This video was made and produced in Austria.
Thanks for watching this video. You will find the sharpening stones and my knives here: www.survivallilly.at/
Would you be kind enough to share the blueprint?
Have a great day and take care.
Where did you get your work table from ??
When will your knives be back in stock I want to buy a few for my kids and i
I used to use stone as a knife. A use and throw stuff.
A couple of points to help you. I make knives and have a jig close to yours. First, use a marker on the edge to see where the high and low spots are for a 100% uniform edge. Second, get a good leather strap to strop the edge after sharpening. It will remove the micro burrs from the edge. Third, get you an assortment of chain saw files from 1/32 to 1/4 and make a second arm for the jig to hold the files to sharpen the serrated edges.
Just keep in mind that the serrated blade edge is shaped on a slighter angle than the regular blade. Only a couple of degrees difference between the two but it is a difference.
Other than those notes you are an inspiration to all outdoors people. I love watching your videos.
I would like to see a shop tour.
Yours looks compact and we'll equipped.
Use a permanent marker on the edge before using the stones. It will show you where you have removed material and where you need more work. You can wipe it off with isopropyl alcohol
Just a suggestion. Towards the blade. I've been sharpening blades for over 30 years. A honing tool is also very good after.
I get a great edge doing this but it seems like at some point I start shaving off the stones. Is that normal?
Very clever, very nice! You do fine, beautiful work Lilly! I wish I could have watched your videos with my father before he died. I think he would have liked them very much. He was very clever and inventive also. We could have done these projects together. Thank you.
Rotating caster bearings are amazing. I made a bike trailer hitch from one and it's still going strong five years later. It's impressive how much they can take.
Hi Lilly. You did a remarkable job in this video. A lot of work no doubt. Thanks for the video. Nice workshop too. It is very important to keep all our survival knives sharp and ready. Thanks a lot.
Hoch beeindruckendes Resultat liebe Lilly! SUPER gebaut! Beste Grüße, Sepp
Professional knife sharpening costs $1.00 per inch in many locations here (Texas)..but it’s fun to sharpen our own knives when needed.
Nice job I need to make one. I find knife sharpening very relaxing. This jig makes it easy for anyone to sharpen perfectly. Thank you🙂🇺🇸 stay healthy!
"Ferb i know what we're gonna do today."
😂
I would make a second holder so each stone has separate one,
Or, redesign the end piece and have the second stone on the opposite side. Hold both at the same time.
Was going to suggest the same thing
I was like "whoa" with this video. Multi-talent. I admire that
great video, lilly! something i thought of while watching you sharpening your knives is, since you have only 2 stones, maybe mount the other stone on the opposite side. that way, when you are ready to switch stones, you just have to rotate the arm around to the other stone.
The best part of cooking shows with fancy chefs......sometimes they will show them sharpening knives. swish swish swish swish done!.....skills.
Ingeniously awesome! Thanks for going through the build.
This was an awesome video. A wee break from the norm but highly entertaining. Brilliant build and exact angle on the blade every sharpening.
Hi Lilly, this self-made tool is interesting, and congratulations on your manual skills. Greetings from Italy and super LIKE.
👍👋
I like it, very ingenious. I use a Lansky for my pocket knives, which is similar to what you made. As some other people have suggested, I use a sharpie on the edge to see exactly what I am taking off and where. Also always run your stone against/towards the edge, lift up and repeat, instead of going back and forth, or at least that’s the way I have always done it. Mineral oil, or something similar helps to.
This looks great. Will cover many different tools including garden tools.
Nice! I was just looking at buying a jig! I definitely have these parts laying around the garage. Sweet.
WELL DONE LILLY! A LOT of good thought went into the planning and THEN...the making of your new jig = TALENT! I would add to your title; 'Special guest appearance; AMY!' (LOL) Health and God's blessing upon you n' yours!
I'm always amazed by your talents :-D you really have a huge amount of really useful and practical knowledge. Your workshop and tools look great!
The lady is a genius. Good job!
Awesome sharpening jig! Similar design to one that some knife makers use to shape their knives primary bevels. Well done. Also, wow your shop is super clean👍👍👍.
You are getting better and better at fabricating things! Well done Lilly!
beautiful invention to sharpen knives with the perfect angle beautiful an excellent invention good day hello👍👋
Super impressed with your never ending mountain of skills. You are a wonderful role model to any young girl that wants to do it all.
Really awesome video Lilly! You are a big inspiration!
Hello, don't be bored, sorry, you have to calculate the angle precisely for sharpening, for example, a 20 degree angle is good for a knife blade, you have to use trigonometric functions to adjust this angle to calculate the size of the side of the base, the size of the height and the size of the arm that is the sanding stone. and build the system according to those sizes
The second point is to use water when sharpening so that both the blade and the sanding stone are not damaged (of course, there are two types of sanding stones, water sanding stones and oil sanding stones).
Good luck
Lilly, you are definitely a sharp woman! ( No pun intended!) Its good to see a woman doing building something so mechanical!
Nice jig. With a little more work I imagine you could come up with a mount that holds 2 or 4 stones (so you just rotate the rod to use a different one).
Nice, a woman with craftsmanship👍👍
Ist ja cool. 😎 Also sowas habe ich noch nie gesehen. Was du immer für coole Ideen hast. 😊
Hi lily you are really good at your wood working skills and love that I will make one for myself and all so love your lovely workshop take care xx
Very nice jig and build. Love the clean and tidy workshop. May I suggest a band saw to make you more efficient. Greetings from Sydney
Australia.
В России принято нож точить " навстречу "лезвию,так металл не растягивается на кромке. Бумагу нужно резать медленно и без остановки проводя каждым миллиметром по полотну снимая макро камерой.За идею 5 из 5 ,за реализацию 3 из 5
Lilly. Your some cookie and very clever carpenter. Joiner. Wow. Never thought of restoring an old motorcycle?you have the hands for it.
Hi
Lily, you are a southern man's dream girl! I love your videos and I beat you can prep too. Keep up the great things you do! :)))
Very nice! Now I really need to get my garage cleaned up so I can make one!
Очень интересная задумка!!! Вы молодец!!!!
Good job. And maybe mounting a handle onto the detail, to which the whetstone is attached, could make the job more convenient and could protect your fingers from getting cut.
de lo mejor que he visto, realmente sos muy talentosa Lilly !!!! Saludos !!!
Well done Lilly. 👍😁
That was pretty cool!
You might try a linear bearing for the rod guide. This will work well, but mine used to squeal if the metal got rough. I had the bearing in my 3d printer stuff, and popped it in. Nice and smooth.
I always grind toward the blade, and alternate forward and backwards at an angle. The stone makes grooves, and changing the angle rips those off. Good for removing a lot of metal when you need to.
Leather or canvas, and polishing compound and strop the shit out of the blade.
I always enjoy watching your videos you are a very smart young woman. And quite handy around the house and in the shop. I like your accent also.
Well done !!!
freakin awesome! Love how you used the caster.
a couple of tips if you don't mind:
- cut on the left side of the vise, that way you can hold the cutoff piece much more easily
- don't move the sharpening stone sideways, it will wear a groove making it unusable for normal sharpening
- that handle has 4 sides, you can mount more than 1 stone on it and just rotate it to use a different stone, i also just watched a different video on this subject and the guy made a spring loaded mount for the stone. 3 screws and 30 seconds is way too much when you have 10 knives to sharpen and have to change 3-4 stones for each.
Otherwise nice job.
Wow of Lilly so handy ya ty for sharing my beautiful spirit sister love it ya ❤3✌
Hello, Lilly;
Good video, & good design.
Use a phone app, ( I have Rotating Sphere Inclinometer ) to check the angle of the blade.
Then check the angle of the stone-holder, subtract the blade angle from the holder angle.
The difference is the angle your knife is sharpened at.
Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!
Awesome video very helpful thanks
counterbore first then drill hole.
use a countersink for flat head screws, not counterbore.
for flat head screws you drill first then countersink.
you’re getting a burr when sharpening because you’re dragging the stone away from the edge. push the stone towards the edge, and you will not get any burrs.
You are amazing... Your skillset is growing each day... Cool video thx
That's Brilliant Lilly
Very good idea. I think I'll build one
Nice 👌kleiner Tipp mach dir ein 2tes Holzteil mit dem Diamant Schleifstein dann brauchst nur kurz eine Schraube lösen und fertig 😜
Brilliant!!!love it!!!
Really nice idea!
Good video and very clear. I have a suggestion: When drilling smal and larger holes at the same point: first drill the large holes, it is much more easy.
Very nice jig & very accurate. Nice work.
Brillian idea 👍
Absolutely brilliant Lilly
Great video thanks! I never realized that you are such a handy girl! And you have a well equipped workshop! Also it's the first time I noticed your beautiful hands! 👍🖐️
Very nice Lilly. Good problem solving skills.😊
Nice job 👍👏 , your shop is awesome , looks like you have everything you need ...😉😎🍀🇺🇸🍍
Nice setup! Very interesting. And you got a good workshop in your house. 👍
Hi Lilly and Amy. Happy to see you are doing great. I enjoy watching when your at your workshop. Thanks for the video. ATB
I thought that was really awesome. You have a cool workshop. Great work.
เป็นผู้หญิงที่สวยเก่งมากสุดยอด,
Stop & Go ! You drilling like a chicken.
Nice project and craft(manship)
Thanks for showing Lady
Clever design :)
Grande, magnifica passione e la tua mono d'opera è favolosa. Complimenti
Old school do it by hand. I enjoy sharpening knives, found that I enjoy it more holding knife and stone. Bought one of those sharpening systems always went back old school. Takes practice go slow stick with it.
Sehr geil. 👌
Thisbis amazing because I have been trying to makebone the past few days. Its crazy you just put this up
u made it girl, will try to do my own allready have the stones and my folding knifs completle unsharpened so, cant wait!
Lilly you ist one amazing woman - i'love your video !!!! Gongrats !!!
4:18 Lily considers using the discarded wheel as a Bearing Block
for her next project. " How to make your own Low Friction Bow Drill " .
Awesome post
As someone who utterly sucks at sharpening his swords, that might come in handy.
Unfortunately, I also suck at crafting stuff. Time to ask someone about it!
Sehr coole Idee! LG Felix
this is the kind of thing I need, nice jig !!!!!
I like the way you think. It's cool and practical. ❤ from Texas.
13:50 You seem to miss a support next to the edge. I wasn't using this support on the cheap 25€ 4 side wet stone sharpener and the edge had some flexibility - once the support was raised, you could feel the progress of sharpening. So less then 1cm overhanging improved the processes.
In the end I'm using only 1500 with a thin wet film of water smeared with a finger and for heavily used edged the 600 grid.
Your so crafty,. I loved the video.
This is a very nice design you could even do a slight alteration for a filing jig to make your own bevels godbless and thanks for sharing.
Another great project, Lilly. I have been wondering about something like this for a while, and here you are with one!
You have lovely hair ... please tie it back when using tools.
Super clever
Great idea to use a rotating wheel, but why did you glue those washers to the wooden block? - just take hardwood, drill a slightly oversized hole, chamfer and smooth it and wax the inside - doesn't make that sqeeky noise, I would go nuts on it.
If you were to attach a piece of 1/4" plywood with a series of jig- zagging holes the same size as your guide rod, you would be able to change the angle of your cutting edge, by using the next highest, or lowest hole in the 1/4" plywood. You may have to remove the top half of your castor-stand, in order to sharpen finer edges. Use a candle, rubbed around the inside of each hole, to stop chatter, and sticking. If you make the hole board tall enough to get 30%, it will work on chisels, and planer blades. Hope this helps.
Felicitari !
oui, tres bonne idée merci a bientot
man I just love this idea you came up with so simple thank you sooooo much
Nice Job Lilly . Well done
Good work lili
Cool build
