  • #hungrybin. It's time to harvest the Hungry bin again. I can see this bin is ready to harvest out and separate the worms. Little did I know how much pure rich castings were in the bottom tray.
Sifting through the first half was easy but further down I went it was puttier and more clay like which
is the absolute best sign you have pure castings .
I had fun doing this even though it was not a very nice day outside but I managed to get it all
done without being in the elements too much.

I’ve never seen a full harvest of a Hungry Bin before, Cher. That’s quite a bonanza of castings! I would say I average 3-4 months between harvests of my various bins. I harvest my sandbox bin twice per year. I give it six months over the fall/winter before harvest and five months through the spring/summer.

That is the first biggest full batch of castings I have had in there. I agree, I average about every 4 months between harvests and even less the more worms are in there. Thanks for watching🙂

Those were some fantastic castings!! Very cool to see you reset your worm bins with fresh bedding and loads of worms form the harvest!! As for your question at the end, I harvest my outdoor bin a little each time I feed it so It is more like a continuous flow bin, my tiny worm bin is about every 5 months and my worm tower gets a tray harvested off it every 2 months! Great video, thanks for sharing it!!🪱🪱🪱

Thankyou for sharing your harvest times. . Usually I do the same and sift out some when I need a bit or feel like doing it for fun. 😀

I think I’m a bit pedantic but I pick all my worms out and put them back into the main bin. I love my worm farms . I’m in Adelaide and just wondering where you got your sifter bucket it looks like a waste paper bin 😊

It can be very time consuming hand picking every worm and the cocoons from a large bin but sift as much as I can . Yes my sifter is just a basket but the holes are a good size to sift . For $4 it was a bargain. Thanks for your comment Angela. 🦘😀Cher

Hi Cher, I have a hungry bin too. You know you’re supposed to harvest by taking off the bottom, right?

As I like to collect the worm compost too I harvest it all from the top. In my video I do show harvesting the castings from the bottom tray if you didn't watch that part. Cheers🙂🦘Cher

I skip with the cardboard and egg cartons. I just use a mix of peat moss and leaf mulch and some pureed food scrapes. The worms go through it a lot quicker!

Arent you supposed to empty it from the bottom? I thought that was the whole reason for having a continuous flow through bin?

As all my compost was ready to harvest I harvested from the top and the bottom tray was pure castings. I actually prefer the compost stage as it's easier to separate the worms.

I don't have this bin so I wanted to confirm, if you grab the casting from the bottom do you still have to separate the worms and food still? I thought this system allows you to skip these steps.

Thanks for your question. You can just harvest from the bottom and there will be only a few stragglers there. If you leave the bin for too long the castings are all the way through the bin and it makes it so much harder to separate the worms as it doesn't go through the sifter because it's too moist. I generally harvest the bin now when the compost is about 70% and I find it's much easier to sift the whole bin at once because I want the compost to top up the raised beds. It's up to each person how they wish to operate their bins. The more worms you have in there the faster the compost too. 🙂🦘Cher
