- This is a recent $14.99 thrift store find here in Wisconsin. It is a Mid-Century Modern Desk made by Century Furniture out of Hickory, North Carolina. I drove this piece to the state of Virginia and will enjoy restoring it there for a family member. This furniture restoration will involve stripping paint, sanding, staining and joint repairs. Hi Barry, You do not have to explain to us your circumstances. It is nice that you are thinking of us…..The desk was an absolute steal and I’m sure you will get all the things sorted….saying that despite the little mishap with the lacquer it turned out amazing as always…Natalie 😊
Thank you for this Natalie
@@MadCityModern And the thing with the lacquer - happened to me as well, and I didn't have a clue as to why. Thanks for explaining it, now I know what I need to avoid that clouding effect... kia kaha from Aotearoa NZ...

BEWARE! NEVER RESPOND TO ANY GIVEAWAYS IN THE COMMENTS. THESE ARE SCAMS. I hope you enjoyed some of the scenery with this restoration project. I have fallen behind replying to all of the comments, but I look forward to catching up this week. Thank you for all of your support along the way! Barry
I'm in England but I have been to Virginia a few times. I absolutely love it

What a lovely restoration to this, once bland, almost ugly desk. She will love it, I’m sure. It looks brand new and sooo expensive. It still a amazes me that you had no formal training in this area, but you sure taught yourself well! You are the best, and you explain all the procedures like a pro! Well done….again! That Barbie monstrosity looks like a real killer job! All the best from Melbourne, Oz❤🦘
Thank you for doing this for your family member
I truly hope she enjoys it
I swear the furniture restoration channels have some of the most relaxing voice overs while doing the work. Beautiful work!
Thank you! 😊
His does, a voice to melt for😊
I agree. This is very Zen. I also watch the rug cleaning sites for the same reason.
I enjoy Barry and Angie on Transcend. Their voices are soothing and their work is exceptional ! 😊😊
His voice is very relaxing!
As soon as I hear your voice, I relax. Lovely videos, perfect editing.
Oh, the sticky, sticky blonde furniture finish! Came out great!
Thank you
This is like watching Bob Ross, so calming and interesting.
Wow! Thank you
Barry, I would never have recognized this desk as MCM with all that hideous yellow paint. Beautifully redone, as always!
Thank you
The quality of your work is second to none. And I appreciate your soft and gentle manner. It translates into the care you give to your restorations.
This is special. So uplifting
The mountain painting in the background reminds me of Bob Ross.
Me too!
1970's. For extra cash, my grandfather used to make 6 foot Santa Claus and 6 foot candy canes out of half inch wood and sold them before Christmas. He made the local paper 3 times over the course of his life. I make a 5 foot Mrs. Claus. I cut it out, sand it, prime it and then trace the pattern on it. I sell them for $200. So if I make six, that's some handy cash for a hobby. I use the windfield collection for my patterns. This year, I'm working on Santa's elves. A friend help me cut them out and I can do the rest. This is working with wood and it's a great hobby. I've got 50 of them primed and ready for their final colors.
I LOVE doing 3 drawer dressers. Here's some tips my grandfather taught me. If you have a small ding or dent. put a drop of water on the bare wood. The wood will absorb it and swell and it fills in that ding.
For outdoor furniture or crafts he always use rustoleum oil based paints. Personally, I would never paint inside furniture. I will take an antique and when I am done, I get offered money for the restored pieces. I usually find a spot in my house but I can't keep them all.
For a few deals, always check your local flea markets. I got a ream of black tracing paper for two bucks. 300 sheets . You can buy sandpaper, paints and supplies. Lots of returns from Amazon and others has people marking craft stuff at walk away prices. I saw a pack of six artist brushes. My sister scanned the bar code and they were $24.99. They were $2 a set. They had cheaper ones which just work fine and I now own enough for a lifetime.
I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you
Absolutely beautiful. Looking forward to Barbie's nightmare
Me too😁
I"m amazed that was hidden under that paint. Beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful. So glad you kept the patina on the knobs.
Me too!
Feelings of panic about something going wrong before your eyes can be a real turn-off about continuing the project. The grim realization that it is going to take WAY longer than originally thought can almost make you throw it out. It is with appreciation that I watch you persevere. I always learn new lessons when I watch your videos. Thank You.
This is good
OMG Barry, that is so frustrating at the end of a project!! But you still made it beautiful in the end. Bravo Barry 👏👏👏
Thank you Daniel
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of MCM furniture! Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 50s and 60s, and it takes me back to a simpler time. The desk was different from any I’ve seen and I love it. Thanks for sharing.
It's a lovely piece, and you always come through for these neglected pieces of furniture!!
Thank you so much!
I love your work and you did a beautiful job on this piece, especially under a time crunch! I can’t wait to see Barbie rescued!
Going to be fun!
You brought this piece back to life!!!
Thank you
Your gentle narration is addicting! I love your work, your commitment to honoring history and memories, and the sharing of your woodworking journey. Please do not feel obliged to speak to the part of your life that is personal or private. The gift of your channel is blessing enough., thank-you so much!
This means alot. I genuinely try to share things from the heart
The desk turned out awesome ,, I love the gel stain color ,,I love that you take away the paint & bring back woods natural beauty ,,thank you for the videos ❤😊
Thanks so much!
Barry Truly is a tonic! Such a lovely soul, hi soft and gentle manner shines through in his work and his personality. The resorted furniture aint the only thing that’s beautiful! :-) x ALWAYS a good job :-) I soo wann a visit this guy and give him a good tight long hug.
Thank you so much Scott

Sorry to see you ran into an issue with that lacquer. What a bummer. I appreciate you sharing the struggles, as we can all learn from them. It's beautiful now, Barry - rich & timeless. No doubt your family member will love and cherish it.
I love comments like this. So thoughtful
Today’s world is full of destruction, desolation, and disappointment. Your content is a breath of fresh air amid arid despair. You take something that nobody wants, and you see it’s soul, and you bring it out. Thank you.
This really made me smile
You don't do refinishing. You make magic! Wonderful work!
This means alot!
Beautiful results. A Century Furniture piece for $14.99 is definitely worth the time and trouble. Such a wonderful gift.
It really is!
Welcome to Virginia. I live in the SW corner, right across from Mount Airy in NC. Beauty all around, hardly a flat piece of land as we are in the Blue Mountain piedmont. The humidity in the Summer and early Autumn is devastating and for someone with a heart problem and afib, it makes going out of doors for any length of time impossible. Thank the Goddess for AC. Lovely desk and perfect for a child's room.
Such a beautiful part of the country
Wow! She came out simply gorgeous
Thank you! 😊
Barry:
Century is a good manufacture. It had fair prices back when. I remember selling pieces to clients. A good bang for your buck. The lines of the desk are very nice and the finish selection was good. A handsome piece. Carol from California
Thank you so much Carol
The shape of this desk is so elegant... it's like it has no actual weight... like it's floating! I love it! You did an amazinng restoration! So much love and hard work. The new owner is so lucky. I have nothing against painting furniture. I have painted some of my own but not all furniture need paint to become gorgeous and refreshed. The pieces you are choosing are ment to be restored. Sometimes, painting is a shame and other times a necessity. Love for the piece is the component for a beautiful outcome. Thanks so much for sharing
I love this comment
Gorgeous, GORGEOUS desk! Can't believe you found this for only $14.99!! What a steal :)
Candlelight stain is my Favorite 😊

Wow! That is one dramatic transformation!
Thank you
What a coincidence....I reside in WI. I just tuned into your video and I am also Virginia for a few days while we move our daughter here for graduate school. As always I love your work.
Wow! That is incredible
Such a beautiful transformation!! Fun Fact: I actually live about 25 minutes from Hickory, NC where this desk was made!! Beautiful furniture piece!!

Think you were in Virginia during the hottest days this summer. Virginia is beautiful but during dog days of summer I remember the cooler days of summer in my 30 years of time in Port Huron Michigan. every state is blessed with beautiful scenery. I still fondly remember the beautiful shores of Lake Huron and walks along the beach. Now in Richmond Virginia I love the beautiful
Trees and plants that are native here. God blesses us wherever He leads us and being close to family is the best! Your piece turned out beautifully and it looks like the person who was blessed with this piece also loves mid-century as well.
I am so thankful for comments like this. Thank you
It still turned out beautiful Berry!
Thank you!
It’s beautiful and it’s beauty marks are fine!
Glad to see you still watch!
@@MadCityModern of course, just in cognito some. Take care!
What a wonderful desk. Ok, it’s got a couple of ‘issues’, but it’s still a beautiful piece of furniture.
Thank you
First of all, your relative's workshop is stunning! Secondly, that piece is stunning, as usual. Always look forward to your videos. Donna from Philly
Thank you so much Donna
Beautiful desk! Lucky relative!
Thank you! 😊
I bow down to your broken dowel drilling skill. I never managed to do it cleanly 👍
By chance for me, sometimes a broken dowel can be pried off altogether with a screw inserted in it 😅
Funny you would say that. I tried to pull one out by inserting a screw
@@MadCityModern Did it work for you ?
Epic, just simply epic. You never cease to amaze. Thanks for sharing your talent.

I really love watching your videos. I try to imagine what kind of people might have owned the pieces or built them
I always try to do the same
Alabama here - ran into that issue of the stripper drying too fast! Stood there just staring at it, my mind was having difficulty registering what was happening LOL. Had to go back to scrapping, although it did make the scrapping easier, was dealing with 3 layers of paint. Always enjoy your work - Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this
WOW, absolutely gorgeous !
Thank you so much!
A really fantastic job. Absolutely a beautiful piece!!!
Thank you very much!
I didn't realize how beautiful it was until the paint was removed
I can see why you like the color of that stain, it's very pretty. The desk turned out so nice! The knobs are gorgeous.
Thanks so much! 😊
*Best Audio to-date* ..
*Well Done Barry* .. 👏
Wow. Thank you. I tried to improve some of the sound quality
This desk came out beautifully. I love the style and size. You can't beat mid century modern furniture for looking sleek and stylish. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much! 😊
The piece is lovely, Barry...so glad you kept those gorgeous original handles.
Many thanks
Wow, I would have never guessed that a beautiful desk was under that cream paint. You are demonstrating once again that you have a an eye for a worthy project. Thank you for your honesty and sharing your knowledge and skills.
Thank you so much!
Amazing work can’t believe how good is looking now.
Thank you for sharing.
So nice of you
Great job as always! I hope you enjoyed your stay in our great State of Virginia!!! Come back soon!
Thank you so much
Oh my goodness! 😁 I laughed at you calling the frame a carcass...😂😊 I got immediately jealous at what looked to be a Lane Acclaim chest!!! Polka album? 😮 😆🤣 Now, that would be crazy background music... Yes, the heat definitely affects everything. It's why I generally abstain from doing certain projects during our summer months. We were at 106 degrees today. 🥴
I loved seeing all the things you caught
Wow! Your two little "mistakes" are mostly unnoticeable. You do such beautiful work. Hello from your neighbor in Minneapolis MN.
Thank you so much
Wow another great job you are a true craftsman
Thank you very much!
Ohhh I'm glad you posted! I was getting withdrawal symptoms! 😂 😂 😅😅😅
yes me too!
This made me smile
Wow, never thought that beauty was under that paint 😊
Barry, it really is so beautiful! Your fam member will love it!!
Thanks so much!
I love 💕 this desk, it’s perfect for a left handed person. I think you did an amazing job considering the condition. It’s very thoughtful of you to do all this work for someone else, I’m sure they will treasure this desk for years to come 😊
Thank you so much!
I so want that desk! Now i know what to look for as i am searching for one.
Let me know if you do
Great job as always!!!.....Safe Travels....some folks like most dislike it but sanding finds the true beauty in a piece. Once you get to the fine sanding with 220 or finer, the piece real shows its beautiful grain patterns....And the clear coat makes the final statement....Good Karma your ways!
Such great feedback
Truly lovely. I am glad you were able to rescue this wonderful desk. Thank for explaining the thought process to your steps so well.
Thank you so much!
So pretty. It was a good call to leave those drawer pulls with the patina.
Thank you
Century is another very good name for furniture. The desk wasn't inexpensive when it was new. These were generally sold with a matching chair. Today, a Century sofa is in the 4 to 8 thousand dollar range.
You did buy low, but buying low is getting more difficult these days. You need to set your retail prices to reflect inflation. Remember, you can always come down, but you can't go up, although I have in certain circumstances. It's a PITA charge for those certain customers that are idiots believing that they deserve something for near nothing as if they are doing me a favor by buying from me.
Such great info! Thank you as always
It looks Beautiful! That wood is gorgeous. I appreciate your videos and you sharing. You don't have to explain your personal life to me.
Thank you for this
It's exquisite. You did fabulous job. ❤
Thank you so much!
Just beautiful ❣️
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely stunning. You made the wood sing. I am glad you also shared your problems with us so maybe we can learn.
Thank you
Good afternoon, Barry
Your work is amazing.
I think, you come back a live, on this table.
Congratulations!!!
😁😁
Thank you so much
Absolutely gorgeous desk. I feel your pain re the lacquer! In the end, mother nature controls our environment and sometimes there's just nothing we can do about it but cry, learn and fix it. Fantastic job regardless, especially when working out of your own shop!
Thank you for sharing this
just beautiful
Thank you!
I think your restoration process is still really great. You only learn from mistakes, but I didn't see any mistakes. It looked great to me.
Such a great comment
I guess the high humidity affected the spray on final coat. I'm sure it will turn out beautifully in your capable hands! Looking forward to Barbie's Worst Nightmare.
Thank you!
I hope all is well and your travels to VA provide peace to you. Such a nice shop yours and this one are so so over the top for comfort and beauty.
Thank you so much!
Amazing restoration, despite the blushing!
Unfortunately we have those unexpected problems but you always do great job nice work Barry
Thank you
Beautiful! It turned out great!
Thank you! 😊
Blooming, never had that one happen, thank goodness. Result is superb as usual. Thanks Barry.
What a stunning piece of furniture. Why would anyone want to paint it?👍🏻👍🏻
Great question
Interesting! I never considered that the ambient weather in an area would impact the choice of products you would use!
Me neither
Hello from France, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Another beautiful furniture restoration, and the final result is always impressive. Many thanks for sharing your work. Looking forward to the next time and a new project. See you soon. Pierre
Thank you Pierre
I still think that people that paint wooden furniture should be punished severely. I enjoyed watching you restore this desk. Thank you,
Thanks for watching!
Hi Barry, the desk looks great. But, I realize you have to be happy with your work. I would too. I’m sure your family member is very happy. The knobs look great. Always a treat seeing your videos. Thanks 😊 for always replying.
Have a great afternoon, Barry.
This turned out beautifully. I enjoy seeing all the real wood MCM furniture that is restored. I have been looking for a piece to work on myself. Thank you for sharing your passion for your work.
Thank you
still absolutely beautiful❤️
One of the first refinishing projects I ever did was a full size sleigh bed.
The previous owners had done an awful job of putting a faux antique finish on it.
As I stripped the paint off I got the surprise of my life. .
It was solid red mahogany wood, not veneer or plywood. The side rails were solid planks the slats that hold up the mattress and keep the side rails from spreading were maple.
It took me hours with dental tools to pick the paint out of the carvings which were covered by the thick layers of paint. .
I bought it at a Thrift store for $20 and sold it for $500.
It always astounds me that people take beautiful and valuable pieces of furniture and coat them with ugly paint
I love when others share stories. Thank you
The view in the back ground was just beautiful! This pieces turned out amazingly!
Thank you
Beautiful job
Thank you! 😊
Barry, that a beautiful desk. And you did a fantastic job of restoring it. That blush thing has happened to me a few times too and I remember panicing, because I didnt know how to fix it at the time. A friend told be about a spray on blush retarder, it worked beautifully and instantly. It looks as though you're someone's house that works on and collects mid century too? Thank you for posting your work. Love it.
Great feedback. Thank you for this
Amazing transformation. Such a classic looking piece. Truly enjoy your videos and thank you for putting in all of the effort to produce these videos for us to enjoy. We have a little bit in common, I'm a retired healthcare worker (radiation therapist) and have enjoyed the hobby of refinishing furniture for a few years now. I always learn something from your videos.
Is this in a relative's workshop? Nice cozy place! I really loved the de-construction parts of this video. Shows how very well made this piece was. And those brass knobs!! OMG, how beautiful. The end result - stunning. One of your very best, Barry.
That happened to some chairs of mine. Had to go away a few days, waited for less humidity as well. All the work …in the end everything was fine except having to do extra work!
I figured others would have feedback like this. Thank you
