My grandpa recently gave me his old '99 Protege, looks exactly like this one, same paint job and everything. It's amazing how well it lasted him, barely spent $4000 on repairs and aside from a weaker a/c it's in top shape. Great car.
I have a Protoge that cost me $750. I have driven it on many road trips. It runs awesome! It doesn't look fancy but I have driven it from Northern Cal to Socal many times like 300 miles. It runs awesome! I got some stuff fixed on it (Spark plugs, oil changes, replaced some gasket in the middle of the engine, replaced belts, alignments, windshield replaced). That cost me like $700 but it runs like a champ. All in all I spent like $1500 but I feel like it will run for another hundred thousand miles easy maybe more. Don't be sad to let it go because someone else will get good use out of it. :) I recommend this car too! I might search for another Mazda when I get a new car.
Oh, man, I had a black '99 Protégé ES with a 5spd manual. Bought it new. After the third timing belt I finally traded it in, and when I did that I discovered that rain water was flowing through the channels on the door frame straight into my trunk. I wondered what that sloshing sound was. The timing belt issues turned out to be due to a bent timing belt tensioner. Probably a manufacture defect, but all the timing belt replacements were somehow not part of the powertrain warranty. The second timing belt break was in August 2002, right in front of the Pentagon. I never got a tow truck so fast in my life. I remember the CD player was standard but the cassette deck was a $50 option. Much like an abused spouse, I still loved that car. When it wasn't leaving me on the side of the road it was a peppy little car.
I got a 99 as well. Manual DX. 175K on it now.. Everything is original. Only basic repairs. Ware and tare and regular maintenance is all. I'm happy with it.
I have one, and it is my first car. We got it and it had a cracked head gasket and the head needed to be shaved a little. While we had it apart, we replaced the timing belt because we heard that they have troubles. 172,000 miles and it runs fine. I love this car too.
I've got an 03 Protege back in Washington state, just left to go to college back in August here in DC. Man, I miss that car. First car, first stick shift... such a great first car. I don't know if you get much snow in Alabama, but that thing did pretty well if it had snow tires. ABS brakes might be useful, but I suppose that depends on who you ask. Great cars. Mines only at 81,000, but I know I'd trust it way past 200,000 if I keep it that long.
I have a 2009 Mazda 3 5 door Sport with 185,000 miles. Most maintenance expenses are with the suspension. Had a trans module go out resently. 2.3 engine can still get 31 mpg with good 87 octane. Just got back from a 2000 mile trip in 50 hour driving by myself.. Started using full synthetic motor oil. There was no oil consumption during this trip. Car ran like a champ
had a 2003 one for about 4 years but its sold without warning today. its replaced with the new kia soul. now that makes 3 hyundai kia cars in our family. even the soul was built in the same factory as our rondo!
I found your video while searching for Mazda video.... You probably sold it by now since it is 2016.....but I wanted to say that I own a 1999 Protege ( Manual Trans) with 283000 miles on it...regular maintenance, not really any big issues except a Fuel Pump in AUgust 2015
I've had a similar experience with my pickup truck. Even though i bought it at 337,000 miles. It now has 346,000. Done basic things, brakes, coolant change, ujoints, voltage regulator, shocks.
I bought a 99 mazda protege LX 5 years ago(2014 ) with 31,000 miles and now it has 65,000 miles and I have only had to do minimal things: Tires, 2 new front struts, 2 new rear sway bar links, new MAF sensor, spark plugs+ wires.. rubber mounts are starting to get crusty and the body is starting to get rusty ( Minnesota winters) gonna run it til something catatrophic happens to it.
Got a '99 protege ES for my 1st car a little over a year ago and it's been a solid car for me! All I needed were some break pads and some shocks in the back (If too many people are in the car the ass end will smack the ground if I go over bumps) but this car is very solid and get pretty gas mileage. I will say that this car is a bit too slow for the mpg you get out of it.
Just bought my first car which is Mazda protege for 1100 which isn't bad at all everything works expect sunroof but I can't wait to start driving this beast
Bought my 1995 protegay with 144k miles on it and ran it up to 261k then head gasket blew...probably would have lasted longer but I was a dumbass and ran it hot. Watch your temp guage in these older cars folks!
speaking of which, a friend of a friend has one of those Monte SS, and IT'S been nothing but trouble, Head gaskets, radiator, fuel pump, you name it..so I guess there's a bad apple no matter which bunch you pick.
I was considering one of these to have as a daily driver. I like my old cars, but sometimes its nice to own something newer to drive daily. I wanted an ES model with the fancier options. This will definitely be a good car for someone, Id like to think if you give a car your approval it can't be that bad. Not that your picky, but you just don't put up with stupid manufacturing issues or crap cars in general. We have all seen how quickly some of the cars go away because they are just turds.
these things honestly have the most solid headgaskets. more harder wearing and robust than toyota or honda. personally i prefer these over honda or toyota but in new zealand these things are EVERYWHERE, more than toyota, nissan, honda, anything european
well thanks, but you seem to be the exception. Several people take time out of their lives to tell me I talk too much in my videos. I'm not going to change, of course.
So for a little over $500 you had a fine car for 40,000 miles! Some people pay 40,000 just for a car to keep it to 40,000 miles. That will be a fine car for someone. I bet it will go another 100k too.
Tyler I just bought a 2001 es 5spd for 500 bucks at auction. 2 owner new car trade in. Clean as a whistle. So is the timing belt non interference? I have no idea if this one has been changed I assumed it was a chain
It is a belt. Non-interference. Change it for peace of mind or run it until it breaks. Remember that it's a 2.0L FS-DE engine, not the smaller Z engine.Enjoy the car!
i have the base model version of this car. white with black bumpers and 13" steel rims. has no central locking electric mirrors or anything only power steering and AC thats it. its a 1.3 liter manual and i have NEVER done anything to it in 3 years except drive it and it never breaks down. I have never serviced or cleaned it and it is the most reliable car ever. i swear by these cars. car has 275,000 kilometres. best cars ever.
i have a 1999 with 128K manual locks and windows exactly like this one the interior is like brand new my friend gave it to me but it a little bit messed up from the front fender and bumper its a great car its so quite and its a 5 speed maunal any advice ? also since im fixing the front end i might go with the mazdaspeed bumper
so far on my mazda the power steering is going the trany is sliping the motor has lost alot of power the belts have fell of so many times ive lost count leaving me stranded god knows how many times the list goes on
those mazdas are either great cars or crap.. either they run forever or fall apart.. there seems to be no inbetween.. some miatas and such have hit 500k miles, but my cousins protege needs about 1000 a year to keep it running and it only has 120k miles and its an 04-05
My '99 Protege has 221,000 on it, and very few issues. I replaced the catalytic converter to pass inspection last summer, and it should probably get another timing belt. I was going to replace the plugs and wires, but my standard plug socket doesn't fit down inside the port in the valve cover. Do the Mazda plugs use a smaller socket? I didn't think to try any of the smaller sizes.
I don't remember, but I have a video posted where I tuned this car up and I might have mentioned it in that video. I was dumb to sell this car, and even dumber to replace it with a Buick:-(
WhoSaidTyler I was thinking about that when you said about replacing it. I know someone with a 2000 protege, with 165K miles and no problems (original owners, and the interior looks brand new, amazing). Regular maintenance like timing belts and tuneups, otherwise a CHAMP. I seriously think that these cars along with the early 1987-1989 Honda Accords are some of the best cars ever made.
the same car but dont have power anything and its brown and im so glad im getting rid of it it was such a pos but now i got a good car a 2003 monte carlo ss soooo much better then my old mazda
Hello, question friend of a friend selling his car 1999 Mazda protege lx base model 1.8 liter doc 16 valve, body not perfect but it has 200000 miles on it still driveable and his asking price is 900.00 dollars, should I but it ?
Yep...my brother still has his '99 DX, and the original radio crapped out the same way. He got another from the junkyard, same thing. It plays when IT wants to, not the driver...lol.
