If you look at most people that complain about canons focusing systems having issues, they’re tamron and sigma. I don’t think they want the bad press with something they can’t control.
@@SamA-kl6pi I use a lot of EF Tamron glass adapted, and have had little to no issues with focusing. It's unfortunately in Canon's best interest to keep the mount locked down until they release more mid-range options like this one.
@@SamA-kl6pi Maybe this is more widespread than I realize, but I've heard generally the opposite on RF. That anything adapted has worked as well or better. I've felt that way with EF 50 1.4, EF 100 macro, and the Sigma 28mm Art... but that is pretty limited firsthand experience.
@@DanYosua I'll be an example of the opposite then. My G1 version of Tamron 24-70 f2.8 went from one of my most used lenses to one I don't rely on at all when I switched to Canon mirrorless. It's just never sharp anymore, even after firmware updates. Just always a bit off with the focus. I'm selling it, deciding between the 24-70 2.8 and 28-70 2.8. I hate to spend on the 24-70 2.8 version because I'd rather spend my big money on good primes (I love my RF 50 1.2L). But my hesitation with the 28-70 2.8 is that weird feature of having to extend the barrel before shooting. I feel like that would bug me a fair bit.
Hmm, if that's the one from 2012? still disappointing, but maybe that's just not quite modern enough to be best supported? I see why you love the 50mm f1.2 while I'm renting it, and I think the extend-to-start would annoy the hell outta me too. If I ever wanted to buy this 28-70, I would want to try that type beforehand.
@DanYosua actually just sold the 24-70 and it was my go-to lens since it came out. The 28-70 has weather sealing and I heard it has L quality glass . The 28-70's size and price was the deal breaker for me. Used it on a R8 and was awesome too
The twist to start isn’t a problem, it’s way better then using a latch to twist then start like on their EF-M lenses. I briefly used the RF-S 10-18 and the twist wasn’t an issue for me. However the 28 wide point on this lens should have been 24 imo and then allow Sigma Tamron make ff lenses
I've got the 24-50 - got it with my RP. Its not a HUGE drama, for me, at least, to have that twist-start. I'd much rather have a... normal, lens, but its not a deal-breaker. Cost is more important to me than a twist start. QUESTION: I'm contemplating selling my RP and going for an R6 or R6ii, would you do that? Thanks! 🤙
Interesting... def hoping they make a tiny F4 or F2.8 version of that one. This is one of those sticker questions for anyone to truly answer but you. Things I'd be considering - hidden cost of buying memory cards in dupe (if you plan to, I did in my RP > R6 jump). Hidden cost of bigger batteries. Hard? to find R6 new if you're into that. R6iii rumors are heating up... R6ii could drop even further early next year. If you want to use your current batteries or like the current form factor, then the R8 actually blends the best of both worlds. Resale of RP will be pretty low, so will R6, and the R6ii is also gonna take a hit very soon. If you're into 4k video, want the form factor, weather sealing, ibis, etc. RP > R6 was a game changing jump for me at the exact time I was ready to put the effort in to grow into it. However, there's still a lot I could technically be shooting on the RP even today. And I loved the R8 for the year I had it. Personally, I'd wait to see what the R6iii looks like/R6ii prices fall to. And if I was doing any long-form video or hot weather shooting, I'd pass over the R6 (those are still my biggest gripes around it).
@DanYosua thank you! Your answers are always so detailed - I truly appreciate all the effort you go to. Main reasons I'd be switching is a) weather sealing (NZ weather is wild) b) faster shutter speeds, c) IBIS. I don't really care about duel card slots, but I am slightly concerned about the megapixels on the r6i
@@jessezee.official No problem! 20 vs 24 mp feels pretty similar to me. When I want more it's usually when shooting with the 100-400. I tried the R7 for a month, and that finally felt like a little more breathing room at 32. If think you can live with 20, the storage benefit is nice. Haha I'll miss that if I upgrade to more in the future.
Outside of work, I'm constantly using my prime STM lenses over my EF Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2, just because it's so much lighter and less intimidating at smaller events I'm usually going to. If I could trade the Tamron for this 1:1, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Thinking of buying either the RF 24-105 F4 or the 28-70 F2.8 STM Which do you guys think is the best? I mainly shoot automotive, travel and starting to do some portraits Thanks in advance
Great vid! I do have 1 question though. I see that you can set the dial to AF - Control - MF. Can I still program the control ring and have autofocus at the same time?
I imagine that when you switch it to "control" that you'll be in autofocus. And that you won't be able to use it as a control ring while in MF, as you'll be using it to focus. To be clear though, I haven't gotten my hands on this yet.
@DanYosua great, thanks for your reply! It seems like the most logical thing to me as well. But since it's not specified anywhere, it is nice to see what the community thinks it means. Keep up the good work ✌🏻
Just found the channel, great content. Appreciate the thoughts on the new RF 28-70 STM... the price point is not going to help recruit young people to Canon yet. My guess is the 24-105 f4 will be the more tempting option to buy first. Also wish there was a much better middle ground of lens selection like Sony. But I have to have good ergonomics and nobody is close to Canon. Nobody.
Appreciate the kind words, welcome! I agree with the recruiting haha. Out of the things I've tried personally, the R8 is one of the most compelling reasons to get into Canon. And I haven't used it, but the R6ii has remained priced competitively. Still feeling pain around certain areas of the lens lineup, and Sony's looks the most attractive from afar.
as some who had the 15-45mm on the EFM lens, the design choice isn't that bad, t works just works. f this lens is sharper than the EF sigma 24-70mm in the center it's a win, but lets be honest this lens will be terrible in the corners lol
Oh. Hi from Auckland! I'm thinking of this for international travel with family. Normally use RF 24-105mm f/4L and RF 35mm f/1.8 for domestic travel with my partner, but was looking for a single lens to pack lighter when with parents or walking all day in another country. I was very tempted to bring the RF 35mm f/1.4L as a challenge, but I may chicken out with the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 if it's available locally in time.
It's a lens that I wish had come out four years ago with the R5 and R6 launch, or at least with the R6II launch. Would've been nice to sell this during my time in camera retail. I agree that the pricing is pretty okay. I expect this lens to be bundled with a body (probably only the R6II) starting middle of next year to save people $200. It just makes sense. Bundling with the R8 would come much later if ever. I too am not the biggest fan of having to "zoom" the lens to start using it. Modern examples beyond the kit lenses that have been using this are Nikon's 24-70 F4, and 14-30 F4 S line lenses. They at least pack nicely but extra step it takes before using the camera isn't intuitive. It really confuses people both new and veteran. I'm honestly surprised that Canon made this lens. It's a first for Canon as I don't think they've ever made a lesser F2.8 zoom lens for digital bodies. I don't know how long this has been in development for but it kind of feels like Canon took a cue from Sony on this. Sony needed to lessen the impact of 3rd party lens purchases and started making the 24-50 and 16-28 F2.8 lenses. Canon needs people to buy into their system at that price range. I know someone might bring up "Nikon's" (Tamron) 28-75, but Sony and Canon's lenses appear to be first party design and produced. Since the Canon 15-30 exists, despite its smaller aperture, I don't expect a non-L ultra-wide F2.8 lens to come in 2025. Maybe 2026. Surprisingly, I also think this will be a decent portrait lens for APS-C cameras too. The cost is low enough to step someone with even an R100 up to. Though the target customer would likely be an R10 user instead. I know that the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 exists but most customers strongly prefer sticking with first party choices. Eh, I've ranted enough. Been looking over this comment for over 10 minutes now. Anyway, I think this is a cool release from Canon.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment! Agreed on the non-L ultra-wide F2.8 lens... could be awhile for something like that. Might also turn out to be an interesting range like 16-28mm.

If you’re worried about the difference between 24mm and 28mm I would try to test those out. I feel like it’s a big difference, but I also like 28mm generally. There are times when I sometimes wish I had my 24-105 with me if I only have my 28mm, but 28mm is nice for wide shots as well.
I have had several lenses with this function where you have to turn your zoom in to the lowest focal length to start shooting and I hate it too, it is so stupid 🤦🏼
