hollow Ground Productions’
You could use the technique that Burial himself has used and just search acappella versions of songs on UA-cam. Doesn't need to be high quality, just random people covering Britney Spears or something would work. In this track I sampled an audition from two guys performing on some trashy music based game show in the UK from the early 2000's. The worse the vocal is to begin with the more fun it becomes to make it work I find. You also end up with some sonically different artifacts, stuff you wouldn't get from a nice clean (in tune) recording. If you want good vocals then something like 'Splice' would be your go too for royalty free samples which I think is one of the cheapest options as well. The issue I have with Splice samples though is they're often very cheesy and you have to sift through a lot of shight to get to the good stuff
The last few projects have taken roughly 30 hours to make. The recording, editing, uploading and all that is probably another 6/7 hours. My last few videos have been a long time in the making, I think I started some of them like last winter

Hello! I am not hater,but isn't the garage style is known for placing the kicks on the weak spots, and the snare on the strong ones? Sorry for mistakes, I'm from Russia=)
I personally play around mostly with this: Kick on bar 1&8, then a quick kick on 3&11 before the snare hits on 4&12. Add a few kicks to your taste to make it more wavy. Thats the basic stuff you need, make sure your drums aren't too stuck together, let them breathe except for some hats and foleys maybe! Use triplets for some good movements on the hats and foleys, switch up the timings often for more movement!
Depends how far you're willing to go in order to copy someone's style haha. I would advise you just remove quantise or 'snap' in your DAW, saves learning new software ; )

Burial hand placed his drums in Soundforge. That's why they sound so unique.
What makes Burials drums unique is the off grid swing. The drums on this are too fixed and dont have that slackness
