I think the anti southgate brigade need a reality check. This man has led england to the best set of results at a major tournament...twice in 3 years ... sincd 1966. Thats nearly 60 years. To those they say England had easy draws, well you play the cards youre dealt, the same applies to every team that has played at an international tournament ever. Youll also need a fair bit of luck too. Players on Friday were holding back, not wanting to go 100% as its just a friendly.
Castigate him if he presides over a humiliating defeat like iceland in 2016, but he deserves respect for what he has achieved with England. Also the english need to drop their entitlement to win every tournament they enter. Prior to southgate the england team had not done anything of note on the world stage, except italia 90 and euro 96, in nearly 60 years. Other countries have since surpassed them, mainly France and Spain during that time.
At best they should aim for deep runs at tournaments and if they win, theyve exceeded expectations.
Only when they start to actually win tournaments can they claim entitlement to trophies.

Why is everyone so negative about Gareth I just don’t get it. Surely getting us further in tournaments than any manager in donkeys years means he deserves a bit more support? Who exactly would you prefer was in charge.

@@chelskiblue4730that was for 2-2 we still would have gone on and lost the game. The other comment here is correct we’ve had easy draws come on! Every time we’ve come up against a big hitter we’ve lost. We beat the worst Germany team in history in our home stadium that’s it. Also Southgate did the exact same thing in the Italy final as he did in the Croatia semi final. That alone was a sackable offence and that’s before getting to bringing on two players to take penalties in a euros final and to top it all off asks a teenager in Saka to take the 5th penalty who’d never taken a penalty before!! Unbelievable. 🤦🏼♂️
Previous England teams have had easy draws rgey didn't win , I do think he could have made earlier changes in the Italy game, but you still don't know if it would have changed the result, although you feel it could as we were just getting deeper, as for Saka, he was one our best pen takers and he was happy to take one so you can't blame him for that, on another day perhaps, he has hardly missed since, but pens can go either way
Bet your the type of person what rewards 97th place with a medal.
I must admit that I'm shocked Grealish has been left out, considering the number of assists he makes for England.

We've had new managers, Eriksson to Capello, McClaren to Hodgson, to little avail. Southgate has gotten the closest to achieving something with the players - the WC semi in 2018 vs Croatia (first time since penalties vs West Germany in Italia '90), and the Euro final in '21 vs Italy.

I’m Scottish, but the fact the English fans are so fickle when it comes to players being chosen is mental. If he had done this at the start of his reign and showed some balls dropping out of form players, and playing more attacking players you would have won something by now. His last tournament and he’s going balls to wall, this is your year I reckon.

Ben White would 100% be a starting cb (alongside John Stones) in this squad.. Southgate, and in particular his backroom staff, have seriously messed up, because that defence does not look strong at all.
We are going to get peppered! Also, wait for Danny Mills to come out in full force, demading he stays in the position with a fit and healthy squad with more depth in each position!

Ben White clearly has the wrong attitude to be part of a national squad. I'd take Joe Gomez or Marc Guehi over him any day of the week. Not sure how you can say Southgate has messed up considering it was White who didn't want to be part of the squad.

@@slimjim5392 statistically , Roy Hodgson couldn't get out of the group stage in the WC with a much better squad. Sven Goran Erikson and Capello couldn't make a semi final with a golden generation, Lampard, Gerard , Scholes , Beckham, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole x2 etc. MacLaren couldn't even qualify for a major tournament , likewise Graham Taylor failed qualification to USA 94 , so statistically he has been very successful

If your definition of success is purely winning tournaments then you’re going to be disappointed as a football fan. what is it - 32 teams that participate in a tournament? They can’t all win. Semi, final and quarter final exit to the best team in Europe are all respectable. Not to mention better than any other manager has managed in 50 years. I’m not saying he’s the perfect man but there is nobody realistically available who could do better given the circumstances.
Gareth deserves alot of credit for making brave decisions, and confounding his silly critics, who mostly know nothing about football.
Still cannot forgive him for the Croatia Semi Final and Italy in the final, massive MASSIVE opportunities we missed because of his tactics

Give your pad a couple of licks of paint, so that you can say 'I told you so ' afterwards, rather than watching a team reacting to someone whose knowledge of what is actually happening, is far greater than yours in his implementation.

Grealish draws fouls, attacks and is forward thinking. Bowen, runs around a lot, but with no end result! I don't reckon Shaw should be going either. He'll play and could get injured immediately. Mitchell should have gone as a backup.
When were fouls a good thing? Grealish slows play down. England play their best football at pace.

Harry is one of England ' strongest CB according to Gareth and Ten hag prefer not to play him for Manchester United. That is curios.
Maguire's a decent player but he doesn't suit a modern expansive football. If you need him to guard a box from incoming crosses he's excellent. If you want to push the defence to the half way line, he's awful.

Jarad should be there instead his stats over the season are better. I don't think Ivan Toney deserves to be there over Dominic solanki, as when he came he hardly did anything compared to solanki's 21 and 4 assists. I'm not feeling for Wharton ahead of Maddison, and Eze is decent, but would have preferred Rashford. Wharton and Eze are new names giving a new breath of air to the squad, but Wharton has been three months laying for Palace from Blackburn, I haven't seen enough for his inclusion yet. And Luke Shaw? Ahead of a more established Chilwelll? I don't see much in Guehi, more a liability, ahead of Branthwaite.
Forward line looks interesting - Toney, keen to show more since coming back to football. Palmer, POTS Foden, Gordon, Bellingham fresh from CL glory, and damn useful, and Kane. Bowen is tenacious and Watkins in good form for goal. Saka can come through at times on international duty, all about serving these guys with plenty of balls to keep them moving and trying.
Our starting defence should, and will most likely, be Walker, Dunk, Stones, Gomez. Midfield of Gallagher, Rice, TTA. Forward line of Foden, Kane, Saka. Saka just ahead of Gordon. You realise Foden, Saka, Bowen AND Palmer are left footers? Makes a difference? It's also interesting to have a Henderson in the squad, in the end, just not a Jordan one. Dean's been a good keeper, deserves to be in.
Wharton is class and is exactly the player we need. I hope he starts or plays his way into the team. Our defence will likely be Walker Stomes Konsa and Tripper for game 1

At top level you need individual game changers, even from bench when things in the balance, and Grealish can do that! Southgate only makes Grealish in squad to keep fans n media off his back, then dumps him! I predicted this week's ago! As a Villa fan 40+ years who "suffered" Southgate as Captain, I know his mind, and I can tell you England will not win a Trophy under Southgate, he thinks like an accountant , plays by numbers, and just doesn't have the tactical flexibility or courage to win. He prefers caution over taking the hand brake off! 🤨

Football ain't for you. Bowen is a player who has had a good season at West ham.. Watkins is the highest scoring english. player from the prem.. mainoo has had a major role for a poor united team.. Wharton has literally gone from playing championship football to dominating a Liverpool and man united midfield in 6 months.. konsa has been solid and helped villa to champions league football.. As a Liverpool fan trent is not a midfielder and this could destroy his confidence. He's a great passer but he's many flaws which will get exposed in the big games
Trent was doing this on Monday and seemed OK, scored well (though I do believe he was aiming to get the ball across goal than on target). Think TTA is OK from midfield position, sine he is mostly comfortabl and assisting from there than from RB. Besides, would like him on the pitch as well as Walker, or, to a degree, Trippier.
