The Charleston (1923) - Piano Solo

- My friend Sterling Mosher III asked me to play this famous 1923 song by James P. Johnson, the father of stride piano. You have probably heard of the Jazz Era style of dance bearing same name, which this song was intended to go along with. My arrangement is based on QRS piano roll #3143 (I used yukimatsuri's transcription as a guide: • James P. Johnson : Cha... ) and the original sheet music.
Sterling posts recordings of vintage music on his UA-cam channel, including his own performances: / jamespricejohnson
This video was recorded with two Line Audio CM4 condenser microphones, an Audient iD14 audio interface, and a Panasonic Lumix G7 camera.
Whenever I hear the Charleston played, I can't stop thinking of the scene from It's A Wonderful Life where Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart are on the dance floor in the gym and then the floor opens and they fall into the pool underneath and just keep dancing....lol
They are really cutting a rug in that scene! When everyone starts jumping into the pool, all I can think about is how their nice clothes are probably going to be ruined.
100 years ago and still people like it... the nowadays music will be forgotten within the end of the month!
Very true!
You're not the only one to transcribe the original James P. Johnson piano roll, Ruben Heyes made a stunningly accurate transcription of the roll that is actually playable hahaha! Sterling is a great pianist I've heard so I finally have to check him out!
I used Yukimatsuri's transcription of Johnson's piano roll for parts of my arrangement. While it is very accurate, it does feel a bit awkward to play (at least for me). Sterling is an amazing pianist! Very talented, not to mention a wonderful person.
Oh my gosh! Just wonderful!
Like a 1920s time machine! Wish we could travel back to those days of early jazz and Maxfield Parish prints! Top notch video, as usual! Like the projector scratches on your “print”! Thanks!
Thank you, Nick! Apologies for my late reply. Yes, I wish we could go back in time and witness the '20s and '30s music in person! I'm grateful that UA-cam has so many records and videos preserved on it.
@@RetroPianist Thanks for your response! Certainly no apology needed; I’m sure you are occupied with other things besides UA-cam. I’m really intrigued with how sophisticated the music got into the ‘20s and ‘30s. Edison started making electrical recordings that were spectacular and ironically ended right before the 1929 crash. Anyway, keep up the good work and thanks again!
Back here for another “fix”! Hope you’re well! -N
Wow, awesome performance of these forgotten tunes!
Thank you, Serge!
Awesome performance of these forgotten tunes!
Fantastic job!! 0:23-0:27 reminded me of Chopin’s 2nd piano Sonata. 🤣
Leave it to you to find a Chopin reference 😆 But I think I do hear the resemblance! That Chopin sonata is so beautiful, as is all his work.
Such a lively and delightful piece! lovely playing as usual :) thanks for this
Thank you for your kind words 🙂
I felt like I had time slipped 💫Great performance🎹
Thank you 😊
Keep practicing!
Discipline before all else!
Don't be afraid of scales; make THEM afraid of YOU!!
Do not be overjoyed by even sincere, well meaning over-flattery.
hahahaha
Great performance of a difficult transcription. Those piano rolls were not always cut in one go and most likely at a slower tempo!
Thank you, Steve. You are definitely right about many piano rolls having extra notes added so that they are not really able to be played by one person. I certainly found this transcription of "The Charleston" very challenging!
It's a very nice performance!
Thank you 😊
Wow, nice✨🎶💐
All you need is the old two-bulb Tiffany stained glass shade table lamp in the background...
Very Nice !!
Bravo
Super
You did quite an excellent job with this! It's so much fun to listen to you perform this nearly 100 year old song
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed my rendition. It's still a popular song and there are many great performances of it on UA-cam.
✨Oh this is so pretty!! You play so beautifully! I love these old tunes! ✨ 🌲 This is great, a big thumbs up from me! ✨ Bravo! 👏👏 Wishing you happy holidays! ❄⛄ ✨
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. Happy holidays!
I’m “Flapper-gasted”! 😄😎
Good one! 😃
