I like having a clean engine bay. Makes it easy to spot a leak or problem and I enjoy looking at it.
W1DO just look at it
I agree. I really like Scotty. I watch all his videos. I'd say I agree with him 80% of the time. But I don't always buy what he's saying.... much as synthetic oil isn't better than conventional. And the only cars worth buying are Toyota's. Haha.
Plus a dirty engine bay has a lower cooling efficiency
Exactly same reason for me.
spot on also i’ve hung out in shops a lot and they treat cars with clean engine bays way more cautiously and more finesse then dirty engine bay cars,i’ve even seen them put protector films on the fenders on clean cars and none for dirty cars they just lean over on them and place tools all over where they can put them

Regularly wipe down your engine with a damp cloth. No chance of water damage and no shame from a dirty engine.
Good advice. Exactly what I do.
I wipe down my engine with a live damp badger.
Same here ,if you do it regularly and don't let the dirt build up,it's easy to clean it.
Damp but not with water, use engine degreaser some water and armor all
Or piss on it
There is a big difference between a car enthusiast and a mechanic: cleanliness.
Most mechanics snap on parts and never clean the surrounding areas, and a car enthusiast will spot clean with a toothbrush everything.
The car is the reflection of who you are.
There's also a big difference in knowledge of cars between mechanic and enthusiasts. Also big difference between a Car detailer and a mechanic. Enthusiasts know about looks, the features, they put a premium on aesthetics, ride and technology, needless to say a mechanics knowledge is more comprehensive and definitive, they know each brands weakness and strengths, the engineering pros and cons, because they're the ones who actually deal with the issues. This is why I don't listen to UA-cam "car enthusiasts" featuring cars for buyers, I ask seasoned mechanics. Most "enthusiasts" don't even know how a combustion engines works, they do cosmetic work but can't do maintenance work. Also, cannot fault mechanics for not having the time to clean their engine bay and its so time consuming as it is detail work, my uncle was a mechanic and sometimes they're so dead tired they would fall asleep with some grease still on them. If you don't know how a garage runs, you wouldn't know why mechanics are the way they are. They put cosmetics behind practicality and function.
Whaat😂reflection of who u are

I like to keep my engine clean but yeah, I do cover the electrics with plastic bags. 💯👍👍👍
@paperchasin23 lol
I have watched and learned from many of Scotty's video but this one...PUMP THE BRAKES!! He starts off by saying NEVER clean the engine then ends with why it's best to keep a clean engine. I have been working on cars for YEARS and nothing is better than working on a clean engine. I always promote washing engines because like Scotty says as well as many others here, a clean engine helps with finding leaks especially small oil, and transmission leaks. Also oil and dirt build up creates a layer that causes the engine to not cool. Yes the radiator coolant keeps the car from over heating but also air passing over the outside of the engine and tranny does as well. I have been washing engines for years and NEVER had an issue. I use the engine degreaser then high pressure spray it off, even spraying the SEALED electrical parts. I do not wait until the engine has cooled because a warm engine also help evaporate the rinse water as I drive the car off from the car wash. Every mechanic that I have encountered has said they would rather work on a clean engine rather than a dirty oily engine because a lot of time the dirt contaminates the new parts and the oils makes the nuts and bolts slip on the tools! SO CLEAN THOSE ENGINES. They run cooler and are easier to maintenance.
It just seems wrong to be spraying water on things that can rust, be infiltrated by water, or have electricity running through them. Isn't it risky?
I wash my engine bay all the time, never had a mechanical or leak problem.
Same here wash my car’s engine yearly no problem.
I agree with everything you said except for "I do not wait until the engine has cooled." You make it seem like the engine is operating temp by saying you were at a car wash. Never rinse a hot or even operating temp engine you will destroy the metal by thermal shock.
AMEN Brother 😃👍😆
Although not required I have always preferred the look of a nice clean engine.
Plus if you keep it clean the engine will run allot cooler from all Al grease
James Burgett II i agree
James Burgett II a clean engine always has a better smell if it gets parked in a garage. Hot grease and dirt has an unpleasant odor in a closed garage. Hot metal and plastic is much less offensive to the nose
I like a clean engine bay as well
I'd rather listen to an experienced mechanic and do what he says. Not to wash my engine it is.
It should be “never carelessly clean your engine”
I mean, if you power wash the alternator, you're gonna run into problems lmao
Exactly. There’s no problem with cleaning your engine/engine compartment. As long as you take precautions and do it right. I’ve always cleaned my engines. Never had any problems.
@@val13c59 agreed, there's a reason we see this guy working in his driveway not in a nice shop, he's a backyard mechanic, and we shouldn't trust his opinions.

Hey Scotty. A clean engine always looks great. I find it also helps pin point any leaks when they come up.
Nope. Wash your engine bay. Use light pressure. Don't spray it in your air intake.

Keeping the engine clean actually helps the engine stay cool... oil build up on top of dirt and grim creates a barrier of insulation
Wait. Shouldn't insulating the engine make it more efficient? Cooling is the job of the radiator system. A cold engine is an inefficient engine.
@@swesleyc7 but you don't want the engine overheating do you?
@@swesleyc7 cooled not cold

Yessir, you are correct!! Among things like rubber doesn't respond well to grit and grime, so things like hoses and belts kept clean last longer. He says "electronics" like its some kind of magic. These components are designed to operate in the harsh conditions of an underhood environment. They are not waterproof to the point of submersion but highly water resistant none the less.

@@StanTheObserver-lo8rx computers have always existed.
@@TraumaER I dont think what was inside of a 71 Nova could be called a computer. In those days a computer was the size of a car.
The way I was thought by a professional car detailer is this:
Disconnect the negative off the battery.
Brush all that you can before you apply water or degreaser. Brush all the dust and grime that you can get, then blow it off with an air compressor.
Next is to apply the degreaser of choice and scrub all you can using a variety of brushes from small to big, plastic and copper wire.
Then carefully rinse it off avoiding all the electronics like alternator and fuse box.
Next is to blow all the water off with an air compressor and let everything dry completely.
No detailer I've ever known does this, which includes Larry himself (Ammo NYC)
I was a detailer for nearly three years and cleaned engine bays on all types of cars. I even detailed hybrid engine bays and had no problems. The only car that acted up after cleaning it was a 1993 Honda Accord. So out of hundreds of cars I only had a problem with one.

@@michaellowe3665 they weren't. They were regular civics with someone who probably never changed the oil driving them... I've had 3 dodges in a row and had no issues.
@@michaellowe3665 "Hey let me install a trashcan muffler on my 4 banger so it can sound like a moped on steroids and make me think I'm going faster". They are one of the dumbest installs on a rice burner. Plus, they dont even realize it doesn't make it go faster cuz the engine wasn't meant for it. They would need to update the computer accordingly. "How do you know they didn't update the computer"? Take a look at a car with a trashcan muffler, the cars are beaten up, with body filler all over, and have body kits that dont fit and/or are not meant for the car they are driving. So why would they spend the money to update their car's computer? All in the name of wanting to be like Fast n the Furious lol.
My dad has a 2000 dodge chrysler caravan. Still his everyday-to-work vehicle since he bought it 20 years ago. Ill admit the damn thing is hideous but its been his most durable vehicle in his life
Good thing because i'm having a picnic today
But how is this relevant to engine bay
My personal how to clean the engine bay:
1. remove the battery
2. use a wet towel to clean the surface
3. use a brush to clean and dissolve dirt from narrow surfaces
4. apply a lot of brake cleaner and flush the dirt down
I have trouble keeping the out side of my car clean let alone the engine bay
I wonder who dosen't love their sporty car engine bay clean ?
me and i dont fucking care
That picture with Mr. Clean looking dirty was just so funny🤣
Boy I wish I had seen this video before. I drive a 2009 Honda Accord with 222,000 mi on it, it ran great no leaks. After cleaning my engine at my next oil change they pointed out three oil leaks and two CV joint leaks. Currently dealing with these problems now at a total cost of about $1,300. All I can figure is my gaskets and seals were old and brittle and broke down from the degreaser or that the dirt and grime were what was holding it all together, lol. We live and we learn.
2:01 As a matter of fact i do have pic nics on my cars engine!🥙🥪🥨🚘
Been following for a 2 years now. Scotty your the GOAT! I've kept my 97 Tercel in tip top shape thanks to your advice!
I have a 97 Tercel too. 😎

@@AkshayBhavsar1989 the "Turdcel" Gang is Active🤣😂🤣💯
I pressure washed my trucks engine and used protector spray and covered everything rubber. It's nice and new lookijg while keeping all the rubber protected.
Scotty
Always sound advice from you.
I have bought 3 vehicles in the past 3 years, a Tundra, a RAV4 and a Civic. Your advice to mostly buy a Toyota or a Honda definitely influenced my decisions.
Keep up the great videos!
Scott Reed
Scotty my man I love you, but we need to do something about that garage, it needs a good clean up.
I love Scotty's garage, I want to go explore it.
Only if he talks to professional scientists that shows a proper well organized car hold. Then he will take action and make a video.
I am from india , i don't know which country you belong , but ur really create a jolly guy mood , i like the way you speak and act . One like
Lol i thought americans would stick out easily to other people in other countries 😂
This is why I always clean by hand with a soft cloth, car washes are lame. 💪🙌
Do not totally agree with you on that topic but your reasoning is correct. Mainly, fans of clean engine bays do it because they like doing that, like the aspect of a clean bay (and they do what they want, no restriction on that of course), not because of functional reasons. A clean radiator is more important.
6:08 Scotty's biggest fan! ;-)
Yea, literally.
This guy! Lol
It’s like saying I don’t wipe after pooping because I will shower at some point.

Damn, lmao 😂🤣😂
Lmao facts
"Unless your having a picnic there no need to clean it"!!!! 😂😂😂😂 scotty's the best
*Scotty went from "cleaning your engine is a bad idea" to degreasing scrubbing and watering down with the garden hose...all in the same video.*
Hahahaha typical Scotty 💀🔥
I had an employee who took it upon himself to wash the underside of our crane with a pressure washer. Everytime it rained the crane started itself and would be running when we came in in the morning.
Lol!
Omg
Wtf
I dont do it on newer vehicles to much eletronics
But my old 350 would be just fine
Its perfectly fine to do on new cars every new car has dielectric grease in the connectors just cover anything that is very important and you will be fine. Most of the stuff is covered anyway by plastic!
@@tonychambers9228 I've detailed hundreds of cars in my years with de greaser and a pressure washer and ive never had a issue on cars especially less than 20 years old. So ya. Its pretty much fine. Just dont do it unless its really dirty.
I had a 2000 jeep 4.0
That i degreesed and washed and right after that my tps sensor went bad
So thats why im not a big fan of doing it
I clean my engine right after winter to remove all the salt. 😀
gotta do it in the rust belt.
@@paulparoma Right. Try doing that here in Michigan, the salt eats your car no matter what you drive.
@@rafyg3314 I live in Minnesota and have a 2005 Chevy Silverado with 289k miles not a lick of rust because I wash my car every other day in the winter time and hand dry it.
@@rafyg3314 Still shouldn't be cleaning the engine. The body and Undercarriage sure....but not the engine. Give it a wipe down if one must but spaying it with with water and cleaners will do more harm than good.
@@Anth230 A wipe down. Lol Ok sure
It’s been a blast looking at all the comments!! I bet Scotty has know idea what is in his garage just 5 feet in!
“Never clean your engine bay” 🤦🏾♂️😒
“Never clean your garage, why? You fit more stuff in it when it’s junky”
never clean your garage, so that you can go buy a new tool...that you've got three of...somewhere!!
Mr. Kilmer lost the crowd with this one, but we all still watched it, so I guess he wins!!! Lol
All my motors are clean. 40+ years , no problems. You have to do a few simple things to protect things.
Except no, you do NOT have to do a few simple things to protect things when it comes to engine cleaning. However as Scotty mentioned, that does not mean you shouldn't clean up leaks, instead it means fix the leak.
@@MrMatthewb9876 Right, but can you check the fluids without geting dirty?
@@MrMatthewb9876 if you have never cleaned under the hood for 300k miles, you get dirty just opening the hood. I can open the hood check my fluids, transmission, oil, power stearing, brake fluid with out getting my hands dirty. I have scene cars so dirty you cant see in the overflow jug for the line. Or the brake fluid line.
No thee musnt
Matthew B. Yes you do. If im wearing a white shirt, id never pop the hood unless ive recently cleaned it. Try again.
I have used water hoses/carwash pressure washers to clean my cars engine bays for years and have never had a single issue, granted I take most of my cars to car shows and events but all I do is not directly spray the electronics and intake, if I have to get close to electronic I always disconnect the negative battery terminal or if close to the intake (cold air or pod filter) I cover it with a plastic bag. Then wait for it to dry decently and remove any pooled water with microfiber cloths. Never failed me or caused me a single issue and a clean engine is MUCH more pleasant to work on than a dirty, greasy one.
I usually only deep clean after trip to the sandy beach or salted winter roads in the mountains.
Scotty did you give up on cleaning your garage?
I've never had an issue after cleaning several different engine bays, but thanks for reminding me I need to do that because it's been a while!
Scotty is right about a lot of things but this one has got me scratching my head. Cleaning any part of a car is always good for it’s longevity. The devil is in the details and maybe more of the toothbrush than the power hose is better recommend for the more sensitive areas .
I've been cleaning engines all my life and I've never had a problem as long as you avoid intakes, and electrical parts , you should be fine. Like he said when it rains the engine gets wet anyways.
Scott ain't right about everything. Screw him, I'm cleaning my car.
