Fun fact the mystique costume in both the original and the new x men movies are no clothes just blue latex for the texture and blue body spray and nothing else
The X-Men's creator Stan Lee has always been vocal about mutants being an allegory to the struggle of minorities and groups of people who have been "othered" in our society. The original, most obvious parallel was to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's and the struggle of African-Americans, as Stan has said that Charles and Erik were based on MLK Jr. and Malcolm X. But, to many in the 90's and 2000's, the parallel between mutants and the LGBTQ+ community was very apparent, and director Bryan Singer has stated that they put the line "Have you tried not being a mutant?" into the movie specifically to show that connection.
Stan created mutants to avoid having to make a reason why people kept getting powers. It wasn't until Claremont that kind of things was brought in. Originally Magneto was a cackling villain, straight-up, nothing good about him. It's one big ret-con
Wrong, He gave the XMen mutations because it would save him giving them individual origin stories. He jumped on the racial/lgbtq wagon to make him look good.
I remember seeing this in theater's with one my close friends that was a huge wolverine fan since comics, even had a wolverine guitar lol... anyways when wolverine stabbed guy against the fridge I'll never forget his reaction and everyone in the theater, we were all saying yessss! Him Freaking out lol.
X2 was the favourite of the trilogy for me. It set the bar then and it technically has not been beaten or matched until First Class, then if going sideways for that infamous c--k shot got to say Deadpool with with his Deadpan humour gets up there too. As for the ending? Still hits home.
Russian Roulette Edging was the funniest thing in this video I feel like that’s the best joke you’ve ever made x-men is one of the best series I’ve seen so far I watched them a very long time ago and barely remember any of them but I remember loving some movies and hating some of them because the plot was boring or too predictable and now rewatching them and reacting to your reactions has just made me get into this world even more and I love it so much! Enjoyed your reactions to these movies!! ❤
I watch a good number of reactors, and I really think you and Meg Mage have had the best reactions to and discussions about these X-Men films. These movies have such great acting and emotional touch points, and hit on pretty tough subjects, and I love seeing you and others get down into it. Too many people, even life-long fans, seem to gloss over what I see as such a vital and central part of the franchise. Thanks for putting these out there, KL
Charles is a much more powerful telepath than Jason. Charles telepathy is almost limitless while Jason can only cast illusions. The only reason Jason was able to manipulate Charles is because Charles telepathy was blocked by the devise on his head.
If you want to explore more of Stryker’s character I highly recommend X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills (1982) by Chris Claremont. This novel is the first appearance of Stryker who in the comics is a controversial preacher and televangelist. He does have a military background thanks to him serving in the army reaching the rank of sergeant and after X2 (2003) the comics hinted at him having some small involvement with Logan and the project behind his Adamantium skeleton but not to the level we see in the movies where he's the one behind everything. If you go back and read the origins of Wolverine there's zero involvement of Stryker so this is all a creation of the movie. I imagine this change was done to avoid controversy, focusing more of his military side and just forgetting about him being a controversial preacher and televangelist two elements that would've cause alot of people to get upset. But regardless the film did a good job with showcasing this differant version of the character.
Oh, yes, Bruce Davison (Senator Kelly) was told to walk differently in this movie to hint at being Mystique. That was in the director's commentary on the DVD. You're the first reactor I've seen who caught it. Good eye.
I don't know if you did it intentionally, but the LED lights behind you in Red and White were a good representation of Charles looking at all the humans and mutants when using Cerebro. Love the reactions by the way.
I'm not sure if you recall, but you saw a more comic accurate version of Colossus (the big metal guy) in the Deadpool movies but this is the first time we saw him
For the early New X-Men days this version is probably more accurate. He spent most of his non-action time as a 6'4" human and when he turned to metal he didn't become gigantic, just a 6'4" metal guy. I didn't read much past the original Dark Phoenix story line so he probably became more like the Deadpool version after that.
I always felt bad for Lady Deathstrike. She was under mind control fighting the X-Men, and came back to herself just as she got pumped full of Adamantium, and since she's got the healing factor she'll never die - just live as a permanent statue unsure how things came to that situation...
The screaming mutant is Siren and the metal mutant is Colossus who is Russian in the comics. Siren is the daughter of Shawn Cassidy/ Banshee. He has Sonic scream abilities.
Great reaction like always. The basis for this movie was a graphic novel, "God Loves, Man Kills". It was changed a lot but the basic plot is still there. great story. From back when 'graphic novel' was both a specific publishing format and indicated a story meant to be for a more mature audience (in terms of more sophisticated themes and pacing that might be 'boring' for kids used to 'bright colors punch punch' type comics). The lake shot at the end was a huge teaser for fans of the comics. It's kinda hard to make out if you're not looking for it, but a Phoenix begins to appear on the water, and a Fun trivia: In the comics, Mystique *the shapeshifter) was married to a man of prominence and hid her mutant nature until she couldn't hide it when their son was born. That son had inky black skin, horns and a tail. That son was Nightcrawler aka Kurt Wagner (Vahg ner for rough pronunciation) who is the teleworking mutant we see in this movie. The woman with adamantium bones and claws was a rendition which doesn't hold up to the comic character Lady Deathstryke/Deathstrike. Keep up the good work.
X2 is a fun time, revisitng the 2000's Xmen movies makes me re-appreciate them. Oh and Toad isn't gone, guess he was supposed to appear in X2 but the actor, Ray Park, couldn't due the scenes due to scheduling. Love the reaction.
At the time of it's release. X2 was definitely one of the best superhero movies. The intro with Nightcrawler definitely started off the movie on a high note. The rest of the movie has great action and story throughout. I do feel they sold Yuriko/Lady Deathstrike (Stryker's "assistant")as a character short. In the comics, she has a long history with Logan/Wolverine that could have been explored or at least alluded to. Also, I really love the actress who played her (Kelly Hu). I so wish that they hadn't killed her off 💔 Such a missed opportunity. Rebecca Romijn kills it again as Mystique per usual. Shr portrays Mystique the best in my opinion. Loved Wolverine, Magneto, and Prof X as always. Can't wait for you to watch the next few X-Men movies
It looks like Lady Deathstrike is making an appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine, with Kelly Hu reprising the role. I hope they give her something interesting to do.
You're gonna have a good time with this X-Men journey. Your reaction for X2 is my favorite! I find myself wanting you to rush and see my favorite X-Men films, but that's not how it works. You've got...well, you said you saw both Deadpool films, so you've got 9 films in total left. Logan is hands down the best film in the series, so, can't wait for that one. You're the best! ❤
So the way Nightcrawlers powers work is he's actually going into another realm and moving to the location he wants to then popping back out in our world. I hope you plan to watch X-men 97 at some point. As some of the mutants powers here are not done full justice to what they're capable of, I think due to budget back in the day. You can probably find a highlight reel or something to catch up if you don't wanna watch a old cartoon from the 90s'.
Youve mentioned before about wanting to actually read some comics. God Loves Man Kills is what they based this movies script off of and is well worth your time to read it
Hi from Edmonton! Love the Alberta love! I said this on Cassie's livestream for X-men, I saw X-Men in a packed theater on opening day in Edmonton and when they introduce Logan "somewhere in Northern Alberta" comes on the screen, a guy in the back row says out loud, "I know that place that's Barrhead!"
If you're falling in love with X-Men, I can't recommend X-Men '97 on Disney+ enough. It is peak Marvel right now. Best thing they've done since the Infinity Saga. But this is my favorite of the OG X-Men trilogy. Nightcrawler and Stryker were perfect. Brian Cox is such a good actor. One of the best comic book villains we've gotten!
Good to see you enjoyed doing the reaction. I don't blame you for your crush on Hugh Jackman (definitely a man crush) I loved the allegories in this movie for different issues too and seeing you introduced to NightCrawler. You really took things in and seemed very interested in what was happening and I appreciate that. I did watch the first movie again with Cassie and Carly (popcorn in bed) but definitely waited to see the 2nd one with you. We re all mutants, all unique and judged for things we can't control like our race, sexuality etc. Solid reaction
when you really know magnetos range and power I'd put him up there with one of the powerful mutants, but also leave it up to Hugh to steal the show. I'm dreading the day we lose any and both of Ian and Patrick for how their roles have influenced us who watched them
Hey KL. I've been waiting for this, good to see you. This is based on the famous X men comic, God Loves Man Kills. And returning with another XMen movie, give a like for KL L L L. See you in a bit
Fun facts: In the comics Mystique is the mother of Nightcrawler, and Rogue is her adopted daughter, so Rogue and Nightcrawler are siblings. The X-Men cinematic universe is basically just Wolverine and friends, Professor X, Magneto, Mystique and Deadpool are pretty much the main focus of the movies. I can’t wait for the next reaction.
What survived in all adaptations is prof x and magneto’s dynamic. They were never good v bad, they are both mutants fighting for mutant rights. But one believes in coexistence and one who doesn’t. The x-men as a comic and faction always operated in the grey area of being outsiders and protecting humans that fear and hate them. While Avengers and others are unambiguously heroes or villains, no nuance required.
In case it wasn't mentioned before, Alkali Lake was filmed between the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes in the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park near Kananaskis, Alberta
While my favorite of the first 3 X-Men movies, some of the characters get short changed because Wolverine is the star . They also changed some of the characters like making Iceman/Bobby younger so he and Rogue could be a couple. Some of the important X-men only get cameos .
Have you seen True Blood? Anna Paquin was also great in that show. Another show mostly worth checking out. Especially the first half of the show. The 2nd half goes a little off the rails for many people but I mostly enjoyed it personally.
When I saw this in the theater, someone in the audience called out "Hi, Mom!" when Nightcrawler and Mystique were about to talk in the forest. Some of us laughed, but obviously most of the audience didn't get it. 🙂
This was a fun movie. I really think that Rebecca Romijn did a great job as Mystique. I also enjoyed Bruce Davison... as Mystique. Kelly Hu also made an appearance... as Mystique. Alan Cumming even had a voice acting line... as Mystique. Brian Cox, Alfonso Quijada, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, and even Hugh Jackman all put on a great show... as Mystique. Gosh, what percentage of the time in this movie was Mystique played by someone other than Rebecca Romijn? 😂
This is a heads-up, not a spoiler... the next movie has a credits scene. Don't want to miss that. Bonus points if you can identify the portion of the movie that the credits scene relates to lol.
What do I like best about this movie? Hmmm... Nightcrawler, for sure. While I don't know that it's better than all 4 Avengers movies, I do really love Magneto's escape. Especially that look of sardonic glee on his face. Now, my question is... why can't he use just the regular iron in folks' blood? I mean... c'mon! What else? Hmmm... Mystique being Mystique, I guess. It's a good follow up to X1. I agree with you that the opening credits give a Sam Raimi Spiderman vibe. I think it was just the times. But, they were good times. Thank you for the watch, as always. And, thank you for the Alberta travelogue. I haven't been to Alberta. BC and Ontario. That's it. Maybe some day I'll get up there. Although... I think my high-adventure travel days are probably behind me. I don't have the strength I used to have when I was younger. *sigh* Ah, well. I hope you have a pleasant rest of the spring, and a delightful summer. I'll look forward to whatever you're watching next.
The 90s X-Men cartoon series ( which is incredible by the way) was dubbed by all Canadian actors! You should totally check it out or at least the sequel series X-Men 97! It's ridiculously good!!!! Also, I'm really enjoying your reactions! Just discovered you. If you love learning about behind the scenes type of stuff and want to learn more about the X-Men, there is an excellent documentary on Chris Claremont and his monumental 16 year run on the series on UA-cam. I highly recommend checking it out as he is the most important writer on X-Men. Most X-Men adaptations pull from his work or were inspired by his work.
14:58 since you watched the Deadpool movies that’s colossus the big metal guy and also Nightcrawler in the comics is Mystique’s son but not it the movies or at least it was never confirmed
I bought a Famke Janssen autograph Funko Pop of Jean Grey from Dark Parlor. A few years ago I met Aaron Stanford who plays Pyro and got his autograph. Very cool person to meet. 2 years ago I met Sawn Ashmore who plays Iceman. Shawn was really cool to talk with. He asked me if I met his brother Aaron Ashmore. I said I met him yesterday. Aaron assistant asked me my name and I said Aaron. He says like his name and points to Aaron. I said yes. He writes my name down. Then I walk up to Aaron. He looks at the post it note. He was shocked. He said Aaron cool name. He even wrote on the picture Aaron cool name lol I told Shawn I got into his acting from the Disney show In a beat of a heart. I told him he was my favorite actor in the show and told him he is going to be a big actor someday. I also said when I heard you got the role of Iceman I said he is the perfect choice for that role. Both brothers were amazing to meet and talk to. Also the mutant Nightcrawler mother is Mystique
I hope you add Xmen 97 onto your radar. I don’t think you need to watch the older 5 seasons (although I’m watching those with my daughter), maybe for continuity, not reaction the last episode of season 5. It’s a great show, like this is a great movie & again another great reaction, thank you
I loved these movies, my only complaint, and its not a big deal but when they introduced new characters that were X-Men in the books, they didn't stick around.
Alberta as the setting is not surprising to me as Logan is Canadian. 😉 I loved Nightcrawler in the comics, and Alan Cumming’s portrayal is one of my favorites in the franchise. The only nitpick I have after the first movie is that Logan is “vertically challenged” - Bryan Singer went to great lengths to stay true to that initially, given how tall Hugh Jackman is. And for the rest of the franchise, that’s completely ignored. Sigh. ❤❤❤
I LOVE UR REACTION TO THIS AWESOME X-MEN MOVIE 🎥🍿 THIS IS A CLASSIC MOVIE ACTION MOVIE BEAUTIFUL LADY I LOVE THE CHARACTER NIGHTCRAWLER HES ONE OF MY FAVORITE XMEN LOVE 😘
KL when youve finished all of the live action X-Men would you be able to checkout X-Men 97? Me and my son just finished the movies and the animated show directly after. It was the best experience. I really hope you get to experience that too.
Girl. I just love you. You just remind me of the hot cheeto girl that was my bully protection in high school. You just radiate comfort and you're the best for that.
"That'll do it, right?" 😬 About that... Lady Deathstrike is probably still alive, just with all her internals trapped in adamantium forever... it's probably the worst fate of any character in these movies.
The scene with Bobby Drake’s family feeling like a coming out of the closet is definitely intentional. His folks are worse in the comics, and he’s been canonically gay since the 90s.
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out, and I was super excited for the next film when I saw The Phoenix in the water, but I was extremely disappointed when ‘The Last Stand’ came out, because they totally ruined The Phoenix/The Dark Phoenix story, which is my absolute favorite storyline in comics.
The convo was definitely a double untondra with bobby and his parents symbolizing someone revealing being gay , ice man in some interations of the comics is LGBTQ
The third film falls off a bit in terms of the quality, but it still manages to be a serviceable end to the first trilogy of X-Men movies. I personally much prefer the later trilogy of First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse.
I agree. Didn't really like the overall direction, but the introduction of two more of the original X-Men characters from the comics and the expansion of some familiar ones made it worth watching for me. Bryan Singer didn't direct it either, so there is that.
The first two movies are okay, but they definitely drop in quality rather quickly with the next film, on through the rest of them, and the Wolverine movies are garbage too, until you get to Logan’. They absolutely ruined so many amazing comic book stories, and it’s quite sad and disappointing. The two X-Men animated shows are great, and definitely show that the storylines can be done properly, with a little bit of effort. ‘The Last Stand’ is one of only three movies that I have ever walked out of the theater before it was finished, and demanded my money back.
Super excited to continue and thanks so much for watching! ❤

@kaiiellle You're welcome. You are a great UA-cam movie reviewer.
Fun fact the mystique costume in both the original and the new x men movies are no clothes just blue latex for the texture and blue body spray and nothing else
I said in 2003 and I’ll say it again… that opening with Nightcrawler at the White House is one of the best opening scenes of all time
Agreed. Its still pitch perfect action scene: Amazing choreograph, camera works, editing and music.
It’s really amazing how well it holds up.
Amen.
100% yes.
Oh ok so you’re every person online. Cool

The scene where Wolverine stabs one of Stryker’s goons through the refrigerator is still his best onscreen berserker rage. So intense and badass.

Wolverine vs Lady Deathstrike was awesome 😊
I really wish the fight had gone on long enough for the serum to have worn off - it's not like one would die first. Most depressing mutant death ever.
@@gethriel The really sad part is she's not dead, just filled with adamantium.
And I’m going to start saying this now.
When you get to Days of Future Past please watch the Rogue cut.

It’s a proper hero moment. I know what to do, and I’m the only one who can do it.
Iceman chillin the soda is just a classic meme. so fun.

As expected from this director, but necessary nonetheless

While my favorite of the first 3 X-Men movies, some of the characters get short changed because Wolverine is the star . They also changed some of the characters like making Iceman/Bobby younger so he and Rogue could be a couple. Some of the important X-men only get cameos .
29:17 aaaaaw I love family-reunions ❤😊
Have you seen True Blood? Anna Paquin was also great in that show. Another show mostly worth checking out. Especially the first half of the show. The 2nd half goes a little off the rails for many people but I mostly enjoyed it personally.
23:02 That’s exactly what that was
In the books night crawler is the son of mystique and sabretooth, and rouge is his adopted sister.
In the comics, Nightcrawler is Mystique's son
Thanks so much! I def want to get into X-Men '97 once these films are done. I'll probably check out the initial 90s one too!
@@kaiielle I'm so excited for your journey! The X-Men have always been very important to me!
This is My Favorite One, Great Reaction Sweetheart ❤
Hi Kaiielle Your reaction to X men 2 was amazing , see you at the last time movie
Also the mutant Nightcrawler mother is Mystique
dig the reaction!
I hope you add Xmen 97 onto your radar. I don’t think you need to watch the older 5 seasons (although I’m watching those with my daughter), maybe for continuity, not reaction the last episode of season 5. It’s a great show, like this is a great movie & again another great reaction, thank you
Def going to get into that once I'm done all the films!
15:01 oh your poor wife
I will be yes!
Wolverine is Canadian.
Girl. I just love you. You just remind me of the hot cheeto girl that was my bully protection in high school. You just radiate comfort and you're the best for that.
In love 🥰
"That'll do it, right?"
😬
About that...
Looks like Stryker still hasn’t gotten over Macho Grande :-/
What if Scott kissed Charles at the end before the jet took off🤣
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out, and I was super excited for the next film when I saw The Phoenix in the water, but I was extremely disappointed when ‘The Last Stand’ came out, because they totally ruined The Phoenix/The Dark Phoenix story, which is my absolute favorite storyline in comics.
I like that they chose to include Kurt's Catholicism. A lot of movies would gloss over that...
Easily the best in the original trilogy just like spiderman 2
Are you planning on watching X-Men 97 at some point?
Yep! Not til the movies are done tho.
@@kaiielle Great to hear, it is honestly one of the best X-Men adaptation to date! Love from a fellow Albertan!
The convo was definitely a double untondra with bobby and his parents symbolizing someone revealing being gay , ice man in some interations of the comics is LGBTQ
Really weird to see this version of colossus compared to the one from deadpool.
A bit outta left field, but, your hair looks great.
Hello
That 50's hairstyle is just not doing it, my dear.
Ah well it's a good thing that I don't style my hair solely for your approval!
I saw you needed a hug after that Jean moment. 🫂
