I’m an American by birth, but English by heritage. I’ve been fortunate to visit England twice, but I never made it to Winchester so this was a wonderful video tour. Maybe some day …
I was born in Winchester and still lucky to live there to this day, I'm 35 now and live near the King Alfred statue, always finding out and seeing new things such a rich history.
On our last trip in 2017, we hired a driver from Salisbury to pick us up at Heathrow, drive us to see Winchester Cathedral and the Great Hall, before depositing us at our B&B in Salisbury. Money well spent as it would have been challenging to drive or park in Winchester as an American tourist. We knew after a few hours in Winchester that we should have allowed 2 days there since it’s such a lovely city and the people were so friendly. I want to encourage people to buy an English Heritage Pass, since it gives free admission to so many historic sites across England; we used it for 15 stops from Salisbury up to Northumberland. The sites you’ve visited (cathedral, historic museums, good pubs and lovely walks) are the same kind of sites we enjoyed. Now that my husband has passed, I still want to return on my own. Luckily the great train system, easy access to taxis and lovely people make this manageable for a single traveler. Thanks for this wonderful video!!
Yes English Heritage pass can be a good thing to get to save money and see many places if you are coming for a couple of weeks. Sounds like your last trip was incredible. Hope you do manage to organise a new trip to bring back memories and make new ones! All the best.

I visited in 1971, as a 16 year old, loved it. Although born in South Africa, ( conscripted and served in the SA Army ), always considered myself an Englishman.
I don't mind admitting that when I first saw the statue of Alfred The Great, it made me feel quite emotional. It was just so majestic. (That is when I visited Winchester one day. I absolutely fell in love with the city)
I thoroughly enjoyed this informative guided tour around Winchester where both myself and my family have lived for centuries. As a true Wintonian , this was a heart warming visit to all of my favourite places and running spots. Beautiful city with wonderful history and nature on our door step. @@tinawetzel3912 You should absolutely pay Winchester a visit Tina if the opportunity should ever arise, so much to enjoy and you would be very welcome.
Nice BGM at the beginning I just moved to England from Hong Kong now in Southampton and waiting another move to rental property in Winchester alot more heritage exists compare to Soton where being heavily bombed in WWII
I know Winchester well, was a Nurse there for 20 yrs, trained at the RHCH. Lived at the Westgate Hotel in 1957-1959. Grandparents were proprietors. Worth a Visit Winchester. The Eclipse has a Ghost Lady Alice Lisle from Mockbegger in the Forest.
I live about 20mins away by train & have visited Winchester quite often. My son and I once decided we would take a tour of the top of the tower of the cathedral, up an extremely narrow ancient stone spiral staircase, exhausting, but very much worth it, the view from the top was spectacular. Also, the Winchester Bible is not to be missed. An extremely beautiful place to visit.
OMG! I keep having to add locations to my next trip to England! If I lived over there I would never leave because it is perfection-the history, scenery & architecture just blows my mind. I can't wait to get back over there! Thank you for another great adventure!!!!!
There is a lot to see! Even if you live here it's hard to keep up with all the places you can go with special historic significance, or just too beautiful to miss. I am sure we will have more to add to your list soon!
We moved to Winchester in 2022 to downsize. We walk frequently to the centre in 20 minutes and back home (uphill) in 25 minutes. We absolutely love it!
This video makes me smile this is the real England 🏴 and it’s people no diversity in sight it’s wonderful and unspoiled. I live in Redbridge London at the moment but I use to live not far from Winchester when I was in Southampton it is indeed a beautiful part of England was born in Chichester and grew up just outside of Portsmouth.
Thanks alot for this lovely video,so many memories of dear England, having lived in Italy for 57 years, old the beautiful old buildings, the country life Just wonderful, thanks again love from Ann Italy 🇮🇹🇬🇧👍😉
By far the best channel for the English countryside - informative, coverage of beautiful places, and very calming way of narrating. Really enjoy your videos.
We are planning a three week visit to England this year in September, and Winchester, particularly the statue of one of my favorite ancestors, King Alfred the Great is on my must see list. Your video is going to serve as a guide for us. Thank you so very much for spending so much time on producing this.
If I might I’d love to make a recommendation of nearby marwell zoo! It’s maybe 20-25 mins drive from Winchester and it’s a lovely country zoo. I used to work there so I might be biased but I do recommend!
@@oscarward414 It's been 40+ years since the proprietress of my Bed and Breakfast in Winchester suggested a visit to Marwell. Always wanted to visit Gerald Durrell's Jersey Zoo but never managed it. Marwell was an excellent substitute. I'd second your recommendation.

My aunt Adela and my uncle Douglas came here to spend their honeymoon. Now I understand why. It is one of the nicest cities I have seen in my life, beautifully shown. Thank you very much, Great piece of filming.😊😊
Bypassed Winchester quite a few times this year travelling up and down the A34 & M3, didn't realise there was so much to see and do. Thanks for sharing.
Dont miss the Mizmaze on St Catherine's hill, the riverside walks or St Cross Hospital where you can get wayfarers dole ( free bread and beer 😁) ua-cam.com/video/9siBxun4yh0/v-deo.html
I've been to Winchester about 30 years ago. I remember being impressed by the magnificent architecture of the cathedral. I missed the old days. I would like to go there again if I have the opportunity.
Thank you - so much history in one beautiful town! I'm too old to visit now & retired in USA altho I am a Brit & learning so much about all the wonderful places I did not know about & will have to visit in my next life instead!
I lived in Winchester for three years in the early 1970's. I'm glad I got to be there when it was just a quiet town. I worked in an office on the second floor facing the High Street, and one day a circus parade came down the street complete with elephants. Another time on a quiet Sunday, I was at a launderette on a little side street, when all of a sudden, out of the blue, the Royal Gurkha Marching Band appeared in full regalia, playing away. They disappeared around the corner as mysteriously as they came. Winchester was kind of magical in that way. Also, I was mad for the custard tarts they sold at the old bakery next to the Butter Cross. I called it "custard tart fever." The fire station was right next to a pub called "First In Last Out." Whenever the alarm rang, the firemen all spilled out of the pub. That was long ago, so nobody can get in trouble. Our flat was near Tanner Street. We watched an excavation that revealed medieval tanning pits, so that was very satisfying. We could look down from our flat onto a little bit of the Itchen River and watch trout swimming around together with swans and ducks and their babies. Winchester was like a dream.
We live in Winchester and this film caught our eye for a viewing. We loved it, thank you! We love your calm and informative style, we’re now subscribed and look forward to enjoying more! Off to Lacock village with you now…….. ♥️
Hello Nicci, thank you what a lovely comment. So pleased someone local thinks we did a good job. What a wonderful place to live, so jealous! Enjoy Lacock, and thanks for joining us!
What a beautiful city, I go there almost everyday and you even managed to surprise me with that surviving section of Roman wall. A lovely and calming video, well worth 26 mins watching!!!
Ah thank you so much, glad we found something you did know was there. They do need to tidy up the plants around it so you can see it better. Easy to miss though on the river walk.
I lived in Winchester and got my PhD degree in political media from Winchester university. I enjoyed watching this video. It reminded me of my lovely moments I spent there. I will come to visit Winchester in early 2024 to say hello for the members of the university and some Wintonian friends. Thanks a lot for this video.
It certainly is ! I visit three times a year when I am fly fishing on the River Test. I have not visited Winchester yet but I will next time I visit and spend a day there. Visiting much of Hampshire is like stepping back in time. ❤️
So was I. In the 1950's it was a quiet market town. Two-way traffic on the High Street. Cars ran through the Westgate and it boasted two railway stations. The County Council offices had yet to be built.
Oh my. You two have made a beautiful video of a beautiful place. Music was so appropriate. My heart’s desire has been to go to the British isles most of my life but now it’s to late for me. I really appreciate your work so I and others can see such wonderful places. Thank you so much. Blessings
Many thanks...I am very fond of english history...in fact I might say today England( UK) is a mirror of its own history from roman times onwords, even the celts before Claudius 53 ad invasion....
I'm not from Winchester, but my family has roots from all over Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset (I was brought up in Fareham) so it's always been our capital and cultural focus.
my wife and I really enjoy watching your videos which are a great blend of photography, history and travel guide. doesn't matter where you go...... we always enjoy.
Very watchable! Been a long time since I was in Winchester - is amazing how many old buildings there are still being used today - just wonder how many of our constructions of the past 40-odd years will still be worth keeping & using in 800 + Years?!! Nice job!
Thank you for this, I live 15 mins away from Winchester and I do love it there, I am going there tomorrow to see my daughter and have a day out, and I will visit some of the areas you mentioned that I haven't been to yet.
Hello Carol, sorry to hear you have been unwell, I do hope you feel better soon. So pleased that you have been able to enjoy our trips with us. Take Care! Si & Will
Incredible tour!!! I didn't know how much historic sites had in Winchester. How well preserved places since the Roman times. I stayed fascinated. Thanks you for sharing with us such gorgeous views from city.
Oh, I loved it!!!! In 2019 I had the opportunity to know a little about this city. Unfortunately our time was short and I was astonished by the History of the Winchester Cathedral that most of our time was lost there and we didn't even see everything there!!!! We ran to the Great Hall and suddenly it was time to return to London😪. Hoping I may return to this city and see more about it! And, yes, as a admirer of Jane Austen's works, the cathedral was my first place to visit, but Winchester has many, many beautiful and interesting places to see and I thank you for sharing that knowledge with us and planting a wish for more.😍
Thank you for the lovely comment and sharing your experience. Yes many people come to see the grave of Jane Austen and miss out on all the other wonderful and historic features. A day really only touches the surface. We had a weekend there, but I am sure we missed many things. A place you can visit time and time again and never get bored!
Thanks so much for reminding me just how wonderful Winchester is-- I haven't been there since I was 20, so it's on the cards for my next British holiday.... whenever that may be!
i lived in Winchester and got mt PhD degree in political media from Winchester university. I enjoyed watching this video. It reminded me of my lovely moments I spent there. Beautiful video. I've been twice but with young Spanish students who weren't into all of this. Now I've seen all I missed in a very tastefully done presentation. Thank you.
Wow - this was great! So professionally done, so thorough, so detailed. I have only been in Winchester once; unfortunately it was in March 2020, and after only one night I had to fly home due to the pandemic. I had no idea there were this many things to do in Winchester. I'm hoping to be back there soon!
I’ve lived in Winchester since I was 5 and this video popped up on my home page. Brilliant video and really does show Winchester in its most beautiful form! If you do visit Winchester, don’t sit on the buttercross - According to local myth a witch put a curse on it in the Middle Ages which compels sitters to return time and time again to the city…not that I think that’s a bad thing!
I just love this vlog. I went to Winchester at Christmas and they had a open market. So festive and I will never forget it. You are so correct, the wonder of Winchester and their beautiful buildings! Not to mention the history along with Winchester Cathedral (alone worth the trip) just so impressive, thank you so very much!
Yes the Christmas market is excellent. Visited a number of years ago. Very busy but some great stalls and very festive as you say. Glad you liked our tour around the city.
Sorry had to comment on this, I live in Winchester and sure the Christmas Market is good, you missed out on the Ice Rink thats typically there as well because of Covid it wasn't put up, but god this city is not at all what tourists see, its a trash panda town haha
@@joescott5825 Yes i have lived here all my life its brilliant when sunny and in the center. Not quite as beautiful in the suburbs and estates. The christmas market is amazing but pricy. great for an evening walk. so sad the fudge store wasnt here this year
Thank you for the wonderful memories. I ended a very memorable Jane Austen trip with friends in Winchester 15 years ago,and stayed and extra night. I am so glad I did because I had such a wonderful time roaming around Winchester and fell in love with the city. I saw many of the sites you showed, and it as such a delight to see it all again. I loved Hampshire, and love that I live in the state named after it, New Hampshire, US.
Hello, what a lovely comment, so nice to hear that you have visited and remember these places bringing back memories. I guess you will have seen and watched our other Jane Austen videos? In a few weeks we have a few more that touch on Jane when she visited Derbyshire, so look out for those! What a coincidence you are in New Hampshire! Greetings from London.
I am so pleased to see another video from you guys! I thought Winchester was very charming and very well maintained! It's the sort of place that I would be happy to live if that were possible! Extremely interesting and educational! The cathedral was absolutely beautiful! Well done indeed again! Thank you!
You can't compare them! They are both stunning but York is the prettier I felt and kind of feminine, with all its intricate stonework inside and out. What caught my eye too were the tapestry kneeling mats, all made by locals, just gorgeous. I visited York in 2019 but grew up in Winchester. My best friend's dad was a verger there so know Winchester cathedral intimately. It is grander and more of a giant than York. Both have wonderful appeal.
There is also an awesome viaduct you can walk along or cycle over. Apparently they took the Tour of Britain bike race over it during a stage. It's located about 3 miles south of the city centre near the park & ride. Also St Martha's hill is once of the best viewpoints to see the entire city.
Thank you very much for this video again. What a wonderful place to visit. ...It was gorgeous, to stay there and now to remember it again. Definitly place to see in GB and we go there again...👍👍👍👋❤
So much nostalgia watching this. Lived there with my husband when we were first married and I went to university there. Truly a lovely corner of England. When we lived there, it was possible to have a guided tour of Winchester boy's school and St. Cross Hospital.
Thank you for this video, I attended college here for 2 years and although I liked Winchester, I never truly saw the beauty in it until recently. People in Hampshire have either a Southampton or Portsmouth identity, instead I say I’m from Winchester because its a place to be proud of, and videos like this prove it! With our current government I am ashamed to be British, but videos like this make me remember that we have some great qualities.
Have worked in Winchester on and off for the last 20 years and I still found things you showed that I was not aware of!! I agree it is a very walkable city and you csn see and feel the history around you. My only warning is it is a steep walk from the bottom to the top of the High Street!
Hi Barry, glad you hear we have shared somethings you have not seen. I am sure we missed things as well, there is a huge amount to take in. Yes the High St is steep if you walk it in one go. If you zig zag the side streets to stop and views things it makes it easier and less noticeable.
Another brilliant video, Winchester is one of my favourite places to visit when in the UK. I am hoping to visit again in the not too distant future. Thank you for posting you both do such a good job, it’s very relaxing watching what you produce. Keep up the good work 🐨🦘🐨🦘😷
I didn't think that places like this exists any more in the UK. I have been to York, and have seen how much it's been modernised. Then even with Cambridge, and then Windsor. Windsor really showed me that, some of the older buildings have been kept quite well. This place is beautiful. It's P&G Wells ! That name from the Yellow Page advert !
Yorks been like that since the 1970s/1980s and even before that.. though , but if you want to blame anyone blame .. The Victorians they knocked down a lot of the wall. but at least York still has more history still around on display then most citys and towns in the UK , it still has its castle walls
I’m an American by birth, but English by heritage. I’ve been fortunate to visit England twice, but I never made it to Winchester so this was a wonderful video tour. Maybe some day …

@@tinawetzel3912 You should absolutely pay Winchester a visit Tina if the opportunity should ever arise, so much to enjoy and you would be very welcome.
Nice BGM at the beginning
I just moved to England from Hong Kong
now in Southampton and waiting another move to rental property in Winchester
alot more heritage exists compare to Soton where being heavily bombed in WWII
I know Winchester well, was a Nurse there for 20 yrs, trained at the RHCH. Lived at the Westgate Hotel in 1957-1959. Grandparents were proprietors. Worth a Visit Winchester. The Eclipse has a Ghost Lady Alice Lisle from Mockbegger in the Forest.
saw this pop up and had to check it out :) was a choir boy in the cathedral some years back and brings back a lot of memories haha
I am sure the view from the tower is amazing. They had not tickets left on the day we visited. I think it gets booked up!
Indeed. IT is absolutely joyous
It ain’t that great
@@zoeblampey2705 Oh yes it is, and more.
We can't wait to have you back! :) 🏴❤
We moved to Winchester in 2022 to downsize. We walk frequently to the centre in 20 minutes and back home (uphill) in 25 minutes. We absolutely love it!
Lovely place to live, always try to pay a visit when in Hampshire.
Such a magnificent city! Absolutely recommended.
I really hope it remains unspoiled! Too many malignant people and their culture.

As an American of British descent this really pulls on my heartstrings! Such a charming Old World cathedral town.

We are planning a three week visit to England this year in September, and Winchester, particularly the statue of one of my favorite ancestors, King Alfred the Great is on my must see list. Your video is going to serve as a guide for us. Thank you so very much for spending so much time on producing this.
Thank you for watching and commenting, hope you have a wonderful time!
If I might I’d love to make a recommendation of nearby marwell zoo! It’s maybe 20-25 mins drive from Winchester and it’s a lovely country zoo. I used to work there so I might be biased but I do recommend!

Had my first trip to Winchester today. It was a wonderful trip with so much to see and so much history.
My aunt Adela and my uncle Douglas came here to spend their honeymoon. Now I understand why. It is one of the nicest cities I have seen in my life, beautifully shown. Thank you very much, Great piece of filming.😊😊
So nice to share it with you.
Bypassed Winchester quite a few times this year travelling up and down the A34 & M3, didn't realise there was so much to see and do. Thanks for sharing.

I am glad we can share it with you in some way even if you cannot come and visit again.
I also loved the miniature city layout as depicted in the Victorian era. Fascinating!
It was very detailed and clever.
Wow, so interesting. I first visited Winchester 40 years ago. Must get back for another visit.

Really appreciate your mentioning the side street, "look up" & the ancient pub. Wonderful ❤

I was born there, and it is lovely and historic and as stated was once the capital of Wessex and England Hampshire really is gods own county!
Fareham boy, so I have to agree with you.
Went for another visit on Sunday. Sunny and beautiful. I went to most of these places and also some of the amazing old pubs! Beautiful city.
Wonderful sounds like you had a good old time! 😊

One of the most beautiful places Ever
It certainly is an amazing city for the history and architecture 😊

Thank you Heidi, what a shame you did not get more time there. Hope you do make it back soon!
Thank you for the lovely comment and stories of the past! Great to hear. So pleased you liked our tour of a wonderful city.

I live here! Definitely recommend, so much history and scenery that I've never fully appreciated
I am so pleased to see another video from you guys! I thought Winchester was very charming and very well maintained! It's the sort of place that I would be happy to live if that were possible! Extremely interesting and educational! The cathedral was absolutely beautiful! Well done indeed again! Thank you!
I think the only Cathedral I think can top Winchester is York. They are amazing! Glad you liked it as always.
Never tired watch it again and again, looking back to details I’ve lost trying to listen and look to but drifting somewhere else, thank you
Excellent thank you 👍
There is also an awesome viaduct you can walk along or cycle over. Apparently they took the Tour of Britain bike race over it during a stage. It's located about 3 miles south of the city centre near the park & ride. Also St Martha's hill is once of the best viewpoints to see the entire city.
I think you referring to the Hockley Railway Viaduct, great catch. Thanks for the extra information.
Your video makes me want to visit Winchester again and see the sites I missed. Thank you.
I hope you make it back. Always something new to discover 😊

I visited this beautiful town recently and I really enjoyed my meal at Pitcher and Piano, near the bottom of the high street! :P
I'm in absolute awe! Never knew any of this. One great city to visit!
So glad we could share it with you!
Thank you for watching glad that we have shared something you have enjoyed and learnt something from. Very kind of you to say.

Its not that steep!....more of a gentle rise, its no mount snowdon!.....

Such a lovely comment, thank you so much.
