- I have been filming with a friend of mine in the wonderful and picturesque village of Cheriton in Hampshire - The Battle of Cheriton of 1644 - but's in a different video, coming soon!
After we filmed, I thought I would have a quick stroll around an dhave a look at the village in more detail and the lovely church. So let this video be a taster for the more detailed one coming soon about an early battle in the English Civil War that took place in the nearby fields in the 17th century.

Beautiful village. I love hearing the sound of running water, which looked crystal clear. Massive church when you consider the size of the village but I presume many years ago the population was much larger but with agricultural mechanisation and the importation of food agricultural jobs are long gone. Sad really but it’s good they have a village shop and the church was open 👍
The village shop was so helpful when I went in for some sandwiches.
That was a real treat, loved the thatched cottages and the stream, such clear water. Brilliant.
I live 8 miles away and have never been - I’m off there today with the dog 🐶 great video 😎
We were here on Monday, it’s beautiful. The water is so crystal clear. You saw more than we dud, we’ll have to go back 👍
Delightful Cheriton. It certainly is that Richard. There’s something about a village with a stream or river going through it. You were literally a stones throw away from the source of the Itchen. You’ve got to go back and try some of that lovely watercress and also the Flower Pots pub that’s in the village too, unless of course you had a swift half when you visited!! Lovely video and there’s definitely more villages like that around Hampshire.
I must go back and find the source and the watercress! :)
Beautiful place
It really is!
Thank you very much. My great grandmother was born and brought up in Cheriton in the 1850s.
I bet it was a lovely place then too! Probably had more life going on!
Thanks, as ever! Never been there myself, but I think Bob Copper mentions his time in this village in his book ‘Songs and Southern Breezes’. If I remember correctly he kept the village pub for a couple of years in the 50s and there is even an accompanying vinyl record of the local folk singers from the area (as well as some from Sussex). Must re-read and re-listen to refresh my memory.
Sounds like a good book and record you have there.
Nice little walk on a fresh sunny day. Why do these villages seem deserted lol ! Another great church with a beautiful stained glass window.
I know - they do seem deserted.
Everyone is working too hard to afford to pay for the houses to actually spend any time there.
Marvellous video Richard seen It twice. All the different architecture and especially the church. Robert, NZ
Oh it is lovely.
My 3 weight bamboo flyrod began rattling in its leather case the instant it heard that trout stream!!!
jeff kellison - it’s the source of the famous River Itchen, one of the top fly fishing rivers in the country
Yes, I bet it did.
Cheriton was an absolutely beautiful little town. So many wonderful cottages & a very lovely church! You must have been absolutely gaga over those thatched roofs?!?!
Btw...looking forward to your one w/ Julian on the battle!
The battle video will be out on Monday!
@@RichardVobes so....Sunday for me?!?!🤔😂😉
What a wonderful and peaceful village. A big church too - I wonder if its tower was reduced in height as it looks squat and is capped with bricks...
Lovely village.
I agree, a strange looking tower to the church.
I wondered that about the church tower. The steeple may have originally been made of wood, what do you think ?
Michael Angel - might have been - I’ll try and find out.
MrGreatplum I thought the same about the tower. I found some info about the church but no mention was made of alterations to the tower’s height.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the village school right next to the river. What a lovely place to start school life.
What a lovely town! The stream is so clear :) Environmental cleanness is at the top of the scale :)
So it would appear.
Watercress & Trout, sounds delicious & nutritious. Now if there were a farm with cream & potatoes you could make something truely beautiful. Maybe you could make meals using the things traditionally available in each village. Sort of a gastronomical, heritage, map of villages? Thankyou for showing us.
What a pretty village, so many thatched homes. An amazing church, never seen one with a red door. I wonder what the story is behind that.
I know how you love your churches.
Yes,a nice place. Storm.is here. Noisy.
That is indeed a loverly village, it would be nice if they all looked like that. Perhaps the Hampshire counsell is better that East Sussex! Great video well done 👍
Thanks, George.
As in all these lovely videos of Richard's we never see anyone in these villages with all their luxury cars parked in front of their thatched cottages and not a sign of life anywhere! I wouldn't mind betting that the occasional Range Rover or other SUV passing by in fact doesn't have anyone in it.
M.R.James must be having a field day up in heaven!
These places do seem devoid of life, sadly!
Is this shot on the GoPro 8 with the internal mic? Sound is great if it is and may persuade me to buy.
Yes go pro 8 and internal mic.
@@RichardVobes Thanks mate, you may have made me make up my mind :)
