    Bang On! Mr. Rick Engman was doing all my lapping for years and never had a failure. He warned me that it is super important to hand polish them after the lapping has been completed. Regardless of who or how they were lapped or grinded, the hand polish must be performed!

    Do we really want a smooth surface? Honing in piston engines is a science now with the use of profilometers and careful attention is paid to the RVK vs RVP. It seems their goal is deep valleys with the peaks knocked down to produce plateaus between the valleys. This seems to provide the best oil retention. They're also coating the rings, have you tried coating the side and corner seals?
