I’ve been moving offices so it was taking a bit of a break, and I still have some lighting tweaks to make, but overall I’m stoked about the full-background whiteboard. What do y’all think?! Nah, I've done it thousands of times in over a dozen cars and never had a problem. I've even done it in old clapped out cars with 170,000 miles on them and not had a problem. It's a very similar concept to doing a clutchless upshift on a motorcycle. You're really just unloading the transmission just enough to get it to shift gears. It doesn't actually do any harm when done properly.

Back when I drag raced my Evo IX, I powershifted all the time. But I had a no lift to shift patch added to the factory ecu. Once you touched the clutch pedal, the upper switch would activate and the rpm would drop a designated amount(operator set - normally about 1500 rpm). Then it would go into antilag creating boost. If your timing on shifting was good, you dropped the clutch at the same time as the antilag and you get close to full boost.
The advantage of it was that it allowed a slow down of the drivetrain which help synchro of trans reducing the impact force.

my driving instructor told me off for doing this on one of my lessons (I've never driven an automatic). I've been driving for years now though and I only ever keep my foot on the throttle when downshifting and all of my shifts are rev matched to reduce mechanical wear as much as possible and it also gives an incredibly smooth driving experience.
I've also noticed that there's a bit of throttle loiter so I generally lift off for a split second before engaging the clutch so the intake manifold pressure has time to drop and the revs will instantly start to drop when you press the clutch instead of having to wait that extra time while having the clutch is pressed in. If you do it correctly you feel no engine breaking because the clutch target is when the engine is just passing into the neutral power point (I like to think of my engines power production as "Negative, Neutral, Positive") and as I re-engage the clutch I press the throttle so the engine re-engages rev matched to the gear and back at a neutral power point. I find this technique is extremely smooth and you can barely feel the change in gears.

Cobb acessports allow you to set an rpm at which the engine bounces at when power shifting. This way you can rev up to 7200 rpm and setting the rpm to 6700 rpm it’ll drop and bounce at 6700 and when you shift the rpm drops to 65-6600 rpm. This makes a big difference in boost in turbocharged engines especially for cars with large turbos. When I do not power shift the boost drops 10-15 psi and with a large turbo takes a bit for it to spool back up. Na cars probably should not be power shifting but in turbocharged cars with large turbos it is almost vital to do so.

Aftermarket fuel management systems, such as the Holley Dominator system, allow you to connect one of their inputs to a clutch switch, and allow you to program it so that you can hold the gas to the floor, and when you depress the clutch, it cuts off fuel until you release the clutch pedal. This is intended to obtain faster shifts, but it also has the added benefits that there is less risk of damage from over-rev, and it allows the engine revs to come down for the next gear. Edit - I wrote this before I got to the part of the video where you talked about this LOL

I started driving in the '60's. In Street racing back then if you wanted to WIN you power shifted, just that simple. Off the line you can feather the clutch and be part throttle
because you want a little bit of wheelspin but you keep adding throttle as the tires will take it. You should have the pedal to the floor before the end of 1st. Once you
get it floored you NEVER lift till you cross the finish. And you don't disengage the clutch, you just brush the pedal enough to loosen the pressure plate so you can muscle to
the next gear with a big arm on the linkage. (that's why Muncie had brass synchro rings, so any shavings wouldn't damage the gears)

Very good, and I'm in complete agreement with you. Power shifting is going to be more effective with a vintage car or one that doesn't have a computer acting upon engine control. With a vintage car Power Shifting can be added-in with other effective means to make fast happen, such as the driver being fast off the line, and having an adept right arm. But I want everyone to know that there's a dangerous event that can happen during a drop-clutch launch, and Power Shifting. I'm not talking about loosing control of the car. It's the deaths and severe injuries that have happened when a flywheel isn't up to par. Flywheel bolts can shear and the flywheel itself can blow right out of the bell housing. The force is so strong that the flywheel will slice right through the floor of the car and go on from there. And there have been cases of decapitation. This primarily dates back to the 1960's-70's but it's not say the danger wasn't present after that period. I think most of these events took place when guys would build-up an engine but use a flywheel that's too weak for the power, or lame worn out bolts, or a flywheel without as many bolts as a heavy duty version would have. But this isn't to say it can't happen with a modern car. My suggestion is before using any racing techniques, it's going to be safest knowing what the mechanicals are in a given car, and determine if that car is up to how you're going to drive it.

This all depends on how your engine and your transmission ratios align. My toy will idle at 25mph in 5th. To get smooth shifts during light acceleration I have to half throttle every shift. It's all about rev matching.

  • @FrangoTraidor
    @FrangoTraidor 4 роки тому

Powershifting, also known as full-throttle shifting or flat-shifting, is a method of shifting used with manual transmissions to reduce the time where the driving wheels are not powered. Unlike a normal gearchange, in a powershift the driver does not let off the accelerator (unlike speed-shifting, where the throttle is let off very quickly, simultaneously depressing the clutch and shifting into the next gear, rapidly). The clutch is briefly depressed while the shift lever is rapidly shifted into a higher gear, keeping the engine in its power band. Keeping the engine in its powerband allows it to put down power quicker when the clutch is "dropped" and power returns to the transmission. In most cases, there is a method of cutting the ignition or fuel delivery, in a manner similar to a rev-limiter, which prevents the engine from over-reving when the load from the transmission is removed. Many aftermarket engine management systems provide this functionality as either a standard feature or as an option, usually combined with launch control.

You kill the clutch in the process as you point out, but it will result in quicker acceleration. And one might have to do this if competing against electric car in acceleration.

Question for normal daily driving. What I do is
Stopped at a light or whatever
    Give minimal gas
    Slowly and smoothly release clutch
Clutch out, gently roll onto the throttle for normal acceleration (not trying to be speed racer)
As the revs rise, smoothly roll off the gas to the point where I am no longer accelerating but not decelerating either. For numbers sake let’s say I’m at 3k RPM.
Clutch in, holding the gas pedal where it is at.
The revs don’t jump up, but fall at a slower rate then if completely off gas.
Pull the stick out of first into neutral, then to second.
Clutch released out smoothly. Rinse repeat.
My question is, is this as bad as power shifting when floored? Just going by feel, everything seems really happy mechanically. Shifts are smooth like butter and the synchros practically pull the gear stick out my hand where I can shift with only one finger.

I drive a 3/4 ton truck with a 5-speed manual transmission it also has synchronizers. In between every tooth of every year is a very tiny space. That space is utilized by acceleration one side of the tooth or deceleration the second side of the tooth. You can go from accelerating to decelerating and there's a space in between where it slips out of gear. This is is what the clutch does. Then once it's out of gear you either accelerate the engine to match the speed if your downshifting or that the RPMs drop for a higher gear. It's called rev-matching and slip shifting. I do it in semi trucks. They just don't have synchros. Most people driving a manual transmission don't understand rev matching

Only time you'd flat-shift with no clutch is when operating a vehicle with a sequential box and a powershift (ignition cut) switch, because sequential boxes generally have constantly-meshed gears. Watch Australian V8 Supercar racing (which use sequential boxes) or motorcycle racing (ditto), and you can see when they show a footwell shot (or rider shot), the driver doesn't lift anything (or operate the clutch). You can hear the unburnt fuel ignite when they release the shift lever and the ignition cut switch allows spark again-there is one heck of a bang...

The theory behind powershifting isn't to get a lurch between gears, or to cause a boost in acceleration. It's to minimize the amount of momentum loss during gear shifts, and honestly, if you're executing the shift quickly enough, the amount of additional wear is negligible. Quite frankly, if you're causing significant wear from powershifting, you're doing it wrong. But there isn't really much evidence behind powershifting in and of itself causing significant wear on drivetrain components. It's just simply more quick to shift that way, providing you're doing it correctly

There are people pulling out melted Pistons and Rods along with replacing heads if needed after every run. @@mobilePCreviews when set up properly it puts no more stress on the turbo than the engine does under full boost. True it can have issues if you just set the ecm to enable antilag without any tuning. I have a true als on the car that includes a pwm controlled bypass valve, egt sensor and turbo speed sensor, which is the correct way to have antilag but is expensive so no one goes to the hassle.

@@evil_me anti lag is literally sending an explosion into your turbo, that's what anti lag is, that's why you'll spire out of your exhaust pipe and keep the rpm up. The explosions coming from your pistons have to go through the head first which cools them down a little and smooths out the airflow before it hits the exhaust impeller on the turbo. With anti lag it's just an explosion happening in the exhaust manifold due to rich fuel conditions when off the gas. Saying anti lag doesn't hurt your turbo is like saying rallying your car doesn't hurt your suspension. Theres numerous articles talking about the damage anti lag does to your car, good tuning or not.

@Wing Phoenix, It's not the ignition within the turbo that's the issue. the main issue is turbos are not designed for that kind of abuse. it's the shockwave itself (and the extra heat) created right next to a turbine spinning at 100k rpms....with 1 flimsy bearing and 1 oil line. There is no way you can expect a turbo to live with that kind of heat and pressure being experienced. You are essentially creating a crude turbojet outside of the block with ALS.

@skifree Not sure if things really work that way, as people run 2steps on N/A engines as well. If a 2step has a measurable effect on an N/A engine, then I doubt there'll be much damage to the turbo in an actual turbo setup. Cleetus McFarland (check out his UA-cam channel), for example, has had a 2step on his 1500HP twin-turbo V8 for ages and never had a damaged turbo.

One of the most gratifying things that I have ever done in my long boring life was power shift from 3rd to 4th on the highway and chirped the tires going into 4th just as I was passing some dude in a BMW. I timed it so perfectly, that just as I was about to pass him, I was right about to redline and I power shifted into 4th. Redlining in 3rd gear on a 1990 mustang with 3:08 rear gears is going pretty darn fast so yeah, had to be at least 85 mph if I recall. Anyway, that would be one reason why someone may be compelled to power shift lol.

What a ridiculous idea. "Power" shifting sounds like something dreamt up by someone that has only ever driven in video games. If you have more than a couple of hundred horsepower it's a good way to lose traction. Let alone the added stress to your entire drivetrain and an annoying jerky change. I'd encourage a quick compassionate slap in the chops, and a brief "stop that doofus" if you ever catch someone doing it.

@Tilmann Giese LOL, yeah. Go back to Drift. Rallye drivers are extremely careful with throttle inputs. There is no way in hell you would ever catch one changing gear in this manner, unless it was a sequential computer controlled shift, and that is clearly not what "power" shifting is referring to.

@@Tilmann5138 Didn't you? I owned my first computer in 1982. Again, any professional driver doing WOT shifts will have a device, mechanical or electronic for cutting the throttle during changes to allow the revs to drop for a short period. That isn't what this video is referring to.

Powershifting is a MUST on drag racing. You never want the RPM to drop very much engine has to fight back through the RPM. If you are racing power shift this guy knows not what he is talking about.

It is a bad idea on a street driven car. Power shifting is very hard on a transmission and entire driveline. Drag cars are built to handle it, street cars are not.
