I have watched and learned from many of Scotty's video but this one...PUMP THE BRAKES!! He starts off by saying NEVER clean the engine then ends with why it's best to keep a clean engine. I have been working on cars for YEARS and nothing is better than working on a clean engine. I always promote washing engines because like Scotty says as well as many others here, a clean engine helps with finding leaks especially small oil, and transmission leaks. Also oil and dirt build up creates a layer that causes the engine to not cool. Yes the radiator coolant keeps the car from over heating but also air passing over the outside of the engine and tranny does as well. I have been washing engines for years and NEVER had an issue. I use the engine degreaser then high pressure spray it off, even spraying the SEALED electrical parts. I do not wait until the engine has cooled because a warm engine also help evaporate the rinse water as I drive the car off from the car wash. Every mechanic that I have encountered has said they would rather work on a clean engine rather than a dirty oily engine because a lot of time the dirt contaminates the new parts and the oils makes the nuts and bolts slip on the tools! SO CLEAN THOSE ENGINES. They run cooler and are easier to maintenance.
I agree with everything you said except for "I do not wait until the engine has cooled." You make it seem like the engine is operating temp by saying you were at a car wash. Never rinse a hot or even operating temp engine you will destroy the metal by thermal shock.
James Burgett II a clean engine always has a better smell if it gets parked in a garage. Hot grease and dirt has an unpleasant odor in a closed garage. Hot metal and plastic is much less offensive to the nose

@@lurk7967 Still, the title doesn't specify that, and it wasn't very clear that's what he meant. Don't get me wrong, Scotty is awesome, he's just a little goofy.
The way I was thought by a professional car detailer is this: Disconnect the negative off the battery. Brush all that you can before you apply water or degreaser. Brush all the dust and grime that you can get, then blow it off with an air compressor. Next is to apply the degreaser of choice and scrub all you can using a variety of brushes from small to big, plastic and copper wire. Then carefully rinse it off avoiding all the electronics like alternator and fuse box. Next is to blow all the water off with an air compressor and let everything dry completely.

Yessir, you are correct!! Among things like rubber doesn't respond well to grit and grime, so things like hoses and belts kept clean last longer. He says "electronics" like its some kind of magic. These components are designed to operate in the harsh conditions of an underhood environment. They are not waterproof to the point of submersion but highly water resistant none the less.
I was a detailer for nearly three years and cleaned engine bays on all types of cars. I even detailed hybrid engine bays and had no problems. The only car that acted up after cleaning it was a 1993 Honda Accord. So out of hundreds of cars I only had a problem with one.
Most of your electronics will be fine if u clean ur engine bay as water or mud gets on them all the time when it storms and so on so cleaning ur engine bay with water shouldnt hurt anything as most modern vehicles electronics are sealed in waterproof materials just dont go spraying ur fuses and relays but everything else should be good as long as u dont purposly spray the crap out of them
I work at a dealership and every sold car that comes through we always wash the engine and it never has caused a problem, we always make sure the engine is running and never spray near the air filter

I also like a clean engine, too! So much more pleasant to work on, even if I'm just doing an oil change. That being said, I would never clean the engine bay myself. Too risky, since I don't know what to cover up. I leave that to my detailer. He knows how to clean the engine bay without harming the electronics.
Boy I wish I had seen this video before. I drive a 2009 Honda Accord with 222,000 mi on it, it ran great no leaks. After cleaning my engine at my next oil change they pointed out three oil leaks and two CV joint leaks. Currently dealing with these problems now at a total cost of about $1,300. All I can figure is my gaskets and seals were old and brittle and broke down from the degreaser or that the dirt and grime were what was holding it all together, lol. We live and we learn.
I had an employee who took it upon himself to wash the underside of our crane with a pressure washer. Everytime it rained the crane started itself and would be running when we came in in the morning.

I pressure washed my trucks engine and used protector spray and covered everything rubber. It's nice and new lookijg while keeping all the rubber protected.
I am cleaning engines in all my cars for 25 years already. Engine working great, looking good without any problem. I wash my engine in self service car wash. To do this safe, cover computer and battery with plastic bag and keep water nozzle far enough from engine parts ( high pressure can destroy sensor connectors). ✅
Tardeli costantini I just use a bucket of water with dawn, some rags, and I wipe it down a few times a year. I also use aerospace 303 on a rag and wipe down and condition my plastics, and hoses.
Scotty Always sound advice from you. I have bought 3 vehicles in the past 3 years, a Tundra, a RAV4 and a Civic. Your advice to mostly buy a Toyota or a Honda definitely influenced my decisions. Keep up the great videos! Scott Reed
I work in a professional detail shop and we’ve never washed engine bays until recently. Kind of Ironic that the 1st engine we washed ended up breaking down on a test drive for water in the cylinders.... haven’t done it since.
Haha haha, what did you use a fire hose, common sense is not required anymore that's why the problem. Don't stick the hose in the exhaust pipe next time.
And some poeple suggests just because they did it for 20 whatever years it truly doesn't mean nothing happens. It does at least the integrity of the car is impacted some how and the car probably too old doesn't have the modern sensors today's car do. So that's why it is affected is just no sensors to tell it.

Keeping the engine clean actually helps the engine stay cool... oil build up on top of dirt and grim creates a barrier of insulation
Wait. Shouldn't insulating the engine make it more efficient? Cooling is the job of the radiator system. A cold engine is an inefficient engine.
@@swesleyc7 but you don't want the engine overheating do you?
@@swesleyc7 cooled not cold
I ran a dozer that leaked oil like crazy and the engine was caked in dirt that got stuck in all the oil it leaked and it ran at a cool 190 degrees all day because the radiator was doing it’s job 👍
Also dirt and grime eventually bad for the hoses.

Don't get me wrong, Scotty is awesome, he's just a little goofy.
The way I was thought by a professional car detailer is this:
Disconnect the negative off the battery.
No detailer I've ever known does this, which includes Larry himself (Ammo NYC)
I've been watching Scotty Kilmer videos for several years. Scotty's information has complete changed my mind when it comes to Toyota's and Lexus. Thanks for all the information

UA-cam Finest, if you put plastic bags over the electronics you’ll be fine
Most of your electronics will be fine if u clean ur engine bay as water or mud gets on them all the time when it storms and so on so cleaning ur engine bay with water shouldnt hurt anything as most modern vehicles electronics are sealed in waterproof materials just dont go spraying ur fuses and relays but everything else should be good as long as u dont purposly spray the crap out of them
2 main things to watch for is wires and the engine. You dont want water in the engine or wires.
