  • This is a recent $14.99 thrift store find here in Wisconsin. It is a Mid-Century Modern Desk made by Century Furniture out of Hickory, North Carolina. I drove this piece to the state of Virginia and will enjoy restoring it there for a family member. This furniture restoration will involve stripping paint, sanding, staining and joint repairs. Enjoy the video! Thank you for all your support! Barry

It still a amazes me that you had no formal training in this area, but you sure taught yourself well! You are the best, and you explain all the procedures like a pro! Well done….again! 1970's. For extra cash, my grandfather used to make 6 foot Santa Claus and 6 foot candy canes out of half inch wood and sold them before Christmas. He made the local paper 3 times over the course of his life. I make a 5 foot Mrs. Claus. I cut it out, sand it, prime it and then trace the pattern on it. I sell them for $200. So if I make six, that's some handy cash for a hobby. I use the windfield collection for my patterns. This year, I'm working on Santa's elves. A friend help me cut them out and I can do the rest. This is working with wood and it's a great hobby. I've got 50 of them primed and ready for their final colors.
I LOVE doing 3 drawer dressers. Here's some tips my grandfather taught me. If you have a small ding or dent. put a drop of water on the bare wood. The wood will absorb it and swell and it fills in that ding.
For outdoor furniture or crafts he always use rustoleum oil based paints. Personally, I would never paint inside furniture. I will take an antique and when I am done, I get offered money for the restored pieces. I usually find a spot in my house but I can't keep them all.
For a few deals, always check your local flea markets. I got a ream of black tracing paper for two bucks. 300 sheets . You can buy sandpaper, paints and supplies. Lots of returns from Amazon and others has people marking craft stuff at walk away prices. I saw a pack of six artist brushes. My sister scanned the bar code and they were $24.99. They were $2 a set. They had cheaper ones which just work fine and I now own enough for a lifetime.

The humidity in the Summer and early Autumn is devastating and for someone with a heart problem and afib, it makes going out of doors for any length of time impossible. Thank the Goddess for AC. I have nothing against painting furniture. I have painted some of my own but not all furniture need paint to become gorgeous and refreshed. The pieces you are choosing are ment to be restored. Sometimes, painting is a shame and other times a necessity. Love for the piece is the component for a beautiful outcome. Thanks so much for sharing

I still fondly remember the beautiful shores of Lake Huron and walks along the beach. Now in Richmond Virginia I love the beautiful

Century is another very good name for furniture. The desk wasn't inexpensive when it was new. These were generally sold with a matching chair. Today, a Century sofa is in the 4 to 8 thousand dollar range.
You did buy low, but buying low is getting more difficult these days. You need to set your retail prices to reflect inflation. Remember, you can always come down, but you can't go up, although I have in certain circumstances. It's a PITA charge for those certain customers that are idiots believing that they deserve something for near nothing as if they are doing me a favor by buying from me.

Interesting! I never considered that the ambient weather in an area would impact the choice of products you would use!

I still think that people that paint wooden furniture should be punished severely. I enjoyed watching you restore this desk. Thank you,

Hi Barry, the desk looks great. But, I realize you have to be happy with your work. I would too. I’m sure your family member is very happy. The knobs look great. Always a treat seeing your videos. Thank you, Joyce/ Connecticut 🇺🇸❤️🙏P.S. I love your new boots. They look nice on you. You can wear them anywhere.

This turned out beautifully. I enjoy seeing all the real wood MCM furniture that is restored. I have been looking for a piece to work on myself. Thank you for sharing your passion for your work.

One of the first refinishing projects I ever did was a full size sleigh bed.
The previous owners had done an awful job of putting a faux antique finish on it.
As I stripped the paint off I got the surprise of my life. .
It was solid red mahogany wood, not veneer or plywood. The side rails were solid planks the slats that hold up the mattress and keep the side rails from spreading were maple.
It took me hours with dental tools to pick the paint out of the carvings which were covered by the thick layers of paint. .
I bought it at a Thrift store for $20 and sold it for $500.
It always astounds me that people take beautiful and valuable pieces of furniture and coat them with ugly paint

Barry, that a beautiful desk. And you did a fantastic job of restoring it. That blush thing has happened to me a few times too and I remember panicing, because I didnt know how to fix it at the time. A friend told be about a spray on blush retarder, it worked beautifully and instantly. It looks as though you're someone's house that works on and collects mid century too? Thank you for posting your work. Love it.

Amazing transformation. Such a classic looking piece. Truly enjoy your videos and thank you for putting in all of the effort to produce these videos for us to enjoy. We have a little bit in common, I'm a retired healthcare worker (radiation therapist) and have enjoyed the hobby of refinishing furniture for a few years now. I always learn something from your videos.

Is this in a relative's workshop? Nice cozy place! I really loved the de-construction parts of this video. Shows how very well made this piece was. And those brass knobs!! OMG, how beautiful. The end result - stunning. One of your very best, Barry.

That happened to some chairs of mine. Had to go away a few days, waited for less humidity as well. All the work …in the end everything was fine except having to do extra work!
